HYBRID REVIEW - Rexis Activate 1.25/POLYTOUR DRIVE 1.25
Tennis experience/background: Playing tennis off and on for 50+ years. Started at 10 in 1972. Played Jr. High, High School tennis teams. Played USTA singles, doubles, mixed. Currently USTA 4.0. Love the game. I am a stringer for friends, club players and the local high school team.
Playing style: all court, I play with spin; semi-western forehand, slice and topspin 1hbh. Always looking to move forward when possible and finish at the net.
Racquet used: Dunlop CX 2000 Limited (Blacked out one).
String Setup Yonex Poly Tour Drive mains / Rexis Activate crosses Hybrid setup. Tension used in playtest 52 lbs.
Power 8.5/10 – the power level of this setup in this control oriented frame is almost perfect, it’s so good that I’m seriously considering keeping this string setup indefinitely. I felt like I was getting more power on my serves with this setup; especially flat serves.
Control 9/10 – I felt pretty confident on all strokes with this string; control was very good. I could go for my shots without altering my swing speed; as the weather is getting into the 90’s now I can see that ball is flying a bit more but while it was in the 70’s and 80’s this setup was pretty ideal. Probably the string tension has diminished a bit too after the first couple of weeks. This being said the string setup is still completely playable.
Feel 8.5/10 – performed well on touch shots around the net and with volleys. It’s a balanced setup between crisp but comfortable; this frame is very control oriented with a denser string pattern in the center of the frame. I am getting great feel on drop shot of both sides. I’m feeling very connected to the ball with this string setup. It’s also a great setup for bump lobs in doubles off the serve so I really enjoy playing for feel shots with it. This string setup really shines when it comes to feel. It would probably get even better in a full bed of Rexis Activate.
Spin 7.5/10 – spin potential is ok. I wouldn’t say this is the strong suit for this setup but it is adequate. The frame also isn’t very spin oriented but I do try to hit with topspin and slice off both sides and I feel the setup is above average for a hybrid. I’m not getting crazy amounts of spin but I feel very confident hitting out with kickers on serve and with topspin off both sides. When it comes to slice it’s great on the 1HBH slice and also on forehand slice or on chipping returns back; the ball stays low and it’s very effective.
Playability Duration 9/10 – since this string bed / grommet setup on this version of the CX 200 is quite dense in the middle; I’m getting above average playability and duration. I’m not seeing any notching or string lockup at all. I am seeing some string movement which is completely expected from a hybrid setup like this; but even this is quite minimal. It’s not like I have straighten the strings very often and they do not get wildly misplaced. I’m also not seeing any fraying on the crosses yet which is very nice. I can see the mains are still able to glide along the crosses very well so I expect to have this string in until some time in early June which will be over 1 month since stringing it up. So for me in this frame durability has been quite good. Yonex Rexis activate really gives an added dose of comfort and plushness to this frame. I’m very happy with the combination of the playability and durability of this string; I think it’s a strong suite for it (for a multi).
Tension recommendations Strung at 52 and this seemed ok. I think this time of year with our heat coming on I might even go a couple pounds higher. But when it was in the 70 to 80 degree range in late spring it was just about perfect. But playability remains good. Since I’m playing mainly in the mornings now, I think this makes quite a difference.
Additional thoughts: I really am enjoying getting back to a nice plush, comfortable setup like this especially in this control frame. I’m thinking now that this is pretty much the ideal setup for this frame since it gives me just a bit more power that I really need to play with this racquet otherwise it would be just a bit too demanding with a full bed of poly in it.
I love the color and look in this frame as well with the black/white on the blacked out frame. It’s really nice.
As noted this string setup really compliments this frame’s playabiltiy so well that I’m going to keep this setup indefinitely. The 1.25 mm setup is great. I think this setup would be a perfect year ‘rounder for this CX200. I think it’s a keeper in this frame for sure. The value Rexis Activate provides especially considering the great reputation that Yonex has, is very much appreciated. Thank you Yonex and Tennis Warehouse for giving me the opportunity to test this excellent string setup.
