Thank Goodness this Charade of a Year is Over

Now please go get surgery and have a moratorium on talking about injuries in 2015. The comms say that this is the kind of win that will "resonate around the tennis world." No, it won't and it Nadal's fault. Unless you are a casual fan who doesn't follow tennis at all, or you just arrived here from Mars, you know Nadal is heading to the hospital after this tournament to have his appendix removed. Yeah, it was a nice win for the kid. I'm sure he'll take it.

Nadal needs to watch some NHL hockey during the off-season. They don't discuss injuries. You either play or you don't. The ATP doesn't require you to disclose what's ailing you. It's time for Nadal to stop. He lost the plot in 2014 with injury talk. The whole frickin' year. First we had "blister-watch," then we had "back watch", then we had "wrist watch" and now we've got "appendix watch".

The whole heroic knee return was awesome but "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce." Elements of 2014 injury watch were farcical.

He'll finish number 3 and he won a French Open many many many fans of other players of this forum would take Nadal's season ;)

Imho Nadal should never have even considered playing Basel.

Anyway, it happened like it did, and now all we can do is just to wish him best luck with the surgery (which apparently was unavoidable right from the start), and a speedy and full recovery thereafter.

His freaking apendix doesnt have crap to do with him getting pounded. He has not been good since US open last year on anything but clay and even that hasnt been great. Why cant any of you see this?

my only guess is his team thought they could delay the surgery till end of the year but maybe it got inflamed / infected again or became more serious? Or, they expected Djoker not to play WTF due to baby that that's not the case anymore? Who knows, as usual, Rafa camp is a bit secretive.

Wow, barring the dismissal of the significance of his loss today, I couldn't agree more. Objectivity from a Nadal fan, nice to see. I applaud you.

I happen to think that this 'freaking appendix' of his does have 'crap' to do with him getting pounded, and that's exactly why I think he should have never even appeared in Basel in the first place, but should have pulled out and get that problem fixed. In other words, NO, I am not accepting this as any kind of an excuse for his loss. Let that be clear. ;)

That doesn't take anything away from the fact that I wish him good luck & a full recovery. Even if you dislike Rafa, it's better to have him around at tournaments than not. At least I think so.

Lol first in the history of the sport to play with appendicitis...unless it's just damage control on another silent ban

But you happen to think that cause its his latest oh I dont feel good thing. Why did Brown smoke him at Halle? Why did Ferrer two set him in Monte carlo? Why did the aussie kid smoke him at wimby? Now he walks into a hardcourt season and loses to more clowns and oh its his appendix. LOOK at Rafas results since after last years us open. They are not good. It doenst have anything to do with his apendix. This isnt a case of Rafa just losing to people that we have not heard of often and early. Even when he is winning he is struggling and thats been the case for like 14 months.

You're putting words in my mouth.
I have well seen Rafa's mediocre results this year (in fact, at that match in Halle - I was there in person!), and yes, it looks like he's obviously going downhill right now. My point is that the same thing got said back in 2009 already for Federer, and I would like to emphasize that a great champion usually manages to to find a way to cling back.

Of course, we'll just have to see what will happen during the upcoming season. It might well be that Nadal is on the downslope of the hill right now - but I'm just not ready to write him off just like that. That's all I wanted to say. ;)

Classic Nadal fan. How is this loss any different than when Federer lost to Nadal who was exactly same age as Coric is now in 2004 Miami?

http://www.tennis-x.com/story/2004-03-30/d.php

It was the continuation of an earlier problem for Federer, who survived a bad case of the shanks in a three-set opening win over Russian Nikolay Davydenko. The Swiss was hindered earlier in the week by the flu, which looks to be lingering. Through almost three months of play on the ATP tour, it was only the second loss for Federer on the year. This is the 17-year-old Nadal's first appearance at Miami.

Plus in 2004 recovering from flu Federer barely even beat pre prime Denko to play Nadal while Nadal easily handled his first two opponents.

Nadal looked a bit soft in my opinion. Not been training as hard. I think its injury and appendicitis honestly.

It's a hard year for Nadal. The first half of next year may get even tougher as his ranking may drop. The clay season will be crucial like it's been many years. If he doesn't win or get close to winning a Slam until wimbledon, we may even see him hang up the racquet before Roger does.

I have a feeling 2015 is going to be a great tennis year with Nadal and Djokovic shining in the limelight occasionally being challenged by the runners up and with Murray and F permanently out of the top 10.

Nadal should stop playing tournaments that have no meaning. He should just stick to the Slams, IW/Miami and the Clay MS.

Skip Davis Cup and most of the 500 bar Barcelona.

Play WTF....but I'd think he should skip it and focus on early prep for Aussie.

He does real well from January to June...and it wears on him. You see so many injuries after the FO.

MAYBE Murray, and that is a big maybe, literally, but F is extremely doubtful of dropping out of the top 10. :)

Nadal might drop off top 10, if his woes continue. Fed is unlikely.

This is newpball being what he is (day-dreaming hatred towards Fed)

If I was Nadal, I would play

1. AO
2. IW
3. Rome
4. RG
5. Halle
6. Wimbledon
7. Cincy
8. USO
9. WTF

And that's it. He's been touring since 16. Time to pull a Serena.

I don't usually bother with this kind of guff but this is funny schoolyard stuff. The Spanish chorus have been singing this tune for about 4 years now. But sadly for them it looks quite likely that Federer will maintain a top ten rank until he retires in 2016. After all he is ranked above a certain Iron Bull right now. Or hadn't you noticed?

Not enough clay man...

Drop Halle, add MC and Miami. I don't know the schedule off by heart but also play a clay tourney in Feb or something.

He doesn't need to do much on grass to be high in the rankings so who cares about the extra match or two.

Maybe add an indoor event between USO and WTF like Valencia.

12 tourneys should be ok.

While I'd disagree with you about the charade part, I also hope Nadal recovers soon. Next year won't be nearly as interesting if he isn't in the hunt for titles.

Murray will be right back in the top ten (he is already isn't he?) and yes, "F" will be a constant there much to newpball's dismay!

I don't think so. I think with the current field Nadal could drop off the face of the earth for a year and still be in the top ten.
