The doubles alley challenge!

Tried the doubles alley drill today.

Second attempt we got 22 shots in a row.
Thought that was a respectable score.

22 shots in a row without a single ball landing outside the alley? Or 22 shots landing in the alley as part of a longer continuous rally?

Open level.

Also did the drill with a weaker junior earlier in the day but it took us 15 minutes to get 19 shots in a row.

That's really impressive. In order to get numbers like 19 and 22 without going through a ridiculous number of attempts, you must be around 90% accurate.

For me (unless it's really a cooperative drill as you also seemed to have done it), it's also the lights indoors/my vision that's an impedement (even for rallying beyond the BL).
And the cold (we got 11 C / 51 F) last night in the bubble, took about half an hour to get some fluid shots in.

Another screw up on YouTube video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u95HMILxwFg

Dang. Had forgotten that I had had troubles with the second video. I've managed to have YouTube accounts under two different email addresses. Had feared that I'd lost my early ones when they made me change over when companies got bought or sold. Looks like this one is through gmail.

I'm the old guy on the near side. And, I'm typing this 15 hours post-op from my first new knee! :) Two student nurses working me over.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u95HMILxwFg Just ran across this, again, and noticed that it had no views and that I apparently had not yet hit the "publish" button. Now I have. :) I wasn't quite as bad as I had thought. :)

11 days post op and I can finally be mostly comfortable in bed, rolling over at my leisure without risking that dern sudden, lancinating pain. Have been "limping" (wouldn't really call it "walking") without my walker or crutches for three days now. Looks like it will eventually work. I miss hitting tennis balls. . .

my courts open mar 28th (canada), gonna be tough to make the deadline. You should make it mid april deadline, so atleast the summer posters can give it a go.

Coolio is a 5.0 level player, so I know he can hit 22 in a row with a cooperative partner.

Fortunately the challenge was best out of 100 :p
That said, Topspin, next time we play we'll have to break 22 consecutive, on video :)

Where in Canada? Still snow (5-10cms) on the ground in Eastern Ontario and today we got some more...

While I do appreciate your technique, could you try next time not to slice please? :)

I do manage to hit 10 flat FHs in a row with my partner in the doubles alley, like a rally ball.

Looks like I win with 22 shots in a row. What's my prize? :)

If only the Lottery system didn't require proof, I'd be a billionaire! :p

Cmon people! beat it (while consecutive shots is still impressive, the orig bet was best out of 100... 50bh/50fh), record it, post it, inspire all us to do better! Heck if you do post it helping all of us at ttw, even I'll throw in a set of string to the winner!! (but Top and I will try to beat it again first :p)

Waste of time.
Never a reason to hit more than 6 in a row into the alley, then you should have hit harder, gone topspin lob CC, or rip one up the middle between the netperson and the baseliner opponent.
Tennis is not a game of attrition.

I found that once you hit outside(angled) off the doubles alley it's usually hard to get it back on track with flat shots (and that's what I'm interested mainly, flat/topspin shots, not slices as my bread and butter).

Anyhow I'm more interested in consecutive shots, at the most with one ocasional miss then in a 100 shots with no long "streaks".

It's just a drill for control and consistency.

Yeah, definitely a waste for all singles players.. since they should never be hitting in the alleys.

haha...you know Lee will say black just because most people say white.
If anyone fails to see the value of working on accuracy or consistency then it's not worth arguing with them. One of the reason I have old Lee on blockdown.

It's about grooving and rhythm.

Well in this case, you can see what he's getting at, don't you, when he says "there is no point of being consisent over 6 shots"?

I mean any movement impeded player(or someone who doesn't want to defend too much) might tell you the same, although drills will help even with those shorter rallies, of course.

Found this thread recently. I do this drill as a cornerstone to my practice sessions with the ball machine. I start doing the volley version with forehands then backhand. Then progress to forehand and backhand groundstrokes. I only count a 'make' as beyond the service line as an added rule.

I will take a video next time I bring my gear to set up the phone or get someone to help out.

The groundstroke version was as follows:

39 of 50 forehands in (beyond service line, in alley)
36 of 50 backhands in (beyond service line, in alley)

I do them in sets of 5 with a short (say 3-5 second) break from set to set, until to 50 overall.

Longest streak in a row in alley was probably in the 8-10 range, but didn't track that.

I am in the 4.5 level doubles player range (don't play singles much anymore)

I used to think these types of drills were dumb and didn't apply to playing points/matches/etc, but once I incorporated these 2-3x per week and dedicating 10-20 minutes on foundational accuracy, technique, and ball striking like this, my game has steadily improved across the board. Highly recommended.

One difference in terms of time/courts/etc. is I have an all-in-one club membership, so I don't pay per hour or session on the court and I am self-employed/retired so I can hit 4-5 times per week without much impact on my schedule. I can see folks who have to pay each session or can only get out 1-3x per week (or don't have regular ball machine access) not wanting to devote regular time to this endeavor.
