There are 3 options

1. Wimbledon was the box to check off first
2. He's really that afraid of a good Nadal on clay
3. He's not playing RG and is talking out of his arse.

Nadal should be more concerned about himself getting into form. However, this is great news for me, because Federer going for another RG single-handedly would make the clay season worthy to watch.

Still he really should do a light schedule though, maybe just Rome and RG (or even RG only).

I think that Roger's GS ambitions should be la decima in Wimby and one more title in Roland Garros.

More USO and AO?

.....yes why not...

Roger's been noting all these constant withdrawals and retirements from Rafa and smells blood. He's starting to fancy his chances on clay again! ;)

I don't fancy his chances of winning 7 BO5 matches on clay, especially considering he's barely set foot on it in years. He was beaten by Gulbis and squashed by Stan the last two outings at the FO. I don't expect him to be showcasing winning form there.

He is just playing mind games with Nadal.

Well, I'm guessing he didn't just volunteer this information and was probably asked specifically about it, maybe by a French reporter he didn't want to offend, and spoke about it as a dream he has akin to the one Martin Luther King had, but just like that one there is little rational reason to think this one will come true either, and my guess is he'll probably spend more time focusing on reality.

If Fed wins IW, he should consider skipping Miami, and playing RG. He’d have a big lead for #1, so he wouldn’t be throwing away his chances by skipping Miami. And with the tour decimated in the way it is, and with Nadal questionable, no title is unachievable.

The hardest part for Fed to commit to is to commit to the chance (if he does well at RG) that he isn’t fresh heading into Wimbledon.

Seriously, dream about it Rog, but don't risk playing on the clay. I dream about alot of things I want to come true and then wake up and stupid reality kicks in.

@ak24alive - hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. The more I thought about that seed you planted in my mind, the more obvious sense it makes.

He’s going for another run. This isn’t just another crazy Fanboy dream.

It’s happening.

His game has adapted for the worse on clay courts. I think quite a few players have a good shot at Federer on clay, and I think a decent number are favorites on clay vs Federer.

Yeah I just don't see him having success at the FO, I enjoy clay court tennis but I'd rather Federer focused on Wimbledon and the back half of the year. He ended up injured and out of steam without playing the French last year...

The question is if Fed would trust himself to enter the RG field if Nadal is not in the draw. I still wouldn’t especially fancy Fed’s chances, but they’d go way up for sure.

Personally I think Nadal is going to be in recovery for pretty much this whole year so if Fed really wants to RG title again, this would be an optimal year to go for it.

If Federer win RG 2018, I will concede unconditional GOAThood to him, being a Nadal fan myself.

We don't really need you to concede anything. You're a Nadal fanboy who can continue to think that Federer isn't the GOAT while the rest of the world by consensus has him as the greatest player ever.

He doesn't really have to do anything to prove he's the GOAT. Like others have said, you'd only be conceding to yourself. The widespread consensus is that he is the GOAT by a significant margin.

I hope he doesn't. He's going to be nearly 37 by then. He needs to arrive at Wimbledon in prestine shape. We don't want him grinding his body down at RG or risking injury.

I am not here to impose my views on anyone. What i meant to say was that, if Fed wins RG 18, i will consider him the undisputed GOAT (joining the 'rest of the world' as you say - though whether all except me consider Fed the undisputed GOAT is a different topic altogether).

However, that doesn't mean I would stop being a fanboy of Rafa. How can I? One doesn't need stats to be a fan. I have been a fan of Rafa since 2005, when he had zero slams and a ordinary set of stats.

What is it that will make RG 2018 that much more special than, say, Wimbledon 2018 (or AO 2018 for that matter)?

He has nothing to lose and even if he makes 1/8, that will help with YE No1.
Beating Nadal in FO final will be legendary.

Not to get in the way of an epiphany in progress, but that pledge doesn't really make sense. Whether a player's status as the proverbial GOAT is "undisputed" or not depends on what other people think. It's really a factual question, not a matter of your opinion. Are there people out there who dispute Federer's status as GOAT -- yes or no? If there are, then he's not the undisputed GOAT, regardless of how your own evaluation of his standing may be changing. On the other hand, you're entitled to declare him just "the GOAT" from your point of view based on whatever criteria you wish to apply.

Things can be disputed/undisputed even in one's own mind irrespective of other people's opinions.

Fed should not lose touch with reality. Realistic aim should be winning one of W/USO finishing year as #1. Playing on clay might ruin his chances to win second Slam.

I am actually amazed that now winning more Majors is considered "realistic" for him (apparently some even count those as already won).

What a difference an year can make!
