tennisrecord.com messed up?

This is good stuff: a friend is listed as correctly having played Men's 4.5 singles but the accompanying result is Women's 4.0 doubles.

The problem appears to be limited to tournaments.

I checked my tennisrecord.com entry and it has a bunch of matches I didn't play with people I don't know. Anyone else see the same thing?
Lol, yep check out the thread TLS ratings vs. TennisRecord. Conversation has turned to this current issue. One of my Mens Open Singles tournament matches had turned into a Canadian dubs match against two 3.0 women. The scores are correct however the opponents are all a clusterf#ck.

USTA doesn’t take into account Open tournament matches into their ratings so TennisRecord will definitely differ if they are pulling those
I haven’t heard this. Is it nationwide or section by section? Obviously some open players don’t have usta ratings but I assumed matches between rated players in a sanctioned tournament counted (if the section counts tournament matches). May I ask the source of your info?

I believe nationwide. You answered your own question in your comment. If they did, after winning a sanctioned Open tournament (playing 3 plus matches) a man or woman wouldn’t still be rated “0.0” on TennisLink. Those of us who who have ratings and play Open have our ratings because we also play USTA League. We cross paths with 0.0 players enough in draws that they certainly would be rated by years end if Open tournaments were taken into consideration. Depending on section, sanctioned NTRP tournaments are taken into consideration in the YE ratings per USTA website. You can read about it under the common ratings questions on their homepage.

Yea, I posted about this a while back. They are scraping tournament data now but there's obviously bugs.

Mine has mostly been fixed. All my opponents are now correctly identified from tournament play, but there are several matches where it doesn't list my partner. These are semi-final matches. I think the S that stands for Semi-Final is making the script think it's a singles match.

The legend at the bottom of the page shows S is for self or unrated player. Even the ones that show a match score are not counted for rating even though my section counts tournament results.

I know that, but that's not what I'm talking about. In the Court column of your history, it lists D1 D2 S1 S2 etc... for league play. For tournament play, it lists the round: 16, Q, S, F etc... In the Semi-final matches for me, my partner is not listed because, I think, it's reading the S in that column as if I played singles. It's just a bug.

There is a player in my area who generated a 2019 5.0 T rating per tennislink. He played 9.5, but he only played in the Open division in tournaments in 2019. He selfrated 5.0 in 2015 but has only played mixed, combo, and tourneys (always in the Open division) since. @schmke Any ideas? I'll send you this guy's name privately if you're interested.

Looks like TR has updated people's ratings. Mine went from a 3.78 to a 4.01. No results since ratings came out have been entered for me. I guess they've tweaked their formula enough and will start updating results now.

eta: Scratch that. It appears no formula tweaking was involved. Anyone who was bumped up from 4.0 to 4.5 whether they were able appeal back down or not seem to be listed as 4.01 now.

Yeah, mine went up as well ... with no new matches being posted after 11/4/19 ..... I have 12 matches that have been played since then!
I did not get bumped but TR just did an adjustment up ... but only up .07

ETA: everyone that TR had projected to be bumped DOWN from my 4.0 team and remained 4.0C are all now 3.51 .... some had been as low as 3.30 on TR before the adjustment

I went from just above the cutoff to just below...I wasn’t bumped. Funny to see the people that were 0.20 below me now jump up to match their new rating.

Mine went down despite not having played a match. Now I'm sad.

I was at 4.04 before the update and now I'm at 4.07. Maybe because it already had me above 4.0 when I got bumped, it didn't have to arbitrarily move me from 3.xx to 4.01.

They have been doing this adjustment for bumps/non-bumps that they missed for years. I think they might also attempt to retrofit the 2019 match ratings to the new year end ratings, which would account for changes in others' ratings.

Ok so I was bumped to 4.0 but appealed back down to 3.5 and am 3.5 A. TR apparently thinks I was bumped down to 3.0 and had to appeal back up to 3.5, as they reset my rating to 3.00.

So now they’re around .5 off for me. That’s also going to mess up their ratings calculations for all my opponents and doubles partners.

Weird, I remember they had a problem last year where appeals were always sent to the bottom of their new level, but they fixed it with respect to last year’s ratings. I guess however they did it, it didn’t persist into handling this year automatically.

So here is my theory, I'm open to someone showing me that I'm wrong. But I think that TR can't tell if someone was actually bumped up or bumped down, if they ended up back at their previous level with an A next to them and they didn't capture before the appeal. A couple other people that I know that bumped to 4.0 but appealed back down to 3.5 have been adjusted to the top of the level, but those people where already estimated to be closer to 4.0 than 3.0

In my case, since they were already off by more than half a level and had me estimated at below a 3.20, they figured it was more likely that I was bumped down and appealed back up than vice versa.

In reality they were just off on my rating by over half a level, and now through another bad assumption, are wrong by a whopping whole rating level. Kinda makes the whole site that much closer to useless, at least for me.

For me, it looks like they added some 2020 results but have not updated with the last couple matches from the end of 2019. Weird.

Looks like they just pulled all my 2020 season matches (we do early start here, so I’ve been playing since October) but haven’t recalculated ratings yet.

I am guessing this is a timing thing ..... if you appealed the same day the ratings came out and went back to 3.5A .... they captured after the ratings came out the next day ... so if you had already appealed they would not have seen it, they would only have seen the A not the 4.0C before you appealed.

Then just about a week ago they did a bandaid of some sort for where they missed their projections ... people who they thought would bump down but didn't all got put .01 into the rating level (e.g. a previous year 3.5C that they had at 2.89 but did not get bumped down by USTA then got replaced at 3.01)

They sure aren't perfect, but I think in general they have people ranked correctly, even if the actual number is not accurate.

But having one person like yourself who is likely top of the level with a number attached that is bottom of the level is going to throw a wrench into the system that will have long lasting (and spreading) ramifications as you have said.

For me they did just scrape the 2 matches I have played in 2020 ..... but did not scrape the 11 matches post ratings that I played in 2019 .... so our entire district will have many missing matches which means that they will be even further from USTA figures than they already were.

All that said, they are still very useful for scouting and I still think they get player rankings just about right.
