The Australian Open 2008 Finals - [3] Djokovic v Tsonga

It's Djokovic and Tsonga in the finals this year, both knocking out Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the worlds number 1 and 2, respectively: both in STRAIGHT SETS.

Tsonga is ON FIRE, and Djokovic is the youngest man to reach all 4 Grand Slam semi's; along with not dropping a single set during the course of the entire tournament.

Can Djokovic wrap up the the tounrament in straights, or will the Frenchman prevail?

Personally, after seeing Djokovic play against Federer, is he keeps it up, I think he'll win the this tournament.

Vote and discuss

Tsonga in 3 or 4.
Novak is a nice guy but just too boring. (I mean apart from those masha imitations which he can't keep repeating forever).

When was the last time a GS final was contested between two players that BOTH have zero vowels in the first two characters of their last name?

I like the question. In the men's game I believe it was in 1963 when Chuck McKinley defeated Fred Stolle at the Wimbledon in straight sets.

The last male grand slam champion with two consonants at the start of their surname was Krajicek in 1996 at Wimbledon.

I feel that Djokovicic deserves to win the final here having defeated Federer in the semi-final. However I actually think that Tsonga played better in his semi-final than Djokovic did in his (despite Federer playing better than Nadal).

I think this match will be decided by mental attitude and nerves more than anything else. Tsonga may be tight in his 1st grand slam final or he may feel he has nothing to lose. Djokovic may feel the pressure being the favourite in a big profile match. Either way time will tell.

I like the question. In the men's game I believe it was in 1970 when Ashe defeated Crealy at the Australian Open in straight sets.

Did I miss something? Isn't A a vowel?

Alright I made a considerable blunder there. I misread part of the orginal question. I have corrected the orginal post to what I believe is the correct answer. There is no need however for your smug responses. I don't have time to proof read all my posts in detail and we all make genuine mistakes somtimes.

hahah...you fail.

No one "deserves" anything in this final, unless you stipulate that the better player "deserves" to win. The fact that Djokovic beat Federer is irrelevent.

I think that this one is up for grabs. I don't think either one is dominant over the other; both players have been playing quite well... although from what I've seen, Tsonga has been far more impressive. I just don't know how his game will match with Djokovic's... I'm going to vote for Tsonga taking it in 4, but I'm guessing it may even be 3.

I like Djokovic in 3 or 4 sets. Can't see Tsonga winning...Novak looks better than I've ever seen him before.

Tsonga in four.

Biggest difference is Tsonga is a smarter player and has more gears.

Did you see how Djokovic started going to the drop shot and did a tweener when he had better options? Tsonga doesn't make those mistakes.

Tsonga played his three sets three different ways. In the first set, he rallied quietly until he got a ball he liked, then crushed it. In the second, he came to net and hit those crazy volleys. In he third, the volleys weren't working so he reverted to going for more and regular old shot-making. His first serve is more reliable too.

Tsonga seems to play within himself and isn't streaky. I like his chances despite being the underdog.

My only hesitation is that beating Fed on hard courts is a much bigger accomplishment than beating Nadal on hard courts.

So I could be wrong!!

Tsonga in 4.

However, someone said that this hasn't been the best Aussie Open. While it probably isn't the best ever, I think some truly great tennis has been played. Maybe not so much in the latter stages of the tournamnet (quarters and semis), however I haven't seen 3rd and 4th round matches like this Aussi Open in a while, which are the rounds I really enjoy (i.e. Federer vs Tipsaravic, Roddick's match, hewitt vs. bhaggy) I think this tournament has been exciting and very very good tennis because of the drama that has unfolded in the earlier rounds.
