That match that helped Djokovic win USO 2015

Did Djokovic need to avoid Nadal at USO 2015 to win the title?

Fognini coming back from 2-0 down to upset Nadal, and getting rid of the only man who was beating Djokovic that year at the USO, because Nadal is 2-1 against Djokovic, so Djokovic most certainly needed to avoid a certain defeat at the hands of the Spaniard that year, who would have knocked Novak out....forget about the fact that Djokovic had straight set this Nadal at RG on PC in hot sunny high bouncing conditions, here on Ashe even Djokovic 2015 would have gone down to Nadal 2015...

OK, poll is available. Do you think Djokovic needed to avoid Nadal and a loss in the quarters to win the title. I think yes. :)

I guess Istomin and Chung also saved Nadal and Federer from another humiliating loss at the hands of Djokovic, by taking out Novak for them at AO17-18, amiright mate ?

Nadal leads Djokovic 2-1 at USO, so he was fav to come through their quarter. Djokovic got lucky that Fognini took Nadal out in the third round, allowing him to win the title in 2015.

Well obviously, Nadal is invincible on hardcourts, and especially fast USO surface, that Novak sucks on. RG was low bouncing damp conditions which has no bearing on how the USO match would go, since fast decoturf is where Nadal is the man to beat. The only place where Novak would stand a chance is RLA, not AA, as we know decoturf and Plexi are two completely different surfaces that should not be lumped in HC category. Just give Nadal high bouncing fast HC and bloodbath will ensue.

But Djokovic also leads Nadal 2-0 and Federer 4-1 at the AO, so they were also incredibly lucky that Istomin and Chung took him out for them, otherwise Novak would now be on 7 straight AOs, no ?

No it would take USO 2010/2013 Nadal to have a shot at beating that Djokovic.

Exactly! Djokovic needed Nadal out so he could win the title, Nadal has a 2-1 H2H against him there.

But what does that have to do with Nadal being the man to beat at the USO? Novak avoided a massive loss in 2015 to Rafa.

I read that comment of that Nadal fan @Hitman

Rafa ( during RG 2015 ) ,was at his lowest form in his entire life even worse than the time Rafa used to play tennis in school , and hence Djoker win against him doesn't count at RG15 .

But , Rafa would have bagelled Djoker at USO ( 6-0 6-1 6-0 ) if fognini didn't stop Rafa ,considering Rafa is the alpha-player at Arthur Ashe and is 2-1 H2H .

I agree with that honest Rafa fan . Thank you Fognini for saving Djokers *** from getting kicked by the Nadal

Djokovic vultured big time, his daddy on NA deco turf was taken out, otherwise he would have brought Novak down in that 2015 match.

Plus , imagine if Djoker never hit that lucky shot in semis on matchpoints (2011 ) , then Djokovic would have a Roddick like career at USO .

Thank you Fognini for stopping the bull from Mallorca
Djokovic was incredibly lucky at 2018 USO that Nadal got injured. History is on Nadal's side, and it says that healthy Nadal never lost a USO match since 2010.

Actually Nadal was playing at the same level as 2010, 2011, 2013.... only problem is the tour figured his game out

Good on him retooling his game and evolving since 2017 to stay at the top, otherwise he might still be on 14 slams

And Rafa was healthy that year, and healthy Rafa on deco turf is the fav always. Fog helped out big time.

Wow , so if Nadal didn't withdraw from USO semis , Novak would have never won USO o_O . Novack is a vulture and opportunist ,thats for sure !

One other match helped Novak much more to beat Federer at US Open...

It was Cincinnati final where Fed used his SABR tactics very successfully... He showed Novak his cards, and Novak was prepared at the USO... Fed should have save this for more important match...

That would have been a moot point, since Djokovic 2015 wasn't making it to Federer had he played Nadal in the quarters. 2-1 remember.

It's not like Novak & team wouldn't have watched Fed's other matches that summer to prepare for it, and it's a shot he'd have to practice in a real match before feeling comfortable trying it out in a slam final. So either way Novak was going to be ready for it.

Djoker fanbase used to lie all these years about how unlucky Djoker was at USO .

Today , it's proved Djokovic is nothing but lucky Vulturovic at USO :sneaky:

Sure I'll buy it, he got lucky enough that Fed played like Berdych :p
Federer v Nadal final could have happened in 2015 had Fognini not taken Nadal out in the third round, because you know 2-1 and all. Djokovic wasn't beating that Nadal in the quarters that year, as I've heard Novak has always had to avoid Rafa these past 8 years to try to win in NYC.

Facts  I see zero evidence to the contrary lol

Honestly, Nadal is a much better slow hardcourt player and is pretty much unbeatable at USO now, so yeah. Djokovic wouldn't have stood a chance.
Absolutely some very crucial information was brought into the light, and how Fognini gave Djokovic USO 2015. Nadal 2015 would have taken Djokovic out in about 4 sets, given the form of both players when they step out onto deco turf in NA.
