Thank you Danill Medvedev for saving tennis

This thread is long due..and I felt there should be one for appreciating what Medvedev did.

He saved tennis..ok mens tennis but he did that.

What he did
- He prevented the tour from being an utterly dominated one to a tour having competition.

- He saved next gens reputation from being a total joke to have credibility. Yes they can stop Djokovic in a slam.

-He proved that no one is invincible. At top level someday or other, one will have a bad day and the other player will capitalise on that. Unlike Taylor Fritz , unlike Musseti, unlike Nadal, Unlike Tispitas he didnt wilt away and got the victory

- For keeping the GOAT race open. Ok novak is ahead but far from over. If nadal wins more slams he will be in contention

- For the millions of tennis fans except die hard djoker fans. We want to see others also win. And we see finally

And now..let the floodgates open

Yes, because witnessing the CYGS for the first time in 52 years would have certainly killed tennis off.
I got your point and i explained why i wrote mine.

One player totally dominating the sport is never good. Someone should and always rise.
Be it Nadal who prevented CYGS in 2006,07. Federer in 11 or Wawrinka in 15 , someone always rise.

The person who would have won it did not deserve it, so good that it did not happen.
Hell he did not even deserve wimbledon, we are witnessing such low level days that Berretini who is a regular 4th round-quarterfinals candidates in others era or even in previous decades (like raonic was for so many years) made the final and novak wins by beating him.

The AO and FO were well deserved, so it should have been a 2 slam year.

Don't bother the OP doesn't even like Medvedev, just hates Djokovic.
What a sad life some people lead.
Nope. I like Medvedev a lot. Hes my second favorite player.
I dont hate djokovic but certainly dont want him to win*. And i didnt like some of the violent outbursts he had this year at AO, FO, Olympics and USO.

In fact, many people i know in real were put off by Djokovic reaction in matches this year..They were not avid tennis followers but didnt like that.

* There was a time where i wanted Djokovic to win and stop Nadal. Thats in 2011 -14 and 2018. But thats another story

What do you call the last 15+ years?

Which next gens? What are we on now? Next gen4? Next gen5?

These guys are in their mid 30's. There should have been more competition years ago.

Last 15 years , 3 guys dominated. It was not one guy entirely.

And the next gen, first time they got real credibility. Beat a top guy and win slam. This lot is -25 yrs old and they need to prove that they can beat the -35 year dominators

The earlier lot of around -30 years is gone like cilic, nishi, dimi etc.

One of those 3 guys has dominated over and over again. How many years did they win all the slams and one of them winning at least 2 and sometimes 3? Total dominance.

Again which next gen? 25 years old is a next gen? I thought they had to be under 21 to play in their participation tournament. What they are is the attrition-gen. The guys coming into their best while the old guys are at the tail-end of their talent. Medvedev (whom I like and I'm glad he won) beat a Djokovic who was softened a lot by Zverev.

Again, this competition should have been here years ago.

Yes, because tennis would have had no chance to be saved at AO 2022 with Next Gen winning had Novak won the CYGS.
You gotta admit, felling Djokovic in such a historic moment, when he was presumably very motivated, does add some credibility to the competition.

Djokovic still had a terrific year, and still will be a cofavorite next AO/FO/USO, and favorite next Wimbledon unless he falls off a cliff or something. We may not have seen the last chapter of the Three Amigos just yet.

I never said otherwise. In fact I even made a thread that no matter what happens history will be made, either CYGS or someone will be known for stopping it. However saying that only a loss for Djokovic doing something that many of us have never seen in our own lifetimes is saving tennis, is lets face it, is disingenuous at best.

Seems a fair point. Who is your favorite player?

Novak's competition is actually weak on Grass and that has been for many years, if an old past his prime washed up Federer made the final and an old claydal who struggled for 6 years on grass make the semis of wimbledon in 2019 then you can imagine how pathetic the field is, this year Berretini reaching final proved it.

Apart from this Novak has had decent enough competition on HCs and on Clay.

Absence of Dominic Thiem has created a bit of an issue but others have stepped.

Grass is the only issue here.

I agree that both outcomes would be good for tennis for different reasons.

Pity it wasn't a closer match, because the situation merited an epic.

I'll be honest, if Djokovic was to lose, which he did, I am glad it was ruthlessly quick. It would have been a lot tougher to digest, had he come within inches only to lose. Here he was behind from the very first game, easier to accept this.

You said 15 years. That means from 2006 till now.

2006-10 : Federer and Nadal dominated
Djokovic started dominating from 2011 onwards.
He dominated majority of the decade 11,12,15,16,18,19.

14 and 20 was shared.
13 and 17 was by Nadal.

Well next gen should have come earlier but it takes immense skills and mental strength to stick with the big guys at the slams. So they took time which is expected

Yeah I can see that. Rafa's loss after being up 5-0 in RG was pretty heartbreaking back on the day.

But as months passed, I was glad that he fought hard.

Agree. Thats why federer W19 and US09, AO 09 losses hurt the most to me. They were close matches.
In comparison, AO 20, FO 2008 doesnt sting at all

61, 57, 54. Djokovic, Nadal, Federer. That's how many major titles (slams, ATP Finals and Masters) those 3 guys have. That's not one guy dominating. That's 3 guys totally dominating for 15+ years.

They can't be "next gen" forever. To play in the next gen participation tournament you have to be 21 or under and have a certain ranking minimum (I forget what it is).

Lol how he dominated 12-14 winning only 1 slam per year. 2013 belonged to Nadal.

The quality of play certainly has gone downhill in the last several years in men's tennis. But, it was still a gut wrenching loss for someone on such a tear through the season. I can appreciate Novak's raw emotion after losing, but funny how no one is crapping on him crying for losing. When Federer was about to break the slam record and lost, people were happy to crap all over his tears. Novak does it and no one bats an eye on here. Just goes to show the utter hatred for the man who broke the slam record first. I'm sure Novak will be back next year breaking more records, crying in loss and victory.

That is quite an excellent point. When Federer has cried after losses he was mocked and ridiculed by the same Djokovic fans who seem proud of Djokovic repeatedly crying after losses.

No, Novak deserved to win.

But point is why doesn't he have anyone better than Berretini in the final ?

Nd how did 33 yr olf Rafa (who struggled for 6 years on grass prior to this) reach semis in 2019 and 38 yr old Fed and 32 yr old Novak reach finals ?

The guys in the 20s are doing what ? Berretini? Lol, he is another Raonic, he has no business to be in the semis or beyond, Qfs is his limit permitted in other eras.

Novak's competition on HCs and on Clay is still good but Grass tour is quite bad, Kevin Anderson progressed to the final in 2018, that too says a lot.

Sunny014

Today I am sure that Novak can still be beaten on HCs but Grass is where he is looking unbeatable, not because he is a great grass courter, because the youngsters are TRASH

They are so bad that they wouldn't even reach the 2nd week in 2000s or 90s or 80s.....

He did what Dimi, Raonic and Nishikori failed to do. He did what Thiem kind of did for a brief moment and before that tried valiantly to do. He did what his gen buddies and himself messed up earlier this season. Meddy saved tennis! It was a looooong time coming. But who cares about that. Today is today and Meddy is a slam champ.
