The tallest NBA player retired today.Career cut short by injuries. What a shame that he wasn't able to do for Houston what Nowitzky did for Dallas.

Yao was a very good player. By all accounts he was a good teamate and funny guy.

Injuries did pretty much hijack his career. He played all those extra games every year for the Chinese National Team. When you are the size he is your knees and feet have a set number games that can be played on them. But he was a good offensive player and really helped the NBA expand into the Chinese market

Enjoy your retirement Yao. In basketball it seems like the really tall guys (6'9" and over) have the most problems with their feet and ankles (Ex. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Bill Walton).

Yeah. I wonder if the smaller bones don't develop at the same rate as the rest of the body and can't take the stress.

Huge respect to Yao - came to a foreign land (sure, for the $$$$ - and the NBA and others who sell b-ball gear made a lot more because of him); learned the language; took plenty of punishment (hard fouls) in the early yrs. Great ambassador for the game. Happy trails!

Tough roe to how being an extremely tall ex athlete who used up almost everything he had and still needs to live more than 1/2 time more of his life.
The highs certainly were high, but the lows are down in the dumps.

Yao retired when he limped off the court following Game 3 of the WCSF against the Lakers back in '09, those who were hoping for a comeback and claiming that he wasn't done have simply been in denial for the past two years.
Wish him all the best, he was on of the last, true big mens.
P.s. China will still vote him for the ASG ;)

Pepka,

China now has Chairman Yi to vote in. And Im sure they will.

Bill Simmons calls him Chairman Yi because in the pre draft workouts it was him dunking over chairs.

"It was a good workout, Yi against a chair or a coach," said Ainge. "That's how some of those workouts are beautiful. The chair played good defense a couple times . . ."
