Just a reflection...
I missed the women's final (for my son's swim meet -- they won, very few people care) but I just caught up with the post-match press conferences of both Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina.
So, I'll hope to catch match highlights later, but for now, I just want to post that it was a pleasure to watch their pressers (other than a couple stupid questions from reporters). I can't imagine how either could have handled these moments - and those questions - any better than they did.
Going into Wimbledon, I wanted Swiatek to keep her streak going, and even though she didn't, she looks like the real deal.
This forum is driven by GOAT talk and I've hardly been immune to it.
Or if not GOAT talk, there's handwringing about the failure of the younger players to become ATGs or their supposed lack of dedication and who knows what else.
Indeed, we're kind of waiting for that next great player on the women's tour (okay, both tours) or that great young rivalry, or two.
But take a step back, and forget about all the other stuff. There are plenty of amazing players, and very good, interesting/impressive people on both tours.
A 23-year-old woman from Kazakhstan just defeated a 27-year-old woman from Tunisia in the Wimbledon final and afterward, while operating in a foreign language, handled their respective press conferences with grace, class and humility. Right now, that's enough for me.
