The Donald

Good win and good performance at the French. Third round is a great result. I know Garcia-Lopez isn't a seed or a big name, but he's a classic tough Spanish clay courter, so I'd probably pick him over Donald in the next match. But, you never know. DY seems to be playing well. Big change of gamestyle from Lopez, who I think is actually a good matchup for DY.

No matter when he loses at Roland Garros, the question is whether he can sustain momentum for a considerable period.

Kudos on the good result.

Very good, professional result. With no points to defend here or at Wimbledon, this could set him up nicely for a nice summer of accumulating ranking points and cash.

Amazingly inconsistent DY surprises us again...he struggles to win Challenger matches on American dirt and qualies in Nice but climbs off the canvas to KO his victims at RG???

The Donald came through and now is in the 3rd round of the FO!

No idea who his opponent is; but The Donald looks very tough and is playing excellent! The Donald has a good change of making to the quarters with his momentum he has generated with the straight wins; has a good change to go even further in the draw! Could this be The Donald breakout in the tour?

I saw him lose to Steve Johnson in Atlanta two years ago.

Never seen a player just basically give up starting with the first point. He missed shots by 20 feet. And Johnson was awful.

I would have bet my life savings that he would NEVER do anything again in tennis.

GGL, the Wawa slayer. End of the line for "the change (sic) of making to the quarters", IMO.

Garcia Lopez... Doubtful this is his big tour emergence. I don't see him getting through this round with the clay specialist. Though if he does he climbs another ten or so spots in rankings!

What are Donald's expectations for his future? What ranking does he think he belongs at/where does he want to be?

I don't know his mind.

Even if he said it out loud, it dosent mean anything. He can say one thing and truly feel another.

I believe he'll be top 30 by the end of this year. Simply for the lack of points he needs to defend.

That was when he was near the end of his 17 match losing streak. So, understandably, his confidence was probably quite low at that time. He was also still playing with the Dunlop frame, one of them, which clearly was a detriment.

The match still went 3 sets despite all that.

DY played well today, he seemed to be much more confident and hitting a much heavier ball and played smart.
I will say I was pleasantly surprised to see he won the 2nd set after choking at 5-4.

how the heck did he beat Lopez today ??? Amazing. just amazing

IMO, Lopez is actually a good match up for DY on clay. His backhand isn't great, so DY can hit his lefty forehand to that corner to establish himself in the point. LOpez isn't a typical Spanish clay court grinder. He's more of a shotmaker and will give his opponents errors. Even though Lopez seeded, I think DY's next match against Garcia, a more traditional clay courter, will be much tougher.

I turned it on before work for ten minutes and saw him up a set and a break and drop the break and go to tiebreak.. I thought he was in the way out and saw he won in straights later. I nearly dropped my phone. Lol

Donald has a very nice looking forehand. Anyone agree?

It's his best looking shot. It still doesn't do much for me. I think the reason I don't care much for him is his game just doesn't have any aspect that stands out to me. Always happy to see a countrymen improving though.

They are both lefties. Young's CC forehand plays into Lopez's forehand.

The inside-out forehand does play into Lopez's backhand, but that's a stroke that requires running around.

Yes, I don't know why I forgot Lopez was a lefty. But, still, I think he's a good matchup for DY. The backhand is a sometimes weakness that can be attacked, and he'll make errors, at least relatively more than a classic clay court player.

Just glad to see he came back and won the third. He could have easily packed it in, satisfied with his 3rd round appearance. He's maturing somewhat.

I thought his would be tougher matchup than Lopez, and Garcia is ranked higher than DY. So no shame if DY loses, it's just how he loses (if he indeed does, he's coming back at the moment).
