The great rematch is happening in San Pablo park!

I thought that there was just one big one but it may be that there are a ton of them. The reminder to me is the one with the formula in it.

Thanks to the San Pablo crew for letting me join the action today.

Thanks to Helen for being a good sport while I ball-hogged through two sets of doubs. She's a good competitor with rock solid lob.

In the end, I was no match for 3 hours of California sun without having brought salt tablets or extra drinks with me. I was already hurting after the doubs when I started the match against JC - he came out dinking, and I was already feeling beat so I decided to dink him back. Thought my day was done after the first set. Score wasn't close, but the toll on body continued since JC likes to dink back and forth, up and back. Wanted to quit, but JC would have none of that - he could see my body breaking down. Made it through half of the next set without giving up the lead before I felt my ankle stabilizer muscles about to give way - had to do the smart thing and suck up the pride and retire.

Was good watching you move him around, that's what he normally does to everyone else.
I think his dinks work really well in old fart tennis, certainly against me, but I can't run one step. He made finals of every 65's singles tourney he entered last year, so good 4.0, no match for you. Papa, Shroud, and I spent more time watching you play than we did focusing on our own bad doubles.

We've been discussing electrolyte solutions [sic] in some of the health and fitness threads. I'm going to try molasses next week.

Funny ding.....
We played in cool, 62 degree cloudy weather today.
John needed about 1/2 gallon of energy drink, in 4 different bottles.
Shroud said his hat was drenched in sweat.
Papa was actually sitting down on most changeovers, acting dogged, but still hitting and swinging hard.
I didn't sweat one bit, wished I had long pants, and certainly didn't need the Peligrino orange drink I drank. OTOH, I got to hit maybe 3 total groundstrokes in 3 doubles sets.

I normally play only indoors or in the shade - I need to plan ahead better for several hours in the middle of the day.

I might have lasted a little longer with 1/2 gallon of energy drink!

I was playing in sunny and 91 a few days ago. My usual approach for warm days is 2 liters of ice-water, 10 oz of orange juice. Many years ago, I'd bring a three gallon container, put a ton of ice in it and add water. I would sometimes use Gatorade but I prefer just the electrolytes. I've tried Nuun (tasty and they work but expensive) and someone suggested FIZZ. Cramping is absolutely no fun at all.

Also, felt more like 72 degrees to me.

I actually cannot play tennis at all in 75 degree weather, so I know it wasn't in the 70's. The hottest heat spells of the YEAR might hit 80 in Berkeley, no more, at mid day. ONE day last year, when San Francisco hit 102 degrees at 4PM, I played at San Pablo Park and it was just over 75 degrees, with a slight cool breeze coming from the bay. I windsurfed later that day, in 70 degree weather in afternoon.
Berkeley weather is more moderate than ANYwhere else inside the bay, seldom cold, seldom hot, due to the prevailing sea breeze that comes over 60 degree water temperatures. Ocean temps right now are 58, so not much different than the bay, because we haven't had any NW wind action the past 2 weeks, and no upwelling effect to cool ocean temps.
But, you were playing competitive singles, while I was goofing around in bad doubles, and you're a lot bigger than me.

I didn't cramp today. But last summer, I entered a singles tournament for the first time in 10 years. I was doing well using a counterpunching approach with heavy dose of moonballing (and relying on lots of baseline running) on a 85 degree day, and then ankle stabilizer problem hit (when those muscles start to stop firing properly) right when I when on the verge of closing out my semi match against the top seed. A few points later, I completely rolled my ankle badly when I was two points from victory. So I've learned my lesson - didn't want to risk the same injury today.

Ok you are right - according to weather report - high was 68.

Well, you could have given JC a couple games a set so you could rest some.
I kept looking over, and I couldn't believe the amount of running both of you were doing. I know JC can't hit a winner, so he does have to run some, but it looked like you often teased him with a shot just to make him run, as he did to you on occasion.

You might consider an Ankle Brace - I have the Murray model but I haven't needed to use it in years. I've rolled my ankle twice, once on the ice and once coming down from a serve landing carelessly. I haven't had cramps on the tennis court in probably 15 years but I've had them at home when recovering. Simply upping my salt intake will fix the problem but it's nice to avoid it in the first place. I'd also like to diversify to K, Mg and Ca.

We have 82 degrees tomorrow and 92 on Sunday. We'll see if I can get in 12 miles.

I was dressed in sweat pants and a sweat shirt! Growing up in Florida I thought it was a bit cold and certainly wouldnt be wearing shorts and a shirt out there...

Yeah, I kept looking at my bag which had a sweatshirt in it, but the hood would flap around in the wind with my blinding speed, so I just blinded you guys with my red shirt.

I don't think that that's the first one I saw - it's pretty cleaned up from recollection.

I didn't even know that there was a string one. What's string have to do with polarization?
Nothing. it was more about the string combo, retaining directional control and still getting spin. its kevlar and zx stringing the crosses 20-50lbs less

Sounds like perfect weather to me! Would love to hit with you guys the next time I visit SF. Was just in Bellevue/Seattle, but only had a little bit of time for tennis.

Traverajam, if you come to SE Asia to play tennis, I recommend that you not play at noon the first time you play here.
After living on the west coast for years in moderate weather and humidity, the 90 degrees and high humidity was brutal for me. I'm mostly a non-sun kind of person, too. Usually wear long sleaves and/or sunblock and a hat when I'm in the sun.

I can last a little longer now but I also bring about 80 oz of water, a banana, and some snacks. Plus I usually only play starting at 4pm instead of the middle of the day.

For sure, when you visit the San Francisco area, we'd get a crowd together and do some hitting or set play. I'll bring my football, maybe learn something from you. I'm a cloudy weather player also, brought up in the Sunset District SF, where it can go 40 days of fog in a row, never seeing the sun at any time of the day in the summer.
Shroud. In today's weather, Ming would be wearing only shorts, no shirt, and basking in the warmth.

Crazy. I tend to be more awake and focused when its 80+. I get the salt pills Trav was talking about. When I was in Fla last time playing I was in shorts and a t-shirt but had my buddy not had salt pills, I wouldnt have beat him! It really messed me up a bit till I got the salt pills. Next time he said he would bring a "micky" or something...

Yeah, you and John were soaking in sweat. I was cold, but don't know how Papa felt, as he looked comfortable and not at all serious.
Just pains me to know both of you can serve within 2mph of my fastest, yet you guys don't use that first serve hardly at all. I'll try to hit it at least 50% of the time, and it works great against all the afternoon player's also.

I was missing alot of those serves and after I had a couple of doubles I was just trying to get the 1st serve in.

When you see Ian, please pass along my gratitude for providing half of his banana when my body was giving out. And also thanks to JC for mercifully offering up 3 Advils, without which I might not have been able to walk back to the BART station.

That was the toughest 71-old I've ever faced for sure. He sort of baited me into playing his slice-and-dice style for a while - when he gives you the short low stuff, it's safer to poke it down the line than the take a risk. I hardly hit a single real groundstroke the whole time.

That's a long walk. No water. I cramped up last night while sleeping. Had to grab salt water I have ready off the tv stand. While you were playing, I was changing a panel with 17 lines, and showed up there at 4pm, and played til 6pm, hence the cramps. Then had a long nightmare you would not believe.

So this happens to others as well. I had cramping this morning. The difference between cramping and cramps is that cramping is when you feel cramps coming on and you adjust your muscles to prevent it. If you don't take care of it though, you'll eventually get cramps. I have a cup of molasses (1 tbsp) in milk this morning to replenish calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Yeah, old JC is a tough hombre, but mostly against us old farts who can't run. You run like a 4.5, so you can get to most of his winner attempts. He was a low ranked A player back in the '70's.
At San Pablo Park, we sometimes get high ranked A player's, from the '70's, now 74 years old, and they beat JC pretty badly. One was a former World Champ in 50's age group, beating Torbin Ullrich back in the late ''80's or so. Another is a former ABA Pro Basketball player who says he has film of himself guarding Earl the Pearl Monroe. But they, like me, can lose to a USTA JuniorGirl's 14 NorCal top 40, in singles, by about the same scores and competitiveness.

I was missing alot of those serves and after I had a couple of doubles I was just trying to get the 1st serve in.

I"m more pig headed, and when we played together, just couldn't find the service rythum, toss, or swing, so missed all of them too.
I hadn't played in a week, so rusty on serve, plus my serve has been off due to a really bad right tossing shoulder. Finally, I settled on holding way down on the racket, swinging easy but fast, and allowing the loop to happen.

I'm going to be visiting my friends in Santa Clara Thurs-Sun (6/23-6/26). If anyone is interested in joining us, we'll likely be hitting at Mission College in the late afternoon-early evening times. Hit me up at babolap@gmail.com if you want me to e-mail you when we figure out specifics. I love to do drills and practice sets so if that's up your alley feel free to hop in and break a sweat with us!

Have you contacted Matt Lin? His # is 1-626-696-0262. He just moved to Cupertino from LA, doesn't have a car, new to the area, and is a pretty cool guy.
RajS is still on vacation, so he can't provide the ride. He lives in Cupertino also.

It's bad form to post someone's name and phone number on a public board. Maybe you can edit out the number.

Well, Matt is looking for someone to hit with, anytime on weekends, as he just moved up here and knows no one at all.
Matt has been trying to contact Volynets, having trouble, and VitaminL is one of Volynet's acquaintances. Talking about 4.5 level players, none of which should be hitting with 4.0's.

I've been in touch with Matt, and connected him with a 4.5 league captain that I know in the Palo Alto area. They've already exchanged messages and my friend is going to try and further connect Matt with 4.5+ guys down near Cupertino so hopefully he's starting to build his tennis network.

Matt sent me an e-mail. We'll shoot for this weekend if he can get an uber. Mission College is about 20 minutes or so from Cupertino so it just depends if that's close enough for him.

You guys are idiots. I've posted my phone # several times and the only guy who calls is the guy I wanted to contact, President.

Thanks Yaz. Matt texted me he was looking for player's to hit with in the Cupertino area starting this coming weekend.

Salt tablets? Didn't think that athletes were still using them? On top of that, even tho' it's been rather warm/hot in these parts, it has not been all that humid (like Hawaii or Florida). Check out the following articles on sodium and salt tablets.

Pandemonium Part 2 is happening this Saturday July 30.

I have been asked to generate publicity about it.

This is LeeD's chance to take revenge against the YOUNG ONE.

Go LeeD!

Yup, will be back end of the month. I live in Campbell, which is next door to Cupertino.

More like 2 doors down, ain't it? West SJ (& perhaps a chunk of Saratoga) tween you & 'tino?

Not been keeping up. Where is this happening?

Hype is for you kids.
It's a get together, nothing more, nothing less. Matt has to leave after 3 hours anyways.
Arroyo Park, Union City is the meetup courts.
Papa hasn't been playing much, neither has Volynets. I've gotten a bunch of new windsurf equipment, stoked on that, and not on tennis.
