Nobody has ever defended Madrid on hc or clay since its creation in 2002.

2013 Rafael Nadal
2012 Roger Federer
2011 Novak Djokovic
2010 Rafael Nadal
2009 Roger Federer
2008 Andy Murray
2007 David Nalbandian
2006 Roger Federer
2005 Rafael Nadal
2004 Marat Safin
2003 Juan Carlos Ferrero
2002 Andre Agassi

NadBull is definitely not defending his crown there..

So only Rome this year??? This clay season has been so amazing until now..

I am calling no clay title (other than South America MM titles) for Nadal this year.

Yep, doesn't bode well for Nadal this year. He should probably take a break between USO and AO and come back stronger next year.

To follow the pattern since 2009, looks like Djokovic should win this year.

This is going to be a quite a challenge for Nadal. For the first time in a decade, Nadal is entering the deeper stages of the European clay season without a single title under his belt...and now he has to not only play on what is historically his worst clay court conditions, but he has to defend the title with almost zero momentum coming in.

I would like to see Nadal get some confidence back, he is severely lacking it at the moment, and the other players know that now is the time to strike. The battle to defend his domain is just getting more intense. To see Nadal entering Rome without a single clay title under his belt will be shocking, never would have expected this.

Just to be sure--did anyone check the colour of the clay at Madrid this year? ;)

Seriously, some blueness would be nice, one of these days, if only so that Federer has to defend and so doesn't remain the only undefeated tennis player on a surface *ever* without a modicum of a fight from the rest of the tour (and on clay, too--and in Spain, to add insult to injury).

Thanks for posting these stats. To be honest I didn't think Nadal would defend Madrid this year anyway and now I'm even more certain he won't!

It wasn't fair on Murray. He never really got the chance to defend Madrid because they moved the goalposts and changed the surface from his best to his worst by the time it came round again! Every other player on the list had the chance to defend on the same surface and in the same conditions. Bloody Tiriac!!

Seriously? You can say that with a straight face after looking at the line "2012 - Roger Federer - blue clay FTW"? ;)

Oops, forgot about the infamous blue clay experiment. So, both Andy and Novak got done over by that bloody Tiriac!

From 2009 - 2012, there was another pattern in that whoever won Madrid also went on to win Wimbledon. Of course it was broken last year.

The Madrid Masters was an indoor hardcourt masters event from 2002-2008. I personally have never seen it as the same tournament as the 2009-present Madrid Open on clay.

Federer is the only one to win it on all 3 surfaces

If you apply the same principle to other tournaments then Nadal should have swept the clay season again barring Madrid.

Yes. And Fed, who didn't get the chance to defend on that bloody surface on which he'll probably forever remain undefeated

Damn, you're right! So that's 3 defending champions that got shafted by Tiriac! IMO that guy should be made to pay each of them compensation to the value of what they could have won if he hadn't changed the surface and conditions when each of them tried to defend their title!

Hei Mainad don't worry ;)

Murray has 3 titles at the October masters.

And he also cruised impressively to a victory in 2010 ;)

I think he has the most titles at the October masters tournament

Yes, Tiriac is a troll indeed. Madrid tournament is the worst Masters by far for several reasons, one of them being Tiriac.

Nadal has a decent chance of doing it this year.. and if Djokovic wins it then he has a decent chance of doing it next year.
Tbh I don't care that much about defending titles. It's about winning them, it doesn't matter to me if you happen to have won the same title last year.
