(But truth be known, I'm a fan of the man from Uruguay. I visited Buenos Aires a few years ago and didn't quite manage to fit a trip in across the river to Uruguay. It struck me as the small country squashed between the behemoths of Argentina and Brazil. As a Canadian I can relate to living beside a behemoth.)

Hey, my great grandfather was born in Newfoundland, and it didn't 'belong' to Canada until 1949. Who cares about Alaska?? :-D

And, he had some African DNA in him. I now know that I relate to some distant African-American cousins in the southern US. I'm the palest 'Scottish' ancestor ever, but I am totally embracing my African-American ancestors.

A very young stringytom once took a gander at Newfoundland on a refuel stop at their capital’s airport. It was summer and still broad daylight in late evening and not a parka to be seen.

The two old pros are doing their best to drain the winner for our teen hope. On serve halfway through the third and more than two hours committed to the struggle.

What a great match from felix. His forehand is so great and also has so much variety . He can generate power and make angles out of almost nothing from it.

He needs to be the aggressor in the Cuevas match and dictate play rather than letting Cuevas dictate. It’ll definetly be the toughest match he will have in this tournament .

So, Serbia's Laslo Djere has reached his first ATP 500 singles final after his semi-final opponent, the Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, withdrew from the tournament due to injury earlier today. Djere will therefore be the one to face either FAA or the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in tomorrow's final. If the young Canadian is able to play as well as he did at times in his quarter-final win over Jaume Munar yesterday, and not to have any lapses on serve, then he certainly has a good chance of reaching his first singles final at this level.

His competition in Rio could have been at a Challenger tournament, so Felix is very fortunate to have all these points. It will make things a lot easier for him - direct entry into nearly everything he wants to play beginning in 6 weeks.

But that just shows how much talent this kid has that he has won so much on clay which is definitely not his best surface. Imagine what he could have done if he had played his Future and Challenger matches on hard, but credit to his coaches for convincing him to expand his game and work on clay.

Felix straight set everyone until the semifinals, where he faced clay veteran Cuevas, who only managed to take one set off him. Now he's up against a player that has a career high of 83. This may be Felix's chance.

If he wins this, he'll be #42 in the world, just behind Wawrinka.

Oh B.S. Felix beat #15 Fognini (who is a very good clay court player) and then Munar who has been hot these past few months and now one of the best clay court players in the world in Cuevas. That's not Challenger level competition. Don't minimize what the kid has accomplished - he deserves mucho credit for what he's done.

Of course he deserves credit. He deserves credit for winning Challenger tournaments at this stage of his career. But his competition has been relatively weak for a 500 level tournament, and he's very fortunate to have so many points for these wins. Apart from Fognini, who is a nutbar who may or may not try, this is not the A list of the ATP. The final definitely could be a Challenger final. We're not talking Queens or Halle level here. It doesn't mean Felix does not deserve credit for making a final.

The competition has been ATP 3rd tier and lower. It's OK. Felix still has done great. Top tier are major winners, then there is the Raonic, Nishikori, etc. tier. All his opponents have been below those two categories.

You're right, quite a weak field really. But you still have to win those matches! Looking like a great decision to play the mini clay swing with it's relatively softer competition.

Yeah winning a big tournament is as much mental as the physical side. Doesn’t matter if you’re playing a weaker competitor , it’s still a prestigious tournament , which can be a springboard for greater things.

I don’t know much about the first titles for nadal, Federer or Djokovic . Maybe they also had an easy draw?

fedr had to beat Kafelnikov (just two years removed from AO title and #1 ranking) and Ivanisevic (months before his Wimby title) back to back in the QFs and SFs. Milan indoor carpet 2001.

The Nadal beat one top 10 player (Mantilla) and a couple of top 20 players (Acasuso and Squillari). Sopot clay 2004.

Joe Kovic beat post-prime Coria and Massu in the SFs/final. Amersfoort clay 2006.

It’s not like it’s his fault Thiem, Cecchinato and Schwartzman all got eliminated in the first round. He took care of the 2nd seed and as such got to ride the 2nd seed « easier draw ».

Btw all four semi-finalists were the four that eliminated the 4 first seeds. It’s as fair as it gets.

Huge kudo to FAA. He still hits a lot of UE but at least he backs this off with a whole lot of winners. There are gonna be ups and downs, he’s only 18. But he really showed a lot of calm this week. The future looks bright for Felix.

Even if they didn't, they might have had an "easy" draw prior to their first title that they could have capitalized on, but it got lost to history because they did not make it out of the early rounds and perhaps only they, their coaches and 2-3 fans noticed what could have been, "if only".

Capitalizing on the chances you have is everything. There were 30 other players in that draw who couldn't.
