Solinco Racquet Playtest: White Out 305

String and tension used for test:
Multiple setups.
Head Velocity MLT 1.30 @ 50/52 for 2 hours
Head Velocity MLT 1.30 @ 52/55 for 10 hours
Babolat VS touch 1.30 mains, Kirschbaum Pro Line Evolution 1.25 Crosses @55/52 for 3 hours
Babolat VS touch 1.30 mains, Velocity MLT 1.30 Crosses @??/55 for 7 hours and counting.

Tennis experience/background:
Self taught player, currently playing at USTA 4.0 levels. I no longer play any tournaments however my hitting partners typically get to Quarters or higher at 4.0 tournaments and I normally split sets with them.

Describe your playing style (i.e. serve & volley):
I am mostly aggressive baseliner. I will play serve and volley if opponent is just blocking serves back, otherwise I only come to net to finish points.
Serve and return are my best shots. I do not hit with ton of spin unless I am defending. My OHBH has more spin than my forehand.

Current racquet/string setups:
I typically play with extended (27.5") racquet(s). Regular ones until January were Dunlop CX 200+ (2 grams of lead at 12 and 7g in butt) and Yonex Ezone 98+ (playing stock) both with Gut (1.30)/Poly (1.25) @55/52.
However since late January this year my shoulder has been bothering me a bit and hence I have been playing with Pure Aero 2019 with full bed Head Velocity 1.30 @50/53.

How many hours did you play with the racquet?
22 hours

Comments on racquet performance for each stroke (each section should be 3-5 sentences minimum):
All racquet performance comments are based on string setups that worked well for me. Racquet was used with 5gm weighted butcap and dampener without overgrip.

Groundstrokes 9/10:
In summary ground strokes were reliable. I got more spin on my shots compared my regular racquets and very similar to PA 2019. I was able to land my shots where I wanted pretty easily. I lost little bit of power/pace compared to my extended length racquet, but not too much to be cause of concern.
Short angled forehand, inside out forehand and down the line backhand were improved compared to extended length racquet (may be due to easy maneuverability). My Approach shots were much better, I was able to hit short or deep based on the need.
Compared to my extended length racquets, rallies ended up being longer and I won more points from forced errors rather than hitting winners. However I don't think I defended more with Whiteout compared to regular racquets.
Among all ground strokes slices are the weakest. Slices float a little and is really not an offensive shot with this racquet. It's not that important of a shot for me and hence this rating.

Serves 8/10:
This was matter of give and take. My first serves are definitely bigger with extended length racquets. With white out I could not dial in flat T-Serve in deuce court for some reason. But slice, kick serves were better. Slice serve in deuce court was amazing. It took the returner way out of position. Kick serves are also great, kicking and going away from court.
I did not win many free points of flat first serves however I defended my second serve well.

Volleys 7.5/10:
I played about 5 sets of doubles in 2 outings with white out and nothing really stood out from volley perspective. I felt little instability against hard hit shots when I was at net. Hitting volleys deep was easier than trying to hit drop volley. Part of if it's my technique, but I can volley better with my Dunlop CX 200+. For singles I really do not have any issues with volleys.

Serve returns 7.5/10:
On big first serves to my backhand my returns were weaker than normal. I felt racquet twisting in my hand. Some weight at 3 and 9 may help. On second serves though complete 180. I had lot of return winners on second serves.
When my opponent was serving well, it was easy hold for him.

Comments on racquet performance in each area (should be 2-3 sentences minimum)

Power/Control 8/10:

Racquet has just enough power where I don't feel at disadvantage. However I would prefer little more pop from racquet to finish points early. There were many rallies where I had to play 1-2 extra shot(s) where normally with my regular racquets ball would not come back. Control with regards to ball placement (direction, depth) was excellent. Varying of pace was also easy.
Power -- 7.5/10, Control 8.5/10

Top Spin/Slice 8.5/10:
There is no shortage of topspin with this racquet even when using full bed of multi or gut with multi. I was able do get balls landing just inside baseline, or get high bouncing to opponent's backhand or getting ball very low for volley. Normal rally ball also had little more action on the ball compred to my regular racquets. As mentioned earlier my slices were not really offensive, though I do not depend on slices that much (aka not great at it).
Spin -9.5/10, Slice 7.5/10.

Comfort- 8.5/10:
There was no issue with comfort, however I did not use full poly stringjob. Shots hit outside of sweet spot did not cause any comfort issues.

Feel-8.5/10:
Feel is very good, firm without feeling discomfort. There is enough feedback when hitting shots. I knew when I missed sweet spot and when I hit it.

Maneuverability-9/10:
Coming from extended length racquets racquet felt so much easier to wield. Still, maneuverability is excellent. It helped me few times out of akward position due to my bad footwork. I was able to get raqcuet in place easily when I was at net in doubles and shots were hit hard at me.

Stability-8/10:
There is enough stability for 4.0 level. Except for couple of instances (volley against hard shots and hard serves to my OHBH) I felt racquet was stable. I did not have any issues while changing direction/pattern from croscourt to down the line.

General reaction/comments on overall performance:
Overall I really like this racquet. It's jack of all trades while doing couple of things exceedingly well.
Launch angle is high of the stringbed and I had to adjust string tensions to get it where I feel comfortable. I think this racquet will play well with full bed of poly and I plan to try it after Gut breaks.

I played with Pure Strike 16*19 (3rd gen), Tecnifibre TFight RS 305 (although extended by 1/4 or 3/8 inch) last year and I prefer WhiteOut over those.
I like the quality of paint on this racquet. I have hit racquet on ground 4-5 times (for low volley/ accidental drop) and there are no paint chips yet. However paintjob is probably the weakest aspect of this racquet design. It's RBA of paintjobs, there is nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely not exciting.

Overall Solinco has done great job with this racquet and it should be in demo list if someone is looking at control oriented 98", 305 racquets.
I plan to use it couple more months while my shoulder recovers. I am really looking forward to extended length version's release.

Thank you TW and Solinco for opportunity of this playetst. This is my most favorite playtest at TW so far!
Nice review! Since you play (played) with similar racquets, Pure Strike, Dunlop CX 200+, Yonex Ezone 98+ I was curious to see what impression The WO made on you. Do you think an extended length version of the Solinco WhiteOut could temp you to make the change? Would it be in the conversation or still not what you are looking for? While interested in the WO, I have a feeling the WO+ would be something that would definitely temp me.

Yup. As long as swingweight is below 340, preferably around 335. Tennisspin review on YT had extended WhiteOut at 328 swingweight.
Thanks for that! Lately I switch between a Pure Strike 98 16 x19 and a Blade 104 weighted to 11.5 oz.. I like the PS, but miss the extended length, so the WO Plus is something I can wait to try.

I watched the video review from TS on the WhiteOut and WO XTD. Thanks. They all preferred the XTD version. It seems that the XTD version may be a "pro-stock" only or has it been decided that it will be a consumer model. If it is available the specs seem to be perfect for where I am at just now. I will look in to the Dunlop CX 200 + too, but on the higher end of the SW for me.

i haven’t tried to order any yet so no sure about availability ETA but the XTD are listed in their official 2022 pricing guide.

How would you say the weighted butt-cap impacted your impressions? Did it just change specs, feel, spin or? I am intrigued by the the ability to easily customize the WhiteOut and BlackOut. I hope more follow Solinco's lead on this.
It helped to make it a bit whippier, and more in the wheelhouse of the specs I usually play (6-7 pts HL). Overall the added mass didn't significantly change the racuqet, SW was unchanged (322 IIRC) but it gave the feel of more weight based plow and stability on volleys.

I have some head trap doors labeled 'Heavy' which are +10g over a standard trap door, and +6g over the ones that come in new head racuqets. With my MP-L I added these for easy extra weight, and then to match I used varying amounts of putty. Eventually I'll put silicone in each of them. I hope this catches on with more manufacturers also, but the biggest thing is that stock specs need to be pretty on point to use it for matching - or the spec needs to be very light to start (like MP-L at 300g with my target of 313g).

I believe it was stated somewhere on here that they are coming to retail, maybe it was this summer? Don't remember a timeline but that it is happening.

Thanks. Great idea with the trap doors. I do something similar to add a little weight on lighter racquets.

Thank you everyone for posting your comments on this playtest! We have another playtest opportunity we will be posting shortly.

For those asking about the XTD models, they are looking to launch later this year.

Thanks,

I have a production XTD WO. I can post a review at some point, I just need to gather the words.
Seems like Solinco has done a great job with both the WhiteOut and BlackOut standard lengths and pretty much nailed their target which is impressive in a new product launch. What I like is that they brought some innovation to the table too - via weighted butt-caps. So smart, because it makes their product more functional and attractive to a wider audience. The addition of the XTD versions seems to give some people (me) everything they wanted.

After snoflewis completed his playtest of the Whiteout 305, he lent it to me for an extended playtest. I found the Whiteout to play very similarly to the TF40 16/19 and the Pure Strike 16/19 gen 2 and gen 3. It offers better feel than the others. Compared to the TF40, it has a meatier and more substantial ball feel. Compared to the Gen 2 strike, it doesn’t feel as harsh and compared to the Gen 3 strike, it’s not as dampened and muted. The gen 3 strike is overly muted for me. Comfort for me was a mixed bag. It was fine with a full bed of Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.25 however Tier One BlackKnight 17/Ghost wire 17 bothered my elbow after 45 mins of hitting with it so I restrung it with VS Touch 1.30/Prince Tour XP 1.30 at 48/43# (on an electronic cp machine). The gut/poly hybrid played great and I didn’t experience anymore elbow soreness. The Whiteout has plenty of power when I dimed the sweetspot. spin was very good. I enjoyed hitting with the Whiteout and would recommend anyone in the market looking for a 98” to demo one. Since I prefer 100” racquets, it’s not a racquet i would switch to, but it was a racquet I enjoyed hitting with.

A bonus playtest ! Nice. There is a lot of good competition in this class of racquets!

The SW is low on some samples it seems (TW has it listed at 327). Anyone else with a low SW one add weight to the hoop? I'm at 320SW strung right now.

Trying with HGS1.20. It didn't seem like anyone else's review had weight added, but most likely because I don't see SW measurements.

i think it's because the review required playtests with a stock racket and most don't have access to accurate sw measurements. Personally felt a lower sw was better suited for this racket to be able to utilize the rhs for spin

Oops. I didn't see that stipulation in the 1st post. Either I missed it or it's an unwritten rule. I may never be chosen for another play test again.

it's not in the 1st post. it was stated in the email you received when you were selected.

Excerpt copy and pasted from the email:
"VERY IMPORTANT: You are responsible for getting the racquet strung. With the playtest racquet, you will get a set of Hyper-G 16 and Vanquish 16. You can use it or use your own string and tension of choice. Additionally, the racquet will come with two weighted butt caps (+5 and +10 grams). Please hit with the racquet in stock form first and then you can customize with the butt caps or any other weights, etc. If you do any customizations, your review should include both comments in stock and customized form."

@Vicious49,

We understand everyone makes mistakes. Yes, for playtests we ask you hit with the racquet in stock form first and give your comments before you customize it and give your final comments in the email sent out as mad dog1 mentioned. If you are able to go back and add how it played in stock form, we will call it good!

Thanks,

Solinco Blackout 300 (SBO 300)

Received Saturday and was so excited to get the chance to try this out. Currently my main stick is the Babolat Pure Aero plus. I like this frame as it is light and produces a lot of spin along with free power. I also hit with a Yonex HD and D which are significantly heavier, but for a majority I use the PA plus. I strung this frame with Solinco Hyper G 17 @ 42pds. This has been my setup for some time and I wanted to keep things the same. As pictured I have strips of lead tape at 3 and 9 on my PA plus. The first 15 minutes I used the same setup with the SBO 300 but I thought it slowed down the head when trying to add spin to the ball. I took off the lead tape and played with it at stock specs and it felt great. I did not have as high as a launch angle as I do with my PA plus but I did get free power and good control. I really liked the slice this frame had, the ball was low and had good bite. Directional control was the same as my PA plus. I did not get the chance to serve or use the added weight packs but plan on trying them soon. The SBO 300 was stable and very comfortable for me. This of course was my first hour with the frame so only time will tell, but I felt like this was a great transition frame and I was right at home hitting without adjustment to my strokes. Pretty much plug and play from the start. I really hope that the extended versions feel the same way! I am grateful to be able to review this stick and thank both Solinco and TW for the opportunity. I think that the strings are very similar to the PA frame as you can see in the picture provided. Stringing the SBO 300 was very easy as well, the grommets have big spacing so the string does not get stuck when pulling. Solinco added the rubber ring at the top of the grip which I like to use and not use tape to secure the overgrip.

Current specs strung and a Solinco overgrip are.
11.3 oz and 32.45 balance point which is pretty close to spec. From reading the other post, QC has been really good and this could set them apart on the market. Will update as I get more time on court.

have you had a chance to try Lynx Tour in the Blackout yet? Hyper G 1.25/V-Pro 1.28 had ~6 hours on it and the Hyper G mains were close to snapping and the V-Pro crosses were pretty flat as well so i just cut it out. It played pretty well, just didn't last as long. I had previously tried a full bed of LT 1.30. This time I'm going to go with LT 1.25 champagne/LT 1.30 orange at 47/46#.

Unfortunately I have not been able to try Lynx Tour yet. It is on my list of string to tryout. Another string I was researching was Ultra Cable form Weiss Cannon as it has a ton of spin potential. I have a soft spot for Hyper G17, just my go to everyday string. Has been for about 4-5 years, and haven't quite found any string that has been able to knock it off the mountain yet. Yonex PT Rev (purple) was a really nice string and I think the color would look awesome in the BO 300.

Hyper G mains don’t notch and snap as quickly if you cross it with a round poly. Even less notching with a 1.30 round poly. Highly recommend LT. I think it’s a helluva string.

Since I started using a round poly for my crosses, I very seldom break the shaped mains anymore and get longer string life in general.

Lynx Tour champagne 1.25/Lynx Tour orange 1.30 @ 47/46# this time in the Blackout 300. This is seems like the best setup so far. Takes about 15 mins to settle in and after that, it’s really good. The amount of action it can put on the ball is excellent. Feel is a little livelier than the full bed of Lynx Tour orange 1.30. I’ve now spent 30+ hours with the Blackout 300 and it’s just so so good. A very special racquet because the weight distribution and the way it swings just feels right and it puts some funk on the ball that neither my PD12 and PD15 does. The more time I play with it, the more I think I’m going to switch to it because the retail price is lower than the other big brands and Solinco has made grommets readily available for it.

I was finally able to land a BO..it's due in tomorrow.. looking forward to comparing it to my recent gem of a find.. Dunlop FX500..
I often tried to like the PD/PA but never could make them work for me..
Nor my wrist couldn't either..
I am glad to see that others in this segment are finally offering equal if not better than the PD/PA..
Good times...

PD are goats and have many manufacturers aiming to meet or top... but so many fail..
I too was shocked when I 1st hit with the FX500..
I am like...a PD style racket that I can use and enjoy without issues..
I wasn't a fan of the SX 300... prefer the PA..
My only wish for the PD is that it would have a flex point in any area of it's length.. it's rigid the whole 27 inches..
