Tennis Warehouse Playtest: Prince Phantom 2024

A camouflage phantom? This racquet is so stealthy, it could win a match without the player. :)

Comfort and control - I'm intrigued!
Yeah, I put my name for a 100x 290 since it was my favorite from the last models, but would actually want to try a few other models from the line.

The 18x20 for the aforementioned comparison to the Gravity Pro, but especially the 100p as the specs - mainly SW - seem closer to the 100X on this iteration, and I loved the feel of the box beam on the 1st version.

Do we know when the selection process for this one will happen? I am hopeful every time I see this thread updated.

I'm very curious how the 100x 305 compares to my Blade 100. Both at an unstrung weight of 305g with a 100 sq in head. The beam and flex rating are the biggest differences.

So many interesting Prince Racquets all at once...it make you want to try them all !!
Over the years Prince has made some of the easiest to play with racquets and it seems they have covered just about all types of players with their latest release.
I appreciate that Prince is trying to innovate with different materials, weights and sizes while the other manufactures are only iterating on paintjobs. Eventually they'll have to settle on the successful lines, but until then, the playtesters will be busy. ;)

I'm still intrigued by the Zylon material. Speaking for the 100P in particular, I noticed a difference in swingweight numbers listed for each generation.

1st Gen Phantom Pro 100P the Swingweight = 329, NO ATS
2nd Gen Phantom 100P the SW = 328. Twaron is added in the hoop and shaft.
3rd Gen Phantom 100P the SW = 324! Zylon replaces Twaron in the hoop and shaft.

So the swingweights get lower with different materials, especially from Twaron to Zylon. This probably explains why in the TW playtest video review, Troy mentioned it felt slightly more maneuverable than the previous version.

I believe target SW will be 295 unstrung like both versions before. What you list is all close together and matches perfectly with 295 unstrung with just a little tolerance in production. You can have any swingweight combined with any added material because the whole layup will be different between releases.

Looking at their current racquet offerings, Prince is doing a really good job of providing a good array of frames for multiple levels of players.

Yes, that makes sense. It was past my bedtime and shouldn't be online or fed after midnight. lol

Through the years, with both generations of the 100P, I do prefer increasing swingweight by replacing the grip with leather.

I’m in for x 18x20 guys… I’m excited for this play test. I have bunch of 18x20 racquets to compare it to…
Played a friends demo that was weighted up to 330 or so and SW was high 330s. Still swung fast as heck and was stable as a brick wall. Very interesting option in the space. Its a relatively open 18x20 too... I found adequate spin. Slices were pornographic

100p incoming! Legit excited as most know I tend to favor more classic frames, and these specs look good. Getting excited a la my OG Textreme 95 days.

Thanks TW for the opportunity!

Lucky to have been chosen to participate with the 107. Perfect as my racquet has been discontinued and I’m looking for a replacement.

I have a POG from probably 35 years ago to compare it with. When I made my last racquet switch, I strung up my POG and would have strongly considered switching to it if I could have been assured I could get my hands on some frames and grommets. That not being the case, I went a different OS route.

Question to recent users of the Phantom - do you string it a little tighter to compensate for the flex? Or do they play stiffer than the RA would suggest?

My POG is 370 grams and feels like an immovable object despite being pretty flexy.

107G is my gamer. It needs poly b/c it's super open compared to the POG. Hyper G Round 1.25 at 50 lbs works fine for me in terms of control/comfort.

Thanks! My current string of choice is 1.20 Confidential, and I’m using it at 49/45 in a Babolat Aero 112 which is a very open 16x19 pattern also. But the Aero 112 is a 73 RA racquet and the swing weight of every one of mines was in the 340’s with the thin Confidential string. Going from the 27.6” Aero to the 27” Phantom will be a little bit of an adjustment also.

I’ve got some packs of 1.25 Hyper-G Soft but I really have come to prefer dead strings so I can really put a good swing into the ball with an OS frame.

I appreciate your info!

Looks like I missed the boat on the 100p if all emails went out at the same time, definitely will be trying to track down some previous generations of the p's as they're certainly on my radar now!

Dang…That sounds really fricking exciting. Can’t wait

I just got the email for the 100x 305! I cannot wait for my first ever playtest! Thank you tennis warehouse. Highlight of the month . I actually grew up with prince as a kid before moving to babolat. and tried the beast 98 just a few years ago. Excited to try a more comfortable set up! Will send pictures when it comes in!

Thanks TW for the opportunity to Playtest the Phantom 100x 290!!!

Perfect timing with my return from injury tentatively scheduled for next week!

I should have many hitting sessions to really get to know the stick before I go back to playing matches...

Do we know what Prince strings will come with it? Really excited to see how the new version feels!

Beast 98 is an underrated stick. Solid all around performer, stable, and pretty comfortable for its class. Though I found it played a bit sluggish relative to its spec. What was your take?

I would agree it’s an underrated frame. My brother gifted it to me since it matched up very similarly in spec to my aero storms. I would say it had quite a bit of pop for what was expected which I would associate with a sluggish feel. And the 7 pts headlight maybe didn’t feel exactly right. However I thought the combination of the spin and power was excellent and made for a great out of the box experience. Volleys not as smooth as expected and swung through the air more so of a traditional box beam frame to me if that makes sense which also contributes to that heavier feel.
Id give it a above average spin and power for a good ground game
An average stick for serve, not super smooth and wouldn’t win you too many extra points but consistent
Volleys and maneuverability was below average to average for the spec range but absolutely manageable

do you still use the frame? It’s nice to hear about it!

Sounds like we have pretty similar impressions of the Beast. I still have the racket in the quiver to loan out to buddies or even as a backup when I’ve forgotten to restring my rackets. But I've been playing with the 2020 Phantom 100x 305.

I think it’s a solid stick to have in the bag. One of my friends, I gifted it too as his second graphite frame previously using the Wilson burn spin, so the beast was a bit tamer (despite sounding opposite lol) But he used to use it occasionally out of my bag and started to prefer it over his own frame, he still really enjoys the frame.

Currently have the Phantom Pro 100, 97p, 93p, Graphite Pro 90, Powerflex Pro 90. Interested to try the new 100P, since no more 97p or 93p.

Just confirmed. Looking forward to comparing the new 100p to the other Prince phantoms and predecessors in my bag.

Sounds promising. I am onboard for the 18x20. Stoked

Nice! No dice for me - I seem to always get the string reviews and not the racquets when I apply lol. Will be interesting to follow and see what you all think about these!
I take this back - someone backed out and apparently now I'm in to test the 100X 305 - excited for it to arrive and re-live my Prince playing days of my youth! Glad to see Prince coming back these last few years with competitive and innovative offerings again.

Completely random and admittedly silly side note, but does anyone else miss "P or D" or "M or W" as the primary options we'd have when spinning our racquets to decide who serves first? ;-)

The Babolat or Yonex "up or down" can look confusing, and Head is slightly better lol.

I primarily play with Wilson, and choose the "M" option.

If the spinner has a head racquet, I generally allow my childish humor to escape and call "tit up."

I never spin my racket to decide on serve..I did it once and my trap door fell off and it never did go back in properly..
I always use a coin..

I had to go look at the new PJ. The first thing that came to mind was Swamp Thing. I'm not saying that's a bad thing or a good thing but that's the first thing that pops in my head.

As an OG Crossbar POG fan and 100G LB owner, I had to go with the 107g. Supposed to get it next week, can’t wait. I think I’ve bought a number of pro stock Princes from a Seth 10 years ago. Wish they had a new 100G LB
If it was 2015-2017ish, that was me. Glad to meet another POG fan.

Went in the garage and dug out two OLD Prince frames to compare - a POG OS and an OS Precision Graphite. The POG was my racquet back about 40 years ago, while my wife used the Precision Graphite because it was lighter. I would guess the Precision Graphite is going to be much closer in spec and hitting performance to the 107G than the POG. My wife’s racquet still has the synthetic gut, Leoina 66, from that 40 years ago, and it’s still tight and elastic feeling. Just for nostalgia’s sake I’d hate to cut out the Leoina but if an initial hit shows it to be a close relative to the 107G, I’ll restring it with my poly to see how similar it actually is.

With an over grip over a leather grip, and with a 1.25 poly string and Prince string dampener, the POG OS is 384.8 grams. The Precision Graphite which is a 4 3/8 size leather grip and the Leoina 66, is 351.2 grams. I’ll get more precise measurements tomorrow but it is amazing to think my wife used to swing that.

I had a bit more time to make some careful measurements of my two old Prince racquets. On the left is a Precision Graphite, grip size 3, with leather grip and Leoina 66 strings. This was my wife's racquet back in the day.

On the right is my old POG OS. Grip size 4, with a leather grip and overgrip, 1.25 poly strings, and a Prince string dampener.

Both racquets measure 27 1/8" long. Specific measurements, with swingweight as determined by Swingtool:

Precision Graphite: 351.4 grams, 5 points HL or 32.7 cm balance point, and 335 swingweight.

POG OS: 384.4 grams, 10 points HL or 31.1 cm balance point, and 358 swingweight.

Phantom 107G (according to Tennis Warehouse), 323 grams, 7 points HL or 32 cm, 320 swingweight.

So I guess the Precision Graphite really isn't that close in spec. When I bend them, the Precision Graphite is quite a bit more flexible than the POG OS.

Can't wait to get these two racquets plus the Phantom out on court. Nostalgia time!

They really had to roll out the carpet for Iga after her French Open win. Would've been a tide changing moment for them.

Definitely string it lower. My friend used the 100G LB around 20lbs, I’d try lower at first
