Texas Men's 4.0 18+ Sectionals - Aug. 14-16

You and LL were clutch this weekend. Stinks you had to default that singles line. Hope you guys can regroup and get em next year
Agreed. Y'all and Lepoutre/Von Gastel on the Austin team were the best that we faced or even saw all weekend. I'd have loved to see you play each other.

First time at sectionals, I thought the competition was great but i was surprised at the number of older guys. I figured 4.0 would be mostly guys in their 20s and 30s. Waco was probably the toughest team in our flight, and they even had 2 of their top guys out. Unfortunately, our line 2 singles guy had to leave for family reasons and couldn't play Saturday, which made us statistically unable to advance to the semis. I had a ton of fun and there's always next year!
Thanks for the love raven. You guys were also really solid, all five lines. Too bad we were both missing some key players. Some of the results might have been better. But, like you said, there's always next year.

Tough matches in the 4.5 semis today, Wild Dallas squeaked by Houston 3-2, they were down a match point in the deciding doubles match and one guy ripped a down the line backhand that was amazing. They ended up winning like 12-10. Austin edged out Beaumont 3-2, both singles went to third set breakers with the deciding match at #1, very very close.
Hey Tatu, I'm actually the co-captain of Houston. We had three match points in that doubles line, and yes, that backhand down the line was amazingly clutch. Must have cleared the net by an inch and found its way on the line. In our other doubles line that could have decided it, one of our players had a horrible cramp before starting the super tie breaker and cramped severely again at 7-7.

Heartbreaking loss as it was my first season captaining. We had a great match vs your team Wild Austin, and were surprised to hear SETX lost after hearing how many former/current Lamar players they had. Judging by the strength of Austin/SETX, I don't know if we really could have won anyway. Le did say to us he thought Wild Austin/Austin were equally matched and we'd have a chance in the finals, but I'm not so sure after seeing the results.

Yeah it was so close, you guys had a great run and beat us in a tight match, congrats. I think Austin was just too deep, and this was their year to finally break through. Talked to RB for a bit while watching you and it sounds like he's putting together another powerhouse team for next year, so it's good that Austin snuck by SE Texas this year. By the way, all the guys on your team were great to play against, very fair and good sports.

I know JF is planning something big. Do him and RB work together on that?

I actually found that with all of the teams this year! As much as I'm not a fan of Austin's captain, all of the players were very great to deal with.

Thanks croc, our #1 line said that team was pretty stout and weren't missing any balls. You were on the Waco team?

Yep, we had our singles line retire after you guys won your doubles line. Even if he won his singles, we were 3-2, tied with Austin, but they beat us head to head, so they advance. Of course, there was no guarantee he could hang on and win. Your guy didn't look a bit tired and was hitting a lot of balls.

So you just had him retire to save his rating?

No, we encouraged him to retire to save his health. He's over 50, it was 100 degrees, he was getting tired, in his second match of the day in a meaningless outcome. Had his match been the decider, we would have encouraged him to continue, provided he wasn't endangering himself.:)

Man my team is going to have to improve a lot to have a shot at winning sectionals next year.
We just absolutely breeze through our local league but got destroyed in sectionals.

Got back from the doctor yesterday and received the diagnosis on my shoulder. I've been playing with a partially torn rotator cuff since May, LOL. Not smart.
He also said my right shoulder is slightly out of alignment and after doing a bunch of movement and strength tests thinks its because I've been playing this whole time and all the other muscles are trying to compensate for the rotator cuff.
So some tendinitis and a slightly torn rotator cuff will keep me out for the next month.
I'll be going to some physical therapy and doing lots of cardio in the mean time.

Gotta make sure next year I show up healthy. Plus I have 2 more sectional playoffs to attend in October and hopefully qualify for the PokeJoe masters in Austin.

Anyone going to 4.0 Texas Sectionals this year? Maybe we can get together and complain about the heat, complain about the sandbaggers, or just enjoy some refreshments!

One of the USTA people during the Playoff match said that You will get a "Benchmark" rating at the end of the year if you played in the Playoff match no matter what win or lose. Is this true ??

There are no more "B" ratings. You simply won't see them anymore. Everyone just has a "C". But the same benchmark calculations are still done after Nationals and that is likely what they were referring to. Read my blog, I wrote about it a long time ago ;-)

wow,, that sucks. does that mean You have to go to the Nationals to get the B rating ?? That makes NO sense. cause most of the guys that go to the nationals are just Bumped up to higher level....lol

You still get a "B" rating if you go to the playoffs but it just doesn't show up in tennislink as a B. It's listed as a C rating

You had to play CM first match ? He's more like a 5.5 than a 4.5 but you played him tough, congrats.
I had a chance with him serving at 4 all 15-40 in the first ... couldn't pull it out.

He wasn't playing 100% though

if you play in the playoffs but have a bad match, and you lose badly because you were playing with very weak partner, does that hurt your ratings ? and we also played against 2 guys that are going to be bumped up next year as well. I had do a favor for my captain and had to play with a guy that was really weak and really didn't belong in our division.

Depends on how low of a rating he was.

Last year I played a match with a weak partner and lost 1,0 and my rating went up according to schmke.

He and his partner were supposed to lose 0 & 0. They did better than expected.
LOL,, That is so odd,,,,, how does computer think you should lose 0 , 0 if you are in the same division ? Aren't the guys supposed to be all kind of similar level ?? LOL

It’s hot as balls here, I played 3.5 city 2 weekends ago and a tournament last weekend. I was wiped out after my matches each day. Drink lots of fluid and find shade if you can, stay safe.

LOL I can't ever remember Dallas and Houston not being the teams to beat.
Houston usually has the best teams out there and Dallas has to do some serious recruiting/sandbagging to keep up.

I've made it to sectionals from Fort Worth 1 time and we were pummeled.
You have to file complaints with National USTA center officials. That kind of corruption must not go unchecked. USA prides itself on fairness and justice for all sports. Those teams out of Dallas and Houston must be warned that if they keep that up, they will be banned from USTA play

Wow I noticed Abilene won the 4.5's after finishing behind Dallas in pool play and getting the 4th place sport into the semis, was that a surprise ?

Abilene was strong all weekend. They were missing some guys Saturday who were there again Sunday. The real surprise came this morning when 4 guys were DQ'd, sending San Antonio to Nationals.

I'm not disputing this, but TennisLink doesn't show the DQ's or match reversal (yet?), and the check for self-rate DQ's normally happens same day at the event and not the next day. Do you know if these were self-rate DQ's or some other administrative DQ?

They did have a bunch of self-rates so it certainly could have been that, although I'm surprised it would have been that many. And administrative DQ's usually require whatever grievance to have been filed before the event.
