The Big 3 era ends

Sinner and Alcaraz being now the respective #1 and #2. Djokovic fading once for all. Nadal said goodbye at the FO

Here end the era of the Big 3 once for all. A era who lasted 20 years, from Fébruary 2004 (The start of Federer dominance after his AO win) to now (Djokovic losing the #1 definitively)

The WTF Finals 2023 was in reality the last hurrah of the Big 3. We thought that Djokovic was the peak of his powers - dismantling Alcaraz and Sinner - and that he would be still dominant in 2024, but I had the slight feeling that the great tale of Djokovic ended. He erased all the records and wanted to prove a last time that he was able to hang with the youngsters. When we are thinking about this, it was inconceivable that Djokovic would keep his insane level at 37 y.o and with no more to achieve. The decline happen when we doesn't expect to. And the Sinner victory at the Davis Cup was a premonition of the changing of the guard.

We would have loved that the passing of the torch be completely symbolic win a triumph of Alcaraz over Djokovic but it wasn't to be. It's simply the Father Time who defeated finally Djokovic like it defeated Nadal. Injuries forced them to withdraw from a important GS match.

But it was still beautiful to see Djokodal fighting with what remained of their powers. Nadal against Zverev showing glimpses of the champion he was at the FO, Djokovic epic comebacks against Musetti and Cerundolo

The Big 3 era ends. And God knows how it spoiled us. But another is starting, maybe the Alcaraz... and Sinner era. One thing is sure, Alcaraz is the true heir of the Big 3. He already delivered 2 epic 5 set GS Finals. The succession is assured.

Novak was there?

He’s still taking notes on the competition.

No way he is done.

And I don’t think he is done winning.

I would still wait until the end of the year. If we get to a point where Djokovic no longer holds any of the Slams or YEC (or, at this rate, any of the Masters), then we're officially in the End Game

Djokovic can maybe still win a Master 1000, make still deep runs in GS, even a final, but his days of winning are over.

Maybe he has still a ultimate GS in him, like Sampras at the USO 2002, but with Alcaraz and Sinner, and a still strong Zverev, it's hard to see him winning big titles at 37 y.o. He has nothing to prove anymore.

The Wimbledon 2023 final was exciting, this RG final was not.

37 years old Djokovic is still the clear favorite for every tournament in this asterisk era. In fact, nobody beat him in DO this year.

Nadal said he may play RG 2025 though. He'll also definetely play the Olympics.

Your main point stands though, that Nadovic are in the eclipse of their careers.
Nadal and Alcaraz will seek to win Olympic gold in doubles and perhaps face each other in singles.

We also pretty much saw the end of Murray and Wawrinka here. The other two big names from that era.

Nadal losing in the first round in straights, and Djokovic unable to defend the title and number one ranking due to injury just seemed symbolic.

It was a crazy ride, but all come to an end. Tennis is in good hands with the new blood.

why care ... they gave us so much great tennis, they can retire in peace. I have seen a lot of great matches this year, without Federer, Nadal & Djokovic ... we dont need them to "safe" something ...

Another sign of the end of an era: I think this is the first time since 2003 that consecutive slam finals featured none of the Big 3. There’ve been individual slam finals with none of them but not two in a row – not since the first two slams in 2003.

Also, three of the four slams are now being held by two players who are much younger, Sinner is 22 and Alcaraz is 21.

That should have happened ages ago. And even now, Djokovic losing to them in Wimbledon and AO was shocking.

Whether it should have happened ages ago or not, Alcaraz and Sinner did what they had to do. They now own the first three slams and the world number one ranking between them, plus three masters.

I see some on X are saying Nadal/Djokovic would have beat Alcaraz today. The reality is either would have lost in straight sets as neither has that Zverev serve which was the only thing keeping Alcaraz at bay as it was affecting Carlos mentally on his own service games putting more pressure on him to hold because he was so worried about Zverev's serve, i think Zverev won 15 or so straight points on serve.
Current Rafa and Novak would have suffered an absolute beatdown as every one of their service games would have been a challenge to hold and ultimate the age difference would have told, so this event panned out much as you and I thought it would. Zverev called Carlos a beast in his presser and he is right. He got mauled eventually and right now he is way fitter than Nadal and Djokovic.
Today officially ends the Big 3 Era no question about it.

Question...what if Djokovic comes back and wins the US Open?

Agree my friend.

For two sets against Musetti and one set against Cerundolo, Djokovic played like the 2023 aggressive player and made me believe he can beat Sinner and Alcaraz at Slams. Too bad he tweaked his knee right after. If he has a good recovery from meniscus surgery which is quite possible for a fitness fanatic like him, I think this thread will prove to be premature.

This injury and the recovery needed might give Djokovic the extra motivation boost he needs to come back on tour and take his place at the top which he occupied before the injury. The guy likes to work hard and like all champions, he enjoys the pain and effort it takes to become a champion.

the bi3 era ended when fed retired or rather after AO20. and in the last 13 years (since 2011, actually he had 2 eras 5.5 years long each, 11-RG16 and W18-23) we lived in nole's era where he took 23 slams and fed, rafa, muzza and wawa together 21. he was 8 times YE#1 and these together 4 times. he won 6 YWTFs and these 4 won 2 and he won 35 masters and this 4 38. he spent over 8 years as #1.
