The curse of Novak Djokovic, bad luck, or a weak era of grass?

An amazing and unprecedented occurrence from Wimbledon 2022 and 2021:

4 out of Novak Djokovic's 7 opponents from 2021 combined to win 0 matches at Wimbledon 2022.
Only one of Novak Djokovic's 7 opponents from Wimbledon 2021 won more than 1 match at Wimbledon 2022:

Matches won at Wimbledon 2022:
F Matteo Berrettini - 0
SF Denis Shapovalov - 1
QF Marton Fucsovics - 0
4R Cristian Garin - 4
3R Denis Kudla - 0
2R Kevin Anderson - 0
1R Jack Draper - 1

But wait - it gets even weirder, if you can believe it.

None of Novak Djokovic's 7 opponents from 2022 won more than 2 matches at Wimbledon in 2021, with only 2 players winning more than 1 match from the entire draw:

Matches won at Wimbledon 2021:
F Nick Kyrgios - 2
SF Cam Norrie - 2
QF Jannik Sinner - 0
4R Tim Van Rijthoven - 0
3R Miomir Kecmanovic - 1
2R Thanasi Kokkinakis - 0
1R Kwon Soon-Woo - 1

For comparisons sake, an oft-maligned draw - USO 2017 - featured a semifinalist who would go on to reach the finals in 2018, and a finalist who would return to the 4R in 2018.

So, is this the curse of Novak Djokovic, bad luck, or a weak era of grass?

El Shapo won 1 match this year

Pretty rude to put Berrettini in there when he won no matches because he withdrew and arguably was the most in-form grass player with 2 back to back titles.

It’s absurdly bad. W21/22, ao23 comically poor levels of resistance.

Wimbledon used to be pinnacle of tennis for me but last two editions have been a joke.

God, this is really horrendous...Why dont they just award the Wimb trophy to Djokovic and skip over to the HC season ?

If the entire world had only 2 great grass players, and one of them, Federer, had to retire, then of course the other, Djokovic, would dominate until he grows old.

It was just like Federer dominating Wimbledon at the beginning of his career.

Nah,, We don't have the Tsonga, Berdych, Cilic, Raonic, Nadal and even players who can threaten like Kandy/Isner and Querrey. The lesser we talk of grass the better.

No one wins consistently on grass except Djokovic anymore. Time to convert Wimbledon to clay as the European clay season is too short:happydevil:

Atp 125k futures event on grass would have a better draw than this.

I enjoyed them very much....especially the Kyrgios final, everyone was literally hoping Djo plays Kyrgios at Wimbledon...before the draw was announced.

The other part is also true. It is a shame you are skirting and not accepting it
He is better than the rest, what more can we say? There is no "strength of the era" indicator nor a way to compare levels across time. On top of that tech, surface, and training changes mean that the sport is a very different one than what was played years ago.

Grass field is garbage, not news. Djokovic is much better on fast hard court than grass but the comp on grass is so poor that he has a better chance of winning the next Wimby than AO.
It's sad.

When you have facts on your face that not a single top 10 has made a Wimb SF and most not even have made QF, those are not subjective matters. It is tangible, measurable and never seen before situation.

It is not hard to say 'Djokovic is a great grass court player, but he has weak competition there'.

Djokovic is too good. Sooner we realize it the better. He beat the best already multiple times, and he kept his longevity and skills and improved to be able to do what he does on grass. These invention barometers not gonna change much. Djokos greatness on grass is a real thing.

My gran played tennis in the same area that Emma Raducanu did in South London and apparently had a mean OHBH back in the day and played for her club. She’s in her 80s now but maybe she can play Djoker in the Wimbledon SFs this year, why not? She probably volleys better than Norrie

What part of South London? I have family in Bromley and Lewisham.
