Sup kids,

As you might have noticed, @travlerajm made a great suggestion last week when he said we should stick to a new NBA thread for each season, "with links in the op to previous chapters so that history is still accessible."

And now that the draft is upon us I'll do just that with this inaugural history-inclusive edition. Here's what I could dig up, with a hyperlink for each season followed by the number of replies for comparison:

2005 playoffs - 50
2005 finals - 74
2006 playoffs - 93
2006 finals - 58
2007 playoffs - 244
2008 playoffs - 67 (+6)
2008 finals - 360
2009 playoffs - 107
2009 finals - 17
2010 playoffs - 89
2011 playoffs - 956
2011–12 - 808
2012 playoffs - 638
2012–13 - 1893 (+6)
2013–14 - 1038
2014 finals - 314
2014 "postseason hunt" - 209 (included due to a certain MJ wannabe's overhyped trade)
2014–15 - 1029
2015–16 - 2073
2016–17 - 1463
2017 finals - 379
2017–18 - 3198
2018–19 - 2728
2019–20 - 2289
2020–21 - 254 (ouch)
2021–22 - 493 (ditto)
2022–23 - 1755
Total - 22,676 (or 22,690 including the two duplicate threads and the OPs)

Needless to say the above excludes several threads I might have missed (I only searched those with "NBA" in their titles) and all other NBA-related ones (I mostly excluded poll-specific ones asking who would be the champs/MVP/etc. and, of course, GOAT discussions). You're welcome to do your own exhumation and suggest another addition or two.

At any rate you can see that we've been engaging in NBA gabfests almost from the get-go (FFY none other than @TW Staff joined the current edition of the forum on 1/21/04), and except during the curiously lethargic 2009/10 postseasons and the recent COVID slowdown the best overall athletes in the world have been commanding much of our attention since 2007. In fact that total of 22,675 replies compares quite favorably with the "Football Club" thread's 44,835 (since 8/10/08) - of course there are the separate WC threads, but then basketball has only one big event everyone cares about - which lends credence to my infallible observation that the world's two most popular sports also happen to be TTW's own faves outside tennis itself.

Enough housekeeping. So what do y'all think about the Big Draft with you-know-who guaranteed to claim the top spot? Or are you more excited about the trades or the off-court soap operas which always seem to engulf the league at the most inopportune or unexpected times? Don't be shy with your armchair takes!

Tyus Jones going to the Wizards, Memphis gets Marcus Smart, and Porzingis still to Boston? Kinda confused then what Boston is gonna do, unless Tatum becomes primary ball handler?

I don't think he's bringing the green hair to Memphis though

I'm kinda confused by it too. My initial thought was maybe they're eying to replace Horford. Maybe idea is to get another big who can space the floor, but I dunno. Interesting stat I heard on NBA radio though was that Porzingis was 4th or 5th in terms of points allowed when defending pick and roll. Didn't think he was a great defender but maybe stats say otherwise.

Still though...offensively I think he likes shooting too much. Seems like he's one of those bigs who is afraid of the paint at times, and I think that's a little bit more of what Boston needs. They have all the shooting they could want.

Next up, looks like Poole is going to the Wizards for Chris Paul.

As if the warriors couldn't get more unlikable, imo anyway. At least Poole's stupid turnovers were good for some laughs.

Just a note on the OP:

2014 wasn’t a trade nor was it overhyped, it was a free agency decision.

LeBron has actually never been traded nor has he asked for a trade publicly, he plays out his contract and handles business in free agency.

Smart gone. Excellent.
Maybe I'm out of the loop but do you really think your Celts would be better off sans the Dyed One? The guy's defense/hustle alone is a big net positive and while streaky his perimeter shooting is nothing to scoff at, either.

Warriors are dumb, they could have got a good player for Poole. Why would you trade a good asset for an always injured grandpa. Poole's value is down now, but all you have to do is make him the number one option for a couple games and let his value go way up, then trade him for something good. Warriors are dumb.

The Wizards are about to announce that anyone can have Monte Morris for a ham sandwich, and anyone can have Delon Wright for a bag of chips.

Then they are petitioning to join the ACC.

Worst pick possible. Hornets just cursed themselves for 20 more years. Can’t say I expected anything less though. They ALWAYS take the wrong guy it never fails

My reaction to yet another cheap shot from a bitter, unrelenting hater of the greatest player of the 21st century…
How can I be labeled a "hater" of any sort when I made an exception for that draft thread largely meant for your boy?! You seriously need to chill! Gentle ribbing ain't hating!

That Miller kid is an absolute stick. He needs to add AT LEAST 40 lbs in the offseason if he wants to avoid hospitalization in his first NBA game.

WeMban-Tonio!
Way too much pressure on a 19-year-old kid, methinks. Maybe he'll be alright cuz he seems like a well-grounded kid, but if I were his family/team I'd advise him to cut down on his media engagements for now.

It’s not this one post, it’s everything else. You constantly bring him up in a negative light and disparage him. that’s OK, just own that you’re a hater.

The Miller pick makes me tear out my hair. It may be the worst #2 pick since Hasheem Thabeet. A 6’9” beanpole with poor athleticism, OK defense, decent but not great ball handling, AWFUL numbers at the rim… his only skill is jump shooting because he’s too skinny and unathletic to do anything else. He also had the worst NCAA tournament measured in the modern era (he was hurt to be fair, but not a good sign) and to top it all off was probably involved in a murder.

It is the worst pick imaginable and possible, and that is exactly why MJ and the Hornets made it. They have done this for the past 20 years.

His best player comp is basically Adam Morrison.

Jett Howard 11 LOLOLOLOLOL
Dude he got locked up by Leaky Black

I mean, so did Brandon Miller. So I shouldn’t be laughing. But his only strength is shooting and he has below average everything else. Yikes

I also have no clue how you scout Michigan and come away taking Howard over Bufkin but that’s another story

I couldn’t help but notice that the thread reply volume stats posted in the OP track with LeBron’s career. Order-of-magnitude uptick after formation of the Heatles, then 2 dead years when his post pandemic Lakers teams fizzled and didn’t make deep playoff runs.

Saw that Victor guy in the news and thought Wanyama had taken up a different profession. lol
Victor is going to win them rings for Harry.

But yeah, all being well, I'll be following a bit of NBA during the regular season just to take a look at this guy. Michael Douglas style. Transcending sport and all that jazz. At least at the beginning before he becomes a 40dd bust. Only joking. Best of luck to him. Oh

Speaking of jazz. Kareem is keeping er lit.

Bro you're still way off base! By now you should know moi well enough to be able to tell when I'm really hatin' on someone. I do like to take potshots at your boy cuz of the ridiculous overhype, but that's peanuts compared to the real trollfests on bball boards!

As to the Miller scandal, looks like his connection to the shooting isn't quite as clear as you make it out to be:

Unless he knowingly delivered the gun to be used in murder I doubt he'll see any time. Still couldn't help with his training, obviously.

Nice job on the compilation @NonP. Some interesting ancient chats.
That's what I'm talking about. If anything I did LeBrick a big service by highlighting his value to the league's fat cats! If that makes moi a "hater" his team should wish there are millions more of us!

I hope we get a dramatic 2020 final. Yes, throwback Friday. My beloved Nuggets (16-13) vs 76ers (21-8) (5 games in the playoffs.)

Playoff Jimmy actually with a good team here. Simmons is better than Murray. Jokic vs Embiid. Ohh, I'd like to say they are fighting over the best player in the league award but they aren't. Giannis starts the game at 99. No MVP awards, that award went to who else?

Bret Allen is Bart's distant cousin, no speed force abilities, just natural talent. I'm still having these thoughts of Embiid catching my dunk attempts, no sweat at all. The process ready to dominate.

Harden to the Clips makes perfect sense. I feel like the Clippers are the most desperate franchise in the NBA, not only because the Kawhi/PG era has been abject failure so far, they’re also watching Phoenix and GS make moves in their own division and getting worried about being left behind. Plus they want to have a good team when they open the new arena - I think Ballmer realizes it’s now or never for this project.

I think it happens. Don’t see any real suitors.

Buying harden right before his value drops off a cliff would be a very clipper thing to do.

Just saw this. Was out playing pickleball (don't judge me) and then got asked to fill in last minute for a match at my club (frigging three hour match, ugh). Didn't check my phone.

Woowee... Really curious to see how things are gonna go, especially with Harris' expiring contract next year also. I don't think Maxey is ready to be a starting PG so they probably need somebody to fill that role.

I don't even think this is possible, but if the Sixers could somehow work some magic and get both Dame and Grant from the trailblazers... That might be the dream scenario, but I don't think that's realistic at all.

as a Rockets fan, was afraid today's Harden news meant he was coming back to Houston so I'm relieved he's getting linked to the Suns and the Clippers. if the Clippers are ever healthy, they're contenders --- even moreso with Harden. have no idea who the Suns could offer and what he would add to them, and then you add the Kyrie rumors on top of that...
