The dreaded EOY Rating thread

In our area, I found a handful of 3.0 guys who were bumped up to 3.5; most were already playing 3.5. One guy from our 4.0 team was bumped to 4.5; it wasn't the one everyone was expecting. I saw three guys in our area get bumped to 4.0. One played only 3.5 last spring and lost 3 out of 5 matches, so I can't explain that one. The other two only played 4.0 despite having 3.5C ratings. None of the 3.5 guys in my league with multiple 4.0 wins, and there were several, got bumped up.

On the ladies' side, none of the 3.0 ladies on my mixed 7.0 team were bumped up, which is good. I didn't see any 3.5s that I know get bumped up either. I saw a small amount of traffic between 4.0 and 4.5 among players I know.

Overall, I didn't spot many changes in Eastern or Southern CT in the leagues that my friends and I play in.

Oh well, now that this non-event is over, I can get back to trying to figure out how to submit content for that new "Scrubs Playing Tennis" YouTube channel.

If I have a 2019 rating, is it still valid for 1 more year? I thought it would expire but maybe I got the math wrong.

I have absolutely no idea how it's humanly possible. But evidently it is. During the regular season and playoffs this year I went 13-0 without dropping a set. I tossed out a total of 10 Bagels. 2 Double Bagels! And I didn't get bumped up! o_O

The following were my match scores

(40+ Singles)
6-2 6-1
6-2 6-2
6-0 6-0
6-0 6-2
6-0 6-0
6-2 6-0

(18+ Singles)
6-2 6-0
6-0 6-1
6-0 7-6
6-0 6-4

(40+ Singles District)
6-0 6-2

Here's where things went haywire. I was having leg fatigue and decided to play doubles at Sectionals.

(40+ Doubles Sectionals)
2-6 2-6
1-6 3-6
1-6 1-6

So I guess you can annihilate your opponents during the regular season and playoffs and just lose a couple of matches at Sectionals to keep your rating?

Uhhhhhh....... o.k.

I stayed at 3.0. All the men in my area stayed at their level. TR had a 3.0 self rate with a mixed rating putting him as a 4.0 for most of the season but I see tr estimated his mixed rating at 3.44 now. He ended up with a 3.0m. Others with almost .3 over the level (according to tr) also stayed at there self rate.

what is your rating in ntrp wtn and utr? Were you playing against people at your level or were they playing up?

Got the bump, but curious... was looking at match results in USTA and one of my wins from sectionals isn't there. Does something like that need to be rectified somehow? Just curious for the future.

I doubt that getting it fixed now would change anything. They aren't going to go back and redo year-end ratings again with corrected match results. When results are entered in TennisLink, they are supposed to have 48 hours for captains to confirm, and then for year-end they give a two week period for matches played prior to the cutoff date to be entered, so they figure if it isn't entered by then, they aren't going to include it.

But a Sectionals result should be entered by USTA staff. It is odd that they missed it. Is the entire team match missing? Or was a wrong player entered for a match instead of you?

Tennis link did not pick up sectionals for a team I played on. No mention of it at all. Said the team didn’t qualify for sectionals.

I just found the match record in tennis record but not USTA. My opponent didn't have an entry for it as well, but I'm sure it must have been counted.

Have a friend who went undefeated this year, even made it quite deep in nationals. Didn't get bumped. We're all surprised, including himself.

I stayed 4.0 for another year. It's not surprising, but there was a little danger due to my summer league results. I played singles for a friend's (last place) team just to have fun playing some singles since I'm too old and fat to play singles for competitive teams. I won all 3 of those singles matches. I played one guy twice who is a pretty good 4.0 (wins ~2/3 of his 4.0 matches, although he's older, so mostly doubles). I had played him in singles once before a couple years ago in a 40+ district playoff match and won 4-6 6-4 13-11, so as tight as it could get. This year, I won 6-0 6-1 and 6-0 6-0. They were two matches where the score didn't reflect the play at all. In the first match, the first set was 40 mins long and had 5 deuce games, but was a bagel. That's how those matches went. I was hoping they wouldn't push me into the bump range, and thankfully, they didn't.

I tried to appeal to 3.5. Didn't work. LOL.

It’s very difficult to get bumped up without playing at the level you want to get to.

I agree with you. And now I’m probably going to get dragged for being a 3.0 woman who appealed up to 3.5 so I can play 4.0 this summer… but my year end C rating was based primarily on my matches when I was fairly new to tennis and doesn’t reflect my current level of play. Luckily my request was approved, I have a couple teams wanting me to play 4.0 this summer so now I will be able to do so. Go ahead and drag me everyone…

Also, I guess TR wasn’t completely off, as I was within appeal threshold.

Yeah you shouldn't be appealing up to 3.5 to play 4.0. Now if you want to play 3.5 as a 3.0 then go for it. But a Computer rated 3.0 shouldn't be wasting 4.0's time.

At anything other than 3.0, I'd definitely agree with you. A 3.0 woman who is naturally athletic and taking up the sport for the first time may be improving rapidly enough to be able to play 4.0 this year. In this particular case, that is something that only she can determine, but she should play some 3.5s before making that determination and not start playing 4.0 until she is routinely beating 3.5s.

All true in ~95% of cases. Having multiple teams interested in her playing at 4.0 suggests the problem is with her current rating.
