don't know much about lower-ranked players, so just picked from top 20ish. also, for me, flashy is nice (gulbis) but so is consistency.

forehands

1. Federer
2. Nadal
3. Del Potro
4. Verdasco
5. Cilic
6. Gonzalez
7. Djokovic
8. Roddick
9. Davydenko

3. Murray
4. Davydenko
5. Soderling
6. Federer
7. Del Potro
8. Wawrinka
9. Gasquet
10. Nadal (makes it into the top 10 on that crosscourt alone, as well as the consistency...plus, I've never seen Almagro play)

On second thought, if all players are at their best I'd move Nadal down to 10th in that list and move Federer (just so much more variety) up.

I agree with this list. Maybe you've been a bit generous with Tsonga's but other than that very reasonable.

Lol at Federer having a better backhand than Nadal, this place is a JOKE sometimes. Nadal makes less errors, can hit with more power, hits it better on the run and returns better with his backhad.

and then when it comes to hardcourts all he has is a rally backhand because he can't get to any balls. he cranks up his backhand for a winner every 4 matches, other than that his winners are passing shots which for me is the only reason he is in the top 10

Nadal's backhand is the worst in the current top 5, the only shot hes capable of hitting winners with is cross court (and thats mostly against Fed).

Lol @ Nadal having the worst backhand in the Top 5??! You can't be serious. That's one of the most consistent shots in the game. It's not as flashy as some other backhands, but it produces difficult spin and placement is incredible. Passing shots with backhand?? best in the game!!! I prefer Nadal's over Djokovic. Only Murray of the Top 5 has a better one.

+1. Lol at Federer being ahead of Gasquet. Federer drools when he watches Gasquet's backhand.

If you only count topspin BH, you're right, but Fed's slice is FAR superior to Nadal's (And everyone else on tour) and he can do just about anything with it.

BTW I'm not sure I would say Fed has the best FH today. I think it's declined and it can become a liability more than a weapon a lot of times. I would say it's top 5, but not the best anymore.

actually I agree on everything in that post! you are still the nicest and most honest Fed-fan around here!

Holmes: How peculiar. I was about to start writing my thoughts on this, when it looks like someone has 95% written it already.

i.e. Sir Federer's backhand slice and angles created with his TS, and his forehand is too inconsistent to be at no.1.

Well said P_Agony.

Look at this way, everyone else in the top 5/top 6 can hit (BH) DTL winners, except Nadal, his DTL is just a rally shot which he sometimes try to wrong foot the opponent with, and often fails.

1 Roger Federer
3 Novak Djokovic
4 Andy Murray
5 Juan Martin Del Potro
6 Nikolay Davydenko

Not to mention all of these guys can slice better than Nadal.

As much as I love Federer's forehand when it is on, purely because of the potency and accuracy.

As much as I admire Rafa's forehand, especially on the clay.

The Del Potro forehand is just sick. With his wing span, and ability to generate incredible velocity, he can punch holes through any player from nearly any where on the court. When he is on, it's something to behold.

I already realized from your first list that you were considering the DTL winners as a barometer. While it's true Nadal will not produce many DTL winners, it's a half blind argument. Though he won't make the many winners DTL his use of angles, crosscourt/insideout/DTL often set him up to win the point.
His backhand is just so ridiculously steady. Defensively, there's no better backhand. Spins are tremendous on clay and it can translate into a more penetrating shot in Hardcourt/Clay. Anyone remember Australian Open '09?
DTL winners are nice but they are rare in and of themselves. You can have your handful each match, I'll take Nadals backhand which will never miss.

When he flattens it out and rips it it's pretty good. And even when he just spins it in its not horrible.

Yeah but he never flattens it out, at least not for the past few years. And honestly I think that it's spinny and non-penetrating, just watch his match against Gonzo at the Aus Open. What wins Roddick matches is is insanely good serve and his extremely good mental strength.

ANY pro can play a backhand like nadal does...(just getting it in, and being consistent hitting them crosscourt) its just, most go for winners every once in a while on the backhand side. you've got to realize nadal plays a different style than most, and his backhand caters to him...federer has won A LOT with his backhand, so it obviously caters to him.

True I didn't see that match. So I guess I was slightly wrong by saying he never flattens his forehand out. If he really did, then that's good news because he might be able to actually challenge Fed now. But seriously, over the past few years, why has he nearly all the time just looped his forehand over?

even Cilic has a better backhand than JMDP
but his forehand is lethal.

I find it irritating to see that Gulbis is not mentioned anywhere here. Agreed, the occasions whence he has been "on" have been few and far between for the last few years, but lets recall a few proofs of him just simply having some of the best, if not the best groundies in the world:
The Robredo Beatdown, 2007 USO - takes down Tommy Robredo 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 in a mind-blowing forehand display. Link here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3381x_ernests-gulbis-v-tommy-robredo-high_sport
Madrid Open 2008 - loses a close match to Nadal in 3 sets, backhand on absolute fire. Link to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btYGqak2_bM&feature=PlayList&p=7C27D1DD5066E3CB&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=10
Breakout on the Big Scene - Rome Semis 2010 - pushes Nadal to the brink with a broken forehand, nearly beats The King of Clay with nothing but a backhand, a serve, a bucketload of dropshots, and sheer guts. I think we all know where to find this.
If we were looking at the rest of his game, this year's Delray Beach Final against Dr. Ivo could be mentioned as maybe the best return of serve display this year, and the Rome Semi was an awesome show of serving for both firsts and seconds.
