The cost to play in a USTA league

I never played in a USTA league and I am not even a member. Today I played with someone who is the captain of a 4.0 team. He asked me to join his team. I am wondering how much it cost to play in a team like this and what the cost are. I am in suburban New York.

Ask the captain. I varies from state to state. Some places only charge for USTA Fee and League Fee. Others, such as where I live, we play indoor and have to pay for court time.

For Northern VA here is the breakdown - note, I rounded the numbers:

USTA Membership - $30
USTA Team Fee - $20
Cost of court time for league matches - $15/match

Assuming you don't have to pay for court time, assume as least $50 for USTA Membership (if you are not a member) and to join the team.

I play in a neighborhood league here in Richmond. We don't have court fees. League fees are typically in the $30-$40 range, plus USTA membership. When we have a home match and it rains, a local club allows us to use the indoor courts for free (some of our players are members).

I am just getting back into the game after 10+ years of not playing at all. I am in Northern VA. How do I go about getting started with league play? It's hard as hell to find anyone to play tennis. It's driving me nuts. Tennis in this area used to be huge.

Holy bankruptcy, batman!

That's cheap for indoor time in my area!

IMHO - it still is.

If you want to go the USTA route, contact homecourt tennis and ask the director about joining a team. FYI - official leagues won't start up until next year - right now we basically have fun leagues. http://www.homecourttennis.com/

What level do you play? I'm on a 3.5 team.

If you live in or near Arlington, they have a great and very active local tennis association. http://www.actatennis.org/

Reston also has a good tennis association and a strong tennis community - but it can be pricey to join if you aren't a Reston resident. http://www.reston.org/parks_rec/p_tennis.html

They also have leagues, etc in Herndon: http://www.herndon-va.gov/Content/Parks_rec/Indoor_tennis_center/default.aspx

If you are looking to hit, post to this this thread - it a group of people who live in VA/DC/MD and get together to hit occasionally: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=130010&page=637

I'm really unsure of my level at this point. I used to be a solid 4.5-5 in high school, but that was many, many moons ago. I am so overweight currently it's hard for me to play full matches. I played 2 sets a month ago. The first time out was pretty rough, the 2nd time out I actually surprised myself and won pretty handily against a 3-3.5 rated player. However, I spent several weeks after that with a sore shoulder. Getting old sucks. I'm in Gainesville, VA. I work in Herndon. Thank you for the recommendations.
