The Del Potro serve

Much is talked about his forehand but what about his serve? Seems good. Is that his second best shot? What are the pros and cons of his serve?

Also there seems some similarities with Wawrinka’s serve.

Good serve.

Average serve for a man his height.

In fact, given his ace% and how ridiculous his forehand is, you really expect him to win more behind his 1st serve. But he's slow to react to good returns.

Considering his size his serve is a bit underwhelming, it's good though relative to everyone else.

Great flat serve out wide on ad court and down T on deuce court, a very good but not great slice serve which means he can be predictable against the best returners, reminds me a bit of Becker serve.

Maybe not among the very best serves but definitely a dangerous one, and an integral part of his game. It's one of his 3 great weapons, first being his forehand and the second his mental toughness.

yeah no question, hardly a liability though. seems to 'arm' it a bit rather than really uncurling and pronating through, kind of a high-five thing going on that doesn't seem to generate crazy racket head speed like a groth for example. but again...he's doing ok with it.

This. He could have worked more on it and gotten more free points from it.

Del pos serve when he first came on the tour in 2007ish was a lot worse. He definitely serves a lot bigger and hits more aces. I think that improvement was a big part of him making major strides after 2007 and being more competitive against RF. But he still doesn’t fully utilize his height. Might have something to do with growing up on outdoor clay courts. Jarry-esque
