Depending on the crowd, he could have been booed for trying something like that. You might do that when you're up a set and 5-0 but even then it's still insulting to your opponent and to the people watching. And about the shot: He looked like a complete fool. The shot wasn't good at all, too soft and right in Haas' racket. When you're doing something stupid like that, at least try to make it a winner (or UE), what the hell was this supposed to be?

I really have no idea why Monfils hit that amazing trick overhead in Halle. The outcome of the match was still very much in question and a simple smash would have almost surely won the point.

Do you think there is some smart calculation to build momentum at a key point in the match and/or get the crowd on his side?

Or is the problem that he is just not thinking?

Well I enjoyed him a lot over there. He was in full clown-mode but more important, he played great tennis.

Too bad his clownery gets him injured so often, but at least it looks like he's always having fun on court.
