The Djoker Proposes Four Game Sets. No Ad. Two Hour Time Limit.

Djokovic said slams should be best of 3 in 2018, so yeah he really doesn't care about this stuff as much as dorks here.

Oh geez, even worse. Right as he was entering the dud years of tennis where we had to endure the likes of Kyrgios, Berrrettini, and Tsitsipas as the players to make finals at majors and whom anyone from even the Margaret Court era could beat in straight sets, this dude has been pining to prolong his career since then. It all adds up now.

I am Czech as well by the way.
I will happily show you how much fun it is to be serving for 15 minutes non-stop. Though I'm fairly sure you can't serve a tennis ball to save your life.

I don't play professionally so... yeah, whenever I have to play those I have fun :)
A masochist, I see.
Good for you.

The juniors here play no let, third set supertiebreak. Doubles no ad, no let, supertiebreak.
That's the only tennis they will ever know, because it's inevitable in my opinion.

It's actually a bit silly that it doesn't change tbh
To me it's not silly. Indoor tournaments are fewer and fewer and I think still having a really big tournament on indoor hard is great. Not a slam but more important than a Master 1000. Remember that until the 90s we had a lot of indoor tournaments.

So the only ones who care about the records are morons on the internet.
The owner of the records is fine with forgetting them.
I mean while they're competing they care to some degree, but after? You think they cry on their yachts when someone breaks their record? I sincerely doubt they give a frack, they're too busy counting their millions (and maybe with their neglected family life).

That said, it doesn't mean Novak isn't wrong in this instance, he definitely is. You can be the greatest ever but still say some stupid stuff from time to time, it happens.

I only watch highlights of 10 minutes or so, and even then fast-forward on them, so this is a good move.

Tennis is a boring spectator sport so must be shortened.

I wonder how many of you specialists actually sit through a complete 5-hour match repeating the same 3 patterns over and over without spending 80% of the time on your phone.
I know I can't. And I spend 9 months a year living and breathing tennis.

Novak's ideas being stupid (and they are ridiculously stupid in this case) doesn't excuse Nadal's stupid ideas.

ATP finals should be the crown jewel of the indoor season. ATGs used to be forced to adapt and learn fast court tennis instead of playing from the VIP stands on every surface.
ATP Finals are a joke because the tournament is meant by the ATP to be the stage where all the biggest names match up to play. Making it a single surface doesn't make it feel like a year end championship to wrap up a season, it makes it feel like a more prestigious masters tournament with 8 people.

Didn’t they have it outdoors in Houston?

The same discussion about tennis took place when Jonas interviewed Steve Bellamy the other day.
I have seen the posts media posts on FB and the associated comments below the posts and quite a few people are getting it wrong thinking that this is all about Novak extending his career and if they would really just think it through as Steve Bellamy pointed out it’s about the future of tennis.
It’s about having a conversation about what’s going on in the racquet sport world and how tennis will navigate future challenges: I think people should divide the pros and cons of what is being proposed rather than turn it into a Novak Derrangement syndrome rant.
If you love tennis and want it to flourish you have to cut out the nonsense and work out how to improve tennis into the gutted and I think discussing the scoring format is one of those topics. I also think that people should listen to Jonas’s interview with Steve Bellamy and the points he made:

I think he had dinner with Infantino...

I'm not glued to my phone (and barely use any social media), so yeah I have no issue watching a 5 hour match if I have time (as in, no obligations).
Had no issue watching Alcaraz-Sinner FO final from start to finish last year for example, I was thoroughly entertained.

Respectable.

Then you know that Sinner spent the last 60 minutes of the match barely being able to hold his racket.
Yet another example of tennis being decided by quantity rather than quality.

That's on him, being fit is part of the game, it always has been.

stupid statement but the sad thing is this could actually happen in 5 years.......the upcoming generations might not have the stamina nor the attention span required to last more than 2 hours in a tennis game......audiences interest and money will drive the sport more than anything.......amerianization of sports is such a bad thing to the world......the hydration breaks at the recent football world cup is probably the beginning of it......

Don't see it. Tennis is more popular than ever, prize money increasing, etc. That's not because people hate the game the way it is.

I understand.
But what good is the last hour if one or both the guys have to pry the racket out of their cramping hands? You just know how it's gonna end.

Zverev spend the entirety of his fifth set cramping too this year. On top of the boring four sets prior.

I'd rather see them redline for two hours and go home.
It's just funny to me that it's brought up by Djokovic of all people, the best endurance strategist of all time.

ATP finals represent the pinnacle of the indoor season, so yeah they should be played on indoor HC (well ideally on carpet, if the surface wasn't abolished) and they're certainly not a joke. They award up to 1500 points and present a unique challenge because it's much, much harder to luck out with the draw. You have to beat top players back-to-back-to-back.

You know why ATGs (especially supposed GOAT candidates) didn't have an issue with ATP finals before Rafito arrived? Because they were forced to actually learn fast court tennis in order to have a chance to win slams like Wimbledon and USO, they had to adapt.

The notion to limit match length because of diminishing attention spans is myopic and silly.

It's based on a misunderstanding. A 4hr+ match does not require you to have the same intensity of focus for the entire encounter. That's not what it's sold on. Why those matches become exciting is because of the gradual ramping up of emotional stakes over the length of time.

That's why you can switch on a match at 3-3 in a fifth set having not watched a single point and still feel the stakes. Every game and every point has weight and you may not know anything about what has happened in the rest of the match.

And if you're watching it, that intensity is higher. It makes no difference that you slightly tuned out in the middle of the third set when the were comfortably exchanging service games. The ebb and flow sometimes perhaps mimics your concentration, but you're still able to catch the way the match is going. And when it gets down to crunch time, you feel everything that's on the line.

The idea of shortening the format treats it like a plotty movie where if you look down at your phone for 15 minutes or kinda glaze over, you might have missed some essential details that underpin what happens later and you end up confused. In tennis, those details round out the experience.

btw, Roddick on his podcast was laughing out loud at Novak's comments...I said to myself when I first heard them, of course he wants this for a 39 year-old...but he seemed serious when he said it....but Roddick wasn't buying it, saying this was a full comedic performance by Novak, just straight-faced

although do I remember Novak saying something along these lines before?...still recently though, so maybe still comedy?

Interviewer: "What do you think about Novak Djokovic wanting the tennis scoring system to change from 6 games per set to 4 games?"

Fonseca: "I think he's saying that because of his physique. He's getting older. Well, that's what I can say."Whether you agree with him or not, I don't believe Novak wants a shorter scoring system just to benefit himself.

idk about this...he talks about what some are thinking, it is to benefit an older Novak but then says he wouldn't do it just for himself, but what other plyer Novak's age is even relevant in this discussion?

maybe Fonseca means what I thought Novak might have said or been implying before that people today just can't hang with 4-5 hour men's slam matches, watching them I mean

Nah, how long it takes, you think golf would be dead in the water!

With golf, the whole universe is in contention! With tennis, just one, two or three! It's the lack of superstars that's the problem!

Now, the superstars can't be bothered with M1000.

Yes, it’s true. Once you accomplish them what more is there? Time to get a life and move on to the next thing, as there must be life after records.

I think Novak wants them to be broke and looks forward to it, he’s very supportive of the next gen and tennis evolving to survive.

I think he knows it’s dying in popularity and the players are forced to retire due to injuries most of the time.

He has a concept to speed things up for greater “entertainment”, while simultaneously helping prevent injuries of players and allow them to heal.

This is the only sport that’s year-round, there is no off-season, and the players are forced to play constantly

I don't think he is being sincere here, he was obviously trolling.

There’s always a little bit of truth in a joke, I think if he sat down and made a real plan, it might be similar as that’s obviously been on his mind.

He’s very supportive of the new gen, it’s very encouraging
