The Cult of PT57

Head is actually the most common brand among the ATP top 50. There might be a lot more Yonexes in the bottom 50 - I don't know.
Latest breakdown I have goes like this for the top 100 ATP:
Wilson: 26
Head: 23
Babolat: 22
Yonex: 17
Tecnifibre: 6
Dunlop: 5
Artengo: 1

Interesting…so are not that many Yonex, but still catching up from behind.

In WTA there must be a lot more Yonex players than in ATP

And what would identify it as Pro Stock if it were? Just asking for my edification. Would frame colors be different or would there be any specific marking? Thanks
First off it’s not a PT57A because it has TwinTube construction. Second it’s not pro stock because it doesn’t have silicone inside the hairpin with a hole in the buttcap.

Hi! I recently bought a PT57A and would appreciate you guys inputs and suggestions.
It is a extended lenght (69,6cm or 27,40inches) 18x20, 312grams, 316mm balance, 310SW, 59RA. All stats are unstrung.
I come from a H22, and would like it to be a bit more controlled than that.
It probably needs a bit of lead, not much.
What would you suggest in terms of strings and customization?
Thank you!

Hi pt57 gurus
l’ve got a question to you.
i’m a long time PT630 user. But they have been broken for last years and i’ve no ability to buy some instead. I’ve played with Gravity pro this year but not happy with it. I’m considering something with less head size and sw. May be Prestige pro and Ultra pro (tuned to PP specs) are my options.
as i can‘t demo these racquets i ask for your opinion which one is better choice if we keep pt630 in mind
thanks an advance.

I think Prestige Pro will be the closest modern match to the PT630. You can customize it to your preferred specs, but the feel is similar. It also has the CAP grommets that your PT630 has. 18x20 but maybe 16x19 (I haven’t tried) is also worth a demo since it’s now available.

Edit: Nvm on the 16x19 since you can’t demo. I’d go for the PP 18x20.

CX 200 Tour 18x20 with 3-6g in the hoop.

Off the top of my head that still use the PT57A and PT57E
Murray
Simon
Virginie Razzano
Cuevas
Tommy Haas
Florian Mayer
I think Paolo Lorenzi
Carlos Berloq

Head has done a good job of getting rid of players on these racquets.

anybody know the updated list of current users? off the top of my head: Marin Cilic, Fran Cerundolo, Karatsev, Koepfer, and Hanfmann

Bump up with my new bumblee-beeeeeee.

Id love to get one of the pt57A at some point. Previous trade attempts fell through, and I'm not spending "pro stock" prices for an old frame.

PT2.0 is the closest Ill get

If you like 18x20, any of the retail PT280/630s really feel no different than what you're likely to get in a PT57A pro stock. The pro stocks can vary in stiffness though. And the pro stocks also allow you to customize to a lighter SW if you want. The retail frames have more weight baked in and not much you can do about it.

If you like 16x19 then there really isn't much of a retail equivalent to the PT57A out there among new or old frames IMO. Ultra Pro is sorta similar but still not the same feel.

I've had the Ultra Pro (paid $100 for them a few years back), and at right point had 6 or 7 PT2.0s. I kept one, I actually prefer the PC2.0 over it's larger brother. I still have 2 of those, including one brand new one

Hi everyone, in need of some help with grommets information.

I recently got a pt630 with TK57 grommets in good condition. I measured the swingweight and it's 315 unstrung, which is a lot, so I'm thinking of changing the grommets to non CAP.
I've been searching the forum and read here that TK231 grommets (MG radical MP) would fit, but with a lot of sweat and tears.
It's possible to get the original pt280 grommets (TK55A) on ****, but they come with a hefty price as they are hard to come by.
My question is, will the installation of TK231 be much more difficult than the original TK55A due to it not having a perfect fit? Or is it going to be the same effort for both grommets? If it's that much more difficult than I'll just try and get my hands on the original TK55A.

@dr325i would appreciate your take in the matter :)

Thanks everyone and cheers!

If you are doing them for the first time, it will be "difficult' no matter what. In the factory, they use different tools and heat to install them, you probably do not have those handy.
Worst case, I can install them for you (if you're in the USA) as I have done it many many times before...

@dr325i thanks for the quick reply!
Unfortunately I'm not at in the US so I'll have to do it by myself, and it is the first time I'm doing it (I do have a heat gun and an awl).
Would you suggest to go ahead and get TK231? or TK55A? regarding me wanting to have a perfect fit, and the level of difficulty of putting them on?

Cheers!

You can buy the pro tour 2.0 grommets and trim them
It's easy!
You can trim the top part to lower the swingweight while keeping the twistweight, or trim the side parts (which I like less than the first option)
IME pt57a without caps at 3 and 9 loses a bit it's stability and feel.
Enjoy!

PS : the Chinese made capts are slightly lighter than the OG protour caps so before trimming them try to measure the swingweight to see if it's already lowered

Thank for the tips!

Regarding the first option, do you mean to cut the CAP at the hoop? Won't it leave it without a head guard?
Regarding option no 2, could always add a bit lead at 3 and 9, I think swingweight would be reduced significantly this way. Anyway I'll measure swingweight and twistweight before and after any modifications.
Cheers!

Yes Im talking about the non headguard option... Its a bit strange but it works.
By trimming the sides youll take off around 10g of weight which will lower the SW by 10 to 15 points

Funny, sounds like a balding pro tour (or touring pro). Makse sense since this frame so old!
I think I'll keep the top from the fear of scratching it, but I took note of what you said regarding the frame needing torsional stability. Will test and add lead on 9 and 3 if needed.

Cheers!

FWIW if you're still deliberating (or if this is useful to anyone else in the future reading this), I have installed 6x TK231 grommets on my Zebras. It's definitely doable and they fit just fine. But as @dr325i mentioned, installing grommets/bumperguards is not an easy task regardless of if you're retro-fitting or not. I would strongly suggest getting an awl and a heat gun. You'll still need a healthy dose of patience (go slow!), but these tools make the process SO MUCH easier.

Also, if you're worried about weight saving like I was, I forget the exact amount but compared to the original bumperguards that were on the Zebas, the TK231s are noticeably lighter. Pair the installation of those with a leather grip and you will have a considerably more head-light stick than was stock (and maybe even better looking to boot!).

Pro Tour 630 with reverse hybrid gut / poly is just too good. Next string-job im gonna try Velocity MLT 130 in the M and RPM Power Bronze 125 in the X, 51/47 Lbs

Cilic beating Draper yesterday with his old-school power game had me thinking about old school players like Berdych and Soderling.

The game today is more about spin on most shots and power for putaway shots. It was so interesting seeing Draper get exasperated with so many power shots which he was clearly not used to.
