Tennis writer exposes blatant favoritism and conflicts of interest in Australia Open

I don't have beef with Federer here but what the Australian Open did to the women in the final is disgusting. Halep ended up in hospital. They wouldn't shut the roof for the women but the men get it closed? Pathetic.

I would be pretty confident in saying that they closed the roof due to what happened to Halep.

Lol @ insinuating that the heat policy is somehow “sexist” xD

I think it needs looking at for sure, but don’t use it to create sexism where it doesn’t exist
Pull your head out of your ass, i'm not trying to create sexism or even saying that the policy is sexist. I'm saying the treatment was **** poor. Women play in the heat which results in the world number 1 ending up in hospital, but the men get to play with the roof closed. Pretty bad.

Surely even someone as hateful as you can see that the women weren't treated properly.

The decision is made with a wet bulb thermometer.
If that reads over 32.5oC, roof is closed.

There is no disparity whatsoever between how the two genders are treated. It's irrelevant.

And a typical feminist response. I’m “hateful”

You’re seeking to make gender an issue, as usual.
If you had any idea how the heat policy worked, you’d know why the roof was left open. I don’t see you crying about Djokovic and Monfils having to play in 42 degree heat...

There isn't. Fed preferred an open roof and he said as much in his post-match interview. He thought the heat could bother Cilic more than it would him as the match progressed. However, upon arrival, he and Cilic were both notified that there was a possibility that the roof would be closed.

Federer chose to practice indoors and Cilic chose to do otherwise. Federer said that he was getting himself mentally ready to deal with either situation.

When the wet bulb test came our , both participants were informed that the roof would be closed, much to Federer's chagrin. He took it on the chin and came our firing.
Exactly. I would have preferred an open roof for Federer against Cilic every time.
This decision hindered Fed if anything. That said, it was the correct decision as per their rules. No bias.

Funny, it was 42 degrees for Novak/Monfils yet they played in the heat. Perhaps the wet bulb temp isn't the way to go and that way players don't end up hospitalized. Sound good hey?

Thanks for making my point for me bud! :D Absurd Novak/Monfils played in that heat which was hotter than Cilic/Fed but because of wet bulb temp they get it shut.

Maybe a new heat rule should be implemented, cause this one ended up causing widespread condemnation.

Considering the weather was hotter at several other matches than it was for the final, it's a bit odd. Is it what their rules say? Yep, I never said they broke rules. I just said it was disgusting and a terrible look that their actions resulted in the then world number 1 going to hospital.

1. I didn’t make your point for you

2. You finally stopped speaking in gendered terms. I guess I got my way in the end. :D

That's a different question which may merit looking at for next year. Novak and Monfils played because the wet bulb temperature was below 32.5, so the rules have been followed all the way through here. My point was only that it has nothing to do with their gender.

You don’t even live in Melbourne. It was practically unbearable yesterday due to the combination of temp and humidity. Even more unbearable than the dry 42°c day, funnily enough.

Oh would you just shut up? You're insufferable. Nobody hates misogyy more than I do. That isn't the case here, though. Just shut the f up and stop with your usual agenda.

This should be simply enough. It passed the wet bulb test and that' why it was closed. It hadn't for the women's final and that's why it stayed open. Stop your nonsense and stop insinuating there's sexism in play like you do in EVERY SINGLE CASE.

If it were in any way sexist, all of us would stand out and stand with you and condemn the ATP. There isn't any room for that in today's world. This, though, is ridiculous. Jesus Christ you're just insufferable.

Oh my ****ing god, I said the treatment of the women's final was **** poor and noted that the men had a closed roof while the women didn't. I then had a bunch of people jump down my throat. I'm out, you all can get triggered at my words, i'm so sorry I hated seeing a woman end up in hospital due to the treatment of the organisers. I'm so sorry that you're more annoyed at what I said then the fact Halep was hospitalized.

Seems the public outcry was pretty severe too. Not a great look for tennis and the tournament. But yeah, be naive and stick to the "it's in the rules" card. I'm sure Halep was fine with that when she spent hours in hospital.

CHRIST.

It’s horrible that Halep had to go to hospital but being a feminist you just have to make it a gender issue.

As others have pointed our,you knew what you were doing when you went on about how "the women weren't treated fairly."
Stop playing the innocence card. We all know you're agenda. Nobody is targeting the women on tour. Atleast not in this case. So, stop. Just pipe down and stop. You're downright annoying.

To say it's favoritism is to say a closed roof favors one player vs another.

The closing of roof exerts the same type of condition onto both players.

As a professional tennis player, you have to train yourself to prepare for either type of playing conditions, whether it's outdoor or indoor.

I do think heat bulb rule could use some flexibility so I see your point.

Problem is, you can't always please everyone. Organizers could have taken into account the grueling Halep-Kerber SF and closed the roof but then maybe Wozniacki wouldn't like that because she wouldn't be able to reap rewards of winning her SF in routine fashion.

Keep putting words in my mouth, it's REALLY working well. Targetting the tour? Not at all what I was saying. Great job Feeny.

Want to talk about annoying? Have a look at what you are all doing. According to Vapor i'm now commenting on men in wars because i'm sad to see Halep end up in hospital. Real nice.

Thank you for recognizing my point. Wet bulb is the current policy, yes. Has it been an issue all tournament with other matches like Monfils/Novak? Yes. The temperature was far hotter at other matches than the mens final but due to wet bulb, they were forced to play outside. Current rule is something being questioned.

Sunday was hotter and more humid than Saturday, that's why the roof was closed. And it was probably done more for the high profile ticket holders than it was the players. The Aussie Open knows what's good business and Sunday night was hot. Saturday night was far more normal by Melb standards for January.

Yeah Saturday night wasn’t even hot. Me and all my mates were outside all day. It started to cool down by mid afternoon.

Sunday was SIGNIFICANTLY hotter

Roger Federer also has more connections with the Australian Open than most others. His management company, TEAM8, was in association with Tennis Australia in creating the Laver Cup. Tennis Australia being the governing body of the Australian Open with CEO Craig Tiley being the director of the grand slam. This could have possibly led to favouritism for the six-time champion due to a conflict of interests. No wonder John McEnroe joked, “What’s the difference between privilege and blatant cheating?”

Also very interesting what cilic said. He was practicing w no roof.

Id say its cheating.

Can't tennis fans go one goddamn post without calling another fanbase salty, ******** or butthurt?

Seriously if you can't find rational arguments to add to the discussion, do quality posters a favour and **** the hell off.
Hahahaha its so childish. If someone going against you and using that kind of "arguments" as they do, its under puberty age thing to do.

Haters in ruins as expected.

Fact: Cilic said he was offered a choice to warm up indoors but he declined because he had already made arrangements. According to him, he played on the same court and practiced on the same court so he wanted to keep things the same (maybe some sort of superstition).

Both players were informed about the possibility of playing indoors.

The AO is sponsored by KIA one of Nadal's sponsors and TA also have an agreement with Nadal's academy. I don't see how Federer's connection with TA is anymore "cheating" than Nadal's.

Fact: Federer has always had the same or similar schedule. Haters had no problem when Federer played those night matches before facing their favorites. The difference now is Federer is winning and their favs are losing so they've become whiny, butthurt fans.

Suck it up haters!

Actually in here fed fans have showed that previous years, beside last two years, that fed played like the others daytime matches.
Its lately Fed got all this privileges.
Is it privileges or is it cheating?
Thats up to each one of us to decide what we think of it.

So the heat apparently only affects Federer's biggest threats and not who they played? Obviously del Potro would have been a massive threat to Federer after he looked like a sloth against Berdych, who is 3 years older. Not to mention Goffin lost to freakin 56 year old Benneteau, a guy he should have grinded down in the heat 10/10 times. Write of the article loses all credibility right there.

And I'm sure that mental mess Cilic sure would have been thriving in the heat. Not to mention that they clearly have a metric based on heat AND humidity (which is worse than heat) that was satisfied for the final and not for the other days. But yeah, EXPOSED. Joke of an article. The 55 year old man wins a 20th major and they still have nothing better to do.

Maybe I should write an article about how Wimbledon is clearly biased against Federer because they never play him court 1 which suits him more because the grass is faster there. Would have about as much basis in logic and facts as this piece of crap.
The advantages/disadvantages of playing in the heat aren't down to one match, or don't come down to age per se. There's huge variety in the thermoregulation of people. Playing in the scorching heat puts way more stress on the body and it's way harder to recover from. This is way more complicated than "Fed can play in the heat too, that's not the problem." The huge problem is that matches are being decided on qualities that are highly individual and genetic, have almost nothing to do with tennis, and that the exposure to this isn't put on all players. The fact that. Sure in the heat courts get faster, but playing in an oven will make it invariably harder to keep it up physically on the next days. Same goes for the guys who eliminated Federer's main threats and who were seen as no problem for Federer. They too suffered more in the heat than Federer, simply cause they actually played in it.

I said my piece just like you said yours. No need to quote me. I'm not only talking about the AO. All the tournaments generally. Federer played a very late SF in Shanghai because the organizers asked him. Didn't see VB complain about the schedule. That's just one example.

People should get their facts straight instead of spewing crap about cheating. Both Federer's and Cilic's interviews are available for anyone who's interested in knowing the truth and not just hating.

My 2 cents. No need to quote me or @ me again.

Cheating is not sanctioned by the officials. "Privilege", as is being described here, is.

Also for the last time, having the roof closed would have helped Cilic more than Federer.
As cilic said,.it didnt help him at all.

http://www.news.com.au/sport/tennis...d/news-story/2ef512bbe7080c3ff9826e8420a0876d

“Throughout the tournament I played all my matches outdoors, also preparing a hot day, 38 degrees.”
“Then first match for the final to play with the roof closed, it’s difficult.

“I have to say that decision could it have been different.

“I think that it was just little bit difficult to adjust, especially the beginning of the match. With the roof closed, it was way, way cooler than I expected.

“That was very, very difficult, especially for the final to, you know, be in that kind of a situation.”
“Well, no, they didn’t ask me. They just came to me to tell me that they are thinking about decision, and they going to make the final decision just around 7pm, just slightly before the match,” he said.

“I didn’t mind to have roof closed, but it was a huge difference in temperature from having outside 38c, then when you came in, it was like 23, 4, I don’t know. It was way cooler than I expected.”

“Just looking at my own side, I didn’t feel those conditions before,” Cilic said.

“I had a slow start in the match, losing straightaway my two service games, then catching up most of the time ... I’m saying it was very different than what we’ve played outdoor.

At Eastbourne last year, all Djokovic's opponents played two matches a day because of the rain. There's was no uproar from nolefam. They were busy enjoying the privileges. But they've been crying blue murder about Federer's schedule.

This writer is part of #nolefam as far as I am aware. The amount of whining is ludicrous. Where was the outcry when Federer played the second SF at the WTF in 2014/2015?
