The ALDI Supermarkets $50 "players" racket - mini-review and PICS:

After seeing the bridge, oval shape, 97" headsize, beam and string pattern, the first thing I thought of was that yet another company was using the Major Bullit Elite mold, a la Dunlop 300 Tour.

I wouldn't be at all suprised.

personal comments take away from the quality of the information presented on the forum. I can't imagine why anyone would want to have any sort of "relationship" with another user here. Strange indeed to get your social attention via random folks on the interwebz who don't even like you.

Hey, I just found out there are ALDI supermarkets here in the USA, and not far from me. Are they the same as the ones over there?

Look, I'm in here on TT because I like the information and atmosphere in here - trolls like GSM destroys this forum and take it apart piece by piece.

I have ignored him for some time now, but the teenage troll just keeps on attacking me.

So tell me one good reason why I should not use the "report to admin" button ?

I'm just cautioning you to be the bigger man. Report him if you like, but do you really need to point it out?

Oh, and I like Danish food. That was half the reason for my post :D

Unfortunately most of the kids here act really immature, I've noticed. I have about 2 dozen of them on my ignore list. And feel free to report posts to mods, I do it all the time. If they have no content whatsoever and are just attacks, the mods WANT you to report them because it makes Tennis Warehouse look bad when their forums are filled with children using the anonymity of the internet to vent their adolescent rage on random strangers.

You've got a point :)

Just needed to point it out, because I want him to know, that I'm tired of his endless attacks on me in here. The guy also emails me, jump into my FOR SALE threads and tell that you can get it cheaper on E-bay (but of course forget to mention that E-bay is full of copy cr_ap), what is next - will he also start to call me if he had my number

Just to let him know, that I'm not afraid of people of his kind.

I'm a civil guy, but the wild big VIKING in me is just below the surface :D

Now I will go eat some Medisterpølse with Dijon Mustard, drink some Mjød Stout Beer and after that have a couple of æbleskiver baked in the oven

Well you have to admit your HEAD thread was just asking for it.
And then condescendingly dismissing everyone who doesn't answer your question as childish doesn't help much. The majority of people on here are good people. If none of the replies to your thread are serious until you threaten to ignore everyone, then you need to rethink the way you ask things.
Nothing against you, but you need to lighten up a bit. People are on here to have fun too.

On to the racquet, can anyone tell me about how squared off the beam is in comparison to a 300T or APD or something similar?

Yeah you're right.

Trolls are slowly but steadily destroying a great forum like TT.

I do try to ignore him, but his very agitating personal posts is just too much.

Personal attacks like these are simply just too much.......now it has to stop !

As you say in your signature, too many people find it too easy to attack people using a keyboard and an alias account name.......

I agree 100%. The posters here in the last year or so has been getting worse and worse with attacks. No wonder so many of the more experienced posters have either left or limit their postings. Darn shame we can't have their experience shared when you have kids spoiling this site.

Probably yes but with local variations. It's up to the local HQ what products they source for their stores. I recall ALDI UK 2yrs ago sold HEAD Murray Radical PJ'ed cheapies that ALDI Australia didn't get.

On to the racquet, can anyone tell me about how squared off the beam is in comparison to a 300T or APD or something similar?
The ALDI racket is definitely not identical to the 300 Tour mold; I've owned both and the ALDI is a uniquely different mold not seen on any of the current frames at the moment. It is 21mm whereas the 300 Tour is 20mm. The ALDI beams are more rounded whilst the 300 Tour's are squared off and more of a flush, straight-edged finish, in that classic box-beam kind of way. If the ALDI was more headlight I would've had no hesitation in picking up half a dozen. Unfortunately the OEM must've assumed rec-playing ALDI customers wanted head heavy granny sticks and so made them very sluggish in their balance.

Anyone still keen to pickup ALDI rackets must keep a weekly eye out in your area. They're pretty random in the way they sell their cool stuff - and it's always in limited quantities per store, so be prepared to travel and do the "ALDI Shuffle". If you can't get a racket you might walk out with a cool sports chronograph watch (highly recommended - keeps brilliant time):)

would ALDI be the equivalent of WAL MART in the US?
No. ALDI is a discount grocery that also sells a few "Special Buy" items. I haven't seen tennis gear in any of the ALDI's around here.

I was in ALDI last night (for hamburger buns) and found a particular style of kitchen ware that my wife has been searching for. $20 early Christmas gift for her that would've cost $50-$60 elsewhere. They did have some Crane Sports under armour type clothing on sale, but not in my size.

Back to the racquet - it sucks.
What a quality, informed comment that is consistent with the rest of the thread. Not.

----

As for ALDI, as others have said, their core food range stays pretty constant (and cheap, and much of it is good), but their variable range changes week to week. About every second week or so it'll be electronics of some variant (from plasmas to computers to whatever) and the other weeks it'll be something like sports, homewares, tools, outdoor gear, etc, and usually seasonally targeted. This gear is all usually around 50-70% of what you'd pay for a normal 'cheap' brand.

They also have a fantastic returns policy - if you don't like something - even if you've used it - you have up to (from memory) two months to return it 'no questions asked'.

It is now virtually five years to the day I first posted about ALDI tennis rackets. Today was the day ALDI Australia offered for sale their 2015 racket, true to form it is part of this week's catalog specials coinciding with the Aust Open, which means a selection of cheap tennis stuff and summer beach toys.

I will post pics late this week when I have time, together with the 2014 version. This year's model is basically a Pure Drive homage, certainly closer to the Pure Drive than previous ALDI iterations.
Nominal weight is claimed to be 290 unstrung. Give or take, it's in the same weight ballpark - 290-300gms - as many other rackets.

Regrettably the price the past two years has been AUD$30 and not $50 as it was five years ago. The cheapness can be somewhat felt in the reduced overall refinement of the 2015 model against the 2010 one.

I read this when you wrote about this and wondered... but aren't these racquets flexy as all hell?

Aldi tennis shoes are just plain dangerous btw.

I just don't think this equipment(?) is really usable in any big way, if at all, it all just spells injury to my mind, anyway g'luck.

As some of you are aware, ALDI is the German supermarket chain with a reputation for value for money, if not quality at reasonable prices. They are also well known for their door-bustingly popular non-grocery novelties and electronics. As an in-principle member of The Cheap Player's Club, I thought I'd share this find with TT members - it's a AUD$59 racket with specs and pretensions similar to other rackets appealing to enthusiasts at level 3.5 and higher. ALDI Australia usually trots out tennis bargains around the AO fortnight; I was disappointed this year they didn't include a 6-pack bag like they did last year but they made up for it with this racket; previous offerings were limited to oversized granny sticks and kids frames.

"Power Pro 10" tennis racket - nominal specs:
97sq.in
325gm strung weight
330mm strung balance
18x20
21mm beam

FIRST LOOKS: Badged under ALDI's housebrand for sporting goods - Crane Sports - the racket is sold shipped in a pro-strung look full-length plastic bag. Includes headcover, warranty card and round dampener. Attention to detail extends to branding on headcover interior, logo zip-pull, two-tone faux-hybrid synthetic strings, branding on strings and stencilled logo.

FRAME COSMETICS: "YouTek Prestige red meets Aerogel 300". Evidently HEAD didn't care to trademark its familiar glossy wine red colour, as it looks beautiful on this frame. Teamed with black and grey-dotted accents on each hoop corner, the racket oozes paintjob cool especially now as I've replaced the ugly white ribbed grip with a royal blue one. Also came fitted with a white rubber thingey at top of grip. Faux-braiding insert at bridge.

BRIEF PLAYTEST: Before lead the pre-strung racket had the slight inertia one would expect of a nominally even balanced but slightly headheavy frame. I leaded it at the bottom of the handle to improve maneuverability. Despite the crap strings, the frame felt plush and comfortable with no jarring stiffness. I'd estimate the flex rating around 58 - soft overall.

I'd be interested if anyone could trace the racket's OEM origins from the pallet code - ET207B-4

what is the Swing weight ?? and is it extended ?

Around 64-65, subjectively. Certainly not uncomfortably stiff nor unplayably soft
Thanks. Doesn't sound like it's worth the two hour drive each way and I've read that they don't even sell racquets anymore, at least not in the Chicago store. Then again, that's Chicago where basketball and baseball are probably much more popular sports.

For anyone desperate to obtain this racket in my OP, I wouldn't hold any hope of seeing it return to Aldi stores anywhere soon. It's been 7 years since I originally posted. I have checked my local Aldi stores every year since then. Every January when Aldi Australia sells tennis stuff to coincide with the AO. In every year since, they have moved to worse and worse rackets. First they were decent oversized granny sticks with reasonable granny weights (260gm) then they moved to sub-250gm ones with horrible quality and plastic strings.
The only thing serious TT Cheap Tennis fans can do is to get in the ear of Aldi's German buying head office which sources all these OEM rackets. Aldi HQ needs to know they can be on a sales winner if they could source a decent frame from an OEM. If any German members are reading this it would be great if they could let Aldi know this. It can't be that hard to source an OEM frame at unstrung weight 290-305gms. I don't know, maybe Aldi and Lidl can talk to the biuyers at Decathlon Sports?
