Tough draw for Smyczek.
18 times they've played and DY is now up 11-7 h2h with a three match winning streak. Before that, Smee was killing him...most of The Donald's wins came really early in the rivalry.
Look like Young is getting some payback.
Don came up a little short tonight but he put up a really good battle. It took Nishikori a third set tiebreak to get through. Donald saved five match points over the last three games. A two and a half hour match that ended at about 2 am local time. Nishikori was just a little bit more solid over the entire match. Donald's looked strong enough thru out, but his footwork let him down at times and some shots sailed. A couple of more points here and there, and he could have won the match.
It must have still been hot and humid for the whole match. All of the line umpires were still wearing shorts. Both players played soaking wet even at the end of the match.
Always a bummer to lose, but it could turn out to be a really good tuneup match for the Open. Donald turned his right ankle and went down after 4 all in the third. Hopefully, it is nothing and there is no swelling tomorrow.
The Donald was so close to winning against Nishikori! Both gave it all but just someone had to loose. The Donald has nothing to prove in this match. He was their to the final two points!
I think this one hurts less than the RG loss to Señor Smoke.
I noticed that Donald's apparel was 100% generic. Did he lose his sponsorship with Boost? If so, are there any rumors about anything new coming on the horizon?
He is playing better and his ranking has been fairly stable so he is an abailable billboard on the tour. He also has the fact that he is an American. All of those things, should, help in that effort.
@bigserving Young has a clothing sponsor. The name is Grand AC; a startup out of LA
Thanks for the 411! I went to their site and the line looks really well crafted and AFFORDABLE ($28 for a nice quality shirt). Hope they add some designs to their mix...all solid colors is kinda plain.
I like their line. It is more classic with colors that are easy to wear like with some jeans casually. They do seem very competitively priced too.
They need to come up with a subtle, yet recognizable logo in order to best use the Donald as a billboard.
If breaks go his way I think he has a shot at going reasonably deep in TRS. His draw has promise.
It about time! The Donald has had some very strong 2nd round opponents recently as well as 1st rnd. in the draw sheet. Maybe, this will be his chance!
He had better not look past today's match with Tommy Paul, who has played quite well recently at Atlanta and Washington. His wins came against Chung, Jaziri. Muller, Ruud and Pouille. He also held MP vs Nishikori.
1st set to Tommy
And the match 4-6 6-7. Had his chances.
Another tough break for The Donald having to face hot Tommy Paul in the 1st end.
Don was up 3 love in the second.
Physically, Donald looks great. Probably the best guns on the tour. Legs look strong. Looks ready for the best of five at the Open. Footwork however, still looks junioresque.
Donald, Jack, Stevie...
I've given up on Americans except perhaps for a couple really young ones.
Yeah! I sometimes think that way too!
Jared is doing quite well lately. Despite his bad loss to Isner today, Tommy is showing some potential.
But he IS one of the really young ones.
Isner only knocks out good players. He floats in draws, taking people out. I really dislike his tennis.
That what a tennis match is about; knocking out your opponents so you can advance to the next level of play and win the tournament!
Isner seems like a nice guy, but I just can't enjoy his game. There are a lot of other players who get hot and win a few matches but usually can't get to the end of tournaments, but if I like their games, I don't mind.
