Tf40 305 - just too head heavy

I really want to like this racquet but I still find it head heavy with a Gamma leather grip on and an overgrip (1g of lead at 12). Any tips on things to try?

Why not try the 315 TF 40 instead. While it has the higher static weight the balance and SW is configured to swing a lot faster.
I think the TF 40 315 is one of the most balanced racquets out their with its specs. It’s a very good racquet.
The other alternatives worth considering include the Angell K7 Red and Diadem Elevate MP. Both frames play well

Remove lead, put in thinner strings. Thinner strings give more power and reduces swing weight in one go. Control is sacrificed though.

It is a lower powered racquet. Adding weight at the handle can create a HL balance, but it will be heavier. It sounds like you could consider a switch to a lighter racquet and then add weight with better results. Just my opinion

the tf40 305 swings a bit weird in my experience, not just heavy but somewhat unnatural. wilson blade has similar weight, swing weight and balance, and not a easy swing racquet but just feels more natural to swing in comparison. i think the tf40 swings a bit more like an extended racquet rather than just a standard length one with high sw. ofc you can tailweight the tf40 to a point that the handle is so heavy that it covers up the weight in the head/throat but then that takes away the point of playing a relatively light racquet.

that being said the tf40 has really good power and stability for its weight and def doesn't need lead imo

I've got a leather grip on the TF40 305, but honestly even playing stock I found the racquet to swing pretty naturally. It may be that either (1) the specs on our respective racquets came out a bit different, or (2) we may be used to different racquets before coming to the TF40. I had been hitting with a Head Pro Tour 2.0 for a while beforehand, and that was slower through the air due to a heftier swingweight. FWIW, the swingweight on my TF is in the lower 320s (my PT2.0 was closer to 330). So for me the TF40 has felt pretty fast through the air.

I second this!

I second this!

I've noticed you gravitate towards the same racquets as I do: Gravity Pro, 93P, now the 305.

Let me share something with you: I was recently separated from my Gravity Pros and only played with 93P and the 305. I got back to the Gravity Pro this week and I like it so much more! The GPro is basically a really forgiving 93P. I really didn't mesh too well with the 305, even after weighing it to get to a 32cm balance. The narrow head makes it not very stable, at least not as much as the GPro.

Hihi you follow me it seems! Nice. I forget - you have a OHBH? The Gravity Pro is one of my fave serving sticks. I will hit with it more. Funny thing is I just restrung it recently. Did you customise it in any way?

If you’re not worried about increasing the static weight of the racquet then add lead tape or blue tack to the end of the racquet right under the butt cap (this is the fastest way to make the balance more headlight.) If you’re worried about increasing the static weight of the racquet then swap the leather grip for a synthetic and add all the weight with lead tape or blue tack under the butt cap.

TF racquets have no trap door.

TF racquets have no trap door.
Wrap lead tape around the very end of the handle under the grip. If the flared handle bothers you then add lead tape on the outside of the butt cap and cover with electrical tape. If that cramps your style then switch racquets to a company that has a trap door.

That’s a ridiculous difference! Which one do you prefer and did you do anything to get them closer to each other? The lighter one has more flexibility to mod. Second one has potentially problematic issue of being both heavier overall and more weight in the head. If you like heftier sticks (>335g; >335 SW) it’s actually quite a nice spec. 13g under the buttcap would bring it right into how I like it (~337g, 32.7mm BP, 340 SW).

The nuisance of course is that not everyone likes meddling with lead and at the prices of racquets these days, one shouldn’t need to!

I only played with the lighter one because obviously has more room for customization. TF not having a trap door is a pain, but I added lead to the buttcap to get to 32cm balance. I like the racquet but to play well I still need to get the right string tension. I think an on spec 315 is a better match for me.

@pico if you still have this racket, try sticking a quarter under the band at the top of the grip and see how it feels (or tape 4-5 grams above the grip.) I have a bunch of these rackets and think I know exactly what you're talking about. The quarter there will give it a little more power and make the weight distribution feel more even. A quarter actually makes a big difference, so ultimately might need less.

I think having mass out in the hoop is what makes it feel so stable for its weight, but in the ones I have that balance just slightly on the less head-light side of the spectrum I can really sense that mass.

Thanks but I sold it a while ago. Swinging the Prestige MP now.

Felt the same think with the TF40. Swung heavy. Got a bit better once I added leather grip. But just never felt right. Didn't take time to measure the specs before I sold it to a friend who was looking for a racquet. I have to say that I did like serving with it. Serve had a good pop.
