The big three(and others) in 60 years

Fifty years from now, a gathering of cyborgs are discussing how the early 2000s era(our era), would stack up against theirs. So they travel back in time and ask us who we would like to be transported into the future to represent our era (It’s entirely possible that the cyborgs will simply check this very thread in order to make their decision).

I’m not extremely confident about my selection (so read the responses, cyborgs), but I’ll go with peak Stan. I think that in 60 years players will be serving in the 160s, so Stan could use his block back return to get in play, and in the future maybe those guys won’t be used to coming forward. The one handed backhand might be a thing of the past, so Stan’s powerful one hander could throw them off a bit. Their balls will probably be pretty high bouncing, which Stan can handle. Stan wouldn’t win many free points on his serve since the future players will most likely be amazing returners, but Federer probably wouldn’t have much luck either. Plus, Fed’s backhand would be a liability. The future best player will probably be a better version of Djoker or Nadal, so I think it’d be important to send someone who’s not just an inferior model of their guys. Any thoughts? Imagine that our guy is inserted into a future tournament as a high seed.

You're a serious overthinker

Nick Kyrgios is our man.

He is unpredictable and he knows how to cuss. As long as the Rules of Tennis do not overly punishing cussing then Nick will always confuse any Cyborg player. They will be unable to handle unpredictability and proceed to self destruct.

But and even better option would be to go back to 1980 and "select" McEnroe.

In 60 years all tennis aficionados will be fans of robots: a logical evolution of now, when only some are fans of robots.

Also, no one will be watching tennis. The fans will be following the statistics. Moar than enough. A completely safe environment too.

That's right.
In 60 years we'll be onto COVID-79. It will be sooooooooo................................ deadly!
Most will be locked down for most of their lives.
Poor souls. :(

Roger has conveniently scheduled some surgery during this hiatus.
Possibly in the hope the whole COVID-19 would blow over by the time he was ready to return.
But the way things are going, the COVID thing may continue for at least another 12 months, perhaps even longer.
There is a small possibility we have seen the last of Federer playing Pro. Tennis at the elite level.

Will be very interested to see what he does IF (and it is a big "IF") the Australian Open is conducted in January next year.

Let's face it: in 60 years from now barely anyone will be remembering and talking about the current "big3". Who's talking about Rosewell and Laver now? Only fanatics on the history of the game. That's sad, right, but that's just how the human nature works.

Saving 7 MPs in his last win would be a helluva swansong.

Who's talking about ... Laver now? Only fanatics on the history of the game. That's sad, right, but that's just how the human nature works.

Laver has a famous Stadium named after him ... Rod Laver Arena.
He also has an elite Tennis event named after him ... The Laver Cup.
Only male player in the history of the sport to achieve the GRAND SLAM two times.

Federer will always be remembered for the number of Wimbledon Singles Titles he has and for his textbook tennis strokes.
Nadal will be remembered for the number of Roland Garros Singles Titles he has and for his Topspin Forehand.
Djokovic will be remembered for the number of Australian Open Titles he has and as the President of the Republic of Serbia.

For his Pro. ATP career? For sure.

But I get the impression that Roger Federer will continue to be involved in the sport and do some great things for it long after his Pro. Playing Days are over. He has already transcended the sport.

And like Agassi, I dare say Federer's influence will be widely felt in a lot of non-tennis related areas.

This one's very likely indeed. Hopefully he'll be better than some of his predecessors.

McEnroe might be the only old timer who people talk about as having some ineffable qualities that might not come again. I think that many people (maybe me included) would say that if he were transported from his prime to today’s game he might be able make some magic happen. Disregarding rackets. I think that they will be intrigued by Federer in the same way. He’s got the magical quality that will make him a mystery to future folks and they will be curious about his translation to their modern game. More so than the brute force guys who we know will almost definitely be surpassed by harder, more consistent hitters in the future.

A lot of it is going to depend on what happens to the rules of the game, and how / if that effects the equipment players can use.

Remember, modern sport is Professional. It is primarily about MAKING MONEY. There is a whole supply chain of money that flows from Product Sales / Media Rights all the way down to the Players themselves.

If the source of funds dries up because the sport becomes less attractive / popular, then the sport begins to die.

If future audiences tire of Robotic play that is facilitated by modern tennis equipment then something will have to change.

It is difficult to compare the players of 50 years ago with the players of today simply because the racquets, strings, and footwear are so different. A lot of high level tennis is played indoors now and that affects the sport.

So there may be a need to make the sport a lot tougher to make it attractive. This might mean a move back to smaller hoops, no poly string, shorter breaks between points and games, single Serve per point, fixed match durations, etc.

Did you see any of the UTS Tournaments / Matches conducted in Europe last month? That could well be the future of the sport.

I think the biggest advancement will be the rapid learning technologies that are starting to come out already. Hooking electrodes or whatever to your brain to accelerate learning. There will be kids mastering the game in a few days time. That would mean maybe hundreds of thousands of professional level players competing with each other. Not sure how that’s gonna go down, but recreational tennis will be fun.
