The “Colonel” would have competed better…

The loss to Djokovic at Wimbledon really seems to have derailed Denis. He's regressed this year and seems to be playing with zero strategy. McEnroe suggested it might be time to move on from Youzhny.
Definitely seems like Shapo is fed up of the colonel.

It is not a matter of talent or coaching. Denis has had very good coaches. I believe it's an attitude issue. Presently, Denis is 10 in the world. I think he looks at that number and figures he's doing very well. He makes good money, travels around the world doing what he loves, has a beautiful girlfriend and it all seems good to him. Of course, I also believe he wants to win the big titles, but somehow he moves on from these losses and just keeps going the same way he always has. I've always felt he'll have some big wins but also a lot of losses. He plays a high risk game and doesn't seem to have any intention of changing that. That's an attitude issue. Maybe he needs a different coach. I don't know. But whomever coaches him, someone has to get it into that thick head of his he needs to play with strategy because he doesn't. He just plays the way he likes to play without a sense of point construction or playing to the opponent. Last night he should have focused on Harris' backhand, the weaker side and been more patient in rallies. But, he didn't. Until he gets that message, it will always be the same story. A ton of talent going to waste right now. JMO.

I didn't hear John's commentary but Denis needs someone like John who will teach him point construction and strategy.

Harris played really well and held it together mentally under a lot of pressure. Shapo should have done something different than trying to overpower Harris at least at some point during the match.

Tsitsipas has done the same since losing to Djokovic at RG. Nothing wrong with losing to Djokovic in a slam but falling to pieces and losing to random players week in week out after is a problem

yes. without a doubt
Wow.... one might argue that a truly talented player wouldn't have lost all 8 finals they contested. FAA is 21 and never has won a title and spectacularly choked in several of those finals (to inferior players). Players with an abundance of talent invariably have better results than this. I think Denis has WAY more talent than FAA, but Felix will probably have the superior career. In any case, Denis is a helluva lot more fun to watch than FAA with his horrible grunting. I love Felix as a person, but no fan of his droning style of play.

It is not that Shapavalov has a boatload of titles. He has a measly single 250 at Sweden beating Krajinovic.
