I could just post this one and end the thread, but I wanted to see what everyone else here thinks is the second best.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepyGm9Me6w

So find what you think is the closest on Youtube, and post the link for everyone to see.

I would include the actual Miami Vice theme in my top five, maybe even my top three, but the one you posted is something I never heard before(Crockett's Theme:confused: ).

As to Oz, I never even heard of the show, much less listened to the theme music. Based on the video clip I assume it was some prison type show.

Aside from a great opening, I think the best TV themes should have enough appeal to actually be played on the radio like Hawaii 5-0's was, or shows like St Elsewhere, Miami Vice, etc.

it's obviously not from the opening but it was used during the show. it was also a hit on the 80s charts if I'm not wrong and i chose that over the opening because its catchier(IMO) than the opening theme

edit:i remembered they used Crockett's theme in GTA Vice City

also, I'm surprised you never heard of Oz, it was a HBO hit

Believe it or not (pun intended), I still remember the music and some of the words to the Greatest American Hero from my childhood, something like 30 years ago.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Q3orQhEcA

I looked up the video for you but I refuse to watch it, something tells me my adult cheese detector could burst.

EDIT: OK, I'll fess up, I couldn't resist and just watched it after posting this. Oh boy, had I the hugest kid crush on Connie Selleca. And the guy trying clumsily to fly always cracked me up.

Wow, another show I never even heard of.

I will say it did have a catchy theme though.

Agree on the actual theme, but you gotta admit, blowing up the (faux) Ferrari was really, really cool. 8)

Here's one for a short - and tragic - series called Cover Up:

Taxi, Welcome Back Kotter, Newhart, All In The Family, The Jeffersons and Mary Tyler Moore were some of my favorites growing up. They don't make them like that anymore!!

I think the top 3 theme songs would probably have to be

    Dukes of Hazard
    The Love Boat
    Happy Days ()
Edit: Had to add this one, so I guess top 4? lol

There are many that are popular but I think these three everybody knows whether they have ever heard of the show or not.

I never thought so until I heard the full, 3 minute version. Made me really respect it, and you gotta love the great Tommy Morgan's harmonica.

There's at least two versions of the MTM theme. But then, different versions of theme songs is nothing unique.

There are many great theme songs, from Maude (especially the 'Family guy' version) to Patty Duke to any number of other songs. Plenty of good ones. Funny thing is, most of the ones mentioned in this thread suck. The OP set the tone for crappy theme songs with his pick of Hawaii Five-O...

Hawaii Five-0 (partially because I know the LADY who played bass on the song)

    Barney Miller

    Love Boat

Welcom Back Kotter (I love the part where the dude rides a unicycle carrying a tennis racket at the very end)

Super Friends (cartoon, but still cool)

Sigmund and the Sea Monsters (a bit trippy)

    The Jeffersons
