Kirschbaum Flash 1.25 Playtest

What color did you review?

Tension(s) used for playtest: 45
Power/Control: The control was very good and about what I expected from a Kirschbaum's round poly. The power was lower then I thought which added to the control. I was originally hoping for the yellow because I like softer strings. String kind of reminds me of a razor code soft but a bit more soft. I feel like kirshbaum was known for consistent round controlled strings and was a staple on college campuses till solinco came out. I prefer the feel of Kirschbaum' strings over solinco. The yellow may be a cheap alternative to YPTP yellow.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) Slightly muted, but also crisp. Wasn't super stiff or super comfortable either. Very middle ground. Still a good amount of touch
Spin: Spin was lacking for me. Was there if you brush the ball and it was lower powered so you can get spin if you have the RHS. If you're looking for a spin monster, look elsewhere
Durability: Also good. Typical notching. Feel like it would break around the 10-12 hr mark for me.
Playability Duration: I got about 7 hours out of it so far. I know it's pre-stretched but it's losing some of that playability for me so I think I'm going to play 1-2 more sessions before I cut it out. Should be close to breaking around that point but I don't feel the need to try to stretch it till it breaks.
Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why) Same. Prob 48 during summer
List any additional thoughts (optional) great bang for the buck strings. I still prefer Kirschbaum' evolution as that's one of my favorite round polys. It's been a while but I felt like it had more pop from what I can remember... Or may be color bias. Lol. I've often used pro like it as a cross and I think this would also make a great poly for a cross
@SlowTiger @konstantinos kalfountzos and @Molk among other playtesters, I definitely share a lot of your feelings on Flash. It is a nice string to play with comfortable, good feel, good performance etc. My experience has been very positive and I could play with this string without complaint any time. It is the definition of an "all-rounder". Nothing over the top but the great feel and consistency makes it easy to use. It was just what I was looking for since my game had been a dumpster fire prior, but K - Flash helped to steady the ship as I seek to find my form again.

Additionally, some hitting partners got a couple extra sets because we want to try Flash out as a hybrid. It quite nice in a full-bed, but I think it could really shine in a hybrid. I'll keep you posted.

Color: Yellow 1.25
Tension(s): 48lbs Pro Staff v13
Power/Control: The control on this string was the first thing I noticed. Amazing directional control as you would expect from a round poly. I was able to hit my spots on every shot and have confidence the string was going to be predictable. At first I thought this string was lacking power until I started to hit flared and really go for my shots then I was finding good depth.
Feel: This string was very crisp and responsive from the start. A very low launch angle but a predictable feel. The string bed was responsive, allowing me to really take full cuts at the ball knowing the outcome.
Spin:Decent spring for a round poly. The ball was never jumping off the court like it would with a shaped poly but there wasn’t a lack of spin really. My opponents were never able to tee off on a shot because of a lack of spin.
Durability: The durability has been good, about 10 hrs in and not broken yet but a fair bit of notching so expect to break in the next few hitting sessions.
Playability Duration: So far I have put about 10 hrs in on court and started to see some string movement and loss of playability. At par for poly with my game.
Tension Recommendations: I might drop a few pounds to give me a little more string movement for spin and power.
List any additional thoughts (optional): I enjoyed this string, there was nothing outstanding about it but it did everything well. I might hybrid it with shaped poly in the mains but overall a good string. Appreciate the opportunity to review it!

I find that round polys or very lightly shaped strings where you really have to feel for the shapes edges are the way to go when it comes to hybrids. The level of consistency in round poly hybrids is a lot higher then hybrids with shaped strings

What color did you review?
- Black

Tension(s) used for playtest
- 54 pounds

Power/Control
- I'm a soft poly user, so things like ECO Power and PTP are where I feel most comfortable. Compared to those strings, this was definitely more controlled. I see that many said that this string had a lot of power, but I honestly did not ever once feel that it was something insane and that I would start spraying balls. This is the definition of a string that gives out exactly what you put in. Nothing too unmanageable, and if you are used to soft polys, I don't think this was powerful at all and had more than enough control.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
- This is going to be sadly where I knock it... it was crisp and responsive, honestly hitting the ball felt great in terms of feel, but the reason I signed up for this play test is because I have TERRIBLE wrist/arm issues, and I can immediately feel differences between the other soft polys I've used and this. I felt like every single vibration was felt consistently on every swing. I tried this set up and my standard one back-to-back and night and day in terms of comfortable-ness. It is advertised as such, and I don't think I can agree with it. Obviously it's probably going to be more comfortable than like Hyper G or something along those lines, but definitely not to people like me.

Spin
- It was nothing insane, I would say it's only slightly less than PTP. I think the spin was more than adequate for what I was expecting! It is not a spin monster, but you can easily produce spin with this set up. Great for a round poly.

Durability
- obviously it took longer for this to notch than a shaped string, but even once notching came in, it was still hanging on really well. I did NOT break this string after testing it for 8-ish hitting sessions, but I did have to give up on it for my arm's sake.

Playability Duration
- Positive marks here! I could be wrong, but Kirschbaum is pre-stretched? Felt like I had the same playability for 90% of my playtest. Tension maintenance was great, probably the best tension maintenance I've felt with a "soft" poly.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why)
- I'd go looser for two reasons. I do think this does play a little more controlled than soft polys that I'm used to. I usually follow a rule where if it's sitffer, I move to 50 pounds and if it's marketed as a soft poly, I move up to 54. For this string, I'd try it at 50 pounds to have it play more similar to my other preferred strings AND hopefully get more comfort along with it...

My overall take on the string: I think this is the most standard and perfect string to be considered a "default" poly string. For someone transitioning to poly, this string does EVERYTHING you need a poly to do, and from there, you can decide what you're seeking for. It's a blank slate and will do what you expect it to do (plus it's pre-stretched and cheap, PTP is definitely not 200%+ the string that Flash is if you account for $$$ in reviews).
Definitely loved the playtest though, have always wanted to try kirschbaum!

Played 3 days in a row, strings still haven't loosened much, which is a positive for tension maintenance but not so much for me feeling like it was strung too tight.

Definitely on the firmer side but I see why the package says "powerful," it doesn't have a dead/stiff response. I don't think it's powerful in the true sense like some softer polys, more in the middle. The response has been mostly consistent as well, no random launchiness at all.

Overall though, I'm still very neutral on this string. It's not bad, I'd probably use it again but it's not overly impressed me so far. I'll put in some additional time before writing the final review.

Heading out today to begin the playtest now that the weather has cleared. Here's what we're looking at ... The review will focus on Kirschbaum Flash Black 1.25 and since I've already got Kirschbaum Super Smash Orange 1.23 in another identically matched frame ... well ... Let's Get Ready to Rumble! This should be a fun comparison! Thanks to TW and Kirschbaum for this opportunity!

Kirschbaum Flash Black 1.25 Playtest

What color did you review? Black

What Tension(s) did you use? 50 lbs. On Prince Neos 1000

Racquet used: Dunlop 300g

Power / Control – first 15 minutes took some time as I found this string to move lively than Kirschbaum Super Smash Orange in my other racquet. This Flash Black gives good power and control. I feel the ball pocketing and launch angle is very similar to Super Smash Orange. I am getting good control with this string. There is a good balance of power and control. I was hitting with a slight tail wind but everything seemed under control. Directional control was good hitting with ball machine to both corners of the court and I was also able to hit some extreme angles as well.

I felt like the control was a bit less than Super Smash Orange but I felt there was slightly more power with Flash Black; all in all a good trade off. I felt like I could get good control on slice and kick serves.

At net the directional control and feel were on par with Super Smash Orange.

Feel: Muted / Crisp.
The feel perhaps was more muted with Flash Black but this was not a problem in any way; slightly more muted compared with Super Smash Orange. I wouldn’t really call Flash Black a crisp poly. It’s not mushy it’s more muted and comfortable. It definitely plays softer than Super Smash Orange; it seems pretty arm friendly. It lives up the stiffness rating on TW University string comparison.

Spin – I’d rate the spin at average for a round poly. There is no problem shaping the ball with this string. You can take a big get at the ball and get rewarded with very decent topspin; or biting backspin on a slice.

Durability – so far after a couple of sets of singles, some time on the ball machine, and more time playing Australian in the wind than I could possibly stand, hardly any wear. I expect durability to be fine; I’m not a string breaker especially with polys.

Playability Duration – see above; so far hardly any to no notching. I did see probably about 10-20% tension loss this week but it seems to have stabilized around 40 lbs. Playability remains good.

Tension Recommendations – I might sting it up to 55 next time around. I just want to get a little more control out of it. Nothing written in stone here.

Additional thoughts – I went back and took a look at TW University string comparison; just to see how my experiences in comparing Flash Black to Super Smash Orange on court stacked up with the Professor’s analysis. Pretty much what I thought; Flash Black (color aside) is slightly less stiff at 193 versus 211 for Super Smash Orange. They’re both similar on energy return and even though it’s not listed for Flash; I’d say they’re pretty comparable in Spin potential as the TWU has Super Smash at 5.7 and Flash is unlisted or untested. So yeah I like Flash and I’d say it makes for a good winter / spring poly where you might want a little extra pop while maintaining arm comfort with heavier balls outdoors in the cooler weather. I ordered a set of the Orange Flash so I’ll be trying that out after this one. I think this is a very good value and a great introductory poly for anyone to try. Kudos to TW and Kirschbaum for making this string test possible. Totally worthwhile.

Tension(s) used for playtest: 44# on a 2021 Dunlop CX 200 Tour 16*19 with added weight floating around the inside of the throat (lol) and countered inside the handle under the butt cap.

I'm a 4.0C player with an eastern to semi-western FH and a OHBH. I hit a pretty flat ball but can generate spin when needed.

Power/Control: The power was low until it settled and opened up around the 2.5 hour mark. Power was then ok until I sheared it on a mishit at the 12 hour mark. Control was good throughout the playtest. Nothing remarkable but was noticeable. The low launch angle also added to predictability and control.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): The feel was dead until it settled then it just felt neutral. I feel that this is the best word to describe it as it was not a stiff string, did not give my arm any issues but was not plush either.

Spin: This is a flat hitting string. Topspin production was not easy. All groundies stayed pretty low to the ground. Kick serves did not have any bite. Slices, however, were easy to generate and had really good action.

Durability: Durability seemed to be very good. If my hitting partner didn't jinx me into shearing it at around the 12 hour mark, I think I would have been able to get another 4 plus hours out of it before having to declare it dead and cutting it. Notching at the 12 hour mark looked to be less than 50%.

Playability Duration: Playability seemed very good as well. The string bed was consistent. I started to feel a change between the 10 and 12 hour mark before I sheared it. Control felt like it was starting to degrade but did not feel like it was completely falling off a cliff.

There was a lot of cross string movement during my first session of play but it settled thereafter to have no noticeable movement until the break. Notching was not very deep at that point so the lack of locking up made sense. As mentioned, I think I would have gotten another 4 plus hours where I'd start to see strings lock up.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why): I think 44# was good to have a nice balance of power and control but I would drop the crosses to 42# to see if I can extract pocketing and plushness.

List any additional thoughts (optional): I think my best description of the Kirschbaum Flash 1.25 (black) strings is that it is a neutral poly. All characteristics about it is "ok." Everything was good but not remarkable but, at the same time, I don't have anything negative to say about it. This is a very good quality to have for players who are looking for an introduction into the world of polys.

As always, much thanks to the TW team and Kirschbaum for allowing me to participate in this playtest. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tension(s) used for playtest
35 lbs

Power/Control
I didn’t feel any inherent power from the string, but considering it was strung at 35lbs, I expected a bit more power on my shots. However, what I did get was very good depth without having to put more air into my shots. I could swing up on the ball and get plenty of spin, but with a flatter trajectory. Also, depth was very good on shots that I hit out on, but also on balls where I was on the run and could just poke or stab at the ball. Two areas I struggled with probably due to the low tension was on drop shots and blocked returns. Drop shots had little feel and landed very shallow and didn’t have good bite, so they just sat up mostly. Blocked returns sailed on me quite a bit, but I was able to compensate by purposely opening the racquet face and giving the ball some air and aiming deep, so high and deep but without any real bite or weight of shot. Control on my lobs was great! I was able to get balls high over most ppl and land them deep. Slice backhands were nice but sailed if I didn’t catch them square on the stringbed. Serves didn’t feel more powerful, but I was still able to get good depth on my serves when I was tired and not swinging as hard.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
Flash felt pretty stiff at first hit but mellowed out after a couple of sets. After that, it felt pretty crisp and controlled. I would not call this string comfy or mushy even at 35 lbs.

Spin
Spin generation felt slightly enhanced by the string and the low tension really allowed the ball to pocket and it felt like the string was holding the ball in for a second, then throwing it back across the net. I felt like I could hit good spin with less effort on the stroke due to the ball pocket and trampoline effect. The primary stroke I felt spin generation might have been more enhanced was on my 2nd serve. I could see the ball come down in the box from a higher angle and jump a bit more, but I feel that might have been the lower tension too, not just the string itself. There was good ball bite on my 2nd serve that I felt even with a slower swing speed. Swinging at my normal 2nd serve speed resulted in the ball sailing by a lot.

Durability
I have not broken a poly in 15 yrs, so for me durability seems fine. I can imagine this string being a bit dead after a short period, but I haven’t gotten there yet.

Playability Duration
I’ve logged about 12 sets on these strings so far playing two mixed doubles, two men’s doubles, and three singles match. I have not noticed a significant drop off in tension or playability for me, but I did string this at 35 lbs to start so that might be why the tension loss isn't feeling as pronounced.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why)
I liked the low tension for this string, but would be curious on how it plays in the mid 40s maybe.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
Trying a low tension with some other full poly setups didn't feel as good as with the Flash. Those strings (Focus Hex, Ultracable, V-Square, and Cyclone Tour) felt mushy right off the bat at lower tensions. Flash kept it's playability over the 12 sets I played and was pretty consistent over that time, about a month total.
The all black string in my Solinco WO 305 16x19 looked pretty good too! (y)

Additionally, some hitting partners got a couple extra sets because we want to try Flash out as a hybrid. It quite nice in a full-bed, but I think it could really shine in a hybrid. I'll keep you posted.

I finally got around to stringing K Flash as a poly / poly hybrid... Hyper-G 17 mains and Flash crosses. Pure Strike 98 16x19 @ 44 / 46 and I am liking his combo very much.
Great feel, nice spin, a touch more control. It keeps all the things I like about Kirschbaum Flash and adds a bit more spin potential thakns to the Hyper-G. These two strings really complement each other IMO and are better together than full-beds of either. The Flash definitely makes the Hyper-G feel better, more comfortable and more solid feeling.

Color: Black 1.25

Tension: 52lbs in a 2020 Yonex Ezone 98 Tour w/leather grip

Power/Control: Decent level of control. I normally play with a multi/poly or poly/multi hybrid (depending on season). When hitting right in the sweetspot, control was surgical. Anything off the dead center of the sweetspot and it was a crapshoot---directionally it was predictable, but depth varied considerably. Compared to other polys i've tried, this one didn't offer much room for error.

Feel: The string was pretty crisp/firm and not what I would call "soft." After about 2 hours of heavy hitting, it did settle in a bit and open up. Launch angle was good, as I'm more of a flat/through-the-ball hitter, and I found no issues with having to adjust my normal strokes to either reign in the height of my shots, nor try to provide extra "lift" to clear the net and achieve depth to my shots.

Spin: Nothing to write home about, but as noted above, I'm not a heavy spin hitter. I'd say the spin was decent, fairly predictable, and on par with other round polys, such as Poly Tour Pro, Kirschbaum Pro Line II or PL Evolution. When I wanted to access more spin via stroke adjustments or to pull the ball off the court, I was able to effectively.

Durability: The durability has been good, I'm about 12 hours in and just starting to feel it in my arm. Notching is moderate, so it will either break in my next session or I'll cut it out.

Playability Duration: As noted above, it took a couple hours to open up and I'm about 12 hours in and feeling like it has run its course. For the price, 10 hours of decent, predictable and consistent playability is respectable for my playing style.

Tension Recommendations: I definitely would not increase tension on a similar racquet as mine, but I'm also not one to play with very low tensions. For my normal hybrid setups, I'm stringing mains at anywhere from 52-58lbs, so I thought 52 for this playtest would give me a decent comparison point. I honeslty would consider picking up a couple sets and trying out in 2lb lower increments (50, 48) to see if there is noticeable differences.

List any additional thoughts (optional): I had fun with this playtest, and definitely want to thank TW for the opportunity to participate. For reference, I'm a USTA 4.5 baseliner with big serve, playing mostly 18+ singles. While there was nothing particularly outstanding about the string, it did enough things decently well, that for the price, I'll strongly consdier picking up a couple more sets to test at different tentions (though I would try the yellow color, as I hear it may be less "muted" than black). In short, I do think this would qualify as a solid "baseline" poly for people just delving into the poly world--price is great, and performance offers some solid measuring points by which other polys can be gauged or evaluated. Not surprised by all of this, as I'm pretty familiar with Kirschbaum strings---I do think they have some excellent offerings and have not really disappointed me yet!

What color did you review? For this playtest I received the Kirschbaum Flash 1.25 in black.
Tension(s) used for playtest: For the playtest I put these strings in my Pure Aero 98 and strung it to a tension of 60lbs.
Power/Control: I found these strings to be fairly neutral in most regards. For reference, I normally like to play a softer sided string for extra bite in my PA98, so I was expecting these round strings to be a little overpowered and difficult to control. Those expectations were wrong. I found that these strings gave me back exactly what I put into them. When I loaded up and drove through my shots I was not lacking for power, yet they also were not overpowered. Additionally, when I practiced solid stroke mechanics I never felt that these strings lacked control. Like most round strings, the stringbed response was extremely predictable.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): These strings were comfortable, but not overly muted. I never experienced any discomfort or pain as I have with extremely stiff/harsh strings in my already stiff racquet. I have to say that I enjoyed the feel on these strings quite a bit. I felt as though I had a great feel on the ball, even though they provided a comfortable response.
Spin: Spin was average on these strings. Being a round string you really have to generate your spin through your technique and swing mechanics. That being said, good strokes are rewarded with plenty of spin. At no point was I frustrated with my kick serve, slices, and baseline strokes due to a lack of spin.
Durability: These strings held up for about 8 hours of play before the characteristics began to change slightly. They seem to have excellent tension maintenance for their stiffness, but I did notice that control, power, and spin all began to gradually decline as they began to notch and lose tension. I still have yet to break them after at least 12 hours of hitting.
Playability Duration: As noted above I would say that these strings did not begin to lose playability until between the 6-8 hour mark depending on how intense your matches/practices are.
Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why): The tension was actually perfect for me. I had plenty of control and pop on the ball when I needed it at 60 lbs.
List any additional thoughts (optional): I would most definitely buy these strings for future use and they are an excellent choice for those in the market for round strings! Thank you TTW and Kirschbaum for allowing me to participate in this playtest!!

The Chairman3's review of Kirschbaum Flash Black

Preamble: From the beginning it kind of felt like my racquet got strung at the wrong tension. It felt very tight, low-powered outside the sweetspot, smaller sweetspot, and never really loosened up. The performance was inconsistent with the other strings I've used in this racquet at the same tension. Maybe it's the pre-stretch, but it seems unlikely it would have that huge an impact. Wanted to put this at the beginning to better frame my review observations. I will touch on it more in additional thoughts.
What color did you review? Black
Tension(s) used for playtest: 48lbs
Regular string setup: Poly Tour Strike 1.20, Hawk Power, Big Banger OG, testing alot of strings continuously
Racquet used for test: Solinco Whiteout 18x20 with leather grip

Power/Control of test string: So despite the packaging I didn't find it to be overly powerful like some softer polys. I understand why they say powerful because it strays more toward the power side in the response than the more stiff/dead control polys. Honestly it strikes a nice balance of not feeling dead but still having some control. It is firmer and the only downside is it falls too much in the middle. I either want a little more power or a little more directional control. It didn't quite give me the confidence on every shot. As my preamble said, I do think power could have been impacted by being strung too tight. At a looser tension it probably opens up a bit more. The power also dropped off quite a bit outside the sweetspot which usually isn't caused by the string alone, I find it usually more impacted by tension. Overall, a good balance of power and control, but too much in the middle for me.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): The feel was quite firm. It didn't really feel dampened, the feedback was good, pretty direct, but definitely firm. I didn't experience any arm pain but, I wouldn't say it's arm-friendly. You're probably safe if you stay at or below low 50's, of course racquet dependent. Also mine could have felt a little firmer due to the possible too high tension. The feel remained consistent throughout, which is a positive; maybe the pre-stretch works?

Spin: For a round poly, I'd call it pretty average. Coming off of Hyper-G round, this has less "easy" spin than that string. I don't think it was providing much free spin like HGR did, where if you maybe half swing or block-back a ball you'll still get decent spin off of it. I commented earlier this string kind of gives you what you put into it and I think that is accurate for the spin category.

Playability Duration: I played about 7-8 hours with it, probably only a quarter notched (I don't break poly, so I'm not surprised). It was definitely still playable. I was starting to get hints of tension loss from the feel and sound. It definitely wasn't dead and I could've kept using it. The feel was also pretty consistent throughout the playtest, no major change in the response or feedback. I was actually hoping it would loosen some and feel a bit softer but it didn't dramatically.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?): Again, my racquet felt like it got strung higher than 48lbs. So I feel the sample size is too small to draw a conclusion. I've used stiffer strings than this at the same tension and it seemed about right. I'd probably keep it the same.

List any additional thoughts (optional): My thoughts are pretty mixed. It feels like my racquet was strung at the wrong tension but, if not, then Flash really didn't impress me much. It reminds me of Isospeed Baseline, just a basic poly. It will give you what you put into it, performance-wise, and for a price. Baseline probably wins because it is less than half the price, however. The other aspect is the possible bad stringjob. Because I like to give strings a fair shake, I will probably have to re-test this string and see if I get the same results. Typically, I just want strings to have a bit more identity. The string was by no means bad, but I can easily think of reasons to use others over it.

As always, a huge thank you to @TW Staff! I always enjoy these playtests and feel very fortunate to be able to continue participating.

POLYCOMFORT!

I'll throw my final take on Kirschbaum Flash 1.25 (black), even though I wasn't on the test, but volunteered into it since I already had sets on my own. I have played the 1.20 gauge Max Power (silver and red), Flash (black and orange), Evolution and XPlosive Speed. I feel I have a good picture about their products in regards to what they can offer to a player of my level (intermediate, non-pro).

Keep in mind, the total hour played were 9-10 approx, with several days unplayed in between due to rainy weather. But this can be the case for intermediates anyway who play 1-2 times a week. I usually play 3 times a week (6 hours).

* The Head Youtek Speed MP 16*19 has a very thin 20mm beam and is very headlight, so I have added 4 grams at 9 and 3. Quite new racket for me and I've only played RS Lyon 1.25 and this is my reference string for this one. Hitting mostly very fast, flat and through the ball and using top-spin mostly on cross-court forehand and backhand drills.

What color did you review? Black

Tension(s) used for playtest: 23/23kg

Power/Control: Power was on the low-to-moderate side, especially during the 3-4 first hours. Then, I did notice the stringbed becoming more launchy and more forgiving. Controlling the depth of my shots was pretty easy to do. I never felt issues with finding the right depth, even during the last 2 hours of playing when the stringbed felt softer than at first.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp Comfortable?): I'd say the black variation feels more dead than the orange one, stiffer than RS Lyon (same tension). It's definitely not a mute string.

Spin: spin assistance was its weakest attribute on this tight 16*19 pattern. Backhand slices and finesse shots like drop-shots were very good, but that's mostly on the racket's vey good maneuverability and thin beam. On cross-court hitting drills, I get a bit more assistance from RS Lyon 1.25.

Durability: durability wise I feel it hold its characteristics longer than full-bed of XPlosive Speed 1.23 on a TF40 315 16*19. I for sure noticed the stringbed becoming softer and more forgiving after staying on this racket for 2 weeks. Less durability than Evolution and for sure less than Max Power (most stable string ever maybe).

Playability Duration: better than Alu-based/marketed strings. This one will not stay out of place or notch as fast.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why): If I was to play it again with the same racket, I would sting it at low 20s for more power needed against an ITF level player I played against the last day! On the Diadem Elevate V2 and Nova FS100 I'd use the same tension absolutely.

List any additional thoughts (optional): like I've already said about Kirschbaum strings, Flash is the best option for someone who wants to get into knowing this brand. The 1.20 bright variations feel nice playing them low-medium intensity of hitting. Very advanced players should string the bright variations a bit tighter or choose to go for the Evolution. Very durable (prestretched) strings. I don't think an intermediate player would state any crazy tension loss issues with Kirschbaum strings. The Black variation is not a string I would switch to or buy a full reel. I prefer the Orange variation.

Kirshbaum Flash 1.25 playtest

  • What color did you review?
    • Black
  • Tension(s) used for playtest
    • 54lb all around (both mains and crosses) on a Wilson RF97 v13 racquet.
  • Power/Control
    • Excellent power for a poly. Excellent depth control once hitting confident with topspin. May not be the best in directional control but good enough as long as you don’t go crazy with change of directions and angles, and apply good shot selection. I assume 1.30 may provide more directional control probably at the cost of some power.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
    • Comfortable and slightly muted. But still responsive to the ball. Aggressive baseliners would find this string to be really good to keep hitting aggressive heavy baseline to baseline shots all day. The string is responsive, and so felt like it enhanced the sweet spot area of the racquet. Slight mishits were not obvious. That being said, the extra comfort comes at a cost of some lost touch/feel. May not be the best if your game is built around the feel at the net and half volleys.
  • Spin
    • Excellent. KFlash is very slick and slippery, and it does retain this property for a long duration. Even at 15hr mark the string had a good snap-back. Also I believe the 1.25mm string has a good bite on the ball. Baseline aggressive topspin shots were excellent with this string, and I found it to be very consistent
  • Durability
    • Good. I did not break the string after 15hrs of play, but the mains had a good amount of notching by then, and it looks like it may break by around 20hr mark. But it may also has to do with the fact that, I was doing a lot more aggressive baseline hitting/rallies with this string since it was really fun with this. I would say the raw durability is probably slightly less than other common poly strings.
  • Playability Duration
    • Excellent. Even though the string may not be the best in terms of durability, the actual useful play time of this string seems to be better than most other soft poly strings. K-Flash retained its snapback properties throughout the playtest and the tension loss was normal and gradual. It is very playable even at 15hr mark, and I I don’t think I would have to cut this string till it hits 20hr mark. I also noticed that the tension maintenance is pretty good, considering that this is a relatively softer and responsive poly.
  • Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why)
    • KFlash performed pretty good at 54lbs, and I will probably keep this tension if I take this to a match. I may try experimenting with a few lb lower tension to see what changes, especially since this string is prefetched from factory by Kirshbaum.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional)
    • Kirshbaum Flash was definitely a pleasant surprise in its performance. It is an all around performer, and is definitely a hidden gem. Thanks TW & Kirshbaum for pointing me out to this via this playtest, and I am totally convinced of getting a reel whether I switch to it or not (too many good strings, and I really have to make up my mind). I hope that Kirshbaum keeps the recipe for this string and won’t change it in the near future. Having additional colors to choose from is a good bonus.
I would recommend this string to anyone who is looking for an all around performance, and not very specific to any extremes. Players who prefer a slightly more bite on the ball could still benefit from this string when using crosses along with a more shaped string in mains.

I received the Kirschbaum yellow string on 2/23/24. It was strung the same day on my Wilson Blade 104 V8 @ 56 pounds. This mirrors the tension of my current setup, Solinco Revolution 1.70 . I’m 67 years old, USTA 3.5, move well around the court. I consider myself a baseline player who tries to use placement over power.

POWER: At 56 lbs I find the power adequate and satisfactory. You get out of the strings what you put into them based on your swing speed. Depth was easy to control once I got a “feel” for the string. I was able to keep the ball deep in the court with a fast-swing speed. Shorter balls with a slower swing speed. Overall depth control was very good, I was able to place the ball consistently and accurately deep or short in the court as needed.

CONTROL/SPIN: At first, I would say accuracy was just OK if I was picking medium targets, smaller targets, not so much. As I played more with the string, I found accuracy improving to the point smaller targets (2’ diameter circle or less) could be consistently hit. Down the line passing shots were no problem. The string is smooth and very slick feeling. I thought the “bite” on the ball to generate topspin would be lacking due to the slickness of the string. I was surprised when I found after a short period of adjustment, topspin was no issue and surprisingly easy to generate. Between controlling swing speed and generating top spin, it was pleasant and fun to move the ball around the court with ease.

FEEL: Bottom line…this is a very comfortable string. On contact with the ball there was a smooth and shock/vibration free feeling. I liked the feel of the ball on the strings, it gave the feeling of soft contact, smooth pocketing and rebound. Nothing was being transferred into my arm which was a distraction or discomfort. I believe this also contributes to control/accuracy.

DURABILITY: I put a little over 14 hours on the strings. Performance improved after about 1 hour of play and at the end of the 14 hours, no wear or “notching” was observed with no degradation in play. I will continue with it for a couple of more sessions (2-6 hours) but will replace it at that point regardless of condition or playability.

PLAYABILITY: I think this string will appeal to a wide variety of players (2.0 – 4.0). It obviously will depend on your playing style and what you want/need from a string. But it’s a good option IMHO, that, based on performance and cost it warrants a test drive.

TENSION: I think I strung it higher than most testers @ 56 pounds. In the Wilson Blade 104 V8, I think this was a good call for my playing level and style. I was very satisfied with all performance aspects. With a less powerful racket I would experiment at the lower end of recommended tension, a more power-based racket, I would experiment at the higher end of recommended tension.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: First, thank you to TW and Kirschbaum for the opportunity to participate in this test. I appreciate the opportunities afforded to myself and others to test products and provide our varied opinions. I liked the string to the extent I ordered a couple of sets to re-string my racket with to see if it continues to perform well for me. That’s probably the best indication of my overall thoughts of this string.

ONE FINAL NOTE: I ran through a series of drills with my Proton which I typically run during practice. I compared historical percentages of my preferred string/tension to the percentages of the Kirschbaum setup. Cones are set up in various locations with a 10-ball sequence to obtain an easy percentage. The ball must land within a 3’ diameter of the cone to count. I found with the Kirschbaum string my percentage was up by one or two balls per drill. With being able to duplicate the drills from one string setup to the other, I felt this additional comparison would help validate my conclusions.

Tension(s) used for playtest

50 lbs

Power/Control

Above average power for a poly. Average control.

Feel

Initially feels fairly stiff. I typically hit twice a week for 2hrs each (first hr hitting, second hr playing singles or doubles). During my first session, I started to feel a twinge in my elbow 1.5hrs in. The following day I had some lingering soreness. For the rest of the sessions (hours 3-10) the stringbed seemed less stiff. I did not experience any further soreness after the first session. Overall, I would say the feel is fairly crisp, but needs a little bit of break in time to get over the initial stiffness.

Spin

Moderate. Probably average to slightly above average for a rounded poly. I was able to get decent bite on slices and was able to create fairly heavy spin when I set up properly for topspin forehands.

Durability

Excellent. I am not a string breaker but after the 10 hrs of playtesting I only notice a small amount of notching.

Playability Duration

Excellent. After an early break in period over the first 1-2 hours, the strings felt consistent from the 3rd to 8th hours. I did not notice any major tension loss but did not measure objectively. At hours 8-10 it is starting to feel a little launchy but definitely still playable. I will probably cut out after the next 2 hour session at the 12 hour mark out of precaution for arm health, but in terms of playability I could probably stretch it for longer if I wanted.

Tension Recommendations

Would recommend tension <50. I experienced an initial period of discomfort, would consider trying ~45lbs next time.

List any additional thoughts

Overall I thought the string was a well rounded performing poly. It does everything about average to slightly above average. With its affordable cost, I would consider using this as a “baseline” string for racket playtests to let the frames shine.

As there was some initial stiffness, I would also consider trying this rounded poly as a hybrid with multifilament.

Thanks to TW and Kirschbaum for letting me participate in this playtest!

Tension(s) used for playtest 53 mains 48 crosses - Prince Warrior 100 10% prestretch on an electronic machine.

Power/Control good power, a little trampolining, so I can't say "good" control. It is softer than The tecnifibre razorsoft string I tested earlier, but not as accurate.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) 100 times softer than, say, regular Hyper-G, softer than the aforementioned razorsoft, but not quite as soft as Isospeed Cream

Spin - this is a round slick poly, the only "added" spin you will get from it is polys inherent snapback ability

Durability - most likely it will go dead and need to be cut out long before it will snap. 8 hours in and it hasn't gone dead YET, but I think it is about to.

Playability Duration - see above

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why) I liked it at this slightly lower (for me) tension. I don't know if I would bump up 2 or 3 pounds or not. I think the lower tension was easier on my arm.

List any additional thoughts (optional) - I am not a fan of all poly round setups in general. However, this is one of the strings that, if you want to go that way, the cost is low enough to allow frequent restringing without breaking the bank (like Tecnifibre or Yonex strings) I think this string would make an EXCELLENT cross string in a hybrid, whether gut, multi, or shaped poly. It is soft and slick enough to really allow the mains to assert their characteristics. It is cheap enough to cut out and restring the crosses only in a gut/poly setup (I know some consider this heresy, but I have now done it successfully several times.) It is not going to revolutionize your game, but it will not hurt it in any way either.

THANK YOU TW!

BTW - now that the weather appears to have broken, I can get outdoors and get my reviews doen in a more timely fashion.

Tension(s) used for playtest - Prince ATS Textreme Tour 95 at 55 lbs prestretched 20%
Power/Control - high control and low launch angle for 1.25 gauge poly. Absorbs the power when receiving strong heavy balls.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) - soft, crisp and comfortable.
Spin - great spin but it lands shorter than expected due to low power. For my game with this string I had to hit through to keep it deep on the court.
Durability - very durable poly string.
Playability Duration - huge tension drop after the first hitting but stays consistent afterwards. Started losing too much control after a week and a half of of hitting.
Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why) - Yes I would string it at 50 lbs for more depth and power.
Thank you TW and Kirschbaum!

Coming off of Hyper-G round this will be a nice comparison.
TW lists Poly Tour Pro as similar to Flash and I consider PTP to be similar to Hyper-G round, so alot of overlap in my opinion.
Like a venn diagram
Wanted to revisit this, forgot I wrote it, short version...
HGR>PTP>Flash

Long version...
I prefered the feel, spin, and power of HGR over the other two.
PTP feels slightly stiffer but muted, Flash felt very firm but more raw, HGR was more direct than PTP but a bit cleaner feeling and less firm than Flash.
Flash seemed to have the best tension maintenance but I still contend it got strung too tight. (I'm a novice with pre-stretched poly so maybe it just makes that big a difference).
If feel isn't part of your game and you just baseline bash balls, go Flash, the price makes it a great value.
If you want more feel go HGR.
If you like a dampened feel or want to look like Kyrgios with your Ezone, PTP is the answer.

Tension(s) used for playtest
48lbs in Vcore 98

Power/Control:
I kinda felt at first that this string was pretty high powered for a poly. After a couple hours it kinda settled out, but I felt a bit more lower than some of the other strings I've tried recently. When hitting spin shots I needed to make sure my racket head speed was a bit more to impart more spin to keep the balls in play.
Control was also pretty good. Didn't notice any drop from my current setup. My shots felt pretty consistent with my play level. I didn't notice any spraying of my shots. Really like this string for my backhand slice, but not so much for topspin shots.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp?
Comfortable?)
The string was very comfortable to hit with even at a full bed. Didn't notice any discomfort during the entire play test. The string felt firm but not to the level I would call it stiff. To me, shots felt slightly muted. I was kinda on the fence with the overall feel of the string. I did feel that the string did settle in and feel improved after a few hours hitting with it.

Spin
This spin on this string was much less than my current HyperG. I immediately noticed a difference in spin on ground strokes and on spin serves. The space between the ball and the net was noticably less than my shaped poly. I would say that if you as a spin player, I think there are better options. However I think this would be a great option for a cross.

Durability
I am definitely not a string breaker so I usually cut my strings out after playability drops off enough that I notice a difference or some arm discomfort. This string gave me about 12 hours of good playability before I started to notice a difference. Which for me is pretty par for the course. Notching was there but not as pronounced as my regular setup. With that said I would really like to see how this string holds up as a cross with my usual shaped poly.

Playability Duration
String lasted about 12 hours of mostly singles, a couple sets of doubles, and one or two hitting sessions.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why)
I would use this as a cross next time at either the same tension for maybe a couple pounds less. I really liked the comfort of the string and since the notching wasn't as bad as my usual setup, I'd like to see how it would hold up with a shaped poly. The lack of spin really would deter me from using it as a main.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
Stringing this up on my stringer was really great. The coil memory was very little which made stringing this in a one piece really great.
Overall, I don't think that this is for me as a full bed, but I would love to try this as a hybrid with
another string in the main.

Tension(s) used for playtest: 42 pounds on a Babolat Aeorpro Drive

Power/Control: For context, I've been playing with synthetic gut (51 LBS) for the past 5 months. I strung at a much lower tension than usual because I was a bit worried about elbow/wrist pain. The power level was pretty low, as expected. If I gave it a big rip, the control level was pretty good. I think big hitters will like this string.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) I was expecting a dead, stiff string, and that's pretty much what I experienced. But it felt comfortable enough for my somewhat sensitive elbow/wrist.

Spin: I hit pretty flat. But when I tried to hit with some topspin, I was hoping to feel some bite. Perhaps because I don't swing fast enough, but I did not feel much bite.

Durability: I don't break poly strings, so I will play with this string until it is time to cut them out. (after 5 more doubles matches)

Playability Duration: I think I can get about 5 or 6 more doubles matches out of this string before I start to notice any dropoff.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why) next time, I'll drop the mains to 40, just to see if I can feel a bit of snapback.

List any additional thoughts (optional) This was more an initial impression than an in-depth review. I'm only playing once a week these days, but will be increasing my tennis in April as the weather warms up. I played one doubles match, and did not feel any elbow/wrist pain afterwards, so I will definitely be trying out this string a few more times. Would be happy to write a follow-up in a few weeks after I get a much better feel for this string. Thank you TW for allowing me to participate.

Kirschbaum Flash Review

What color did you review?

Yellow

Tension(s) used for playtest
44/40 in my customized Yonex Vcore Pro 97HD (usual string is Tru Pro Ghostwire at 44/40)

Power/Control
Definitely more control-oriented. Power level was very low, similar to more traditional poly strings. Definitely lower powered and more control than my usual string setup.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
When I was stringing this string, it felt fairly soft. However, it felt much more crisp when I actually began hitting with it. At times it did feel a touch muted at times, but overall I'd say it leans towards crisp more so than anything else. It was surprisingly comfortable as well for how crisp and low-powered this string was.

Spin
Excellent spin for a round poly. I found slightly more spin from Flash than I did during the Hyper-G Round playtest. Not as spin-friendly as many shaped poly strings, but definitely one of the best round poly strings in terms of spin production.

Durability
Very good durability. After 12 hours of play there's some minor notching but it isn't too bad.

Playability Duration
Excellent playability duration for a poly. I noticed it beginning to die around the 10 hour mark, when most poly strings are closer to the 6-8 hour mark. I will be cutting it out now after 12 hours, but would likely cut it out a little earlier in the future.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why)
I would string it just a touch lower. I already string most poly strings pretty low, but with it being a lower-powered string than I usually use I would definitely drop the tension a couple pounds.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
Overall I really enjoyed this playtest. It is one of the most comfortable control-oriented/low-powered poly strings out there, somewhat along the lines of Luxilon 4G Soft, but at a MUCH better price point. I would highly recommend this string to any 4.5+ level player looking for a budget-friendly, control-oriented poly, especially if they want to avoid going too stiff. It is not soft enough for those with arm issues, but is a great option for those that want the trademark poly control but want to try and avoid arm issues before they begin.

Tension(s) used for playtest - 50 lbs full bed in a 2021 Yonex Vcore 98

Power/Control - I felt this string to be fairly low-powered. Strung at 50, I felt that I got some decent power from the lower tension, not from the string itself. The control was there. To me, this had classic polyester characteristics.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) - Crisp and comfortable. NOT so crispy that it felt stiff or harsh. Again, classic poly characteristics. I absolutely hate harsh or dead-feeling poly, and this string was neither of those. Nothing special, but nothing bad either.

Spin - Pretty standard, as polys go. The snapback was there from the beginning and lasted through the first 8 hours. After the eight hour or so, I noticed the strings begin to misalign and not return to their position. Around that time, the control started to leave as well.

Durability - I did not break these strings, but opted to cut them out after about 8 hours. As mentioned, the strings lost the snapback and the control declined quickly.

Playability Duration - Pretty much the same as the above. After 8 hours or so, I cut them out due to a drop in playability.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why) - I would keep it at 50 lbs. I really enjoyed this string, and do not think I would get any benefit from going tighter.

List any additional thoughts (optional) - I tested this string right after the Hyper G Round playtest. I liked Flash a lot more than HGR. Overall solid string!

Thanks Kirschbaum and Tennis Warehouse!

Kirschbaum Flash (1.25) Playtest

Regular Setup:
Yonex Vcore 95 2023 | Tru Pro Black Knight (BK) (1.23) @ 48/46 (lockout stringer)
Playtest Setup: Yonex Vcore 95 2023 | Kirschbaum Flash BLACK (1.25) @ 48/46 (lockout stringer)

During this playtest, I played mainly doubles at USTA 4.5 level. I had about 2 hours in total of singles tie-breaks/ground stroke points against very high 4.5 level players. Additionally, I am coming right off of Solinco Hyper-G Round (HGR) playtest, so I will make some comments in comparison to HGR as well.
  • Power/Control: Flash is a low-powered polyester. Even among black polyesters, I felt power was lower than average. This mainly showed in depth control when I was put on the run, but this was a minor problem. Especially coming off of HGR, which has a beautiful pop off the string bed, Flash doesn't reward you as much for good weight transfer. I felt that HGR gave me more velocity when I put in the same amount of acceleration. In comparison to BK, Flash power is slightly lower but negligible. As for shot consistency, Flash provides great reproducibility of shots; I had very little erratic shots. Control is slightly above average, but I felt that it was no where near the level of directional and depth control that BK provides. This might be related to my ability to feel the ball better with BK than Flash.
  • Feel: Expectedly from a black polyester, Flash is also relatively muted and low response. Especially, compared to BK, which provides significant pocketing/"grinding" feel, I did not feel that enough with Flash. Flash is not stiff but not super comfortable; it is a bit towards the softer side over firmer side. I did not feel it to be crisp personally, but I also don't really understand what "crisp" is supposed to be in tennis strings... Flash seems pretty average in response for black polysters. Nothing special in that department.
  • Spin: Unfortunately, spin felt super lacking coming right off of HGR. In hindsight, I don't think Flash spin level is low by any means for a round poly. But strictly looking at the performance on court, ball movement with Flash was so minimal compared to HGR that it took me a full session to adjust my game. Towards the end of the playtest, I adjusted well, but I was definitely looking for more dip on my shots. BK provides more spin, likely from it's sided nature, and, for my style, I could use a bit more spin than what Flash provides right now.
  • Playability Durability: Potentially a one-off string job, but I felt like Flash dropped off pretty quick after 2-3 hour mark. Mains were moving around crazily and string bed felt noticebly stretched out. It was a struggle to maintain higher racquet head speed to generate the same amount of velocity. Interestingly, notches in the mains were the deepest I've personally seen. Flash broke around 8 hour mark, but the notches were so deep (>70% sawed through) even by 6 hours, I don't know how it lasted this long and also why I continued to play with it for so long. Overall, Flash is a bit lacking in durability but lasts long enough to get 2-3 matches, so not a dealbreaker.
  • Tension Recommendation: 48/46 felt fine. If I had to change, I would likely go lower looking for a bit more power. I would be curious to know whether going higher would give me a bit more feel and have the confidence to direct the ball a bit better.
  • Summary (Additional Thoughts): Black Flash is a solid polyester, especially at the $9 price point. It does manage to provide passable scores in all departments, but it also feels lacking in certain departments when compared to other higher price point strings. To be honest, Flash is a very boring string where it feels like if you put 1 unit of effort in, you get 0.9 out in performance across the board. Very consistent but nothing special, and I just don't see a major reason in picking this string over other black round polyesters. I would actually be very interested in testing how yellow performs compared to black. It seems like other testers are praising the feel of yellow quite a bit compared to back.
Thank you to TW and Kirschbaum for this playtest opportunity!

REVIEW UPDATE : Played this AM with the Kirschbaum Flash 1.25 yellow provided by TW for review. This put approximately 12-14 hours of total playtime on the string which was originally strung @ 56 pounds on a Wilson Blade 104 V8. String performance dropped off significantly to the point where I am replacing it. For future play with this string, 12 hours of court time will be my replacement cycle.

Kirshbaum Flash was definitely a pleasant surprise in its performance. It is an all around performer, and is definitely a hidden gem.

I am trying Kirshbaum Proline-II 1.25 Black in my racquet now, and it is surprisingly similar to the Flash. Maybe Flash is a slightly more responsive, but generally the same characteristics. So in case if anyone want a similar string, but a slightly different feel try Proline-II.

Im currently using yellow flash as a cross with Max power rough and it’s a pretty great little combo. Really nice feel, control and spin.

I think I'm going to cut the K Fkash out of my racquet tomorrow. I just haven't decided if I want to do it before, or after, practice.

My wife had a doubles match late last week. She isn't a string breaker, but I put my racquet w/ K Flash in her bag just in case she needed it.

Well, it turns out that she DID need it, but not for herself! Her partner got there, opened her bag to find her racquet missing. So my racquet got used for a doubles match.

I've been fighting some elbow pain since completing this playtest. I don't think the string caused it, but I do think it contributed. I think poor form and long sets is what caused it, and the poly string just sort of shortened the amount of time I could play before injury.

I'll probably take this racquet to practice tomorrow and see how it feels. If my arm hurts, I'll switch racquets.

It's out.

I used that racquet to hit one ball at practice last night. I feel dramatic saying this, but it was dead. I knew instantly that there was no point in continuing to play with it.

There was very little recoil when cutting a main string. As you can see, much less than when @evermilion popped a string as shown above.

20240403-075542.jpg

I really liked this string when it was in it's prime. Since I string my own racquet, I don't mind restringing often. The price on this is hard to beat, and I would probably plan to restring after each match.

Has anybody tried it in an 18x20 racquet? Big BHS7T fan here, on my Blade, and I have meaning to try something new. I keep reading that stiffer polys are best for tighter stringbeds, so I'm curious how Flash would perform. In case anybody here has tried it?

I used it in an 18x20 Whiteout, similar type of racquet to the Blade. Not sure how the string patterns compare, I know the Whiteout isn't the tightest 18x20.

Overall, the string felt stiff to me. Never really loosened up much, which it is pre-stretched so I think that is the point. It was a firm, pretty direct feeling poly but nothing special or outstanding. It had a nice balance of control and power, spin was average. At the price, $9.50, it isn't an incredible deal and I'd probably pick other strings over it.

I have BHS7T in my racquets now and I can tell you that flash is a lot more softer feeling in racquet when compared to BHS7T. Also round sleek vs sharp 7 sided makes a difference in feel. Even though both are great strings, I can see that if you lean so far towards one, you won't like the other. I think you should probably try flash in the crosses with BHS7T in mains in your 18x20. It will enhance spin, and soften the stringbed, without much difference in overall crispness and feel on baseline shots.
