Tennis Warehouse playtest: Solinco MACH-10

String maintenance update for everyone

Strung my 305s with 16L on Thursday 5/8 and came off the stringer at 55#, next morning rechecked and it was sitting at 52# (to be expected)

After an hour lesson and 2 sets of doubles it was still sitting at 52# on Friday 5/9

Played another 2 sets on Monday 5/12 and rechecked it again this morning 5/13 and it is sitting at 49#……all tension checked with an ert300

There will never be one string to rule them all but this one ticked off many boxes...I think it mostly came down to feel or control (since it packs the most power out of the solinco strings) for those who didn't like it
I always crossed the M10 with Hyper G round, and that solved the control issue- no unpredictability unless I really dropped tension- just starting to see a few issues now at 46/44, but going back to 46/46 should solve everything.

Another 2 hours in wiht Mach 10 yesterday. definitely not as spinny as RPM blast but i had no issues making topspin on my serves, and my kick serves had more penetration as well. Pleasent surprise was on the slice backhand, My backhand slice had alot more penetration,, i think its cause its hit more flatter than before ,, i had bit of a issue with too much spin on my backhand but with this string , it comes off bit flatter sold of like Rosewall slice backhand with alot more penetration.. I'm finding out that Mach 10 has tremendous tension stability and playability duration. Solinco has just developed a totally new type of string that many other manufacturers will try to duplicate.

what if the string still plays and feels good at hour 12 and has a few more hours of life left? assuming that it actually still retains all the qualities you need to play good tennis in that last stretch. Usually I agree with you in that we all know what awaits if you push the limit too far with poly, but if a new bar was set I think we have to try and push it (at least once or twice) to see what that new limit is, you may be leaving money on the table if you dont
For my kid, he is going about a week (roughly 15 hours off season) and then chopping it out and going fresh with his M10/confidential hybrid, he has a problematic shoulder he plays it safe with. Just one player’s perspective.

I'm also stringing my extreme pro with confidential 1.25, 50/48 and the control i am getting right off the stringing machine is unmatched for a good 6 hours.

Anyways, followed Peyote's idea, i tried mach10 in the mains and confidential in the crosses both 1.25 50/48, (because i have a reel of confi and someone's already tried it and wished for similar performance with just a bit more power)
and after about 40 min, there was already (severe) notching on mach 10. Seems confi's edges dug into mach's very quickly, (too quickly!). It just feels as if confi as a string is much more substantial.
Would love to hear other people's thoughts on shaped string cross with mach 10.

The feeling was absolutely lovely though, cloudy soft with good pop and good control. I just got a feeling these 2 strings arent hybrid compatible.
I would post a pic, if it would be possible from my phone gallery.

I am now trying confi in the mains, mach crosses, since i have 6m of mach left. Hope for a different result.
And afterwards since i have another set left will try full bed of mach (def strung tighter), but since confi is everything my extreme pro needs to be tamed with pinpoint precision, its unlikely i will switch.

Will update later on.

All the best,
L.

Curious how it goes with the M10 in the crosses. We havent tried that yet.

I think it's ok for the mains to notch, since they are sliding back and forth every time you hit. Notched mains should not prevent you from getting spin.
That said, now I'm gonna try Confidential 1.25 in my Extreme pro also. :)

Fair point, but just wanted to point out severity of confi's vs mach's material difference, which is probably a duuh moment for many.

I played a whole 2 hour match today with confi fullbed and strings still move unobstructed.

In any case i am still very excited to try fullbed of mach.

All the best,l

Full bed of Mach10 plays very plush in the EP. I had it strung at 50 and it felt tight for the first hour, next time I might drop to 48. Really good control for the how soft it feels, great pocketing, nice grab, low-mid launch angle. I am still on the fence whether I like this longer dwell time more than something crisp like Lynx Tour, but it's worth a try.

has anyone strung this at higher tensions like 55-58 lbs range ? Just trying to see how it performs at those tensions ? with hot summer conditions coming up and this being fairly powerful poly, i am thinking i would have to string this bit higher tension and am bit worried about it, because some polys perform really well at those tensions but some don't

Mach-10 is not powerful. At same/+2 lbs over Confidential I found them comparable. It "feels" softer and different but the ball is not really faster.

I think you will be very disappointed at a high tension and loose power and spin and even more feel. And it doesn't seem to drop tension quick either so you will stuck in the "bad zone" which in most strings including Tour Bite it will drop out off.

That said give it a shot... :-D

I pretty much agree with this. Although I do think it's definitely a little bit more powerful than Confidential and Tour Bite. It's really not as powerful as many people are saying. It's soft plush feel just gives you the sensation of lots of power. It would be horrendous in any frame strung in the mid to high 50's. Don't even attempt it.

I'm currently testing TB 115, HGS 115 and M10 115 in my Pure Strike...

currently I would say HGS is giving me the most pleasant experience and balance between control / power / and comfort...

Also waint for the pink Confidential Soft that could be a good match with this frame

How would you compare power level capabilities between HGS and M10?

We’e only gone as high as 54.5, both full bed and in hybrid, and it perform(s/ed) admirably in AZ desert heat into low 100s (haven't tested it above 110 yet). Dunno why it would perform less so in humid heat.

I would say power level is pretty similar, with maybe an hedge for HGS

One thing I noticed is while I use HGS in 115 or 120 depending on the frame and feel is pretty much the same, for M10 I noticed quite a difference between gauges... 125 is damn stiff, I would say Confidential like... 120 is softer and 115 a bit launchy...

yes it's pretty mich what you would expect but the difference between gauges is significantly more pronounced with M10

Anybody noticed that?

I am not recommending a specific tension

100F+ changes things to the tune of 2-3 lbs at least.... And you might be using a lockout machine which is also worth 2-3lbs.. Plus I dont even know the racket. And the biggest factor is FAMILIARITY and your son is used to that.

I would suggest to stay at or around the same tension for HyperG or Confidential in those same frames and not get distracted by the people who think Mach-10 is too powerful.

Ye likewise, the power level from some people seems to be over exaggerated. For me it has equal power to Tecnifibre Razor Soft White if that helps anyone as a reference point.

Using a Gamma XLT, hybrid M10 16L mains @54.5 and Confidential 17 crosses @52.5. Yeah, a bit of tension loss is inevitable, but this combo has been pretty decent for tension maintenance beyond the initial 2 or 3 lbs drop post/ stringing, even in heat. He is using WO V2 frames, virgin except for leather grips.

To add to the above, he has used that hybrid at the tensions listed for ariund 12 string jobs so far, and ut very happy with it. He cuts is out after about a week regardless of whether it feels bagged out, and it generally hasn’t. Just a safety first thing. As a main, the M10 is the dominant feel, and as I belueve Nostradomus said, the feel of M10 is very addictive. My kid has historically preferred crisper feeling strings, but the M10 feels so good he doesn't really care if its not the crispiest feeling in the world, and it is easier on his joints and has a bit more comfortably easy power than full bed Confidential 17, But the easier power is very controllable, especially with the Confidential in the crosses. Full bed Conf 17 was the previous setup at 53 lbs. M10 16L was the goldilocks gauge for him and he would likely be happy doing full bed of it, but the Conf crosses is kind of a security blanket, and it hasn't sawed through the M10, at least for him.

I tried M10 1.15 and the mains stopped snapping back within the first 15-30 mins of play. While this didn’t negatively affect playability initially, by the second hour, the strings had completely bagged out.

1.25 is great. Not stiff at all.

Agreed. We noticed a wide difference between gauges. Tried 120, 125, and 130. 125 was perfect for him, but 120 wasn't nearly enough, and 130 was way too much. Never seen that much disparity between gauges at the same tension.

Such statements end up revealing more about the limits of player ability more than anything else to be honest.

What wrong with you? Have you tried the 3 gauges? Have you try defferent gauges of other Solinco strings? Or are you just looking for attention?

I too struggle with different gauges of stiffer strings on my Ezone98

At reference tension (-/+2 lbs to adjust +/- for gauge) for example - Tour Bite 18 is too soft, Tour Bite 17 is perfect, Tour Bite 16L is prison wire (all 3 gauges tried)

Confidential 17 is slightly too soft, Confidential 16L is just perfect to slightly tight - I used a soft cross to adjust. (2 gauges tried)

So using the same logic - I would say Tour Bite 17 to Tour Bite 16L STIFFNESS ramps up is way higher than Mach 10 17 to Mach 10 16L ramp up. (2 gauges tried in Mach 10)

My statements above talk my own limitations and not special adjustments in gauges... since they just extrude same material in different gauges.

I just report my observations from my own experience and perspective, as we all do here. If that makes me limited, then I accept that assessment.

I apologize if that sounded like a diss.. we are all limited in some way.

If going up in gauge suddenly feel too stiff then there is a reason for it (player) since the amount of string material resisting the ball increases by the square of the difference in gauge AND it is kinda like bench press - The last 5 pound might feel heavier than the previous 100 when the limit is reached.

So played X may not hit his limit till 1.30mm.. I may not hit mine till 1.25 for most strings.. someone else will be at 1.15

Yeah yeah we can all drop tension to adjust but I believe then we cannot use the string optimally, or maybe im wrong there.

You aren't wrong, it was just kinda weird in my son’s case that 120 @ 53 was way too wild, 125 @ 54.5 was perfect, and 130 @ 50 was just way too much string. Just his personal experience. But, like you, I would have thought that 130 @ 4.5 lbs less than the 125 would gave been more playable. But we didnt drop below 50, so that may have been the ticket for 130.

anyone try the 18 Gauge Mach 10 ? bit afraid it might be hard control due to increase in trampoline effect of such thin poly. but i am thinking spin potential must be great ?

Not a fan of the 18g- just didn't feel right for some reason. I wasn't overly impressed with spin on the 18 either, but that may be due to be being less aggressive with my strokes because of the tendency for it to fly on me.

Gonna find out soon how much environmental factors play into satisfaction with this string, the kid is driving from 100 degrees to roughly 65 on a daily basis for the next couple of months.

Yeah. We're supposed to get 109 this Saturday. Just north of Sacramento. This morning it's only 59 but going up to 92 so we're on our way to summer already. Lol! It should be a good chance to test the Mach 10 / Hyper G round BD 1.20 which we're currently doing in the other thread / playtest!

Is the flavor of the week over now or are people still enjoying this string? At first I really liked this string, then I suffered a patella tendon injury which kept me off court for 4 weeks. I just came back last night to do some light hitting. I grabbed the racket that I had strung with Mach 10. I hit with it once before my injury. Then it sat in my bag for the past 4 weeks. I was wondering if it held up or not. Well evidently it didn't. It was spraying balls everywhere and agrivated my tricep tendonitis. Definitely bagged out. I guess this is not too surprising though. I'll tear it out and get a fresh bed in there and hit again in a couple of days to see if I still think it's as good as I once did.
