On Good Morning Britain today the reporter said Emma Radnucanu is emulating the likes Federer and Serena to win her first slam as a teenager!!!!

The Federer propaganda is so indelible that people don't even bother to check the facts anymore because they've been told for so long that Federer has broken all the records and he is the greatest player to ever pick up a racquet.

Why do I think that you would have suddenly started to love British media had they taken the equivalence of Nadal?

Anyway Djokovic has eclipsed both of them, so he should be the one getting mentioned.

What do you expect then from them to think about his rivals. Talking about PR machine and his minions working hardly on social networks :alien:

Nadal is the equivalent. He is the only active player who can be compared to Emma trying to win her first slam at her first attempt.

This is the point I'm making. It doesn't matter what Rafa or Novak achieve, Federer has been implanted in the heads of the general global public as the ultimate tennis player.

I am sure not many people outside real tennis followers know that Djokovic has the most weeks at number 1. Many casual fans think it's Federer.

Good Morning Britain is a good show but it's not a sports show. Nobody on that show has any knowledge about sport (probably this stretches to back stage as well).

Best ignoring and getting your sports news elsewhere. I wouldn't switch on Wilander and Schett for my latest news on science and technology.

People don't watch it for their sports report but they have still told millions of viewers this morning that Federer won his first slam at his first attempt as a teenager.

Who watches "Good Morning Britain"!? The one once hosted by Piers Morgan. No sensible person watches that. It's TV version of tabloid.

The most respected channel in the world (I would say one of the top 3) is the BBC. The quality of production and superior content is not matched by any other channel - be it kids or sports or entertainment or anything for that matter. It is tax payer funded. They don't always get it right but they are pretty good most of the time.

In the end, Federer will be seen as the GOAT, Rafa will be the undisputed King of Clay and Djokovic will be just another ATG. Mark my words.

GMB is just trash. You are watching the wrong channel and getting annoyed. It's a bit like reading the daily mail or the sun. The right wing newspapers take every opportunity to hype and them bring them down if they don't make it. They will target royals or anyone for that matter. Nothing is off limits. Scoop matters.

Not by anyone who has any real tennis knowledge.
Which is the point I'm making. Compared to global casual tennis fans, who just listen to the noise, fans with real tennis knowledge are miniscule. I believe anything I'm told by the media on cricket, baseball or basketball because I don't pay any attention to them.

The casual global football fan, believe that Beckham is the greatest footballer of his generation, real football fans know that is not the case but it doesn't matter what real fans think in the grand scheme of things. Beckham has cashed in on it.

Don't forget that even if I didn't watch it, millions of people do and have gone away with the idea that Federer won his first slam as a teenager. Just as well I was watching it because I tweeted them and it wasn't repeated in subsequent reports.

From the way the OP phrases it, they could mean that Raducanu is playing that well now, emulating the greats, their tennis level.

I generally agree with what you say about media. But Beckham considered the greatest back then? I never heard anyone saying that. He played in the era of the great Brazilians Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and also of Zidane.

Nobody took him serious as THE superstar of football. Everyone just mockingly said he looks good and may be good a free kicks.

Again, you are not getting the point I'm making. Ask anyone around the world who didn't follow football or had the means to watch it who was the greatest footballer in that era and they would most likely say Beckham. The same will happen in tennis regarding Federer when all is said and done.

Who cares though? Lol, honestly if the world collectively thought Djokovic was the GOAT it wouldn't make a difference to me. If Nadal and Fed both stop at 20 slams, what is there to possibly be upset about? Worst case scenario, whichever you support would be the 3rd best player in the history of time to ever play tennis. Some tragedy lol

But Federer wasn't playing like a great when he was 18. Quite the contrary. He won his first slam at his 18th attempt.
The could mean generally. Like in this Slam she's playing as good as Federer and Serena could, not just as teens, so she might win it now, as a teen.

What I'm saying, all the angst and excitement by Djokovic's fans about CYGS etc wouldn't matter in the end because Federer will remain the GOAT in the wider global mind and erroneous reports like the one this morning entrenches that.

Just saying that Federer is sitting pretty and doesn't have to do any more. He is going to be seen as the GOAT for ever more no matter what anyone else achieves.

GOAT and the the biggest name in tennis are 2 different things. I know what you mean, but if Djokovic gets to 21, especially winning the calendar slam, no one is going to think Fed is the GOAT. Djokovic may never get talked about like Fed and Nadal, but he's already seen as greater by people that actually know their tennis. Even I can admit that (though to me Nadal is still the man).

Sadly for Djokovic he isn't the one being mentioned.

I'm commenting purely on what was actually said not interpreting it in any way.
You do because what was being said could be interpreted in two ways and you chose the one where 'emulating' applies to Federer supposedly winning a Slam as a teen. In that case wouldn't it be bettet to say 'emulating in winning a Slam as a teen'? And then, they would probably say 'trying to emulate' since she didn't win the Slam yet.

So what do Emma and Federer have in common at this stage of her career?

They could take Roger and Serena as very popular examples of tennis greats, who could play stellar tennis and compare Raducanu to them to say she's playing stellar tennis now. I think that would make more sense than the reporter thinking Federer won a Slam as a teen. Consider that if he or she is not into tennis, they'd most likely look up the info specifically - a list of teen Slam champions, for example. And if the reporter is a tennis fan, they probably know Federer didn't win a Slam as a teen.

That is not what was said. They said she was going for her first slam as a teenager emulating Federer and Serena.

Well that show is one you put on getting ready for work and maybe only pay attention to half of it, and like it or not Federer and Serena are the household names who have been winning slams since 2003 and 1999. Just a bigger chance people have heard of them. It would be more courteous to say Djokovic but it’s a short what three minute package that they put together in the time it would take to read this thread,

In this context, of Emma going for her first slam as a teenager she can't be trying to emulate Federer because Federer didn't achieve that; only Nadal and Serena are relevant not Djokovic or Federer.

Federer is a household name because he is mentioned all the time whatever the context is even if he is not the best at whatever they are talking about. And that's the problem.

But the ordinary viewer of this show doesn’t know that and it’s not an important enough story to explain it. It’s a quick feel good filler. Federer is a name everyone is more likely to know.

No. It’s true that at this point Federer is perceived as the one who won the most by the uninformed public. But if we use that as a measuring stick then very few will know Nadal is King of Clay since that’s not something the uninformed public knows or cares about.

but the process will change as Novak continues to win. Already in the specialized press (such as ESPN or Sports Illustrated, or the sports section of something like the NYT) there are more and more articles stating that Novak is GOAT. IF Novak ends with the most slams, most weeks, and most YE1 this view will become unanimous and will filter to the rest of the public.

I should have written it would be more courteous to Nadal my bad.
also I’d add that I would be ticked off if say a sports show did this.
