Ok so andy Murray primarily a singles player comes back after 7-8 month layoff and is about to win a ATP 500 doubles title, beating some great Doubles specialists along the way............... Does this definitely prove that very good singles player will always be better player than great doubles specialist player even in the Doubles game and play ??????????

No, it proves that Andy Murray and Feliciano Lopez are both good net players with solid tennis IQ's. If they played doubles full time, they'd win quite a few titles. It's not like they're blowing teams off the court, though.

That said, if you look at the attendance at the doubles, it proves a point I made earlier that when top singles guys play doubles it gets more butts in seats and eyes on screens.

Wow, Lopez/Murray in dubs Final, beating seeded #1, #3 along the way. Lopez is also in singles final defeating #3, #8. Impressive run.

IMO, Andy is an unusual singles player with great hands and natural tennis IQ that carries over to doubles very well. I don't think many singles player can be that successful so naturally in doubles.

But having said that, I noticed that most singles player have better than average service returns - often better than the career doubles players.

I'd say not always. I remember a Davis cup tie between the USA and Australia back in the 90's, the Americans put their strongest singles players(it was world no 1 Pete Sampras and no 5 Todd Martin) up against the No1 doubles team, the Woodies(Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge). The Woodies won it.

Found this on the net :D:
1997 – Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge defeat Pete Sampras and Todd Martin 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-4 to cut the U.S. lead over Australia to 2-1 in the Davis Cup semifinals in Washington, D.C. Sampras is so angry at the loss that he refuses to attend the post-match press conference, causing the International Tennis Federation to fine the U.S. team $1,000. “I really didn’t have anything to say. I really didn’t,” Sampras says the next day. “I was getting a rubdown, and the key thing was to recover, because I played back-to-back matches. It was more important to get ready for an early match, an 11 o’clock match. It is early for me.”

Andy not finding the same magic with Marcelo. Getting broken on serve all the time. Cabal and Farah clearly out for revenge.

The lure of playing with American teenager Cori "Coco" Gauff has proved too strong for Britain's Jay Clarke, who has dumped mixed doubles partner Harriet Dart at the last minute to play alongside the young star.

Gauff, 15, made headlines after becoming the youngest player in the professional era to qualify for the Wimbledon main draw and then beating Venus Williams and 2017 semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova to reach the third round.

Britain's Dart, ranked No. 182 in the world, was left frustrated after she received a text message from Clarke saying he was switching partners ahead of the mixed doubles opening round Thursday.

"Essentially, due to the timing, I wasn't able to find another partner in the time period available," Dart told the Daily Mail. "I did ask a number of people, but a lot of them were set up and that's it. I think you should ask Jay about his reasons, that's all I want to say."

Clarke said Gauff had contacted him and asked him if they could play together.

"I've known Cori for a few years now, we got in contact, and she asked me to play," Clarke said. "That was tough. I had to let her know because I saw the pairs that had signed in, and I was thinking 'Am I even going to get in?'

"I think it's the worst decision I have had to make, especially midtournament. I didn't sleep too well the night before I played Noah [Rubin in a first-round singles match], but hopefully she understands why I did it. I'm sorry for her it happened."

Dart, 22, appeared unaffected by the last-minute change of plans, as she earned a place in the third round of the women's singles with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-1 win Thursday over Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.

"I spoke about it yesterday. I'd really just like to talk about my match today. I think that's in the past," said Dart during her post-match press conference. "Yeah, I think just got to look forward. I'm just concentrating on my singles.

"I think some things you can't control. Just got to focus on the task in hand. That's playing singles. That's all I'm really worried about."

Clarke, 20, plays Roger Federer in the second round Thursday before teaming up with Gauff to face Robert Lindstedt and Jelena Ostapenko in the mixed doubles first round Friday.

Seems like a jerk move from Jay Clarke. Come on, you don't drop your partner the day before the tournament for an invitation with some random up and comer.

Anyway, Murray/Herbert settled in and won the next three. Go andy!

Yeah, and all this guff from Jay Clarke about perhaps not getting a WC, was just that, him and Dart were in the semis last year they would have got a WC
Murray and Herbert seem like a good pairing.

Has there ever been a mixed thread?

You & I are the only ones that have even mentioned them on here today.

Feel sorry for Mies. It's obvious that he has dedicated himself to doubles and his skillset is a traditional one. Serena, however, is tipping the scales in a way he probably couldn't have imagined.
