The Borg curse (RG approaching)

Andres

G.O.A.T.
With Roland Garros approaching, one cannot stop wondering and thinking about how difficult it is to break Borg's record. Maybe there IS a Borg curse, after all.

He had the 5 consecutive Wimbys record: Fed tied those five, and when shooting for the 6th, BAM, Nadal wins.

He had the 4 consecutive Roland Garros record: Nadal tied those four, and when trying to make history, BAM! Söderling catches fire and defeats him.

Twice he won RG without losing a set: Nadal tied this record in 2008 and 2010, but with Djokovic or Federer, it seems highly unlikely that he'll go through another French Open without dropping sets.

He has the 6 Roland Garros record: Could this be the end of the Borg curse, or will it stay haunting the tour for decades to come?

There's also the curse of being 25 going on 26 years of age. McEnroe, Borg etc were all finished winning slams when that happened. Particularly the grinders, they all seem to be finished around that age.

For me, Nadal is (by his own incredibly high standards) moving very slowly, and has been since the USO last year. I actually think Federer will beat Nadal on clay this year whenever they play.

He's not complaining about injuries, and I think that's Uncle Toni's doing. He made a public point that he wasn't going to pretend he was always confident like Toni always demanded last year, it looked like they might break up, but it didn't work and Nadal is now closer to Uncle Tony than ever. This year Nadal is actually complaining about people talking about his injuries. I think he's finally starting to lose the war against them though.

One does not simply break Borg's record.

There is only Djoker really. There is no other player who can "get hot" and take him out.

Rodge best of 5 is still under ?

Isner could be a threat, but he has to make it to Quarters and by then the odds are not good.

Ferrer, Belluci, .....nah.

Murray? what are his chances making the SF? Actually Murray has had good clay results recently.

Maybe history will repeat itself with Murray winning RG after 4 consecutive GS losses like coach Lendl :)

Wow, I was totally going to quote LOTR, but when quoting this I can see the broken image link telling me you were already doing so.
what ??? racks brain ... do you mean "One does not simply walk into Mordor" ? or something to that effect.

What about the so-called AO curse ? Joker beat Roger in 2011 and defended his title at 2012. So i take it that one is broken ??

till Clarky21 says:
"The way Nadal has been playing lately there is no way in hell is breaking Borg's record. Nadal might as well stop further embarrassment and just retire the way Borg did."

Soderling will temp come out of mono from Borg Curse to prevent Nadal and win his first RG...Pannata style.

 What injuries? Is it an ironical post:confused: Nadal is playing his best clay court tennis right now. That is why he's arriving at RG without a set dropped on red clay for the first time in his career.

Why are you so overly confident? Didn't 2009 teach you anything?

and what did that teach you? that under rare circumstances nadal may lose at RG against a zoning hardhitter. just there is no hardhitter he could meet

Maybe not of Soderling's caliber, but Raonic and Isner are both in Nadal's draw. Both of them could prove to be a huge problem for him if they should meet. There is no reason to be so cocky and overly confident after all of the losses Nadal has taken over the past year. I would expect nothing less from Veroniquem the Fed Hater, though.

Raphla has a chance to break so many curses and jinxes by winning this RG :

(1) The Borg curse
(2) Simon Reed curse
(3) The pink outfit jinx (think 2009)

Anything else ?

Nadal will be just fine. He's already broken the curse by losing in 2009.

/jinx mode off/
Au contraire.
Him losing in 2009 only reinforced the curse. If he had won in 2009, he would have 5 consecutive FOs.
One does not simply break Borg's record (of 4 in a row), therefore he had to lose. And he lost.

Also Borg set the record for 8 consecutive years with a least one slam title from 1974-1981, which both Sampras and Federer equalled in 2000 and 2010 respectively, but couldn't break.

Also Nadal and Federer teamed up to equal Borg's 3 consecutive French Open-Wimbledon doubles from 2008-2010, but couldn't break it when Nadal lost to Djokovic in last year's Wimbledon final :).

This is the day. As far as we know, one does not simply break Borg's records.

Is this where it ends?

Didn't Borg have the record for the most Wimbledon titles overall, in the open era, until Sampras broke it?

i thought the record was 6, not 5?

You are correct, at RG it is six.

However, Borg held the record at W with five wins at one point.

So, a Borg record had already been broken, since Sampras won more Wimbledons overall than Borg. The curse is not water tight, so to speak.

well, rafa got his 8th MC...he will get his 7th FO...and with any luck its an 8 hr final that will destroy both their bodies so Fed can get his 7th Wimby :)

lol

Laver has four I think.

Borg though won all five in the Open Era. So he had the record, until Sampras broke it.

Laver has 4 or 5 Wimbledons, depending on whether you count the 1967 Wimbledon Pro tournament. I believe 2012 will be the first time since 1967 that there will be two tournaments played at Wimbledon.

Laver has 2 Wimbledons in the open era.

Just going with the Open Era. :)

A British tennis player is rolling over in his grave when he heard what you wrote.

The pink on his shoes is too little for him to lose. :)

On a serious note: Curses are made up things. People are just bored.
