I might need to revive the Notre Dame thread.
We'll see with the Horns, but as of now I expect them to rebound from the BYU game. Plus, I think Brown will stay. Dodds the AD was just on the Longhorn network talking about Mack Brown. Who do you replace him with that could do better? I just don't see a good alternative and he didn't all of a sudden become a bad head coach. UT is up 23-17 at the half after a long field goal by Ole Miss (with Ash out this week and McCoy playing pretty well). UT will be back near the top of the rankings I think, but not this year. They have everything you need, but just need to keep up great recruiting and find the right coaching mix/culture again. Hook em' Horns!
Ole Miss hooking the 'Horns tonight. Texas needs some waking up.
Yes they are and yes they do. I went to school there and let me tell you, if they play great football, the atmosphere there is just electric. The fans love getting behind the Horns but man, they expect the football team to be extremely good every year. That was terrible defense and then we couldn't get it done with McCoy when it mattered. That is a horrible turn in this game for them. Fans are not happy for sure. We just did not get the job done tonight in a big game. If this keeps up, UT will change even the head coach and go after someone extremely qualified. A UT coaching vacancy would be one of the biggest coaching opportunities in all of football.
It is going to be a long year for Cal's defense, but the offense should be fun.
Ho-hum weekend. 76-0 and 72-0 scorelines with very few competitive matches. The anti-NFL.
USC fired Kiffin. I was expecting him to be canned at the end of the year. Another down year for the Trojans.
Was great to go back to the CFB atmosphere yesterday with a full day of tailgaiting and then the Ducks game, even with the miserable weather.
SEC East is in shambles! Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina all lost or about to lose.
Oh and add LSU to the KO'd group. SEC got massacred.
What a wild day in the SEC! What is going on? It was upset city.
The four-team playoffs may come a year too late to avoid a really bitter outcome for the odd team out in the TideDucksNoles race to Pasadena. If all three win out, and this could really easily happen after today's games as evidence, someone is out in the cold!
I finally took a day off and was richly rewarded by the twin bill of the College Station Shootout and the Death Valley Domination. I will nominate Jameis Winston as the Heisman successor to JohnnyFootball. Had he flopped after the pregame swagger he expressed, it would have been just another sad example of false bravado. Instead, he has possibly made Bo Jackson the second best player from Bessemer, AL. This guy is for real and, as a freshman, is the straw stirring the very potent drink Jimbo Fisher is brewing in Tallahassee. As impressively as Winston performed, the defense was incredible in limiting Clemson's usually explosive offense to a single score before garbage time. I have followed my Noles from long before WardBrooksDunn and WeinkeWarrick...this team has the potential to be the best of the bunch and that's after losing 11 guys to the NFL draft. The dynasty is returning!
This is why the SEC is by far the best conference. Everyone is good and no team can play a poor game and still win.
Watched some games yesterday. Looks like they're Turing it into flag football for 2014-2015, most of the calls were a joke. One dude got ejected for pushing (yes pushing, not punching), the Georgia QB in the chest.
I was watching a little bit of 'college' football, and a lot of the plays were hilariously bad.
The SEC does have a lot of depth and Alabama has built a dynasty at the very top. I'm a Longhorn though, so I don't follow the SEC extremely closely. It's a stacked conference, no doubt. Having said that, I do expect some non-SEC teams to win the national title within a few years perhaps.
It's just a NCAA sanctions merry-go-round.
I'm sure we are all going to be shocked when Saban and Alabama are sanctioned (well, I imagine Saban will be smart enough to get out of there before the sanctions hit like Pete Carroll, etc).
College Gameday in Eugene next week!?!? I'm not sleeping at all Friday night!
I'm waiting for SMU to get to #1.
If he goes it will be to somewhere like Texas or just retire. He didn't do too well in the NFL. I doubt anybody would want him there.
And what is this love fest that SEC fans have with their own conference? Is it because their own teams don't win the NC so they root for the whole conference thereby making them winners?
Does your individual team have football championships? Lucy??
More amazing stuff from the famous Jameis...almost 300 yards in barely more than a half with 3 TDs and a 35-point first quarter output. FSU scores 40+ for the seventh game in a row. The Heisman engravers can start etching Winston's name tomorrow, even though the Noles will drop in the rankings with Bama continuing to roll and Oregon's victory over ranked UCLA. We need to hurt Miami badly next week to rebump to #2.
It is good to see stringertom back on the forum. Oregon versus FSU would be an entertaining game.
Thanks, MB! I may rejoin the other threads if I find more time off due to my creaky old body suspending my work flow as it's doing right now.
As to a Noles-Ducks matchup, yes it would be a thriller but Bama must stumble and both of them win out. The first case is less likely (LSU, Miss. St., Chattanooga, Auburn and the SEC East champs are all that's left). FSU has their two "blood" games remaining (Miami and @Florida) and a possible rematch in the ACC title game with the Hurricanes. Very winnable, IMO. The Ducks also have some work (Stanford and the Civil War vs a very good OSU offense) and a PAC-12 title game (UCLA?). Tougher, but very possible too.
It sucks the 4-team playoff doesn't start this year. Someone will be left out in the cold and I'm hoping it isn't my Noles.
Any Bama/Ducks/Noles sounds good to me. Biased in that I'd prefer the Ducks in there though.
Bama/Ducks would be a great contrast in styles.
Notre Dame fan here, but I will root for Georgia Tech, Navy, and Army, because I love the old-school option offenses they run.
FSU sets another record...largest spread favorite (3 TDs) entering a game vs another unbeaten ranked team. They WILL cover!
Nebraska beats Northwestern with a 50-yard Hail Mary at the gun! QB Kellogg ate his Wheaties, joining the FlutieStewart game-winning club.
Jameis won't need that tonight...Go Noles!
After watching another sleep-inducing Cal debacle, I look forward to watching Jameis play Miami.
That freshman QB is awesome but theres no way in hell he will ever eclipse Bo Jackson as the best player from Bessemer.
I sure hope either Oregon or FSU beat the hell out of Saban if they play in natl title.
Struggling a bit in the first half tonight with the two picks...first one a bit forgiveable as it was like a punt with no return but the second one took all the momentum they had developed and shifted it Miami's way. Let's see how he bounces back in the second half.
As to Bo comparisons, he is still a freshman with lots of time to eclipse the Bessemer Heisman. A national title will stand up nicely on his resume. He also has some great diamond skills, although I think Jimbo may squash the two-sport participation if we get in the title mix.
Bo was and still is a legend. A guy like Bo comes around every 50 or so years. He was the number 1 overall pick in football and may very well have been the number 1 overall pick in baseball if he had been allowed to finish his baseball career at Auburn. Guys like Ronald Curry and Drew Henson were supposed to be like Bo but came up woefully short so I seriously doubt Winston or anyone else from AL will ever eclipse Bo.
Jameis settled down in the second half, read what Miami was giving him and let the horses surrounding him do their jobs...21 of 29, 325 yards, 1 TD and the two picks. It won't strengthen his Heisman position but it's amazing stuff for the first eight games of his career.
We'll get to see what the more seasoned Mariota has to offer on Thursday night at Palo Alto. Manziel is ripping it up tonight vs mismatched UTEP but he already has the two losses to Bama and Auburn. Winston's intangibles may be the key in swinging votes his way...no scandal worries on the horizon for the Famous Five. What a refreshing attitude he possesses!
It certainly looks like a 2 man race and Mariotta may have a chance to secure it with his upcoming game on Thursday. If Mariotta keeps doing what hes doing without throwing even 1 INT all season, its gonna be close to impossible to not with the Heisman. Jameis is having a super freak season and is clearly in the top 2 right now IMO.
Great article on Yahoo! Sports front page today about Cucumber Cool Jameis. You may have seen the scrum that led up to the Noles' first TD of the third quarter but Winston actually got Jimbo away from OL Bobby Hart and extinguished the flames so Hart could get back out there with his head screwed on right.
Also, ABC showed clips of Winston on the mound this past spring for the Noles, locking up a couple of batters with nice breaking balls and a 95 MPH heater. I wish they had added the clip of him gunning down a runner with a laser strike to third base from his spot in right field. I have seen that replay several times and the look on the runner's face says it all!
Another OT win in Beaver Stadium. Love it.
It was against Illinois, which is worrying but I'll take it! Otherwise pretty boring weekend of college football.
Next week looks incredible. Ducks/Stanford, Bama/LSU, Baylor/'Homa.
Deja vu all over again for the Ducks as Stanford plays keepaway (45 minutes ball possession), builds a 26-0 lead and then weathers the comeback fueled by a blocked FG return to win 26-20.
Mariota now out of the Heisman watch, the top 2 are clearly Bama/FSU with Ohio State and Baylor the outsiders looking in for a hopeful upset.
Baylor's 40-12 win over the Sooners was not as one-sided as the score...it was 5-3 OU at one point and the Sooners had lots of chances but were inept on offense. Baylor has a chance to be jumped by a one-loss Stanford and even, if it should happen, a one-loss Bama. Ohio State? They become huge fans of Florida, LSU, Auburn and Mizzou...potential victors over FSU and/or Bama.
Close call for Jameis & Co., ekeing out a hard-fought 38-21 win today! That's right...FSU's defense/special teams were pressing the offense for bragging rights on the scoreboard.
Noles on a mission! There won't be missteps on the way to Pasadena.
^^^ Took me a while to get that post, Tom. ^^^
Sorry...random gloating about our Noles' overall strength...since yielding 34 points to Boston College, the defense has been very overlooked in the highly successful run. We lost a defensive coordinator to a HC position in the SEC but stole a Bama DB coach to run our scheme and Pruett has gelled the talent left from a crew that sent many studs to the NFL into an even better unit. Today is a perfect example...besides the 21 points scored by the D/ST, w forced seven turnovers, which gave Winston very short fields to produce his group's 38 points. The irony is Winston's Heisman hype might get shafted by his "measly" 159 yards passing today.
Meanwhile, the other bigs (Florida and Miami) in the state both lost but UCF keeps rolling with a close win vs Houston. The Knights will be the second highest ranked team from my state and should play a BCS bowl game. In Gainesville, it's taken less than a season for the HC to morph into "Muschump" and the Gators likely won't qualify for a bowl game.
I caught the last few minutes of Alabama LSU. What a spectacle!
I'll be rooting for your 'Noles for the remainder of the season.
Also hoping we get Oregon/Baylor in a bowl game.
Thanks! Right now, I'm rooting for Jameis to be able to clear his name in a sexual battery incident that occured last December. I can't figure out why he a subject of interest when the victim claims the assailant was roughly 5'11" and 240 pounds...not even close to Winston's body type. Nevertheless, the Tallahassee Democrat reports he is being evaluated by the police and he has hired an attorney to address the issue. While dormant for several months, the investigation is now ongoing. Stay tuned for more mudslinging.
Miracle on The Plains! After dominating Georgia for more than three quarters, Auburn found themselves down by one and faced a fourth down and long. No problem...just throw into double coverage and watch two Dawgs DBs fight for the INT and deflect it to the underthrown receiver.
Has to be the Play of the Year! Now, a week of rest to ready themselves for The Iron Bowl and a possible berth in the SEC championship game. They will need to avoid an incomplete effort like today to beat Bama.
Brutal loss for my Dawgs. It's going to take me weeks to get over that play. How those 2 don't knock the ball down is hard to believe. Ruined what would have been one if the greatest comebacks in school history.
Besides watching my Iowa Hawkeyes lose every week, the end of the Georgia/Auburn game is about the only 5 minutes I've seen all year in college football. Just randomly turned on the TV while cooking dinner.
Would have been even wilder if Georgia could have scored a touchdown to win.
Hope the bacon soufflé turned out well!
I was fully expecting Murray to pull off the second comeback too!
Meanwhile, USC has chopped The Tree from its #4 perch and the BCS picture. Bama looked only average vs Miss. State. FSU likes 59-3 on the scoreboard. How crazy November can be on the NCAA gridiron.
One more home game for Oregon hopefully!
Coach Dantonio thinks the Big 10 champ, Ohio St/Michigan St winner, should be in the BCS title game. Who exactly have Ohio St. and Mich St. played? Mich St.'s toughest game was against then #22 Notre Dame and they lost. Ohio St. beat up on cupcakes and barely beat Michigan. The Big 10 has been SAD the past few years.
My ranking the power conferences:
At or around the likes of WAC/American/Mountain West: Big-10 (the conference that's been too lazy to change it's name the past 20 years).
SEC are football GODS, so when you start thinking about national title games, it makes no sense to have any other conference represented in the title game.
So we know we will always have two SEC teams, but which two. Obviously, one has to be Alabama. In fact, the NCAA should simply adopt the old Wimbledon rules and just put Alabama in the title game by virtue of them being awesome.
The only question then is, who plays Alabama? I think there should be a rotating schedule. LSU for a few years, give Auburn a shot every once in a while, heck, maybe even give Georgia a shot every tenth year or so. If a big name like "johnny football" comes along, give that team a few shots.
Really, given the pure awesomeness of the SEC and the patheticness of all other conferences, this is the only fair way IMO.
I've watched college football for a lot of years (like 5 years now), and I can't ever remember any other conference being any good at all. In fact, I don't even know why any other conference exists apart from the SEC. Probably just politics.
Separate names with a comma.
