When I was just months shy of my 28th birthday and a motorcycle enthusiast, I sought winding and hilly roads to test my evolving skills on two wheels. The direct routes were crowded and boring. It took longer to get to the destination but it sure was a lot more interesting.

Most were willing to bury our Latvian gull In '11, his nadir being vs djovic at IW. By early '13, he had started to turn the corner and was top 10 just 16 months later. Going from mid-70's to a seed at slams with little to defend and no pressure is very possible if he's healthy. It's way too early for me to start shoveling dirt on his casket.

7-5 7-5 win in Geneva over Berankis after a shaky start in set 1 and an uneventful set 2 until the winning break at 6-5.

Cilic, with zero match play since Miami, is next.

    Aiziet!

Live ranking is #80 but I'm stymied why...he lost 2R at Nice to stablemate Thiem so he shouldn't have dropped the 25 points indicated on their chart. The flip side...Berankis is listed at NCH #49, up from #52 despite the loss.

(ah, good old times of high ranking......)

the road to his RG title starts by a geneva title !

You are right...even though '15 was utter disappointment, he was able to beat that pesky opponent "Bye" on his Nice run to the QFs.

It looks as thought sureshs is visiting Geneva and has sprung a leak. Evacuate or survive at great peril!

Does Ernie have what it takes to take out Cilic? Methinks he can add another scalp to his trophy room... figuratively of course.

The only h2h in recent years was in Ernests' prime '14 clay mode at Madrid (w. 3&4). Three meetings as late teens in '07, Cilic up 2-1.

Rusty Cilic is primed for an upset by good Ernests. All bets are off if bad Ernests returns.

Bad Ernests keeps his run going without consecutive wins in main draws, now dating back to his SF result last fall in Vienna...now 4-12 including his SF loss there to Johnson.

The attacked prankster seems to be left-handed. I would be quite happy if dear Ernests SNAGs an upset of a certain leftie next week? When is the draw?:D

Yeah, another loss. But his form has improved so much compared to a few weeks ago. I'm serious. Wasn't a bad performance against Cilic at all. ;)

There's little rust showing on Cilic's game after his abrupt hiatus in early April. He just smacked a dangerous Delbonis even more easily.

Actually, after a good night's sleep, Ernests' master plan is now obvious to me.

The gentleman he is allowed Cilic to get a bit of match play before RG, and the pragmatist in him decided to conserve energy for RG! Two birds with one stone.

Well rested to deal with Seppi in RG 1R. His seeded path would be Sousa R2, Jo Sore Willie 3R and Goffin R16.

Not too bad of a draw.

So much for gauging Ernesto's performance with Delbonis and Cilic, they're both out. Is it the Geneva curse? Stan barely made it out alive, can our man escape this unruly fate as well???

No curse there, other than the two finalists scheduled two days after the championship match. Bellucci got a tough draw vs French favorite Gasquet. His Geneva conqueror, PCB, advanced, as did Ferrer, Kuznetsov, ARV, Isner, GGL. Good things happen after Geneva...Wawrinka won RG after the inaugural tournament last year.

Sousa next, with a possible JWT/Baghdatis 3R encounter on the line. I know it'll be tough for @vive le beau jeu ! to choose sides on that 3R matchup!

Don't get too excited, fellow Gulbistards. :p Ernie injured his leg in the first set and was clearly hampered in his movement. By the end he was just servebotting. :D Seppi just sucked way too much to expose it. Shocking performance. Unless EG recovers I don't see him getting past Sousa, who's in much better form than Seppi.

Let's dream that on that infamous night in Stockholm, our dear Ernests' journey towards elitism had led down the Swedish urban streets to the Good To Great tennis headquarters for a frank conversation with Magnus Norman instead of to the brothel and the police blotter sheets. How many slams would he now have earned on his earnest journey???

Can only happen in R16 after Frodo takes the trash out in 2R and then chews up a Granollers bar or edges Mahut 71-69 in a fifth set classic.

Haha, to my own grief I'm not part of Ernie's team. So I have no clue. :p We'll have to wait for tomorrow to see in what condition he is.

Let's hope he and his physio stretched it out.

It held up for two sets vs a player who has skills to exploit mobility issues. A massage in Pigalle may be all he needs, non?
