Maybe he thinks it's too much of a hassle to get thru to the qualifying then thru to the main draw with the USO close by. Probably think that he might overplay. Just my hunch

Gullbis ever spread his wings before during US hard court swing? Looked back on track against Djoker. Back with team Thiem. Ready to assert himself as best player in world? Definite US Open dark horse.

He did win the LA tourney in '11 when coached by Canas but lost 2R USO. It's no barometer for what will happen in Flushing.

Losing Vancouver 1R is bad, especially double digits DFs. Serving can get him out of the mess his FH sometimes creates.

He has always looked slow of foot on hard courts except for few flashes. Clay is his surface, but against Djoker he looked very good. I would laugh prevoius years at USO prospects. I hope he is in this year. Hope he gets in WS next week.

Where in the sam hill did the forehand come from. Has anyone taken credit for that?

HCs are where he's won titles in Delray (2x), LA, St Petersburg and Marseille. That's five of his six titles.

True, but those are lesser tournaments. His career highlights (Fed wins, near win against Nadal in prime) have all been on clay. To me he's just been a step to slow for US hard court series and Australia really bad (which just is odd.) But this year, against Djoker astounding form given his history. If Gullbis were to gain a quarter step in movement, that would be frightening. It may just be that Djoker doesn't nuke the ball hard enough to expose the Gullbis feet.

Anyone know when the Gullwing forehand started. It was normal early in his career..

Here you go: (notice the video is on HC and is the closest Nadal came to losing on NA HCs in '13. The full gully is emerging.)

There is a nice 7-minute video of the Gulbis FH evolution going back to his birthday eve match at USO vs Roddick and through to the Nadal Rome'13 match. It wouldn't code properly for me to share in the thread.

Thx! Loved that highlight reel! Definite proof that Gullbis has a strong game for hard court. I would say he favors things on the slower side on hard court, but Australia seems an exception to that rule. Googled hard court speeds and of course got TTW:
    The Masters:

    1.Cincinnati
    2.Paris
    3.Toronto
    4.Shanghai
    5.Miami
    6.Indian Wells

I guess that forehand came from Ernie's artistic side. Perhaps long term consumption of Absinthe (his namesake's poison) accounts for all of this.

The reason why Gulbis did not play Qualies in Cincy is that he forgot to enter. Same in Montreal but they were nice enough to give him a WC for Qualies. :D He said that he was so used to be in Main Draw that he had totally forgotten that you need to sign up for Qualies. Only Ernie. :p

Anyway, because his match against Djokovic ended after 9pm he wouldn't have been able to play qualies in Cincy anyway so it didn't matter. His only possibility to play in Cincy would have been to win that match and earn the SE but we know how that ended.

    He will play Winston-Salem next.

About his FH. It was always his weak spot, even when it looked less funky. Actually when he was younger he hit it way to close to his body so I guess that's why he and his new coach (since 2012) went for the other extreme with that huge swing.

    Awesome! My alma mater.

Fogetfullness, another sign of the Green Fairy...

The next step for the forehand is some bling; an arm tube maybe? (he's got to keep up now that he's back on the Thiem.) I see now why E left his coach temporarily. From high up the Gullwing is for the birds!

The Ernests has a rematch with Rosol in W-S 1R. He will need to be sharp again to defeat the defending champion.

It'll be on ESPN3 Monday at 3 pm EST. If he flies by Rosol, Janowicz possibly awaits, the finalist from last year. I expect this to motivate Ernie's ego and maybe he'll have his A game on display.

On court, on serve midway through the first set. Although I'm 600 miles away, I feel the wind currents from the flapping Gullwing FH.

Ernie was flapping hard at 4-5 down a break getting Rosol to 0-40, but then Rosol clipped his wings. saving after a very long game with several more Gulbis break opportunities. Rosol play pretty clutch and I saw him save at least 6 break points in the match. Rosol 6-4, 7-6. Don't think Ernie like the heat as he had a ice towel necklace on at most of the changeovers. Ernie not good in hot weather?

It's the ship. Perhaps the key is being with the Thiem team. He needs someone under his Gullwing for an ego boost and reminder that he should be better. How is that kid ranked higher!?!

Indeed, it is the same vid. That night match vs Roddick seven years ago was a cracker and it went late enough to begin their shared "birthday party" that year.

In the USO, hopefully can make the 4th round. Has Bedene, Simon, troicki, then Stan. Not a bad draw at all. Everyone in that 1/16 seem out of sorts recently.

Ernie hates the heat. And it will be very, very hot in NYC. 4th round seems like an ambitious goal. :D

The time has come today for The Ernests vs Aljaz to emulate Roy Scheider in the classic Bob Fosse scene:

Ernests has been struggling with a wrist injury since Vancouver. From what I read on twitter and another forum he could hardly practice during the week. Very unfortunate timing to get injured (again, had just put that shoulder injury behind him) after his first decent tournament of the year. People can make fun of him all they want but he really has not been lucky since his RG semifinal. Not lucky at all. Hope it's not too serious and he can recover in time for the remaining tournaments of the season.

He needs to let his injury heal for good this time, wrist injuries are no joke. Take a break and refocus mentally as well.
