Sectionals in Texas start this weekend in Dallas. 4.0-Open level play this weekend and 2.5-3.5 play next weekend. If you are going or know anyone that is then you can discuss, update and post any predictions here. Good luck to everyone(except those playing against me:twisted:).

Thanks! I don't think I'll have a video camera with me but if I can get ahold of one I'll try to get some vids

Hey nocab.. you can borrow my old(er) Sony camera if you want. I've got an extended battery, plus the original battery, and I think 2 or 3 mini dvcs.

If you are interested, let me know and we'll figure it out.

4.5 - NOHO
5.0 - San Antonio
Open - Austin

5.0 pick is a shot in the dark. I think the 4.5 & Open picks are layups.

Austin doesn't have an open team this year. They have a 5.5 team, which I think is the same team they had last year in the open division.

NOHO had a good start in 4.5 winning both matches 3-2. Looks like Waco and Dallas both had strong starts in their brackets as well.

San Antonio lost a close match in 5.0 that was decided by a 3rd set tiebreak in line 2 doubles, it looks like it could have gone either way.

5.5 and open don't start until tomorrow.

Ah yes, I was thinking of 5.5 Austin. The team that has Tres Davis as a 5.5 (Ha!). Open isn't until next week.

NOHO is 2-0 w/o their best player.

Vik,
How can a player who held an ATP ranking last year be rated as a 5.5 and in his 20's.

Because Tres does not play atp anymore...what kind of competition do you want him to play? there is nothing to play in the states for players like tres that still want to play, but dont want to grind out the tour anymore.

Then there are people like you whining on a message board about it, hahahah whish the USTA would wake up and have some kind of overhaul of the current system here. No wait, that would be asking too much. lol

USTA has him listed at 5.5 and from what I can tell, not because of injury.
Please tell me how they could rate him 5.5.

Sure there is, Opens and 5.5/Open leagues.

Then there are people like you whining on a message board about it,
I could care less. I just think the ratings are a joke.

Just follow their rules and it would be fine.

Um, there is the Open division. There are 3 Open teams at sectionals next week. Are you always this sensitive:oops:? I could care less since it doesn't affect me. But I think it's funny that he was able to get a 5.5 rating.

I heard there was a 3.5/4.0 captain trying to recruit you guys today out at the high school. Talk of you guys made it all the way out to south lake where I was playing. Maybe you can appeal, lie and cheat and get a rating of 2.0 and win world champions for him lol. I bet he even asked if you had a rating to see if you could.

The temperature was about 105 all three days, and it definitely played a role. Congrats to the Lubbock 4.0 guys and NoHo 4.5s. Good luck at nationals!

Yeah 5.5 is tough now I see Tres Davis and Graydon Oliver are both 5.5, expect in next 2-3 years they will be playing on a 4.5 team at the rate many of the captains play the system. Might as well scrap the guidelines because they are not being followed nor enforced.

Only got 1 prediction correct. NOHO 4.5 and their 3 Div I players eek out a 3-2 win in the finals.

Houston takes 5.0 and Open. FW wins 5.5 (I guess Davis couldn't play two lines at a time....)

Mike - that's funny. I have to find a new place sat. mornings. Those guys take over the place and make it a social event while we're sandwiched in between them. Nice people, just a different mindset. Think i'll be heading to CV from now on.

I'm on the 4.0 Lubbock team that won. I got butt kicked hard yesterday by a guy that hasn't lost but 1 match all year. We pulled through though. It's my first time to sectionals too. Awesome. I can't wait. Congrats to everyone that was there.

I got blown off the court in my 4.5 doubles match against Abilene, two guys who were serving bombs. This is the first year that I've come to the realization that I should be playing 4.0. Won a doubles match the next day against Ft. Worth but it was a meaningless match.

If you played during the season... and made it to sectionals... then you are probably at the right rating.

Tyler, please email me through my profile. I've got some tips to share about nationals from 2006 to share, and I think the Houston captain from last year would be willing to do the same. We'd love to see you guys rock and roll in Tucson.

Texas Sectionals was a lot of fun. It would have been a lot MORE fun if CrocodileRock had won that singles match against Dallas! LOL

Good luck to everyone at Nationals.

Yes, it would have Hacker. Probably more fun for you than us, since your lead was just about insurmountable at that time. I didn't expect to see their stud player, since it was unnecessary against us, and he might need to rest to play against you, but there he was. Even if we switched the singles, there are two unanswerable questions: Could our other singles guy have won that match? and Could our doubles team have won the match that Dallas retired? Both answers are maybe yes, and maybe no. Good season for you guys anyway, and I hope to see you again next year.

I won't be going, but I'll be babysitting while my wife goes to Dallas this weekend for 3.5 sectionals. I'm hoping to babysit again when she goes to Tucson. :)

I also have some good friends on Houston 5.0 who apparently did quite well.

Hopefully, Edouard doesn't affect play this weekend.

Waco and Houston, respectively. We went to nats in '06, and Houston did last year, though I don't think Hacker was a member of that team yet.

Dallas lost 3-2 in SF to Houston and WC Dallas lost a 3-2 match to Waco that if they won they would have been into the SF instead of Houston.

Tyler,
I just looked up your match on tennislink. That guy you played only played doubles during the season, then when playoffs and sectionals came he whooped up on everyone in singles. Looks like they tried to keep him hidden for awhile. He even played 9.0 with a 4.5 women, instead of a 5.0 and dominated. Congrats on nationals. Good luck!

They also have Graydon Oliver and Jack Brasington rated as 5.5's. Both former tour players. But it's OK because they are playing in the open, riiiight. Jack Brasington beat a 6.0 in straight sets.

This is typical across the board in USTA League play. i.e. players underating their ability is commonplace.

Yeah Nocab. It should have been more competitive than it was. I held and then broke the 1st two games and was playing great. I had a really hard time on the north side of the court with sun. I couldn't get it going with anything I was doing. I had 1-2 df's every service game on that side. He was a better player for sure though. He figured out my biggest weakness fast.......the sharp angled slice to my bh. He hit that well too. If I could keep him back, I usually won the rally with big gs's. Unforunately I couldn't do that. He was too good.

Andy you left out Tres Davis who is also a 5.5.
Imagine if the Jackson captain got ahold of these guys.

I saw him there as well. At this point it's just the way it is and I am living with it. I've come to terms with the system.

Hypothetically, does all this make me a 2.5 or 3.0 now?

Yeah, I'd love to hear stories too.

If anyone attended the banquet, post stories and/or photos. I hear it got pretty wild. :) I heard about it a little from the women, but I'm sure it was filtered.

There was plenty of good tennis and plenty of ringers all weekend. A lot of people were predicting a Dallas vs. Wild Dallas final and they were right. Dallas beat Lubbock 4-1 in their semi and Wild Dallas beat San Antonio 3-2. There was a good Houston vs. Wild Dallas match with both teams undefeated. One of the players from Wild Dallas made 2 very bad line calls in a row and both were immediately overruled by a roving USTA official. It made for an exciting match. The talk of most people that had to face Wild Dallas was that they had a ringer by the name of Glenn Flora. I watched this kid play and he was definitely out of level. Most people were talking about how he could play 4.5. I don't know if that is true but he definitely would destroy a lot of 4.0 singles players. With him, Wild Dallas beat Dallas 3-2 in the final and booked a trip to Tucson for nationals. Unfortunately for them though, Glenn was DQ'd the next day when the USTA ran his scores through the computer. It looks like consistently beating people 6-1, 6-1 at sectionals means you're not a 3.5. Their team still gets to go to nationals, just not with him.

My wife ran into a buzz saw in a 3.5 doubles match. She said her opponents were amazing. An official strolled by and lo and behold, they started shanking everything and serving into the net repeatedly until he left. She was pretty mad and words were exchanged. But overall, they had a great time.

I looked this guy up on tennis link and I have no idea how he got as far as he did without a DQ.

His sectionals scores were
0,5
1,2
1,2
1,3
0,0
1,3

His district playoff scores were
1,0
5,4
3,1
0,1

In playoffs, he dished out 5 Love sets and 4 1 game sets. That is stout. I though after you lost it reversed your score and it looked like th eother team would have won 3-2. I could be wrong but that is how it happened in the past and where I am from.

Houston in that match against Dallas made a critical mistake. No recognizing that Dallas had a weak line at 1 throughout the tourney could have put Troy Ralls into doubles at line 1 and put Perry Sontag who is a stronger player at line 2. That would have highly increased the chances of Houston making it past Wild Dallas even with Flora in the line-up. Hindsight is 20/20 though. There is always next year.

Since you saw Flora, how good was he? I just looked at his playoff scores and they looked unbelievable for playoffs. It is my experience that there are several people out of level at sectionals and those scores look monstrous.

To be honest I never got to see him. I was too busy playing and resting in between matches to go scouting. My captain saw him and he didn't believe anyone on our team could beat him so we had to adjust our line-up accordingly. We were up 2-1 with 2 matches left to go. one singles went to a 3rd set tiebreaker and lost 10-7 and the last line of doubles we lost in straights 7-6, 6-3. Disheartening. I wish I did get to see him because somehow I felt he might have been overhyped and some of it might have scared some of the captains to play around him.

Nice, I was researching them for our match at Nationals and I was worried about him. We lost our Line 1 singles as well to a DQ...but he has been a 3.5 for years...just solid improvement as opposed to being self rated. He was actually an appeal.
