Ferrer looked the fitter of the two in that last set. Always the fighter, he wanted it more than The Donald.

    I think you're off a year...wasn't it RG'13?

Señor Smoke is not close to his level from even '16, let alone his early 30's peak.

If he'd had a different 1R opponent, the result might've been different too.
    You'd think I'd remember - it's not like I don't watch this every year

13-11 in the fifth. The equivalent of 3-1 in the seventh set. But Donald didn't want it?

For someone who does not want it, see Bernard Tomic.

I wrote, .... " he ( Ferrer) wanted it MORE." NOT, "The Donald, didn't want it." Big difference.

Physical and mental fatigue takes a toll. Ferrer fresher in both departments.

Donald hung in their the entire match but Ferrer is still top 30 and Donald top 40. To bad Donald had to face Ferrer 1st round. Very tough draw! Go Donald. Not his favor - red clay.

Into the doubles semis! Came back from a break down in the second to win in a third set tiebreak.

Nice to see a big smile on the Don's face after the match.

Donald Young also reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles event at the US Open in 2014 with Taylor Townsend.

Such disrespect for veteran dubs partner SANTIAGO GONZALEZ not to mention him in your poasts congratulating The Donald. The 34-year-old Mexican has won 11 ATP dubs titles, mostly with either Scott Lipsky or Mariusz Fyrstenberg as his partner.

Perfectly fitting that Donald and Santiago are the modern version of Rick & Captain Renault...they will always have Paris:

Mexico, if my search is correct, has its first finalist in a slam since Raul Ramirez at RG'77, again teaming with an American (Brian Gottfried) to win the title.

A very gritty win today fron Young and Gonzalez, who broke Zimonjic in the very first game of the match only for Gonzalez to be broken in the second game. In the second set the American-Mexican combination got the early break first again, but Young was broken straight after.

It was Zimonjic who wobbled again at the end of the second as Young and Gonzalez gradually began to play better. Some of Young's hard, low returns were particularly effective, while Gonzalez made a number of killing interceptions at the net throughout the match.

Crazy that DY (w/Gonzalez) or Harrison (w/Venus) is going to be a Slam doubles champ - basically out of nowhere. That's sort of the beauty of doubles - a random team can catch fire. Wonder if they'll keep playing with their respective partners after the French.

My big hope is that by playing doubles and the set of skills necessary to be successful there, serve return, volleys, and overheads will transfer over to his singles. Plus, the match improvement involved by learning how to compete to the end of matches, and win, can only help his tournament results.

Either way, playing doubles and simply hitting more balls against players of this level can only help him to improve his entire game.

Only in Pittsburgh. Watching it it looks like every serve from the left/ad court by Venus is a footfault he is so far over.

I thought DY's much more experienced and accomplished doubles partner actually played worse - not that DY didn't make as many mistakes (probably), but his partner seemed to make more mistakes at key times. I get that he's not a power volleyer - but his guiding the volley got him into a lot of trouble. Simply thought he didn't gauge well, at all, when to guide it and when to stick it. And his lob or soft slice to the opponent who was back followed by running into net didn't seem to work that well; got burned a lot on that play. But, maybe it's just my selective memory. Though, he was slow as molasses. But enough, don't know why I'm bagging on the guy who helped DY get to a Slam doubles final. Good run by DY and Gonzalez. Really wanted DY to win because, let's be honest, it was a random run - I don't see DY or Harrison in a Slam doubles final gain, though nothing is impossible.

If DY won, I was going to ask - what is the more significant accomplishment, what would most players rather have - a Slam doubles title OR a 250 singles title? If DY had won, he would have had the Slam doubles, and Harrison would have had the 250. But, Harrison has both.

I would go with the major dubs title. Just the name of the event, everybody knows that all of the best were there. Plus, the major dubs will pay a lot more money!!

Donald should get HOT during grass season. Time to make some strong results during this time. His great hands and lefty shotmaking should serve him well. He could reach the Quaterfinals at Wimby

Not very good yet on grass but he did make Newport SFs last year. Before that run, he had a seriously bad losing record on grass for his career that he has raised to 18-26.

Yeah, he's not great on grass. Yet, weirdly he won junior Wimbledon. I know it means little - any number of pros who never become stars win junior Slams. But it's an interesting footnote in his career.

According to Sports Illustrated, Craig Kardon, a veteran WTA coach, is now with Donald Young. He was coaching CoCo Vandeweghe.

He could use some good coaching. His fitness seems good now. He could use some good match strategy to use his strengths to have a more diverse game over the course of a match.

He has great hand but really needs much help to improve his footwork.
