Tennis Warehouse Playtest - Solinco Confidential 1.25

Hey Tennis Family!
  • Tension(s); 46lbs
  • Yonex Ezone 98 lead at 3 & 9 46 lbs Yonex Poly Tour Pro
  • Yonex Ezone 98
  • Power was really good I was very surprised as Hyper G and Tour Bite are very firm and control oriented. If I was to string it again I would go a couple pounds higher...
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) Feel was pretty good but muted, but was very comfortable on my shoulder and elbow.
  • Spin: Spin was there for sure, but I did feel like I have to generate my own. Launch off the string bed was very low so I had to make adjustments... Flat hitters will love this string.
  • Durability I hit with this string for around 6 hours and no notching and string has settled in nicely getting some good pocketing.
  • Playability Duration I will hit with this string for at least 10-12 hours regular life of a poly for me.
  • Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?) I will string it up a couple pounds next time, but probably will not use this as my main string. I like a little better feel.
  • List any additional thoughts Overall a good string, but polys are running into issues they are all playing about the same now but this one is a bit softer
BONUS QUESTION
  • Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not? Overgrip was great to me pretty close to Wilson Pro just a little thicker.
Thank @TW Staff for the oppurtunity.

Tension used for playtest: 52M/50X

Regular string set up & tension: Volkl Cyclone Tour 1.30mm 56M/54X. Been using VCT 1.30mm since 2013

Racquet used for test: Pure Aero Plus with Fairway leather grip, Solinco overgrip. 340 grams strung weight

Power: Low. Much less powerful than VCT. I struggled to get the power I wanted at times, especially on flat serves.

Control: Depth and placement seemed consistent with this string but often left groundstrokes shorter than I do with VCT vs same players.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?): I feel this string is extremely muted and not crisp compared to my go-to string of the past six years, VCT. Crisp is a term I would use for a multi like X-1 Bi-phase, and polys like Cyclone, Cyclone Tour, and Tire 1 Firewire. This string feels nothing like those three polys. Babolat Excel is a muted multifilament while X1 Bi-phase is a crisp multifilament. Solinco Confidential 2.0 might feel crisp to some, but doubt they have ever played with Cyclone, Cyclone Tour or Firewire. I started to feel the stiffness in my elbow after multiple days of playing with this string. (edited the last sentence about feel as I didn't finish typing it before submitting my review.)

Spin: Generating spin with a Pure Aero and Solinco Confidential 2.0 isn't hard to do. I had no issue generating loopy groundstrokes with this string, but the depth was shorter than I wanted on many shots due to the lack of power in this string.

Durability: Very good. No notching like some strings. Volkl V-Torque1.28mm and Isospeed Cream 1.28mm are two polys that just break way to quickly

Playability Duration: Consistent string play through 10 hours. No strings sticking out of place, notching was minimal.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time? Explain answer): Strung at 52M/50X vs 56M/54X VCT 1.30mm, but I would lower the tension to something like 47/45 if used again. This string is simply too low powered for me at higher tensions.

List any additional thoughts (optional): Not a string I would switch to personally, as I see this string designed for players who generate much more RHS than I generate, especially on my serve. Like Hyper G, this string needs sufficient RHS, that I simply don't generate on a consistent basis. Hit against a ball machine, played 11 sets of doubles (8 sets 4.5/4.0 vs two 4.0s winning five out of 8 sets vs the 4.5/4.0 and (three sets 4.0's vs 4.0 losing 1-2) and 1 set singles with it against another 4.0. I found my best play with this string in singles winning 12 points in a row at one point vs a 4.0 teammate. I played doubles with it yesterday and found myself struggling with pace on my serve. Switched frames back to one with VCT 1.30 and won my serve on 6 out of 7 service games. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this playtest. Just feel it is designed for players who generate RHS at a level seen with future college players and big-hitting 4.0+ men. This string seems perfect for a couple of 6'5' and 6'6' teammates, but feel it wasn't designed for average 4.0 male players like myself.

BONUS QUESTION: Would you use the included overgrip? Why or why not?
No. Removing the protective cover was a PITA. This needs to get fixed. Solinco should buy some Wilson Pro Overgrips and film four players installing their overgrip vs four players installing Wilson Pro Overgrip, timing the installation. The lack of an easy pull tab to remove the protective cover is an auto no-go for this overgrip.

:giggle::laughing::laughing::-D:-D:-D

But seriously...after struggling for 5 minutes to remove the plastic, it did play fine. But yeah...they need to fix that.

This string is now available in Europe. do you guys know when this will be available in TW USA ?

TW says January. Click above for nice 1st look at product.
WOW,,, incredible. so it will be available by next week ??? at TW ????????????? WOW... I will buy 100 sets. well,, this is not a full review... I would string it bit tighter not looser like he saids though.. maybe my racket head speed is too fast ?? i thught this string was pretty powerful for co-poly

Most of the TW Play Testers and the Talk Tennis Play Testers love 50 and below. So far as power goes... folks seem to split on power level. I myself love 50 / 48 for a starting point with most polys. When using a soft and powerful one I might go up a few pounds and in the summer outdoor hot season for sure. Strings like Volkl Cyclone 17G.. 16G... 50 lbs max. The manufacturers are designing the strings to be played at lower tensions these days. Everyone is different and there are many factors when picking tension... of course. I thought this was a nice video and intro to the string. Talk Tennis Play Testers... spoiler alert!!

Final thoughts:

Tension(s) used for playtest - 51.5 lbs, 10% prestretch
Regular string set up & tension - MSV Focus Hex 1.18 @ 51.5 lbs 10% prestretch
Racquet used for test - Head Gravity MP
Power/Control of test string - both power and control off the string appears more prominent as the string loosed up. Power was much more accessible as the play test went on, you can swing with confidence and expect shot depth with longer strokes; especially with serves. I was and still am getting great command and control through my shot selection. As stated ball came off crisp with volleys.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? as I’ve stated in one of my post, string played relative stuff for my taste 24 hr after it was strung. it took roughly an hour of hitting to “settle” the feel in. Once it broke in, the string played relatively crisp through most of my shots; though there is a bit of muted feel as the play test went along. The overall feel seems to be holding up fairly well with the tension dropping off over time. I would like to play this string at 17 gauge to see if the responsiveness are similar and remains in tact as the tension drops off.
Comfortable?) - being the strings are 1.25, there is a level of stiffness that I haven’t felt in a long time. It definitely took a period of adjustments with swing speed and power generation to reconnect with how I think my arm should feel. Overall I’m surprise I haven’t experience arm fatigue like I did with Tour Bite.
Spin For me spin potential is the highlight of the string. From both wings and serves, spin really came through when it mattered most. I didn’t feel I needed to adjust my swing path to generate ball spin. This was a plus especially when I was hitting shots with depth, really gives someone confidence to be able to hit deep corners falling well inside the court.
Durability - the string didnt play soft for my taste, yet I’m surprise to see relatively noticeable notches early in the play test, after ~8 hours.
Playability Duration as stated from my other post, there was tension drop of roughly 8%. It seems to have stabilized for now. It is still of interest to see how well these string will play ~ 90 day mark.
Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?) - this is a tricky one for me. I want to think I should lower the starting tension upfront since it felt stiff early on. However, current state seems to play exceptionally well. unless I plan on cutting the string frequently, I would be hard press to want to lower staring tension if playability takes a hit down the road.
List any additional thoughts (optional) - as stated I would like to play a thinner gauge of the same string to see if playability and durability stays true to 1.25. I suspect the thinner gauge might not have a long play life as this play test iteration notched early.

BONUS QUESTION
Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not? - my normal go to grip tapes are the Head XtremeSoft. I like it as it feels relative thin. With this grip tape, it’s on the spongy side of my liking, and makes me feel I have a bigger grip.

The same way Fed shanks balls with a 97 square inch racquet. He, like I, play competition that pushes us to and sometimes beyond our limits.

You never mis-hit?
I see...so you have Fed's racket head speed. Playing rec tennis, I hardly ever miss hit with my 85 and 90 square inch rackets.

I see...so you have Fed's racket head speed. Playing rec tennis, I hardly ever miss hit with my 85 and 90 square inch rackets.

I would think it was related to how fast one swings and the swing path they are creating. Players with a flatter angle of attack would have less mishits in general. Watching his strokes from his posted video.. he is really going after the ball. The more "work" you are trying to apply to the ball the more apt one might be to mishit a few balls. From watching the video and knowing the specs of his frame.. I would expect he is hitting a very heavy ball and it would be worth the risk to miss a few and not get pushed around at high 4.5 level tennis. Just some random thoughts to consider.. :). While it is all REC tennis.. this would be the higher end of that REC term...

The Pros don't use 85 and 90 these days... that is because they make a living playing tennis. Lets see... Fed uses 97, Rafa 100 and Joker 100. I think 85 and 90 is the way to go in the future..

I see. Is this the same kind of logic that says because you use the same kind of racquet as some pro, that your bank accounts are equal?
It has nothing to do with your bank account but more with your style of play and skills,
so please don't compare your style and skills to that of Federer's

Time for me to re-review this string after some more hours on the string.
Tension(s) used for playtest
I strung up my racket at 54# on a drop weight stringer.

Regular string set up & tension
My regular string is rpm blast rough 16 @ 54#
alot of times use hybrid of rpm blast rough @ 55# mains and prince synthetic gut w/ duraflex @ 57# crosses.

Racquet used for test
I used one of my main sticks, the Youtek Innegra Speed MP 18x20. It is modded with lead tape and leather to 336g with 325sw. also am using a dampener.

Power/Control of test string
IME this racket is not the ultra controlled string I usually enjoy. It definitely has less control than the tour bite or my usual set up.

Feel
The feel of the string was quite muted or dampened but had very good ball pocketing. It felt comfortable to use and didn't give me any arm problems.

Spin
Spin potential was very good. Im in the phase of transitioning into a more western spin frehand, but still produce flatter shots. But for when I need it, along with the serve, spin production was very good. Lots of bite on the ball and snapback.

Durability
As I said previously, I hit generally flat, so I have yet to break this string. but I do not see any notches in the string yet so that is a good sign.

Playability Duration
Playability is good for a poly. It didn't lose tension as much as my rpm blast. But I do gotta say, It feels a bit more powerful after it looses tension, and after the 6 hours I have played, it is starting to die. not to the point where I have to cut it out though. It would probably another 3 or 4 hours before I would consider cutting it out. keeping in mind that I dont really mind a dead poly.

Tension Recommendations
If I could do this again, I would probably string it at 56 or 57#, simply because the power is more than my preffered amount. Might test out lower tensions.

List any additional thoughts
I do like this string alot, and do reccomend it to anyone who wants a dampened feel with power from a poly.

Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not?
I liked the overgrip alot. my only negative would be that it was a little thick and spongy for my liking. I play with straight leather most of the time, but I definitely liked the tackyness of this grip, and durability was pretty good. unlike other posters have said, I didnt have much trouble getting the plastic off the grip, but I would ask that they make an extra tab for added convenience. Overall good grip, and I might use it if I had a smaller grip.

Hi @TW Staff

Is the overgrip in this playtest Solinco Heaven or Solinco Wonder? There are only two types available at TW at the moment under Solinco and I'm trying to figure out if it is a new item yet to be introduced, or if it is one of the two I mentioned.

I have to get a bunch of overgrips and trying to choose between some offerings.

Thanks!

I hit with Confidential for about 45 pretty intense minutes today and the string response seems to be changing at around 5 1/2 to 6 hours of use. The notching has increased to about 30-40% of the way through, but I'm also noticing wearing on the ball contact surface of the crosses so that the string profile is noticeably rectangular versus the original square shape. The mains are also flattening out but not as much, and their square edges have rounded. I think this is causing the string to lose a bit of grip on the ball and the launch angle seems to be getting lower. Spin levels so far seem unaffected for moderate topspin groundstrokes though with my wrist still healing I'm not hitting any super loopy topspin shots. Underspin shots are getting a bit floatier and don't penetrate through the court like they did in the past. Tension loss seems to have stabilized but the stringbed as a whole seems to be getting a bit harsher, and it's more noticeable if I don't catch the ball cleanly.

I hit a few harder serves and there is still good pop off the stringbed. Spin serves hurt the wrist so I didn't try those. Volleys still have good pop and what seems like the same good control from the start. The mains are moving around and don't return to their original position.

I'll probably hit another 90 minutes with it and if it feels the same as today, I'll probably cut it out and replace it with my usual S7T to get a better back-to-back comparison.

Here's my review of the Solinco Confidential string. I played a total of about seven hours on the string and it has notched 50% or more of the way through. It is likely to break the next time I play so I'm cutting it out. Here's a photo I tried to take along the plane of the strings. My phone camera didn't do a good job with this and I got more of the edge of the sweetspot than the center of the sweetspot. At the top edge of the photo is a relatively un-notched main and that string is probably the fourth main from the edge so you're looking at the 5th, 6th, and 7th main strings whereas the 9th string is the middle of the sweetspot and where it is most notched. You can also see that the ball contact surfaces have worn and the string is now rectangular shaped. The crosses that run from top to bottom appear black and green due to the reflection of the color of my Blade SW104 frame.

The review:

Tension(s) used for playtest:
I strung Confidential using the same tensions as for my regular string: 51 pounds in the center eight mains decreasing to 39 pounds for the outer mains, and 45 pounds for the center five crosses decreasing to 32 pounds for the top and bottom cross.

Regular string set up & tension:
My normal string is 17 gauge Silver 7 Tour, using the same tension method as described above.

Racquet used for test:
Blade SW104, handle weighted via heat shrink sleeves to a final weight of 354 grams and 10 points headlight with the Confidential string installed.

Power/Control of test string:

Confidential has about an average power level. Compared to the other Solinco strings, I would put Hyper-G and Revolution at about the same power level, with Tour Bite a bit less powerful. Confidential feels a little bit more powerful than Hyper-G and Revolution. The ball speed coming off the stringbed increases very consistently with how hard the racquet is swung, and I had an immediate comfort and confidence in playing with it. There's a lively feeling of the ball coming off the strings that lasted throughout the six hours I used Confidential. Compared by my usual Silver 7 Tour, the power levels are lower.

Control from the Confidential string is excellent. I'm able to hit the full spectrum of shots, from the softest to the hardest, and the string provides the ball speed that I'm expecting. Directional control is excellent, and volleys are easy to produce due to moderately low incoming spin sensitivity. When driving the ball, I feel I can aim for slightly smaller targets because of the immediately friendly response that Confidential produces. Compared to the other Solinco strings, Confidential provides about equal control to Tour Bite but with more power, and control feels better than with Hyper-G (which is a bit too muted to provide confidence inspiring feedback) and Revolution which is a bit springy feeling. Control is better than with my usual Silver 7 Tour, which has a bit of a springy feeling on softer shots before firming up on harder shots. That non-linearity takes a bit of time to get used to.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?):
Confidential feels like it has a very good mix of these characteristics. It is stiff enough to provide excellent control. There is a little bit of give to the string but not too much, so that it feels lively but not springy. It's not as crisp as Tour Bite but not as muted as Hyper-G. It feels as comfortable or maybe a bit more so than Hyper-G, Revolution, and Tour Bite.

Rating these characteristics among the four Solinco strings:

Most stiff to least stiff feel: Tour Bite, Hyper-G, Confidential, Revolution
Most muted to least muted: Hyper-G, Confidential, Revolution, Tour Bite
Most crisp to least crisp: Tour Bite, Revolution, Confidential, Hyper-G
Most comfortable to least comfortable: Confidential, Revolution, Hyper-G, Tour Bite

Confidential is not as comfortable as my usual Silver 7 Tour.

Spin:
Spin production is good to very good. Initially when the string was freshly installed and the edges still sharp, it had very good bite on the ball. As the string wore, it seemed the edges on the mains became more rounded and spin capability on the most spinny of shots dropped off a little bit. In this aspect, Confidential behaved like Revolution and Tour Bite. Hyper-G seems to maintain sharper edges on the mains than Confidential, Revolution, or Tour Bite.

Spin capability is not as high as a very sharply edge square string like Ultra Cable or V-Square, and not quite as good as Hyper-G averaged over the life of the string. It does seem to have better bite on the ball than Revolution and Tour Bite. When hitting looping topspin shots with a very skimming contact, Confidential does not grab the ball as well as the highest spin capable strings and it results in a lower launch angle and less forward ball velocity. However, Confidential's sensitivity to incoming ball spin is much less than these highest spin capable strings, and less than with Hyper-G.

Spin capability decreased most noticeably around the four hour mark, when notching became significant and the mains started getting stuck out of position.

Spin capability is slightly greater with my normal Silver 7 Tour, though that may be because I'm using a thinner gauge of that string compared to Confidential.

Durability:
Unfortunately, Confidential is the fastest wearing Solinco string I have experienced. I am at about six hours of play on it and I would not expect it to last another 90 minute session. It has notched 50% or more through the center mains, and the edges of the mains have rounded. Previously, I played a 1.20 gauge Hyper-G for more than ten hours without notching and breaking, and Tour Bite has lasted me 15 hours. Revolution is typically good for about eight hours before breaking. 17 gauge Silver 7 Tour is usually good for about 12 hours before breaking.

Playability duration:
At the six hour mark and with the highly notched mains, Confidential is still very playable as long as I hit more through the ball. Tension loss was less than average and stabilized after the first couple of sessions. It still has that lively feel and still generates good spin. It feels like it would remain playable until it breaks. It has become slightly more harsh in the last couple of hours as the mains have stopped returning to position through a combination of notching and loss of elasticity. The tension loss did not seem to noticeably affect the response of the stringbed as a whole.

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?):
Confidential seems to maintain a very consistent response through the period of initial tension loss and into the period where the tension is fairly stable. I feel like it could be strung 5% looser and still provide very good control but with more comfort, more ball speed, and a higher launch angle that I prefer.

Additional thoughts:
I strung this myself and found the process to be fairly typical. Coil memory was moderate, and elongation when pulling tension was on the low side of average. I cut a one foot section and pulled 50 pounds of tension and let it sit for a minute. Repulling 50 pounds of tension only required a small additional stretch of the string. The 1.25 Confidential added two grams of weight over 17 gauge (1.20) Silver 7 Tour.

I've now tested a few newly released strings that seemed designed for pro player use: RPM Power, Head Experimental, and Confidential. All of these strings rely on the player to generate the highest amounts of spin, but in trade you get excellent and linear control, a more comfortable response, and decent power levels. For a recreational level player who relies on heavy spin, there are other strings that will do better. For a recreational player who tends to hit with more moderate spin, Confidential is an excellent string that provides more spin capability than a round poly, and should feel immediately comfortable and provide very high confidence that the ball will go exactly where the racquet directs it, while also providing consistency of response throughout its lifespan. Confidential is a very good string that has a slightly different mix of characteristics than Hyper-G, Revolution, and Tour Bite, and those four strings should allow any poly user to select a string that suits their playing style, equipment, and preferences.

Thanks to Tennis Warehouse and Solinco for providing the opportunity to test Confidential!

This is one of the most confusing playtest i have read. Low power.. too lively.. monster spin.. for flat hitters.. very comfy.. stiffest string i hit with . o_Oo_Oo_O
Amazing how people experience things so differently.. anyways.. just stringing this thing up today.. big fan of hyper-g.. especially for launch angle and amazing dive/dip aka spin..but could use just a little bit more directional control and less muted. Maybe this will be a good test... thanks for the reviews everyone..

Most of these play testers are really experienced and have been part of our little group for a while. Most of the time it really depends on what they are used to. Many play testers go out of their way to compare the test sample to what they are using or a string that is pretty widely used for comparison. If you read these reviews.. you get a feel for the tester and their games, frames, swing speeds and level. This is a good mix of testers.. sometimes the reviews are not consistent for various reasons. In general, I would trust what you are reading.. but you have to read them closely and between the lines to get the most out the reviews posted. Great job.. everyone! Hope to be back for the next one!

To add to what @SteveI says, I think after a bit you can tell which players will tend to have similar impressions about strings and other equipment, most likely because they play with a similar style and/or use similar racquets/weighting, and what they think of some new string will probably be pretty close to your experience with it also.

I'm also a firmly in the camp that if you can see someone hitting using that string or equipment, it gives you an even better idea if what you're going to experience is likely to be the same based on swing style and racquet head speed. I've posted videos with most of the reviews I've done, both racquets and strings, to give others a clearer idea how similar my game might be to theirs. I did so in this thread in post #44. While I would love to see others also post videos of testing, I understand that's not for everyone.

I'd also agree with @SteveI that the current core group of string playtesters seem to encompass a lot of different styles, skill levels, and equipment, and also are able to write well. There are several people who I realize often share very similar opinions and I try to read all of their posts, but I also know that there is value in everyone's impressions and that often they give me things to think about or challenge why I feel as I do, and that's great too.

Curious what equipment do you use to record ? I would like to record videos but would need some recommendations on camera, mounting devices, and video editing for rookies.

Is there a simple kit that one could purchase that includes all needed equipment?

Thanks much

All of my videos are raw, unedited footage. I don't believe in cherry picking the five best shots I hit in a 90 minute practice, and I believe that seeing me miss and the way I miss is as instructive as any good shot. Some of my videos have come near the end of a three hour day of singles as well - there's no better time to see if equipment really can go the distance with a player as when I'm dog tired.

That being said, I just use my phone, a Samsung Note8. I clamp it in one of those car dash phone holders and sit it on a bench turned on it's side at the end of the court. The phone is around head height to give good perspective over my swingpath and corresponding ball reaction.

I then just upload the video to youtube and publish it. No cost at all anywhere!

Thanks the video editing comment was meant to delete the changeovers during matches. Many folks on here do a great job of posting entire matches without the changeovers and don't cherry pick anything. At 53, completely happy with who I am, I call balls and strikes. Not at all worried that I am rec tennis player who knows his limits just like my review of this string noted.

never thought about using a car mounting clip to hold my phone, but will give it a try. Thanks

I no longer own a ball machine.. sold mine a few years ago. I would love to post video and could get a decent phone to use. My issue might be to have hitting partners agree to have themselves posted on line. You would think it would not be an issue.. but I assure you that not everyone is ok with that. I have a few firm no way and a few maybes. I would love to post video... I will revisit it in the spring.

Solinco Confidential 1.25mm playtest official review!!

  • Tension(s) used for playtest: 48pds
  • Regular string set up & tension: Solinco Hyper G 17g @ 48pds.
  • Racquet used for test: Babolat Pure Aero +
  • Power/Control of test string: This string has good power I would say about a 7 out of 10. I could hit deep and not worry about hitting short and blocking shots was no issue. Control I would give it an 8, drop shots were awesome and had extra spin with this string. After a couple hitting sessions you do get some notching and string does start to round off the edges. But I did not see a lot of string movement so snap back is still great. Slice had a lot of movement after the shot which I loved.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) Compared to my usually string Hyper G, this is a stiffer string than I am used to. Felt crisp on contact and very comfortable to me throughout my hitting sessions. No arm issues or jarring after contact.
  • Spin: This is where I liked it the most, has really good bite for the first 6hrs and is very controlled just like Hyper G. For spin, I have to give it at least an 8.5+. Serving with slice and kick was noticeable as the string does give it some action after contact.
  • Durability: It last pretty well, I think it last a little bit longer than Hyper G with tension maintenance and notching so this is a plus if you want a longer lasting string than Hyper G. I believe the stiffness of the string helps maintain control as Hyper G is softer and cuts into itself quicker. You may have to add a little more wrist after the edges are worn down but the string still preformed like I expected. I liked the feel after the first week and still had no issues with power or spin.
  • Playability Duration: I played about 20hrs with the string and still feels solid. I usually wait to pop string and never cut out unless I’m really not liking the setup. From the looks of it I still have a couple more sessions before breaking.
  • Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?) I strung it as my usual tension 48pds. Since it is stiffer, I would string maybe 2 or 3 pds lower and see if the control would be the same. I have confidence that this string would be great at lowered tensions and provide ample power and control.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional): I have been waiting to try this string out and have not been disappointed. The real question is would I switch? I am not sure it can overtake Hyper G. But I will definitely be using Confidential this year and see if it can win out. This string has a lot of the same attributes I like in Hyper G but with a stiffer setup so I felt right at home with this string. I think this string will be a close 2nd to Hyper G, if I can find a lower tension I like to use with it I can see myself making the switch.
BONUS QUESTION
  • Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not? I would use this grip; it is just like the grips Solinco sells but a thinner version. I like the tackiness of the grip and it is really easy to put on. Does get dirty fast, but no other issues. The wrap over it was really on there. Took me a couple minutes to rip the plastic off but usually Solinco adds a tab so that it is easy to pull off. I am sure since this is a test grip, they did not add the tab.
Overall, I loved the playtest and will be using Confidential down the road along with Hyper G. Thanks to TW and Solinco for the playtest.

Hey @g4driver - apologies for the tone of my first message. I went back and re-read what I wrote and it sounded harsh and accusatory. I didn't mean that and I'll be sure to read before pressing "post reply" in the future.

I also purchased one of those $50 go-pro imitators some time ago. I tried hanging that on the vinyl back wall but it was front heavy and always canted forward so I couldn't get a good shot of the court. It had a wider angle so it was better at covering the whole near side baseline, but worse at actually giving good perspective on the ball flight. Something in between would be nice. Probably time to spring for a real go-pro!

I think the only hitting videos are with my son, who doesn't mind. My other hitting partners are the same way - and so I'm careful to make sure I'm not putting them on the spot in any way by asking.

Two of the three ball machine courts at our club are in the "training" building where the pros teach. I was on a ball machine one time and overheard a player watch themselves on video for I think the first time ever and they were **loudly** complaining to the pro that there was no way they looked like that.

I'm most curious how Confidential compares to Tour Bite. I'm hoping a playtester can string both up and compare.
Or if @TW Staff wants .. I could give the full comparison. Just need a set of Confidential!;):D

I've used several gauges of Tour Bite over the past year and compared to Confidential, Tour Bite is more crisp and less powerful, with a bit less spin capability and less comfort. Tour Bite does seem to last longer and control is better just due to the lower power levels. Both Confidential and Tour Bite seem to lose their edges and spin capability decreases after a few to several hours.

Tension(s) used for playtest - 54 lbs
Regular string set up & tension - Dunlop Black Widow 16g at 53 lbs.
Racquet used for test - Wilson Clash tour 100

- I actually really like the grip and I would probably use it because it is a great switch up from my tourna grip when the weather is colder.

Plagiarism should be a crime....just saying.

Tension(s) used for playtest - 54 lbs
Regular string set up & tension - Dunlop Black Widow 16g at 53 lbs.
Racquet used for test - Wilson Clash tour 100
Power/Control of test string - The power of the string is very comparable to the Dunlop Black Widow and in my opinion played very similar. The plush flex of the strings gave me a little extra power while not losing any control. I would say that I did not enjoy the control of the racket that much because it felt a bit erratic at times but that also may have been my game and not the strings fault.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? The feel of the strings were very lively and it gave me a great sensation when hitting the ball. I personally like slightly stiffer strings when I play with my clash because it feels more balanced in my opinion. I think it also felt really crisp especially from the baseline and when I was engaging in long rallies.
Comfortable?) - I would say that the strings were not as comfortable as I would have liked. I personally like a more responsive string and I just didn't get that from this racket. If I strung the racket at a slightly lower tension than it might fix this problem for me.
Spin - I would say that this string has very similar amounts of spin as the Dunlop Black Widow. I really enjoy this aspect of the string and wish more strings in the market do this. I think when I was actually pleasantly surprised given my racket being 100 inches with 16 x 19 string pattern making the boxes relatively larger than other rackets on the market.
Durability - The durability of this racket has been great because I usually break strings every week but this string took two weeks to break. I personally play everyday for about 2 hours.
Playability Duration - Even though the durability was great on this racket, I really did not like the playablitlty duration. I felt that it lost its charm within the first few days. I kept playing with the strings because I personally hate cutting strings when they are not snapped, so I just kept playing with it until it snapped.
Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?) - Next time I might string slightly lower because I do think that it might help with the overall feel and also comfortablility.
List any additional thoughts (optional) -

BONUS QUESTION
Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not? - I actually really like the grip and I would probably use it because it is a great switch up from my tourna grip when the weather is colder.

Thank you to the @TW Staff and Solinco for this play test.

Solinco Confidential 2.0 (16Lg - measured with calipers at 1.25mm)

Tension(s) used for playtest

23.5M/23.5X in kg (~52M/52X in lb)

Regular string set up
All 1.25mm in the 22kg +/-1 (48lb) range with Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution, Tourna Black Zone

Racquet used for test
Dunlop Aerogel 4D 200 Tour (16x18) weighted to 365gm (12.9oz), balance 305mm (12 HL)

Overall Rating of test string
8
I would definitely try out this string a few more times (in 1.25mm or 1.20mm) if only to convince myself that I am missing out on something. I found the string bed response to be predictable during my play test (10 hours). For the time being, I will be sticking with the round co-polys that have been providing consistent results for me.

Power/Control of test string
8
With some modulation of the reference tension used I feel there is access to ample power for most players. The spin factor is about average (for a shaped string), but the spin/power combination allows for very good control overall. I speculate that perhaps some of this is derived from the string’s other (internal/ material) make up?

Feel (Comfortable? Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? etc.,)
7
I found the string was balanced/comfortable and toward the crisp end of the spectrum. Nothing exceptional in this regard because it did feel harsh once in a while when timing was off/eye off the ball.

Spin
8
I play with round, smooth co-polys for predictability relative to a full bed of shaped string. For a shaped string, there was an average amount of spin on demand based on swing path and racquet head speed.

There were times when I felt I needed an adjustment on my backhand while using my usual swing and racquet plane to ball path angle. I was a bit uncomfortable with the level of adjustment needed on delicate backhand slices and drop volleys. HOWEVER, as a seasoned player, I accept that a commitment to any full bed of shaped string as a regular set up may require some stroke adjustment.

Durability
8
I am not a string breaker and SC2.0 would outlast its playability in my racquet. There was evidence of denting normal for most co-polys

Playability Duration
8
The playability duration during the ten hours was excellent – but it was all doubles. No takers for singles in cold weather.
This had sufficient life in it for a few more hours, but i had to move on. Generally, on a play test, I get at least half as many hours of singles, but not this time.

Tension findings (if you installed this string again, would you select the same tension? Explain answer.)
No drastic change in reference tension - I believe a slight increase would be warranted in really hot weather. I will attribute the slight amount of wrist discomfort to colder weather/insufficient warm up/tug-o'-war with big dog.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
Nothing yet... but will reserve this space for any edits.

Solinco Overgrip (White)
Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not?
The over grip was fine in regard to tackiness and durability but it did not appear to be remarkably different from many other offerings in either regard.

Would I use it again? Yes, but I much prefer a black OG.

Tension(s) used for playtest - 53 lbs

Regular string set up & tension - Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution or Hyper-G 17 at 53 lbs.

Racquet used for test - Babolat Pure Strike Tour (2019 version)

Power/Control of test string - Power level felt quite low compared to what I'm used to with Hyper-G or any other strings. Most of my balls were landing quite short and weren't penetrating the court well either.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Felt extremely stiff to me, definitely not as soft as the other strings I've been using a lot lately (Pro Line Evolution, Cyclone, Head Lynx, Hyper-G, etc). Strings also felt quite dead to me and didn't have much of a lively or responsive feel.

Comfortable?) - As stiff as the strings felt to me they still felt comfortable for the most part. Just not as comfortable as the other poly's I typically like to play with.

Spin - Just from looking at the string you can see that it has a shaped profile but I didn't get great spin out of it. Compared to Hyper-G, the Confidential's the launch angle was a lot lower which resulted in a lot of my shots landing short when they would normally land deeper with a similar swing. Consequently I struggled a lot with either hitting balls into the net or short balls that landed in my opponent's hitting zone.

Durability - Can't provide feedback for durability seeing as I cut it out after about 7 hours of play. I just wasn't enjoying the string and didn't see it getting any better for me so I decided to switch it out. Usually my crosses will start thinning out after a while but the string did seem to be pretty durable given the time I played with it.

Playability Duration - Can't comment too much since I cut the string as I mentioned above. Usually I can play with most poly strings right up until the point when they look like they're about to break but I lost interest in this string quite a bit before

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?) - I would drop the tension at least 3 lbs seeing as I couldn't get adequate power from the string.

List any additional thoughts (optional) - I can see the appeal in this string for many people but it just wasn't for me. Assuming it's the same price as Hyper-G I'd take Hyper-G 10 times out of 10. Regardless, big thanks to Solinco and TW for the opportunity.

BONUS QUESTION
Would you use the included overgrip? Why/why not? - Solid overgrip, I typically use Wilson Pro Overgrip but wouldn't mind this one either. In order for me to switch to this overgrip, It would have to be cheaper or similary priced to Wilson and they definitely need to make it easier to take off the plastic as others have mentioned.

Thanks, I have been using Hyper G for a couple years now and it is my preferred string choice. I occasionally use Tour Bite but sometimes it's too stiff and I feel it goes dead fast. Confidential has a great blend and I think I could string at an even lower tension and feel the same attributes as Hyper G. This year I'm going to test both side to side. I don't think you can go wrong trying this string out.

I noticed on the TW video review, Troy briefly mentioned a degree of the “metallic” feel that may be similar to Alu power and I’m wondering if the play testers on this thread felt this as well? I would think this is one of the hallmark characteristics of alu power and anyone who has used alu power before would immediately recognize this. But I haven’t noticed any significant mention of this in the reviews so far except one from the previous page .

I have not hit with Alu power in quite a while. Have not felt a "metallic" similarity. I can say I have noticed string movement similar to an Alu when it is close to breaking. That would be my only comparison. But again, it has been a while since hitting with that particular string.

Initially I felt/heard an annoying 'ping' that I sometimes associate w/ a 'metallic' feel. That may be what he was referring to?

Yeah that's probably what it is. I'll have to try and see for myself too, looks like this is something I would like.

Solinco Confidential 1.25 Review

Tension(s) used for playtest:
48lbs w/ a 10% prestretch using a WISE 2086

Regular string set up & tension: Laserfibre Native Tour 1.25mm @ 50lbs

Racquet used for test: Yonex VCORE 98 +

Power/Control of test string:
From the first hit I felt this was on the lower side of the power spectrum. When playtesting string, I warm up w/ my normal setup, then switch to the new string. Granted, Native Tour is one of the more powerful polys, but my first 5 minutes of hitting I was struggling to get the ball consistently past the service line. That could have been due to the increased spin, but I it seemed as though the ball was also traveling slower across the net. There was also an annoying 'ping' sound coming from the stringbed (which eventually went away after the first hour of hitting).
To paraphrase Uncle Ben, 'with low power comes great control'...and as one might expect I had no problems keeping the ball in the court. Knowing it would have to swing extremely hard to hit it out, I was able to focus on angles, moving the ball side-to-side. The added spin also helped dip a few passing shots. Unfortunately, at 5' 9", I can't give up any power on my serve, and it showed using this string, especially on the 2nd serve. My opponent would routinely step around & bludgeon a forehand no matter how hard I tried to kick him out wide.
Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?):
This was kind of a 'Jekyl & Hyde' string for me as far as feel went. Initially I felt this was an extremely stiff string with barely any feel. I also felt a slight twinge in my arm after the first session (which scared me a bit given I had a bad bout of TE 2 years ago), but it never amounted to anything, so I don't think the string had anything to do with it. But after the 2nd hour it softened up a bit. Yes, it was still on the stiff side, not nearly as jarring as my initial 5-10 minutes. The 'ping' also went away somewhere between hour 1 & 2.

Spin:
My strokes are quite flat, so the phrase 'increased spin' should be taken w/ a huge grain of salt. However, I did notice on a few passing shots that the ball dipped a little more than usual. 2nd serves may have had more RPMs, but combined with the low power, it just resulted in me teeing it up for my opponent. I'm guessing I just don't have the racquet head speed required to benefit from a string like this.

Durability:
Don't ask me...I can't remember the last time I broke a string, especially full poly...

Playability Duration:
After 8 hours its still playing well. In fact, I like it better now than the first hour. For me, this may be the first string that requires a 'break in' period. The readings below represent the tension right off the machine, after the 1st hit (1 set), and at the 8 hour mark. It appears as though the majority of the drop happens in the first hour, which may explain why I felt it needed a 'break in' period:

49473615416_198940c2dc_w.jpg
49473835172_3dae626d7c_w.jpg

Tension Recommendations (would you string it differently next time - why?):
After reading a few reviews, I decided to go with 48lbs, but if I had to do it again, I'd drop it to 45lbs and see if I could avoid the 'break in' period. Obviously, it might affect playability down the line, but it would be worth a try to see if I could get more power out of it.

List any additional thoughts (optional):
I think this string is better suited to the younger power hitter, or someone looking to tame a powerful frame. It requires a full swing with a high racquet head speed, and likely a western or semi-western grip, to really unlock its potential.
Also, after my previous playtest (RPM Power), I decided to start weighing the frame strung. My frame felt a tad sluggish w/ the RPM, so I weighed it before cutting it out, and after putting in the Confidential:
49473615476_7342f13030_w.jpg
49473129268_c4385f0fe8_w.jpg
You can see that Confidential (on the right) is 2g lighter, which was welcome w/ my aging shoulder. Sure, 2g might not seem like that much, but distributed across the stringbed in a '+' frame, there was definitely a difference.

BONUS QUESTION

Would you use the included overgrip?
I really liked the feel of the overgrip. Soft, slightly tacky, but not overly tacky. I was a Supergrap user until switching to the Tecnifibre Pro Contact (from this summer's playtest), and I think this overgrip would perform well in the summer heat (I sweat a lot). But, until they fix the plastic covering so its easier to remove, there's no way I could use it (no joke...it took me 5 minutes to take it off, and I had to wear my reading glasses so I could find a spot to peel from).
As always, thanks to TW and Solinco for the opportunity to participate in this playtest.

Great stuff!!
