The Brandon Bandwagon - a Brandon Nakashima appreciation thread

Looks like he gets Zverev next which will be a tough ask, but happy to see him get a couple of wins at RG.

He took Zed to 4 sets two years ago at the USO. Still, he's untested on the clay. Maybe all of that hard work Baez put in will create some doubts?

Yeah, I think Z might be a little tired physically and mentally after that 5 set match. Still, he has a better draw than Korda.

Umbrellas are prudent in Surbiton this week and the participants in the Challenger tournament currently being held there will have to be as patient off the court as they should be on it. Only one main draw singles match has so far been completed and there is also still one match to be finished in the qualifying event. The latter circumstance means that six players in the main draw still don't know who their first-round opponent will be.

Brandon Nakashima is down to play Marc-Andrea Hüsler of Switzerland in the first round today but, given the current weather forecast, there is no guarantee that either that or any other match will actually make it to the court on Tuesday.

The rain has relented, at least temporarily, and it is a warmish day here in London. Down in Surbiton, several first-round matches were completed earlier today, one of which pitted Brandon Nakashima against Marc-Andrea Hüsler. The latter player made the better start to the encounter, taking the first set and coming back from a break down to equalize in the second, which ended in a tiebreak.

There, the Swiss player had a match point at 7-6, a second at 8-7 and a third at 10-9, but Nakashima was not to be denied, taking the tiebreak on his sixth set point at 11-10 (he had led by 6 points to 2). The American then broke twice in the third set for what had at one stage looked like a very unlikely victory.

Final score: 4-6, 7-6(10), 6-2.

Brandon fell to Murray in Surbiton, but overcomes Tommy Paul in three tiebreaks at the Libema Open.

A straight sets win earlier today for Brandon Nakashima over his compatriot Sam Querrey in second-round action in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Nakashima won 7-6(6), 7-6(4) to reach the quarter-finals, where he will face the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

This will be a good test, he lost to Mannarino in Delray Beach then turned around and beat him at Indian Wells, but on grass this is a much tougher matchup for him.

Earlier today in 's-Hertogenbosch, that French grass-court monster Adrian Mannarino unceremoniously pulled Brandon Nakashima off the bandwagon before violently beating him 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4.

Yep, Mannarino is a monster on grass.

Brandon Nakashmia had two very good wins over fellow Americans Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson at the weekend to qualify for the main draw at this week’s Eastbourne tournament. Earlier today, Nakashima continued his good form by easily beating home hope Jay Clarke, 6-1, 6-3, in first-round action. The American’s second-round opponent will be the top seed, Cameron Norrie. Their head-to-head currently stands at one victory each.

Not afraid to approach the net (), much improved serve (), steady as anyone (). Great match today, and looking forward to see not only his next match but how this will all help him during the upcoming hard court season.

The comparisons to Norrie are completely wrong-headed.

A decent opportunity for Brandon to reach the 4th round. He faces Galan next, a player who has had a great year on the Challenger Tour, but who seems to prefer the clay courts. Nonetheless, Galan has beaten Isner and Norrie before.

Great win today ! Shapo is definitely going through a slump right now but it's a W regardless. Would love to see Brandon get into the fourth round.

Great win today and he's into the fourth round, haven't been able to see any of his matches on TC or ESPN yet, hopefully they will show his next round.

Next stop the travelling circus that is Nick Kyrgios; hope he can stay focused with all the mayhem that will inevitably accompany the match if he starts strongly (NK generally fine when on top).

I was there, technically I wasn't there for the match but I heard gossip of this newcomer giving fritz as well as one of the ryan brother a beatdown in Hawaii Tennis Open. If nothing else nakashima prob lit a fire under fritz's ass to get better. I kinda believe fritz consider nakashima his rival from that point on. Even he was kinda dissappointed and kinda implied he would definitely not come back next year not due to covid but prob the competition is so lackluster it's a waste of his time. That and he came only because someone pulled out and he wasn't the first choice.
Part of me is kinda mad that these tennis players basically came to chill. I know nishikori is injured and didn't play but advertisment kinda implied he would play. Then Querrey made up for it with his serve. The woman's side kinda boring and not really memorable.

If anyone can stay focused, it's Brandon. The question is whether focus will be enough to put Nick out.

Brandon lost to Jordan "JT" Thompson the last time they played in Houston, but he gets the win today, and will now face another Aussie in John Millman.

Brandon looks like he's been putting in a lot of fitness work. Not that he was heavy before, but some of the baby fat on his face is gone and it looks like he lost some weight.

Brandon claws his way back in the first set breaker, and the bandwagon rolls on...he will face Frances Tiafoe next.

Honestly I thought he would lose to Millman because of the conditions, that was a good win, I feel like he's due for a win over Frances.

Brandon reached the quarterfinals in Atlanta last week, and he will have to take down Miomir Kecmanovic if he wants to match that showing.

Didn't he make the finals in Mexico last year ? That's going to be tough to match this year.

Kec put the brakes on the Brandwagon ( ), but Brandon has 1-2 record against Norrie, so not the worst draw.

Nakashima will face [17] Grigor Dimitrov, after each won their first match in straight sets. Who will win?

Compared to his results last summer, when he reached back-to-back finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta, Brandon has cooled off. However, he did reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon, where he pushed the eventual finalist, Kyrgios, to 5 sets.

I think this cooling off period is normal on the ATP tour as the other players get used to seeing these guys and figure out how to play them. I think the important thing is whether or not he is taking steps to improve and make his own adjustments to get to the next level, he's 0-3 against Tiafoe and has lost twice to Norrie, but he has some quality wins this year over Paul, Shapovalov, etc. I feel like he definitely can beat Grigor, but it won't be an easy match.

He may not have tremendous weapons but he does seem to be a stable player mentally and emotionally and doesn't beat himself which by itself will likely keep him around for a while.
