Textured poly (Cyclone) vs Smooth (Silverstring) as a cross with Gut

Hi all,

I just tried volkl cyclone as a cross with natural gut main. I came from silverstring as a cross which is smooth. I know the standard advice is that for spin, you should have a smooth poly in the cross to reduce tension and allow quicker snap back. However, my practical experience is that with the shaped poly (cyclone) in the cross, I generate much more spin that with the smooth poly (silverstring) in the cross. I always had gut in the main.

Just an observation that goes against the standard advice....thoughts?

I can say that the YTEX Square X works well as a cross with gut mains as well. Not quite in the same ball park as far as cyclone goes. I have a reel of orange cyclone on the way, so your post is good news!

Go with whatever you like best.
I would consider string savers so the shaped cyclone doesn't saw through the gut mains.

Smooth polys work better as crosses with gut just because they don't saw through the gut as quickly. I use Cyclone full bed currently so keep in mind I'm steering you away from my favorite poly when I say this.

How does that compare to say, SPPP or MSV Co Focus?
Well... Strings such as Revolve are noticeably slicker and I find this leads to easier string movement in a gut/poly setup, which becomes noticeable in the spin produced (more so than in a full poly setup even I would say). In terms of other characteristics I am not sure, seeing as I have not played either string as a cross.

Well Silverstring isn't a slick string, so it's a bad benchmark.

Give a very slick and round string such as Wilson Revolve a try.
Shoot. Wish I saw this post earlier. I just placed an order for Silverstring to run as cross with VS.

I suppose I can try using Gosen Sidewinder as a cross. It seems to be pretty slick… Or maybe I can call TW and see if I can change my order to Revolve...

I like the 18Lg or 19g Cyclone as a cross with gut. The only issue I had was trying to get the tension right. Took a while to find the range to suited me.
