Tension calibrator question

I noticed in the picture that when using the tension calibrator, they use it by threading it through the racquet. I have always just done it without a racquet and just clamped one end of the string attached to the calibrator and put the other end of the string on the other side of the calibrator in the tensioner and pulled tension to check it. I check it at 40 55 and 70 lbs. Is this way wrong. If it is could someone please tell me in detail the correct way to use a tension calibrator. I would thing that threading it through a racquet and tying a knot would result in the knot being pulled through the grommet when higher tensions are pulled.

The reason the callibrator is used in a frame is that it's most "realistic" this way. If you clamp it straight off and use it in this fashion, you're not factoring in the friction from a very quick 180 degree bend, this can affect tension. It makes sense to test the tensioner in a way that you'll actually be using it.

The difference probably won't be major, so i wouldn't worry about it too much. I always check with a frame mounted, and i haven't compared it to without.

As far as testing methods go, my callibrator said to use 60 lbs as a reference tension and check from there. I use 60 to give it my official check, and i use my other weights as sort of a "guide." I figure since the callibrator is spring loaded, the resulting reading won't exactly be linear or exact. I test at 60 and go up and down in +/- 5 increments just to check. Of course, i hardly ever check my machine since it's a dropweight.
