Tennis Warehouse playtest: Volkl V-Square 1.25 (new colors)

Up to almost 8 hours on V-square and Ultra Cable.
Played last night after a 5 day break and played again this morning, all doubles.

V-square feels like its starting to lose some snapback and isn't gripping the ball as well. Especially this morning, I found myself launching some balls and not getting quite as much bite.
String still feels great, I'm still blown away at how "comfortable" it feels. Especially compared to Ultra Cable which is a little cheap, stiffer, and plastic feeling.
I can also feel the springyness and power rising a bit in V-square.
Notching is close to 50%
The string remains very playable but my shots don't have the same shape and are coming off a bit different.

Ultra Cable is barely notched, it is such a thick string. It seems like it's feeling a little stiffer each time I use it. It was never soft but felt a little smoother at the start. It's been awhile since I used fullbed UC but I believe it gets harsh as it dies, it definitely can turn into a trampoline. But despite the trampoline, it still bites really well. Take some good full swings and it still gives you tons of spin.

I'm still favoring V-square and excited that I have another set to try some hybrids with. I'm trying to cook up the perfect cross.

I mentioned before that I really enjoyed the OG V-Square crossed with YPTF when it was first released, and it really improved all the negatives that I experienced with it in FB, particularly reducing the level of notching. That said, there is now a plethora of arguably better slick round polys to choose from, so I'm sure something like ReString Sync or Wasabi X will make a better cross than what YPTF did. Maybe I should re-visit this myself...

I've been using the Lava V square since it first came out with YPTF and it's my go to poly set up, esp for faster courts. I also with Gosen G-Tour 3 as well, as it has a bit more plush feel.

Finally got to hit with it last night. Played for 2 hours.

Then went to work on serves today over lunch.

I'm not sure if I'm off, or if this is taking me a bit to adjust. Without spoiling my review, which will require more playtime before I can compose, I'm thinking that I should have gone with a higher tension.

Enjoyed three more sessions with this string; two were "feel good" hitting sessions at lunchtime with the ball machine and then last night with two sets of doubles and then a 10pt tie breaker and and a 7 point singles TB (getting some friends ready for an upcoming tournament). Weather this week was between 70 an 80 so much cooler.

Tension loss so far: strung on 5/8/25 @ 52 now today 5/16/25 @ 43. Seems to have settled in around 43 for past few days. Even with the substantial tension loss over this short timeframe; I've adjusted to it now. This seems like an expected, "natural" evolution for this string and a phenomenon that if you play with it; you're simply going to have live with; it's already documented in the TW database. On the plus side, the spin potential is still there. It is still somewhat playable.

I'm seeing above average notching (for a ordinary string bed in this timeframe) and the string bed is starting to lock up. But this isn't really a normal string bed when you think about it; it's an extreme string design for extreme spin; as we know; its a 4 sided string with sharp edge on top of sharp edge so the wear is going to extreme as well; coupled with the string's chemistry and it's tension loss; it's just something you have to manage or you have to manage your expectations or what you're trying to get out of the playability.

I'm deciding on how far I want to go with this string at this point; what is its usable lifespan for me? The positive side of playing last night was serving well with this string and got some positive feedback from our opponents on serves in particular. The string performed well in the doubles sets on slice, topspin and volleys; there were not issues whatsoever. It didn't have the same playability as in the beginning; it may have lost some elasticity at this point; maybe this was good because one of the players was quite a hard hitter so the deader string probably helped in this case (if that makes any sense) despite the tension loss which kind of seems contradictory to me; hard to explain it.

So yeah I'm probably going to hit with this for another week; I may have my review done by this weekend though because I've definitely got a more solid and complete understanding of where this string fits for me and how to use it in the future.

Well said. I wonder if it's a good or bad thing if we can articulate what we want to get out of our equipment. Knowledge is power but ignorance will definitely save us more $$$...haha.

My review of Volkl V-Square 1.25
  • Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
Been around tennis my whole life, but have never played leagues or tournaments, always recreational and mostly doubles as I learned to play (and still do) with my dad as a partner (he's now 75 and I'm 40) and like to think I have good technique and sound strokes, I still lack the footwork and preparation from upper tier athletes.
  • Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
Before this I was playing with PP Eruption 1.18 at 21.5k
  • What racquet did you use for this playtest?
Wilson Ultra Tour 18x20
  • What color(s) did you test?
Black
  • Tension(s) used for playtest?
21k (46lbs)
  • Power/Control of test string?
Power is average with the string, I would not consider this as a type of string that gives you back energy into the shot but thru out the testing it never felt dead or unresponsive. Control was good in the sense that the string bed played very consistent and I was able to repeat shots without any erratic outcome.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
Firm, without it being "dead" it definitely has a stiffer feel and it stretches very little during the pulls when stringing. The string however is not uncomfortable, you must like a firm response from the string and let the pocketing come from the tension you like.
  • Spin?
Massive and probably the best trait of the string, the movement and shape on the ball was much more than previous string jobs on this frame and while I have tried other sharp and extreme shapes, the combination of more spin and yet still have a predictable behavior that you can trust makes this string something to try.
  • Durability & playability duration?
I put more than 12 hours of cooperative hitting sessions, a few sets of doubles and 1 singles and thru it all it remain playable and consistent thru the game. Notching was a little more noticeable than the wear I cause on other strings, I would expect someone with a bigger swing and that plays more competitive will have a shorter lifespan but I was happy with the durability and playability of the string.
  • Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
I could have gone 1lb lower down to 45lbs considering it is in a 97" 18x20, just to have a little more pocketing on the 1st outing because there is a little bit of a break in period until it settles, but overall I like the tension used.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional)
The string is very sharp, so much so my dad (who strung it) sliced open his index finger when he was pulling the knot and the string slipped. It is really blade like sharp and the cut was deep. Be careful when handling the string and particularly when pulling it.

There was a lot of string movement particularly as the string bed settled in, even the crosses would shift out of place, but eventually they return to their place and I was not touching them thru out the test, maybe it has to do with friction and the coatings or I don't know, but there were moments where it looked like the string had moved all around and by the end of the hitting sessions the string bed was looking pretty straight.

Thank you TW & Volkl for the opportunity to be part of the test, I really enjoyed this string!

  • 10 yrs of tennis/ ~4.0 usta / aggressive baseliner in singles & more proactive with volleying in doubles. Servebot as well.
  • Yellow v-square in Pure aero 98 @ 55lbs
  • 8.5/10 in both power & control; I was able to tame the launch of the pure aero 98 with this string which definitely made me happy. Now, I am able to flatten my shot trajectory with access to heavy topspin. Consistency with the wildness of the pure aero 98 became an option with the help of v-square.
  • Firm yet comfortable at 55lbs. I think the string is slightly muted which I felt was comfortable. Feel was pretty good too. Slightly above average but it’s no multi/natural gut.
  • Spin was wonderful 9/10; able to kick serve approximately +6 feet probably even 7 feet in the air.
  • +6 hours of playtesting and no notching so far. Strings have begun to move a little starting around the 6 hour mark of playtest
  • I was happy with 55lbs, keep the stringbed feeling tight and control. Might want to experience what it feels like at: 45, 50, 52, 58, & 60 lbs
  • I was pleasantly surprised with this string. I’ve tried ultra cable and wasabi (both are square shaped strings) and I think this sits somewhere in between them. Yellow v-square had the BITE similar to ultra cable. One thing that separates these two is the ability to flatten a shot to which V-square does very well. With wasabi, it matches the spin/comfort for the first few hours. This is where v-square beats wasabi as once wasabi begins to loose tension, it starts to spray shots and hurt my arm. V-square on the other hand, still going strong with spin and comfort, strings are starting to misalign but it’s a minor detail for its performance so far.
    • Versatility: v-square [>] ultra cable/wasabi
    • Durability: v-square [>] ultra cable/wasabi
    • Spin: v-square [=] ultra cable/ wasabi
    • Comfort: v-square [>] ultra cable ; [ > ] wasabi
    • Feel: v-square [>] ultra cable ; [=] wasabi

I had a session where I absolutely loved these. This really makes me wonder if it was just me, or if the strings needed a good break-in period.

I'm honestly thinking it was just me, as I know I was playing better tennis on the last outing.

Everything I wanted to do, I was able to do with ease. Lots of top and back spin. Good serve velocity. Return of serve felt smooth. I lost 3 games in a match against a player who is rated higher than I am.

Got just over 11 hrs now, winding down, strings are pretty notched and fairly loose.

I've actually gotten used to how they play, tension loss was pretty linear but occasionally it'll launch a ball.
Spin is still pretty good which I attribute to the sharp sides more than snapback.

Finalizing my thoughts for the review but overall pretty positive experience. I hold a slight prejudice against shaped strings but v-square may have won me over.

Stay tuned for the review..!

I tend to agree with this statement so far- as long as the side stay sharp, it plays well. I'm struggling a bit with launchiness, but that could just be my form. Just recovering from injury for the moment, so the change in form could be the cause for my issues. I'll switch back to my usual setup and see how it compares.

No I agree, it can launch on me too but not as erratic for me as some other strings.
Ultra Cable was more erratic in terms of sometimes it felt dead and others it was a slingshot.

I am about 10 / 11 hours in and I this is a good string, especially if you need a ton of spin. Not very powerful, but has a just enough and control is no issue at all. It is comfortable enough and does everything well enough, but somehow for me something is missing. I can't quite put my finger on it. The more I play with it the more I am liking it so that has been very positive. I hit well with it and it does everything well...enough, but for some reason I am not quite connecting with it.
I could easily recommend this to any number of players I know - and have. It is a good all around string with more than excellent spin potential and checks a lot of positive boxes so I think most poly players will really enjoy it.

When I string it again I'll try it as a hybrid with V-Square in the mains and a standard round poly in the crosses. I think it will shine in a set up like that. Right now it's good, but I think it could be great.

Absolutely agree, I was considering PL Evolution or TP GW as a cross to bring more power and soften the string bed at little. I may try this with the 2nd set that was sent.

Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
Starting with group lessons at the age of 11-12 for about a year or so, followed by high school tennis, and been playing consistently since May 2022. I regularly hit with 4.0-4.5 players, primarily on clay (har-tru). I’d describe my style as 70/30 split between aggressive baseliner and all-court.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
GoldenSet SnakeBite 1.25 @ 48–50 lbs on mains and Tru Pro Ghostwire 1.22 @ 50 lbs on crosses.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?
2023 Head Gravity Pro

What color(s) did you test?
Yellow on mains and black on crosses.

Tension(s) used for playtest?
50 lbs

Power/Control of test string:
This setup delivered plenty of power—even at 50 lbs, I was getting easy depth on my shots. However, the launch angle was unpredictable, likely due to the square shape of the strings. This is a good example of a string offering high power but compromised control. Directional control was solid, but overall control suffered on off-center hits.

Power: 7/10
Control: 3/10

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
The stringbed felt crisp and slightly stiff. Clean shots felt solid. Dampener ON.

Feel: 7.5/10

Spin?
This setup was a spin machine. I could easily modulate the amount of spin on my shots. On clean, topspin-heavy strokes, the ball bite was exceptional, producing heavy balls—especially on forehands. Easily one of my top 3 spin setups I’ve played with. Slices felt great and stayed low with tons of side spin.

Spin: 9/10

Durability & playability duration?
Playability was about average for a poly. Definitely better than my previous playtest with Lynx Spin 2 rPET. After 7–8 hours, the string was still playable, though tension had dropped enough that it felt about time to cut it out.

Playability Duration: 6/10

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
I’d probably string it 2 lbs higher—at 52 lbs—for a bit more control.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
There was a lot of string movement and minimal snap-back, which is expected with square-shaped strings on both mains and crosses. I frequently had to reposition the strings.

I think this setup would benefit from using a round poly on the crosses. The string edges are extremely sharp—sharp enough to cut yourself if not careful. I can also see this string wearing out grommets faster than usual.

Thank you Tennis Warehouse @TW Staff and Volkl for this playtest!

Volkl V-Square

Tennis experience/background: Playing tennis off and on for 50+ years. Started at 10 in 1972. Played Jr. High, High School tennis teams. Played USTA singles, doubles, mixed. Currently USTA 4.0. Love the game. I am a stringer for friends, club players and the local high school team.

Playing style: all court, I play with spin; semi-western forehand, slice and topspin 1hbh. Always looking to move forward when possible and finish at the net.

Racquet used: Dunlop 300 SX (2021) Tension used in playtest 52 lbs.

Full bed Volkl V-Square Yellow.

Previous string
setup in this frame was Full Bed Mach 10 at 50 lbs.

Power 7/10 – power is good; some of ball pocketing and launch. You’ll find enough power on serve as well. You get what you put in and will be rewarded.

Control 8/10 – this string really is asking me to commit to topspin for control off both sides. Slice was excellent. Serve placement was good. If you like to hit out committed to spin this string will reward you. Control through spin is what you’re looking for.

Feel 7/10 – performed well on touch shots around the net and with volleys. This got better as the string “aged” and lost tension. It felt somewhat crisp at first but I wouldn’t say the string was stiff. It hit quite comfortably.

Spin 10/10 – committing to hitting with heavy topspin is rewarded; it almost demands it but it really isn’t an overly demanding string. With this “spin friendly” frame and this super spin friendly string; it’s all about having fun, hitting out with lots of topspin. Spin serves were the best ever with this one with good placement. Also had excellent success with slice on BH and FH. Can't image a better string for spin, perfect score.

Playability Duration 6/10 – started notching fairly quickly, there was a slight break-in period, maybe an hour, you can feel some playabiltiy change after the first few hours. It’s noticeable and measureable with the Tennis Tension app. Strings also started moving a bit probably due to the open string pattern on this frame as well as the square shaped; edge on edge. There are no arm issues whatsoever. It’s not completely unplayable even after it dropped after the first few sessions from 52 to 46 and below.

If you want to use this as a short-term “game day” string it would make sense. It’s best fresh off the stringer; so I can see the need for the match or tournament player to restring this one more often due to tension loss in an effort to maintain playability and consistency. I could definitely see someone restringing this once to twice a month.

Tension recommendations Strung at 52 and this seemed ok. I’m glad I strung it above 50 because the tension drop off is pretty quick and steep.

Additional thoughts: This string seems to wear fairly quickly in a full bed probably due to the square edge-on-edge sawing action.

Next time around I will definitely hybrid this with ISO Speed Baseline Spin (round) or maybe P6 in the crosses for two reasons: durability / longevity and also to see if there is additional spin and consistency.

This string has its “wow” factor due to the incredible spin potential. It’s a lot of fun to hit with this one in a spin frame especially. I also learned a lot about tension loss / playability using this string. I was worried about this at first thinking it was only going to last a week; but as playing conditions changed to cooler weather and wind; the added power from the tension loss kind of played in favor of keeping the string in longer.

I found this string to have three lives. First life was in the first hitting session; I’m calling that the “game day” session where the full tension, sharp edges and snap back are in full display. The second life is all that thereafter where tension decreases sharply there is some snapback and the sharp edges. The third life is where pretty much after about a week or so for me where there was a lot of tension loss (around 10 lbs) and little snapback and the strings start moving and saying out of place. The sharp edges are still there though and this is a saving grace for this string. That’s where I’m at now bottoming around 39 lbs and ready to cut it out and try it with a round cross string.

This was a really fun playtest so thanks again to TW and to Volkl for making this wonderful opportunity possible.

Between the usual mess of the USTA season and (at least temporarily) switching racquets looking for more power, I am late to this party. But here it is, V-square yellow in the Extreme Pro.

First impressions:
Softer than expected, nice pocketing sensation when hitting the sweet spot. The launch angle is medium+ (to use Thai food heat scale here). Pretty low powered at 51lbs, I was having trouble returning high pace shots - hope the tension drops a bit. I was able to direct the ball quite well, with a nice shape and arch. Makes hitting 2hbh and lifting the ball easier. Look forward to the next hit.

  • Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
Tennis was a family sport but I played non-seriously through high school, including 3 years of JV. I found my love for the game in college where I captained the club tennis team and played first singles for about 4 years. Since then I've played 4.5 for about 15 years, mostly singles. I play a typical power baseline game with a full western grip forehand, a two-handed backhand, and an affinity for slices and drop shots.

  • Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
For about 10 years I have used signum pro poly plasma 16L at 48-50lbs. Lately I have been experimenting with various soft polys, including some from Toroline and Solinco. My current favorite is Hyper-G soft 16L.

  • What racquet did you use for this playtest?
Wilson Pro Staff 97 v14 stock

  • What color(s) did you test?
    Black, full bed.

  • Tension(s) used for playtest?
    50lbs.

  • Power/Control of test string?
I found this string to have a very nice blend of power and control, particularly when the strings were fresh. In the first practice set I played with these (swingvision link below), I found so much control with the spin these strings provided that I could barely hit the ball out. These strings really reward fast, aggressive swings. Where I found them to be a bit lacking was when trying to slow down my swings and control/rally the ball in. For example, in my second session with the strings, we were doing groundstroke games where the first 3 shots have to go down the middle before the point opens up. In this situation, I kept spraying and missing the ball long when trying to just hit down the middle to get the rally going. I also struggled a bit returning powerful shots. These strings do best when you have time to set up and hit a full, aggressive, topspin shot. Strangely I didn't really enjoy hitting slices or kick serves with this string. The bite for the topspin didn't really seem to translate for me on the slices and kick serves.

However, once the strings had 5-6 hours on them, the control dropped off significantly for me, while the power remained the same. The strings do not snap back very well for a poly in a full bed outside of the first few golden hours of use.

  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
Feel I found to be typical for a softer poly. Firmer with a crisper response than signum pro poly plasma but no arm pain that I get with Hyper G regular. When the strings were fresh the feel was great.

  • Spin?
Spin is absolutely top drawer for the first 2-3 hours with this string. After that, it drops to about average for a poly, in my opinion. The lack of snap-back that sets in around hour 5 really puts a damper on the spin.

  • Durability & playability duration?
I have about 8 hours on the string and it is significantly notched, maybe about 50%. In the last session (4th?) I was getting a lot of string movement and also a little bit of arm pain creeping in.

  • Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
My standard tension of 50lbs felt perfect for this setup

  • List any additional thoughts (optional)
This would be a great match-day string for heavy spin players. After 8 hours, I am ready to cut out the string and give the yellow version a try. I have not tried the other colors yet.

For those with an iphone you should be able to view this swingvision session taken by my opponent. For some reason it doesn't work on PC in a browser. Here I am using the string fresh off the stringer and you can see the ball really jumping up and causing my ~4.0 opponent problems. I am the one in the pants.

Thank you Tennis Warehouse @TW Staff and Volkl for this playtest!

  • Tennis background/skill level/playing style: Played tennis 15+ years. Played college tennis. 5.0 ntrp. All around player. Eastern forehand, 2 handed backhand.
  • Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s): Diadem Flash 1.25 at 40 lbs prestretched 25%
  • What racquet did you use for this playtest? Solinco Whiteout 16x19 with 10 grams added on the cap.
  • What color(s) did you test? Yellow
  • Tension(s) used for playtest? 40 lbs prestretched 25%
  • Power/Control of test string? Excellent balance of power and control on fast swing. Very surprised on the precise and predictability on short angle shots even though it is sharply shaped strings. Good enough power on off center shots to keep the ball in. Serves felt powerful than my regular setup and kick and slice serves had more movement keeping my opponent off the court. Extra spin didn't slow down the ball. Volleys and dropshots sprayed a bit more than I expected.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) Crisp and soft. Comfortable enough even outside the sweetspot. The string felt more like 1.20 gauge.
  • Spin? Generated tons of spin. High launch angle on topspin groundstrokes but dipped inside the court. Backhand slice had a tad higher launch angle but was easily adjustable.
  • Durability & playability duration? Not very durable. The playability changed noticeably on each day I practiced with it. Just 15 mins in after warmup and the main and cross strings started moving around. Excellent string for about 1.5 hours of play. After that it turned into a trampoline. Main string snapped after about 4.5 hours of hitting. The string that looked more like a 1.23 gauge ended up with looking more like 1.27 gauge wide at the sweetspot.
  • Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why - Yes, I would go 4 lbs higher for longer playability.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional) - One of the best strings I've used in the playtest. I recommend this string to players that enjoy playing aggressive topspin at the baseline.
Thank you TW and Volkl for this playtest!

So I strung my regular racquet with a new string combo at a higher than usual tension - and it played like a board! In between games I grabbed my Ezone strung with Volkl V-Square @ 48 lbs and it felt great, my game picked up I and I gained a new respect for Volkl's V-Square. Did I mention they lived happily ever after? Seriously, after 11 plus hours I finally found my connection to these strings and racquet. Until then I liked them, but it wasn't the setup that I went to when it mattered. Last night, I didn't have any other choice- but they were absolutely the right choice. It is not that unusual that I like a set up on the second day more than freshly strung, but after this many hours I have usually given up and cut them out. V-Square had been playing well (enough) so I was content to keep them in the racquet - they did everything well-enough, but last night they just felt right and that gave me confidence in just about all of my shots. Shots were solid, with pop, control and plenty of spin.
What changed? They still played about the same (which was very good), but I can only guess that 1) I got used to them, 2) they softened up a bit and that gave me better touch, feel and connection to my shots., and 3) I'm getting more accustomed to my Ezone which is a racquet I don't play that often. When I string V-Square up again I'll make sure to use one of my Pure Strike 98's.

  • Tennis background/skill level/playing style: 4.5 league player, been playing for 15 years. Aggressive baseline and grinder. Working on trying to come to net more but backhand line is the point ending shot.
  • Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):, Been testing lots of different strings but currently using Caviar @50lbs.
  • What racquet did you use for this playtest? Technifibre 305s
  • What color(s) did you test? Black
  • Tension(s) used for playtest? 50lbs
  • Power/Control of test string? The power level was decent for a poly, nothing special but wasn’t taking away from the string. Control was a little unpredictable to me, there were times where shots just flew of the string bed. I did try the black string and wonder if the yellow would have a little more playability and power.
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) The string to me didn’t have much feel, it was unpredictable. There were times it felt crisp but then all of a sudden the next shot had no feel. I am not sure if this was due to the string movement from the first shot I hit. I do prefer string that has better feedback and consistency.
  • Spin? This is where this string was outstanding. Had multiple people tell me that my ball was just jumping off the court, never had to worry about out a ball flying long, the spin dipped the ball just in time. Could also notice the spin on serve, kick serves were ultra effective.
  • Durability & playability duration? Durability was ok, played well for 6hrs I had it in my racquet but broke at the 6hr mark. Was starting to lose tension and playability around the 5-6hr mark so was expecting it to break soon. Would have liked a little more durability.
  • Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? I might go up a little bit in tension to help out on the string movement and the control aspect of the string. Maybe around 52lbs.
  • List any additional thoughts (optional) Was only able to string up the black set so far but looking forward to trying the yellow soon when weather gets a little better and schedule allows time on court.

Alright I just strung up one of my trusty Ultra Tours (18x20 UP equivalent 63ra flex) at 46 lbs. I typically look to see for some feedback regarding string stiffness and tension maintenance before stringing up a frame. First thing I noticed is that this string hurts my fingers a little less than the Weiss Ultra Cable. Win! sorta lol...It still hurt my fingers to string but that is the nature of a 3, 4, 5, 6-sided poly string.

The second thing I noticed is that it seems to be a little springier than the Ultra Cable, a little like the Tecnifibre Soft Razor string with a little polyurethane in it? I am not sure, but I will see after playing with it tomorrow. Off the stringing machine the string bed seems firm (maybe a bit too firm), but it has the high-pitched ping sound of a solid core syn gut. Interesting...

The third thing is that I can see myself buying some of this string for long term use. I will update in the next few weeks.

Played a few sets of doubles at high altitude (8000ft in Buena Vista, CO) and figured V-square would work really well here because of the added spin. Usually it takes me an hour to adjust to the thin air, but today I barely missed anything long. Long balls were dropping in, dipping shots were dipping, serves were kicking up. There was decent control when I needed it and power on tap when I was out of position. Backhands were getting lift. Good touch for drop shots and lobs, volleys were solid and directional. There were definitely a few times when the ball took on a mind of its own, but for the most part it was predictable.

I did have to fix the strings after almost every point, reminded me of the days of synthetic gut. I think that helped with the control. I'm going to try and play some more tomorrow, so far it's been a great choice for high altitude tennis.

Played 3 hours this morning. Went 6-2, 6-3 in dubs with some singles hitting afterwards. The V-square really grips the ball like ultra cable but seems just a bit more lively. I did have to flatten out my shots more due to the grippiness of this string. Next time I might have strung it 40-42 lbs instead of 46 lbs but as the frame is strung now, it is completely playable. I notice the difference between the pocketability of a poly/solid core syn gut set up that is strung at higher tensions by 5-10% and a full bed of poly. Syn gut, while it produces less overall spin, gives more power and feel.

It was windy today, but less so than yesterday where gusts were 25+mph. I made liberal use of offensive lobs and returns more than usual. Nothing more to report today other than my ground strokes were fine. I would have prefer a lower tensioned string bed. V-square doesn't have the elasticity of a Razor soft (which I think tries to emulate poly/syn gut or poly/natural gut) but is still stiffer than either imho.

Switching back to my Nblade 98 still with the Head Lynx Spin2 rPet, the 5 shaped edges have worn down considerably and control has also gone down a bit. I've probably played another 12 hours with this string since the end of the play test. I want to see how durable this string can be. It is fine for playing but for serious tournament match play I would restring with poly/solid core syn gut. I am happy that Head and Volkl have introduced these shaped poly strings. On one of my blade v8s I have MSV focus hex 1.23 and Wilson syn gut power 16 strung at 54 lbs. That is still going strong though I can see much wear on the syn gut crosses. The syn gut will eventually break, and that's when I restring. For full bed poly, once the hitting area becomes too thin and differs from the rest of the string bed by a lot, and once I feel I can no longer hit shots with good control anymore I cut the poly strings out. I mostly hit with 18x20 frames so strings last me longer.

I have an ezone 98 plus which I will restring with a shaped poly and syn gut cross soon. I need to figure out at what tension as it is a 16x19.

Happy Memorial Day weekend all!

Put on another 2 hours on the V-square string this morning before coaching later this afternoon. Lost in a squeaker set 6-7 (6) in dubs. My serve was mostly on today. Kickers to backhands were effective and so were the wide serves. The Ultra Tour/Pro is my "power frame" right now at 63ra flex. Pretty decent touch, excellent spin and control. I will say again that I should have strung this maybe 40-42 lbs instead of 46 lbs. The string seems to be holding tension well. The string is slippery enough sliding around so I also have to adjust the string bed a little before each point. However, this 18x20 string pattern is very closed (I love this), so the strings moved around minimally vs other frames of fellow testers.

This string has such great bite on the ball I sometimes forgot to adjust on slice shots to hit them higher above the net. Some of my shots did not make it over the net. I switched to one of my Blade v8s strung with solid core syn gut and MSV Focus Hex, and the pocketing is so much deeper. Spin is not as great of course, but also more power and feel.

V-square is a great string for me so far. I will play them until they either break (unlikely probably) or until the end of this play test.

Last hitting session today for Volkl V-Squared. I've already submitted my review above. Did one last set of singles with it in the Dunlop SX 300 Tour (yellow) with the yellow string which looks really cool especially with the black Dunlop stencil (which is pretty much gone at this point). The string was on it's 'third life' where it was pretty much bagged out but since it's radical shape it was still playable to shape the ball. Just had to swing a lot harder; also had good time serving with it to the end. I'm definitely recommending this string. It was a fun playtest and I've really enjoyed reading all the comments and thoughts on it; great group! Restringing today and will use V Squared in the mains and probably ISO Speed Baseline Spin (1.20 mm) in the crosses. Want to get a bumble bee look; calln' it the @Chairman3 Bumble Bee. Will post photo here once it's done.

Volkl V-Square Playtest Review - BLACK

Power / Control:
Low - medium power. There’s a noticeable “snapback” effect and solid ball pocketing in the sweetspot—especially on serves and heavier forehands. The “catch and release” feel was quite present. Control remained consistent throughout the early stages of the playtest, and I never felt the need to dial back aggression. That said, I wouldn’t mind a touch more free power for deeper penetration without over-swinging. Once the string went dead (around the 11 hour mark), I started to lose depth control on rally balls.

Feel / Feedback:
Crisp and responsive with decent comfort. Not mushy, but not STIFF. I’d describe it as “firm but fair”—definitely stiffer than a "soft poly", but never truly harsh. Decent feel on volleys and touch shots—particularly short angles, half-volleys, and drop volleys. I wouldn't say that feel was this string's strong-suit. After ~11 hours, feel became noticeably harsher and less predictable.

Spin / Launch Angle:
Spin is a major strength. The string’s sharp edges make it easy to generate kick and shape, especially on second serves and forehand rally balls. The launch angle is slightly higher than neutral, but still easy to manage. I did find it relatively difficult to alternate between topspin and flatter shots - which I didn't mind per-se but I do typically like to flatten out shoulder height balls and this was something I wish would be easier. Spin levels remained high until around the 10 hour mark, when the stringbed started feeling a bit more trampoline-y.

Durability / Playability Duration:
Durability in terms of breakage seems solid—no notching issues or premature snapping. However, playability starts to drop at around 10-11 hour mark. At that point, control starts to fade, and launch angle becomes harder to manage. Wouldn’t recommend pushing past 11-12 hours for match play.

Tension Thoughts:
I’d experiment with dropping tension 1–2 lbs to enhance pocketing and get a bit more dwell time and spin. Possibly a 52/50 or 51/49 setup for my game. Could also test it as a main in a hybrid with a slicker cross for even more snapback.

Additional Notes:
Not much here. I liked the string, but the movement in the early innings was hard for my OCD and I didn't think it was well suited for my game given it was fairly one-dimentional with Spin being the main draw. Glad to have tested! Will try the yellow at some poing - feel like it might have a touch more power which tends to be the case for the more vibrant colors IMO. But those tend to be a bit stiffer in my experience too...

The Chairman3's review of V-Square plus bonus comparison to Ultra Cable.

Tennis background/skill level/playing style: Slightly above average 4.0, I like to play all-court/attacking tennis. Use every shot when needed and have a well-rounded game.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s): If you're interested I have a top 5 list; PT Strike 1.20 is #1 but I test/try alot of strings at 50lbs

What racquet did you use for this playtest?: Wilson Blade 18x19

What color(s) did you test?: Yellow

Tension(s) used for playtest?: 50lbs

Power/Control of test string?:
I was a little surprised with the liveliness of V-Square, it was firm off the stringer but opened up nicely and pretty quickly. I wouldn't say it was a full "power" poly but it had some pop to it. I generally expect shaped strings to be a little on the firm side to allow for control and the other Volkl strings I've used were more on the crisp/firm side as well but not V-square. For me, it leaned slightly to the power side. I felt like I more reliably got a boost in power than I did sublime control. I never felt as confident going down the lines with this string as I do some others but with the spin you do have confidence the ball will stay in play no matter where you aim. The launch angle was also moderate for me at 50lbs but the plus side of such a sharp string is I could mostly dial it up or down depending on the ball I wanted to hit. One of my hitting partners noted early on I was able to drive the ball deeper and it did feel like I noticed some heavier shots pushing back opponents, so a nice little bonus there.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?):
It was a little firm straight off the stringer but opened up early on and very nicely. I would borderline say this string is comfortable and it truly shocked me. I just expect shaped strings to be stiff and, from my experience, Volkl strings are on that stiffer/crisper side, so that was my expectation. It was an extremely pleasant surprise when this wasn't as I tend to prefer softer strings. The feel got a little more springy at 8+ hours but up to that it was just a direct almost neutral feel; not really soft but not firm. The other surprising revelation was the amount of feel and pocketing you got from it. I expect shaped string to be lacking a bit in feel, so another huge plus here. I felt like I could really play my all-court game with this string without sacrificing the feel needed for touch shots and volleys. I did note the string feels pretty thin for a 1.25, so I think that contributed. This is probably in the top 5 best feeling shaped strings because of its consistent playability.

Spin?:
Can I just put YES in all caps? Haha I kid, but as expected the square string has extremely good spin. I do think you still have to put in decent effort, some strings have "lazy spin' where even if you kind of push the ball you still get good RPMs, this one does not as much. I found the ball floating some if I didn't take a decent swing, I think from the little extra pop, but boy does it reward good swings. The string also doesn't have as much of that tactile "bite" sensation but the spin is still there regardless. As I noted earlier, seemed like I was pushing opponents back more and I think the 1-2 punch of a little extra power and alot of extra spin really caused that. Definitely a fun string to use because of the spin and angles you can generate not to mention the kick serves. Despite very early string movement or strings stay out of place, spin pretty much remained the same all the way up to the 14hrs I'm at now. There did seem to be some loss of elasticity around 8-10hrs where it didn't seem like the strings snapped back as hard, so then you have to swing a little more to get the same level of spin. But overall, the shape and edges seem to have held up well for the duration.

Durability & playability duration?:
I'd say durability was good and playability duration was slightly above average and definitely above average for a shaped string. I'm right at 14hrs of playtime, strings are probably 75% notched, so not about to break, and the strings are still decent. Power has increased due to tension loss and the feel is a bit springy, which started around 8-9 hrs but overall performance isn't bad. Tension loss has been linear which means the stringbed response has remained mostly predictable. I consider the performance above average for a shaped string because my experience with shaped strings is usually such that the edges wear down and the feel changes and the string is not as playable. V-square has mostly maintained its playing characteristics up to 14hrs. I'd say optimal time is 8-11hrs, which is pretty good for poly.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why:
I used 50lbs and it felt pretty good for my racquet. The string started out slightly firm and settled in very nicely. I may go down 2lbs just to experiment but I'd say much lower will just increase the launch angle and even possibly make it feel too springy. The string already has nice pocketing and feel so, for me, I don't see a compelling reason to go lower.

List any additional thoughts (optional):
So I was really impressed with this string. I expected typical shaped string performance and it definitely outperformed my expectations by a wide margin. This is a string I could actually use day-to-day because it has enough feel and forgiveness to let me play my all-court style. It didn't hurt that a few people told me I was hitting better. Haha

Compared to Ultra Cable:
As some may have seen, I did a head to head with Ultra Cable, the other square, highly rated for spin string, so here are some brief conclusions. These strings are for two different players. Ultra Cable is for someone who wants to grind with spin from the baseline. Rally ball, rally ball, topspin lob/moonball, push, push, rally ball, opponent makes UE. That's the archetype for Ultra Cable. This is because UC has some decent pop and, obviously, excellent spin but just not enough forgiveness or feel from the stringbed. It started out a little powerful and actually kind of firmed up as time went on. It was definitely bordering stiff when it got cut but despite feeling stiff, it would still slingshot the ball. It just wasn't as predictable as V-square. Meanwhile, V-square is really for the all-court or doubles player where you need some nice pocketing and feel to be able to place volleys or throw in a dropshot. Plus you get a more predictable response when playing those shots compared to Ultra Cable. For spin, they are essentially the same, with a slight edge to Ultra Cable but really very slight. Ultra Cable has more of that biting sensation but it doesn't directly correlate with more spin, just a different feeling. Ultra Cable looks and feels thicker so I think it makes the edges more pronounced to where you get a little of that "lazy spin." But the tradeoff is less feel and predictability, a tradeoff that I'm not willing to make. For a comprehensive comparison, go over to the string comparison database I started where I have a short-form comparison review.

Huge thank you to @TW Staff for allowing me to participate. I look forward to doing some hybrids with the black set and reporting back on that, if anyone has suggestions let me know. My initial thoughts are maybe PT Strike for more control but also maybe HyperG Round.

Put another 90 minutes on the string this evening doing drills and all-out hitting. Tension is slightly down, but string bed is still quite firm. Shots need to be flattened out more for better penetration. Grip is phenomenal. Trying to hit more topspin shots vs slices for practice, but slices are pretty devastating with the closed 18x20 pattern in the Ultra Tour/Pro. Will play and coach some more this weekend. Rain tomorrow.

Just got my racket back from the stringer, so no review or hitting impressions yet - just a quick post to say that the yellow version of the string is giving my Ezone 98 a nice Kyrgios or Shelton-esque look reminiscent of PTP, and to say how struck I am with just how truly square this string is! Even with strings like Hyper G, the string was never this flatly square on the racket face - makes me super interested for how much bite on the ball there will be when I finally get to hit with V-Square tomorrow.

Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
A friend taught me to play in college back in the late 80's. From there, everything else was self-taught from mimicking pros like Sampras, Agassi, Edberg, Courier and Graf, to name a few. I hit flat from both wings with above average (at 4.0) pace and spin. Eastern to semi-western FH and OHBH favoring the slice more as a crutch but gaining more confidence to go over the top during matches. I can hit all serve types having more success with kick versus flat or slice.

Describe your playing style:
I'm a computer rated 4.0 playing men's and mixed dubs. I love singles but am much better at doubles. I would consider myself an all-courter and like to find opportunities to finish points at the net.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
My gamer is a leaded up 2021 Dunlop CX200 Tour 16*19. String setups have been a shaped poly in the main with either a synthetic gut or round poly cross. The current flavor strings have been MSV Focus Hex Soft 17 (yellow) as the mains and Wilson Power Syn Gut 17 (blue) or Isospeed Baseline Spin 17. Tensions are mains at 46# and crosses for polys and syn gut at 46# and 51#, respectively. My last few setups have been shaped poly/round poly.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?
I used my gamer (2021 CX200T 16M).

Tension(s) used for playtest?
46# mains and crosses

What color(s) did you test?
I used the black one and gave my regular hitting partner the yellow one to try as he's a Volkl fan. He uses a Wilson Clash 100 Pro v1 strung with Volkl V-Torque 16 at 41#s, has a 2HBH, hits flat FHs and average spin BHs. In return, he provided feedback that was consistent with what I experienced while allowing me to experience the strings from a recipient's perspective. I was only able to get one session in with him then he broke the strings while I was on a vacation trip.

Tension(s) used for playtest?
46# for me and 41# for my friend.

Power/Control of test string?
On the ground, after a very short (~30 minutes) break-in period, overall power was very good. The added spin created a heavier ball by, deceptively, enhancing the percieved ball speed. Balls seemed to take off on the bounce. My buddy and I were thrown off and were either late or felt rushed hitting against each other. He also commented that his flat shots bothered topspin players more.

On serves, I didn't feel like there was as much power compared to the recent shaped/round poly setups that I played with. Flat serves were just ok. It may have just been me but I didn't experience any wow on serves.

Regarding control, it was very dependent on how committed I was to my swing. Throughout the playtest, it was hit or miss. If I didn't swing all the way through, whether it be on flat or top spinny shots, the sharp square nature of the strings created erratic launch. I was either dumping balls into the net on flat shots or floating them long on top spinny shots. This applied to both groundstrokes and serves. On volleys, balls that were above the net where I didn't have to open the racquet face were fine. Drop shots, however, popped up a lot.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
From the stiffness aspect, the string bed felt firm but comfortable. I've logged in about 16 hours consisting of rally sessions and doubles play. Throughout that period, the string bed softened (consistent with other Volkl strings) and remained comfortable.

String bed feel was average for me. It didn't feel muted or overly crisp. Touch shots around the net weren't as consistent as I'd like but the sharp square edges may have been a large contributing factor.

Spin?
Yup, it's there in abundance. I have to admit, I've never played with squared strings in a full bed. This includes Hyper-G and Ultra Cable. It was most obvious during groundstrokes. Topspins had lots of downward bend and slices had nice sideways action.

Oddly though, I was not seeing as much difference as other strings with serves. It was still ok overall. I think it had to do with me not being able to generate as much RHS. Again, this is that whole committing to the swing thing.

Durability & playability duration?
Both durability and playability duration have been excellent for me. As mentioned, I have logged about 16 hours so far. Notching is somewhere between 50% and 75%. Playability, I'm sure, has degraded but it's been gradual and linear enough as to not have much of an impact on my game. I mean, I still have my up and down days but haven't had any back to back bad days to make me want to cut them out.

My friend is a string breaker with his Clash. He plays with 16g strings and breaks them around the 14 hours, which is about 7 sessions. He broke these in 4 sessions...not a surprise for us. He also mentioned that he didn't feel any degradation in playability before the break.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
If tension was the only thing I can change, I might try going up a couple of pounds to try to improve my consistency.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
I wished I loved these in a full bed but it was to inconsistent for me. I'm prefer the set it and forget it kind of strings. If I didn't give the yellow set away, I would have loved to hybrid this with a round poly. I think this would "smooth out" the sharp square edges and greatly improve my consistency. This leads to who these strings are for. I would highly recommend these to players who can naturally produce a smooth full stroke. The modern topspin game is preferred but not required.

My friend really liked the strings. His mentioned that he'd switch if the 16g version can get him 6 more hours. He said that even though it was harder to adjust his stroke (Once he got the hang of it, it was good to go.) to the V-Square vs the V-Torque, he liked the extra power (Flatter shots bothered topspin players more.) and how it played against higher topspin balls.

Lastly, thank you so much to TW and Volkl for generously allowing me to participate in this fun playtest!

Played another 3 hours this morning and won all rotating partner sets comfortably. The string bed is still too firm for my liking, but I found ways to win. i had to make conscious efforts to turn my wrist over on every ground stroke due to firm string bed. Failed on a few of my droppers either striking the net or pushing the ball too long setting up my opponents for an offensive shot. My returns have been pretty ok slicing them back to the server or hitting offensive loopy returns. But I generally try to hit offensive returns back to the server or when I see net person move (too early), go for down the line returns. My serves were pretty offensive. One returner remarked my cannons being tough lol. Sometimes I hit serves too short trying to hit my usual kickers. I tried to mix it up some like a good pitcher does. Overall pretty solid tennis though I know I can play even better.

The string is holding up well. Tension keeps going down but not really fast as the string bed still feels firm. This string and the ultra cable are the grippiest strings. Swing path needs to be more driving and linear while slice shots need not be too aggressive to be effective. Still trying to find my range on drop shots.

Got in my first playtest with the V-Square yellow, and I have to say, I liked the string more than I expected to, just because I didn’t think it was going to be my style of string. The feel is as many have noted, firm but with a softness to the elasticity that I find really pleasing. Playing singles for about 90 minutes, I found great control, good feel, and as expected, excellent spin. I wasn’t able to get putaway power on my forehand yet (but I was aiming more for consistency than winners), but serves I was told, had some extra pace. Second serves, I found reliable spin. Just for comparison’s sake, I liked the feel of V Square in a 2022 Ezone 98 more than Otoro Tour/Wasabi X in my Gravity Pro today. It’s a closer call against regular Otoro/Wasabi X - I’ll certainly be tempted to try V Square with a round cross sometime. But so far, I am very impressed - as a former Volkl racket user I guess I’m not surprised I liked the Volkl string. Fuller official review to come after more time hitting with it.

Tennis experience/background:

Started playing tennis just to knock the ball around 3 years ago, 1.5 years ago I decided to get serious and I started playing every day. Declined several D3 offers, gearing up for high school season. Today I would say that I am a solid 7ish UTR who hits with just about everyone- I am competitive with the 9 UTRs, and I can beat up on 5 UTRs pretty easily. strongest touch shots he’s seen, so I always look to complement those strengths.

Describe your playing style:

I have pretty big strokes but need to improve on consistency. Definitely lean towards an all-court style of play, and I love moving to the net. My coach says I have one of the biggest serves in the club and some of the strongest touch shots and volleys.

Usual set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
2022 Ezone 98 with Mach 10 mains and Hyper G round crosses at 48lbs.

Racket Used: 2022 Ezone 98

What color(s) did you test?
Yellow
Tension(s) used for playtest?
48lbs

Power/Control of test string?

Power fell to be about average. There was nothing exceptional about it and there was nothing horrendous about it. It didn’t have the same kind of pop that Alu or Mark. 10 had, but I thought that there was more than enough power to keep my shots coming with weight. Control was good, especially considering that this is a shaped string. For an aggressively shaped, four sided string, I found it to be remarkably consistent. I never felt comfortable placing the ball on a dime, and this string definitely worked best when I was just looking to get the ball back, deep in a general area instead of trying to put the ball on a certain spot.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)

I didn’t think that the field was overly stiff, but it did feel slightly plastic. It was firm, but it was never uncomfortable. The ball pocketing was surprisingly good, and the ball sank into the string bed pretty well, so I was happy with the dwell time, but some people who like more point, and shoe type of strings would not appreciate this as much.

Spin?

Spin was incredible. Probably the best of any string that I’ve used snap back was about average and it started to fall off after about four hours. But either way I was still very happy with the way that it performed. It seems that a lot of the spin came from a higher launch angle, but it still felt very predictable in terms of how much spin there would be.

Durability & playability duration?

I broke this string in about six hours, which is well below what I normally get out of strings as I’m not a string breaker, but it felt like the strings started to snap back significantly less after the four hour mark. At this point, the ball started to fly long as tension dropped, and snapback decreased. For those reasons. I found it to be inconsistent over the life of the string, even though I found it to be consistent while I was playing.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
I would keep on stringing it at 48 pounds, especially given that the dwell time was above average, and for that reason, it almost felt a little softer than it actually was.
List any additional thoughts (optional)
Overall, I was pretty happy with the string. This is an absolute string monster that I would recommend over RPM blast because it was softer but I would not expect this string to last a long time. At $160 per real. I would recommend this over an RPM type string any day of the week because of its value and arm-friendliness.

Thank you TW for the opportunity to playtest this string!

Tennis background/skill level/playing style:I played tennis in high school for four years. Then dabbled with tennis and college with intramural sports but not on the team. I resumed playing once I got married. I have been playing tennis for about 25 years recreationally. I really don’t play competitively too often. I prefer singles, but do play doubles on occasion. I also drill 1 to 2 days per week. I am a USTA 4.0 player. My playing style is mainly baseliner who relies on a big serve for easy points. Working on adding more all court elements, but my net game is my weakness.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s): my current go to is Hyper G 17g @ 48lbs

What racquet did you use for this playtest? Yonex Percept 100D

What color(s) did you test: Yellow

Tension(s) used for playtest: 48lbs

Power/Control of test string:

Power: the power level of this string felt slightly higher than your basic poly string. I wouldn’t classify it as a power poly, but it did play slightly more lively than most. I would put it on par with my HyperG string. Really noticed the power a bit more when the strings were fresh and it died down steadily over the playtest.

Control: felt like the control of this string was slightly higher than HyperG, but more so on spin shots vs flat shots. The level of spin helped keep balls in play (especially forehands) with diving spin. The Percept’s dense pattern already has great control, but the added spin helped in that regards. It felt like the string was impacting spin on shots I wasn’t intentionally adding spin to. Most of the time this was great at controlling balls. However, occasionally the additional spin would cause balls to land shorter than I would have liked.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)

The string had a very firm feeling to it. I noticed that when stringing it the strings did not stretch much at all. Early on it had a stiff/firm feeling to them, however not uncomfortable until much later in the playtest. Touch shots had a certain crisp feeling. Over the playtest the crisp/firm feeling softened slightly to a more firm/muted feel.Towards the end of the playtest, I did get some minor should pain which usually (among other things) is a result of dead strings. I preferred the feeling on volleys and ground strokes, but would have preferred a more plush experience on serves.

Spin: this was the greatest aspect of the string. I remember the first time I tried Tour Bite and was blown away by the spin generation. Then I tried WC Ultra Cable and was again blown away. This string gave me feelings of those strings. You can really feel the strings biting into the ball and creating that rotation in all your shots. Topspin groundstrokes dive into the court, kick serves grab the court and jump, slices dig in and stay low. This string reminds my of Volkl Cyclone with a spin boost. I loved the way I was able to manipulate the ball even with a dense string pattern frame.

Durability & playability duration? I noticed notching relatively early, which is pretty normal for defined shaped strings like these with sharp edges. The spin nature of the string stayed pretty consistent throughout, only waning towards the end. Power/control seemed to follow a little more of a drastic downward slope. I got a good 12 hours with these strings of singles and doubles before they did become uncomfortable and my shoulder started asking for a new string job.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why

I was pretty happy with my choice of 48. Maybe to soften up things a bit, I’d give lower 40s a go to experiment with. But overall at 48lbs I did not find anything out of the norm that the string did bad at that tension.

List any additional thoughts (optional)

A lot like Ultracable this string is sharp. So stringing this thing was not a super pleasant experience. If you are not careful, it is a good chance it would cut you up. But take your time and the sharp edges can really help you cut into the ball and not your hands.

Thanks TW and Volkl for the opportunity to test this string. I would say it’s a solid offering that I would recommend to my players/clients looking for a great spin string.

Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
Playing on and off (mostly off) since the age of 13. NTRP 4.0. Prefer singles, but play doubles as well.

Describe your playing style:
I like to dictate points and set up winners from the baseline using pace, spin, and ball placement. Learning how to finish points at the net and not let easy wins slip away.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
Recent mainstays are Lynx Tour 1.20mm, RPM Blast 1.20mm, O-Toro and K-Pop.
Tension usually between 46-52 depending on the weather and the string.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?
Head Extreme Pro 2024.

Tension(s) used for playtest?
51 lbs.

What color(s) did you test?
Yellow

Power/Control of test string?
At the initial 51 lbs tension, the string bed felt underpowered. I had trouble getting depth on my shots, especially against pace. After ~30 minutes of hard hitting, the tension dropped and the stringbed settled. For the next several hours, it was an almost perfect amount of power, on the low to average side, you get exactly what you put in. Even as the string bed lost tension after many hours of play, it never became uncontrollable or launchy.

Directional control is good to excellent in the first couple of hours of play (on par with RPM), becoming somewhat erratic as the strings begin to notch. The strings have very sharp edges and get stuck out of place from the start. I had to adjust them after every point, otherwise the accuracy suffered. As the strings get notched more and more, it becomes difficult to dislodge them and the string bed response grows less predictable. In the first couple of hours I was comfortable playing either singles or doubles. Eventually it became too erratic for singles matches, but worked perfectly for doubles for several hours longer.

Last but not least, the string has excellent touch. I was comfortably putting away directional volleys, lobbing on the run, drop-shotting, hitting difficult off-speed shots on the run, etc. all with perfect placement.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
The string is crisp, almost stiff, but has some give and good pocketing in the sweet spot. I felt some minor elbow soreness after an hour of volley drills, but overall it was comfortable in a full bed at a relatively high tension.

Spin?
Spin is excellent. I could get great angles off my shots. Topspin lobs dropped in, dipping shots dipped, second serves kicked up high. This string produces such heavy spin that it felt great for playing at high altitude where the balls tend to fly long.

On the other hand, slices were just OK. The string edges are so sharp that it was easy to produce floaters, and took some effort to keep them low.

Durability & playability duration?
First 2-3 hours of play were outstanding. The string started to notch more and more as time went on, and I had to hit harder and harder to generate snapback and control the shots. After ~6 hours the strings became too erratic for match play, as I rely heavily on ball placement in my game. They were still fine for rallies and practice after that.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
I would string around 50-52 lbs if playing in warm and sunny conditions, and 45-47 lbs indoors or in cooler weather because of stiffness.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
I think that in a full bed, this is the perfect string for doubles - great at high-pace baseline hitting, volleys, kick serves, dips, and lobs. It's really just so much fun that I am considering making this my go-to string for doubles.
For singles I would like to try it in a hybrid with a slick round cross to reduce notching and improve snapback and accuracy.

Thanks to TW and Volkl for the opportunity to test this string!

Ok my official review is somewhere up above; but as promised and as suggested by @Chairman3 ... when it comes to time to restring I'm doing the Chairman3 Bumble Bee Pattern ... this is Volkl V Squared Mains 1.25 in Yellow with ISO Speed Baseline Spin 1.25 (Round Black poly) Crosses. This is in the Dunlop SX 300 Tour (previous version). 54lbs M / 52lbs X

Would like to hear how that plays for you - I’m thinking I am going to try to hybrid with a round cross too sometime.

Looks killer

Tennis background/skill level/playing style:

started in the mid 80s. Rural WV, no instruction, no exposure, nothing. I have since been to camps run by Bollitieri, Van der Meer and Harry Hopman. I have read books on tennis, videos, been to Roland Garros and US Open and Cincinnati several times. I still play a lot of local tournaments and can handle most of the players at my age/level. I turn 69 in June.

Describe your playing style (i.e. serve & volley):

At my best, I was a certified 5.0 doubles player and 4.5 singles player. Now, I consider myself a high 3.5/low 4.0 Haven't played singles in years, but can still play a pretty good lefty slicing and OHBH game. Coming in at every opportunity. Forehand is my big weapon.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):

gut in the mains at 62 lbs., poly in the crosses at 55 lbs.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?

I had an opportunity to use a Head Extreme MP 16X19.

Set-up, as required. Tension(s) used for playtest?

53 Mains – 50 crosses (usually I string poly at 55, multi at 57 and gut at 62 in my mains) Edges felt really sharp, but strung up quite nicely, very little blood from my fingertips on the strings after all. (j/k, I could feel the sharpness though)

I’m sorry, I wanted to write an overall positive review, but I just can’t. I have some people I strung this for in a Pure Drive back a few years ago. They hated it. I was hoping something had improved the string.

Power/Control of test string?

I specifically used both other poly and gut/poly setups I have and compared to them. No real extra power at all, especially on serve. I switched back and forth during a few friendly practice sets, as well as a solo serving session. Same swing that produced a nice serve on either a Solinco String, or the gut/poly combo produced multiple faults into the net with the Volkl string. The shots did go where I pointed them

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)

I felt no arm pain. I kept hoping that the square nature of the string would result in some real “bite” on the ball, a crispness. I felt none at all. Nothing bad, just nothing good.

Spin?

I did not notice that spin was particularly enhanced on groundstrokes. Either forehand or backhand. Exaggerated swing paths produced extra spin. But a regular (Eastern FH/BH grip) swing produced very little if any extra spin.

Playability duration?

I have about 10 hours in and do not notice any notching at all. I am not a real string breaker at all.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time?

If I get the chance I will probably drop tension down to like 50/45 lbs. to see if that will bring out any of this additional spin and bite that seem to be this string’s raison d’etre.

List any additional thoughts (optional)

I really liked the screaming yellow zonker look (people who grew up in the 60s might get this snack food reference) that the bright yellow strings had in the bright yellow frame. I wanted to like this string, but I just couldn’t. Perhaps I was not a hard enough hitter for the strings to really bite into the ball. Maybe, just maybe, if you dropped tension and put in a round slick cross and used this on the mains only, the promised spin would appear.

Volkl V-Square 1.25

Tennis experience/background:

I am a 4.0 level player. I started playing at age 7 during the summers and mostly everyday starting in high school. Stopped playing almost altogether through college and grad school. Picked it back up again in 2019 just hitting with a ball machine. Joined my local tennis league to start playing matches again in 2020. I have dabbled in a couple weekend USTA tournaments, but mostly play in my local league for matches twice a week and practice with a ball machine on weekends.

Skill level & playing style:
I consider my style a combination between aggressive baseliner and counter puncher. I adjust my playstyle to my opponent. I consider myself speedy on the court for my age and will try to track down most balls. My volley game is below average for my level and will try and stay at the baseline. My strongest shots are my forehand and serve (when it's consistent).

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
I have been back with the 2023 Yonex VCore98 as my main stick as of late. I have been using Toroline Wasabi Pomegranate in the mains with Toroline Caviar 1.20 in the crosses. I usually string at 50 lbs in the mains and 48lbs in the crosses.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?:
I used a Diadem Axis 98 for this playtest. My usual Vcores are pretty open and with such a sharply shaped string, I wanted to try the string in a frame with a tighter stringbed.

Color used for the playtest:
I decided to go with a full bed of the black set.

Tension(s) used for playtest:
I went with my regular 51/49lbs tension.

Power/Control of test string:
The power of the string on its own was middle of the road. It didn't give me anything extra when going for bigger shots, but it also didn't produce fliers on more defensive shots. Control was a bit more difficult to truly analyze due to how sharp the string was. The control you got from this string was from the great spin. However, due to the same sharp nature, depth consistency was not as predictable. Spin would keep balls from sailing long, but sometimes balls would go pretty short.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?):
I had no issues with arm discomfort from this string. I honestly expected some sort of fatigue or issue with this string due to its sharp nature, so that was a pleasant surprise. I also expected more of a crisp feel, but instead got a firm feel with nice pocketing.

Spin:
Of all the strings I have tested, this was easily the string with the most spin. Admittedly, I haven't tried any WC UC, but even "high spin" strings like Wasabi and Mayami Big Spin do not really compare. This was both the best and worst attribute of the string for me. This string forces you to maintain a modern top-spin stroke. Slices were also great and gave great low bite. As previously mentioned the high sharp spin nature of the string created some issues for me with depth consistency. Another place where the spin was hard to control was serves. I would find that it provided great kick on second serves...if I was able to catch the ball in the perfect place on the string bed. Slices were easier to control and found myself mostly using this serve with the strings. Flat serves gave an almost knuckleball like effect, which was great when they went in.

Playability duration:
Flat shots became a bit erratic towards the end of the playtest. It was hard to tell if this was due to tension loss or due to different amount of wear on the string bed. Others have mentioned the lack of snap-back with this string and I experienced this as well after about 3 hours of play. I would find myself readjusting strings after every point. I played the set for 10 hours, but would have normally cut it out after 4-5 hours due to the constant readjusting of strings.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why:
String is comfortable enough to string higher. I could go up a couple pounds on both the mains and crosses for next time to see if that would increase playability duration and predictability for me.

List any additional thoughts (optional):
Ultimately, this is not the string for me. At least that is the case in a full bed. I will try it out with Sync as a cross to attempt and get more sliding from the mains on a smooth cross. It is definitely fun and addicting to see some "big dippers" when you try to pin the ball in the corner. I would say that if you have been able to hone your game with a sharply shaped string already then you could give this a shot for some good times.

Thank you to TW and Volkl for the opportunity to participate in this playtest. Volkl has a special place in my heart, so it is great to see they are still going strong in the tennis world.

  • Tennis background/skill level/playing style:
  • I'm about a 4.0-4.5 UTR in doubles, on a good day I'm a 4 in singles. I've always been a "spinny" groundstrokes person, with always looking to slice out wide, kick serve, and counterpunch. I've always struggled with put away shots, mainly due to my counterpunching style, and as the name entails, western grip.
  • Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
  • I jump around between Luxilon 4g anywhere from 45-47 pounds, and Solinco Hyper G from 50-52 pounds.
  • What racquet did you use for this playtest?
  • Babolat Pure Drive 2015 model (R2D2 paintjob)
  • What color(s) did you test?
  • I tested yellow in the mains, and black in the crosses based off of some early reviews I read on this thread
  • Tension(s) used for playtest?
  • Both mains and crosses were strung at 50 pounds
  • Power/Control of test string?
  • There is not very much power on this string combo, which is expected as a poly. However, I will say it also isn't that big of a control orientated string combo in the traditional sense, such as a string like 4g that is dead feeling and consistent. This combo definitely leans towards control, but nothing special
  • Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
  • This review might be a bit different than most, since I strung up the hybrid with the idea of merging the positives of both colors of the string. I would not call this a mushy poly at all, and was not crisp. This felt like some rejected prototype of solinco tour bite, in the sense that it isn't quite stiff enough to be a control string, which is not a bad thing if that is what you are looking for. I feel like it was comfortable for a poly, but it is not a comfortable string. The one thing I did crave was liveliness which I feel like it needs more of to separate it from the generic shaped poly pile, The benefit of this string comes in the spin, which I'll talk about below.
  • Spin?
  • Being a square shape, this is the bread and butter of the string: spin. This string has massssive bite, and I say that as someone who has traditionally always played with generic shaped polys until I started to tone it down and use 4g. The bite will add spin to your shots, whether you like it or not. For my slice serves and kick serves, it was amazing...as long as you crank up the swing speed. It does make serving flat or hitting flatter more difficult, almost as if you have to crank up swing speed to have some kind of control. If you are not ready to hit with spin, this bite/spinny stiff feeling will cause you to launch the ball.As tension dropped in the 7 hour mark of consistent hitting, the shape started to die down as the strings notched. One other thing that i noticed is that the string isn't as slick as you would thing, and did not have as much snapback as other shaped strings. It definitely can be a polarizing string, as I feel like you must be a more modern player to take full advantage of it.
  • Durability & playability duration?
  • The string snapped at hour 11. As far as playability, I think it is average for a shaped poly. The strings will notch, the strings will lose their snapback, and will stay in place until you break it. It is decently consistent throughout the playtest, but it is nothing out of the normal 10 hour mark lifespan for string
  • Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
  • I would like to string full bed of the yellow version, just because yellow polys are generally a bit softer and livelier, which is what I feel this combo lacked. I'd also go looser to increase the power
  • List any additional thoughts (optional)
  • As always, thank you TW and the TT community for giving me an opportunity to playtest and share opinions on different strings and merchandise. I'm always available to give my 2 cents, and share my personal experience and represent the extreme grip groundstrokes!

Would like to hear how that plays for you - I’m thinking I am going to try to hybrid with a round cross too sometime.

@Asquared Here's the first impressions from hitting with the ball machine and then doing some serve practice today. Official review is above (full-bed v-Squared yellow). This is the second setup with V-Squared mains and ISO Speed Baseline Spin in the crosses 54/52. This could also be a comparison with the full-bed V-Squared (yellow). With the round poly in the crosses, I'd say I'm still getting quite a bit of spin noticeably more than with a full bed of round poly (typically what I use). The power / control ratio with this setup also seems good, feel is good; it very comfortable. I am expecting to see quite a bit of tension loss as both of these strings do seem to share that in common. I was able to get good placement, very good kick/slice on serves. I didn't really see any loss of control and perhaps a bit more power with this setup. The only issue I had was some consistency with the BH slice but this was just coming off hitting with another frame and string setup that's almost flawless for BH slice. I haven't experienced any string movement and snapback seemed quite good and just a tiny start of notching. So far so good and I'm looking forward to using this setup in doubles tomorrow.

Volkl V-Square 1.25 Review
Tennis background/skill level/playing style:

Played in high school. If I could go back in time I would have focused all extra time on tennis training lol. Played ultimate for years after. Came back to the greatest sport on earth during Covid. NTRP 4.5 - 5.0. Making solid progress towards the upper range. I hit with one and two hands on back-hand side. All court player. I try to get to net but ok to grind from baseline.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s):
I play with a shaped poly (MSV focus hex 1.23 or Weiss Ultra Cable) and either Kirschbaum Max Power 1.20 or a solid-core syn gut 16 with kevlar wrap depending on season. During summer I go with full poly, but lately I am really liking the pocketing that solid-core syn gut provides. I play with 3 main frames (I know I should narrow this down to one, but there are so many good frames out there lol): Wilson Ultra Tour/Pro 18x20 (used for this play test), Wilson Blade v8 or N Blade 98 18x20, and Dunlop CX 200 tour 18x20. For the Wilson UT 46 lbs both poly mains and syn gut crosses.

What racquet did you use for this playtest?
Wilson Ultra Tour 18x20 - I dismissed this frame 2x before finally realizing this is a great control frame. FYI don't dismiss any frame right off the bat until you spend good time with it and tinker with the string set-up and grip.

What color(s) did you test?
Yellow

Tension(s) used for playtest?
46 lbs. I should have strung this at 42 lbs. Higher tension lasts longer, and I wasn't sure how fast it would lose tension. But now the string bed feels much better.

Power/Control of the test string:
Power was on the low side but not objectionable. Control was pretty good. I had to adjust to hitting a bit more through the ball as this string really grips the ball. This string feels a bit more lively than the Ultra Cable which is one of my go-to strings. Spin is really great, up there with Ultra Cable. I would like more pocketing and power so I will hybrid half the black set with solid core syn gut next. Power and control are influenced by many variables - ambient temps, technique, string to ball friction, string to sting friction, string elasticity, vibration, hardness of ball used, etc.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?)
Feel was pretty good for a poly which are typically stiffer than all other string types. String feels more lively than Ultra Cable. Feel/comfort is a function of string tension also. Overall string felt lively and on the firm side. After a few more weeks the pocketing aspect will increase as will the comfort.

Spin?
Spin was tops similar to Ultra Cable. Better than anything else out there. I am wondering if Kirschbaum and MSV will both offer a square poly in due time... The grip really showed on kick serves and slice serves. Likewise, the string was really grippy on slice ground strokes, sometimes my slice shots came up too short.

Durability & playability duration?
Durability is excellent so far. After 13 hours it is still playable for me due to higher string tension, but also my UT has a very closed string bed.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why
If I had only a few days to test this string I would try it at 40 lbs. Since I had several weeks I strung it at 46 lbs and let the string bed settle. Maybe as a compromise I would have strung it at 42 or 43 lbs next time. But ideally, I would like to pair this with a solid core syn gut on the cross string. I would string this set up at 46 lbs. maybe 47 lbs.

List any additional thoughts (optional)
Thank you very much TW for the opportunity to review this string! The V-Square grips the ball so well it needs to be paired with a round poly or solid core syn gut string to moderate the spin. By doing so the string bed would also add some power and feel. I typically go for strings that hold tension well. Ultra Cable is acceptable though not great. V-square, though similar to Ultra Cable, feels a bit more lively than the former. Too much spin can result in too many short balls which can be put away by better players.

String bed is starting to notch a little, but this doesn't bother me at all as I set up my frames based on friction and not so much on snap back which can be violent and non-linear. Witness all those bouncy balls hit by FAA, Ruud, Rune, Rafa of course, and a ton of others. Those balls are hard to control in terms of depth. This string set-up (lack thereof) also partly explains why Novak hits such a good ball with a moderately closed 95" control frame.

Probably too firm for players with arm issues - I don’t usually have arm issues but at times I felt a tiny bit of discomfort so I would lower the tension next time.
* Spin? High, with high launch angle; maybe even too much bite?
* Durability & playability duration?
* Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why. yes? Would go looser for more liveliness and power, maybe 46/44?
* List any additional thoughts (optional)

As I stated in my first impressions post above, I ended up liking V-Square more than I expected to (not being a regular user of Hyper G or other 4 sided strings). What pleased me was the combination of the high degree of control I found in this string, together with the nice bit of give I got in the feel. I hardly ever missed long and some angled shots, I feel like the spin afforded by V-Square kept my ball from going wide as well.

That said, the launch angle was definitely high and I got a lot more bite on the ball than I do with Hyper G or Tour Bite. Most of the time, this worked in my favor, as I’m a relatively flat hitter who has added more modern spin to my shots but have also been working on getting more net clearance; the V-Square definitely helped with this. But, at times, the launch angle was erratic, as some others have found, with my shots taking a higher looping arc than I meant, while staying in. Overall, the bite worked in my favor more than it hurt.

Tension maintenance has been good, with hardly any tension loss until the 3rd or 4th hour of hitting. I like the slight liveliness but want more of it so instead of stringing 49/47 I’d likely go 45/43 next time, and use a slick round poly cross to moderate the bite for more consistent, slightly lower launch. The trade-off from the high level of control I got was that I found put-away power hard to access unless I hit the ball just right and flat.

Serves had great spin, especially on kick serves. Volleys were firm with punch, but also a nice bit of feel on drop volleys.

My other racket hasn’t come back from the stringer yet, but I plan to supplement this review with impressions of the black V-Square in my 2023 Gravity Pro. And after that, interested to try either color in a hybrid with a round cross - maybe Enso Pro?

Thanks to TW and Volkl for the opportunity to try this string - I am considering a switch to this as my mains, as it had great control from the high degree of spin but also some of the pocketing and feel I like from O-Toro and Alu Power.

Director of Town Tennis program for over 20 years. Top level 4.0 plus singles and doubles. Modern strokes and grips. All court game. Stringing since 1992.

Current string set-up(s) and preferred tension(s): Volkl Cyclone 19G in a full bed. 54/52 string on constant pull machine

What racquet did you use for this playtest?
Volkl Quantum Scorcher 102 Head Size - 16 x 19 pattern - modified 11.6 oz 6 points HL RA - 60

What color(s) did you test?
Black

Tension(s) used for playtest? 54/52

Power/Control of test string? I found this string to be low to mid power. When I strung it I was surprised it had so much give on the machine. It was about the same as the Cyclone 19G and created the same power curve for me. I did not experience any major hot spots or dead zones. The TW University data was listed for the 16G and tracked with the thinner 17G. The frame I used also has the mains closer in the center and creates a more controlled string bed. I loved the power output and was confident I was not going to hit too many flyers and I did not.

Feel (Stiff? Mushy? Muted? Crisp? Comfortable?) The string was a bit muted and did not have great feel like a nice round string. It was very easy on my body and I felt no ill affects from the string. The string pocketed the ball great and created some nice dwell time and therefore excellent control. Even with the slightly muted feel I still felt connected to the ball.

Spin? Top rated spin string for a reason. Massive spin window and I am used to Cyclone 19G and Tourna BIG Hitter 17G. Slices and topspin not really fair to the person on the other side of the net. My favorite shot with this string was the backspin dropper.. again not really fair. The surface of the string bed was serious;y sharp to the touch and I had to take care while stringing with my fingertips. You looking for the spin string this is the one.

Durability & playability duration? I played.. taught with this string for about 20 hours. It was a bit stiff to start with but it really opened up and played pretty well for at least the 1st 12-15 hours. I am no longer a big hitter so I would expect stronger players would get much less magic time with this offering. Used in a small head and tight pattern would help this offering last.

Tension Recommendations. Would you string it differently next time? Explain why: I just used my normal tension and it worked well for the test. Since I am no longer a strong hitter I would drop the tension to 50/48 to help me create more free power. This frame I use also has a lower RA so while great on the arm and for control at times needs a power boost to help my lack of swing speed.

List any additional thoughts (optional) : I really enjoyed this string and is very similar to other strings I love to play with. The price point of this string is great and in reels is even better. Thanks TW and Volkl for the fun string to test and report back on. I do enjoy Volkl products and their skis. :)
