In other words, the UTR business model. If USTA was smart, they'd let people buy an "enhanced membership" and let them view dynamic ratings.

There is no question this information has value for many members. Whether they should simply allow paying members to see it and thus add more value to the current membership or charge extra is a separate issue. I am a fan of transparency so think it would be good if we all understood the rating system and knew how it rated each of our matches. I don’t really care that a few crack pots would then try to throw a few games to win nationals. If USTA was smart, they'd let people buy an "enhanced membership" and let them view dynamic ratings.
Agreed. I'd prefer it was free and transparent; I was just speaking from the business perspective. There is no question this information has value for many members. I don't think people knowing their UTR has deterred people from playing... the only caveat is that some ratings seem to be wildly derived. In other words, the UTR business model.

But, I would not let people have unlimited access... I would do something along the lines of you can perform X# of rating checks per month for your enhanced membership... or
something like you can only see ratings on the 1st-3rd of each month... do it netflix style so people can't check a bunch of ratings and then cancel their enhanced membership...
Why does anybody care who runs it?Who runs TR? Why is it such a secret and how can nobody have figured out who runs it yet?
took like 5 minutes of sleuthing to determine the following: tennisrecord.com is owned by a company called Virtual Sports in Maryville, TN. They appear to be the owners of a website called HorseRaceGame.com which is virtual/fantasy horse racing, but involves real money. Why they have tennisrecord? who knows, maybe there are lots of people betting on recreational tennis matches!Who runs TR? Why is it such a secret and how can nobody have figured out who runs it yet?

I think usta dislikes that people have a fairly accurate outlet for folks to view their tennis rating; a rating system based on a similar rating scale as their own. Obviously, some calculations might carry slightly different weight from usta calculations (playoff, tournament, sectionals, nationals etc) but all in all for the average league player, it’s a fairly accurate rating system. Usta will never publish their ratings.I tend to doubt there really is a big animosity between USTA and TR. Someone said USTA sued them. If that is true then I would like to know the case number and where the suit was filed.
If USTA wanted to shut it down they could simply publish their own data. I would not be surprised if people with pull with USTA run TR.

It was 100% accurate for both of my teams last year in predicting bumps. Ha.Whenever I attend captains’ meetings with participants from USTA higher up than the local league coordinator there is always some discussion of TennisRecord. They tell us that people are using the inaccurate ratings on the site to create lineups and determine who can join teams, and they encourage us to tell our players to avoid the site.
Yeah I noticed the same thing, which is why I jumped to this thread lol.Last TR update for me was over a month ago. Assuming the same for everyone else?
I don't think this is the primary source of income for whomever runs TR. So sometimes updates can lag. Same for TLS.I hope TR folks are vacationing or revamping their website/algorithm and not halting activities in response to a USTA edict.
I did see TLS got around to completing its 2023 ratings a couple weeks ago.
Sorry, maybe this is a dumb question - but what is TLS?I don't think this is the primary source of income for whomever runs TR. So sometimes updates can lag. Same for TLS.
Tennis league stats. Consult the googles and you will find it.Sorry, maybe this is a dumb question - but what is TLS?
Another plus for TR. I didn’t play any men’s usta last year, only mixed. I still have both a men’s rating (black) and a mixed rating (red) on TR. But according TLS, I no longer exist.I hope TR folks are vacationing or revamping their website/algorithm and not halting activities in response to a USTA edict.

Haha yeah I just looked it up - reminds me of forms I used to create in the 90s for fun. Says that data is updated as of March 27th of 2024, but no options to look at 2024 result calcs. The formatting of TLS is terrible. And they are missing matches and haven’t even updated ratings yet for 2024.
Without you sharing your reasons I can't say. I highly doubt the person running it is currently associated with USTA. But I would not be surprised if someone involved in TR was involved with USTA at a decently high level - one where he had access to the dynamic ratings. I think USTA was happy to see it on a certain level.I have good reason to believe the USTA is not fond of TR and the person running TR is not associated with the USTA. Whether they were sued or not I have no clue.
Person running it must be exposed and revealed as to Who it is........... its probably AI robotWithout you sharing your reasons I can't say. Was it a success? Does TR get anything close to the traffic as the official Tennis link website? If it is getting close to the same traffic I would think anyone with common sense at USTA would realize the members have a desire to parse the very broad levels USTA assigns.
It seems to go haywire with new players. And when that causes it to predict a double bump that issue can stick and effect others. I do think I could predict some matches better then it can - but I haven’t tested it. But after the dust settles it is a decent rating system for most players. It requires something like intentional stupidly for any Elo or Glicko rating system to not do a decent job. When I captained for several years, I didn’t think TennisRecord gave ratings that judged my own players accurately either and it did not match internal team rankings we had based on scores from our practices and matches - plus we had different rankings for singles and doubles. I also didn’t think it was that good at rating opponents we played regularly based on who what we thought the stronger players were. So, I was not surprised when it performed poorly in predicting bumps in our region.
I feel like it does not do a good job rating partners of new USTA players and it rates new players too high and partners too low when they do well in matches. This seems to skew the ratings of many players over time.
I ended 3.98 last year and got bumped to 4.5Yeah I noticed the same thing, which is why I jumped to this thread lol.
For what it's worth, I too see it as a great valuable tool, and it does seem to predict fairly accurately if someone is going to get bumped or not. I ended last year at 3.99, and even though I thought I'd get bumped (and there were players I beat who did), I didn't get bumped to 4.5, so extremely precise in my case lol.
No, I think towards the end of the year, before final ratings on Dec 1, there can be a gap (I think last year it was like a month plus in Oct/Nov time frame)Is this the longest it’s gone without updating?
Maybe TR guy is planning an update to the suckometer graphic design? Is this the longest it’s gone without updating?
I think that outside of the year end ratings this is one of the longest gaps though. No, I think towards the end of the year, before final ratings on Dec 1, there can be a gap (I think last year it was like a month plus in Oct/Nov time frame)
The first 3 decimal places are usually spot on. The 4th one can be off a bit.TR says I am a low 3.0 female, are we sure it's that accurate?
It seems to be hit or miss w/ tournaments. I found my doubles tournament there but none of my singles matches... I don't believe I've seen any fast 4 tournament results.Glad it's not just me. On a related note, does TR include fast-four tournament matches?
Let this thread serve as the petition to revive it.I am hearing that TR is officially over. Unsure of the reason, but it’s done.
That’s unfortunate if true. You would think it’s popular and well developed enough that the developer could find a buyer for it. It probably wouldn’t sell for much, but better than nothing.I am hearing that TR is officially over. Unsure of the reason, but it’s done.
I wonder why they just don't sell it? There are plenty of people that could monetize it.I am hearing from my alter ego, that TR is officially just on break and it'll be back soon.
If they charge for it, I'd rather order reports from schmke. LOL.I wonder why they just don't sell it? There are plenty of people that could monetize it.
